How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning
and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)
Product 1
For my first product I will be creating an entertainment magazine. It will be
a generic music magazine which will have a different focal genre of music
for each issue which will aid in reaching my goal of a attracting a mass
market audience opposed to a niche group. The debut issue will tackle pop
music which I will convey through the cover lines and contents, as well as
the model on the front being blonde and wearing a signature red lipstick
that will represent Taylor Swift as the feature artist on the front issue’s
cover. The second issue will talk about rock music and this will be shown
through stereotypical features of a rocker on the front cover, such as a
band t shirt and a tattoo sleeve as well as the contents being about
different artists that are well known and current in the rock, alternative and
metal genre.

I will tackle two social groups in my first issue by having a ten female on my
front cover, and an older woman on the contents page therefore showing a
contrast in age. The second issue will have a male on the front, and a photo
of a crowd at a concert on the contents page which will have a mix of
different ages, genders and ethnicities in it.
To build brand identity I will have black and white photos on the cover of
each magazine and pick out accent colours from the images and I will then
match the masthead and some cover lines to this colour. I will do this on
every issue so each one will have its own colour scheme but keep the
layout the same to ensure it is a recognise ale brand. Although this will
challenge typical codes and conventions of some genres such as pop, I
believe it is a good idea as it is something different that I have not seen
before yet is strongly influenced by Billboard as they have a different
coloured masthead on each issue. I will call my magazine Replay as it is a
modern term for the action of listening to a song or album again which will
signify someone’s love of music which is something that the readers of the
magazine will have in common. I also like that it is a one-word title similar
to Q or Mojo which are also music magazines.
I will have expected codes and conventions of a magazine such as a
barcode, date line, cover price and headline. This media language and page
furniture will identify Replay as a mainstream magazine which will again
help to appeal to a larger audience.
Product 2
For my website, I will take inspiration from Billboard and Kerrang as they fit
in with the genre of each of my magazine issues. Billboard has a very basic
page as there is other stuff on their website too. They pick out headlines
that will appeal to the audience and have a feature for upcoming shows
and an option to subscribe to the magazine. Kerrang also has a features
page which allows you to see some exclusive online articles. This is
something that I will do on my site to keep a constant presence during the
monthly issues of Replay being released.
I will keep the website simple as I not only want it to be appealing and not
overwhelming, but also accessible as I am visually impaired myself this is a
big element of my work.

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of
the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)
To link my two media products, I will mention a competition on the first
edition of the magazine that you can only enter through the website. This
will appeal to the audience as the winner will receive two tickets to Leeds
festival which is popular with my target audience.
I will have an article on my website showing the inspiration behind the first
issue of the magazine, I will also have one before the first issue is released
which will let readers learn about the person doing the interviews for
Replay. There will also be a short video talking to the interviewer about
what meeting Taylor Swift was really like as she is a controversial star in the
industry, and I feel the audience will find great entertainment in an
individual's opinion. For my interactive element on my website, I will have
a comments section on the video to get feedback from people and their
opinions. All these features will build a personal connection between the
magazine and its readers which I feel is important to help maintain this
form of media in an ever-evolving digital world.
