why?
What is a media institution?
A media conglomerate, media group, or media
institution is a company that owns numerous
companies in various mass media; i.e. television,
radio, publishing, motion picture, and the internet
What is a media institution?
When we use the term institutions in Media Studies,
we usually mean the people who have a role in the
production of media texts.
This evidently covers a vast amount of ground
A brief list may include: Companies/organisations,
producers, distributors and marketing.

a portfolio of more than 600
magazines, over 400 digital products
and 50 radio and TV stations around
the world.

On the official Bauer media website they have a page for
“4Music”
The page says “Our audience is 16-24 year olds who love TV
and cinema. They have a keen interest in fashion, clothes and
celebrity culture. Often found clubbing, dancing and holidaying
with friends, they also regularly attend gigs.”

They reach…
31.7million viewers
11 million viewers a month
54% of all TV viewers over the year
(based on 2014 figures)
This means that if Bauer media distributed my magazine, many viewers of 4Music
would see my magazine being distributed by Bauer media and be encouraged to buy
and read my magazine, because they like viewing other Bauer media associated
products, such as MOJO magazine and 4Music.
Why I think Bauer media would be a good
distribution company for my media product
Bauer media distribute MOJO magazine, Q magazine and KERRANG!
Magazine. All three of these magazines are mostly rock/indie but do
feature popular artists such as Jay-Z and Beyoncé, who featured in
additions of Q magazine.
The genres of music these magazines are associated with are genres of
music that are more commonly preferred by youths, than “old people”. This
means that for people from the age group of 16-24 (my target audience)
Bauer media have a reputation for distributing magazines targeted towards
them.
Therefore, by distributing my magazine, readers of magazines like MOJO
or Q magazine would trust Bauer media to distribute a magazine that they
would like.
Why I think Bauer media would be a good
distribution company for my media product
I have found some copies of
Bauer distributed magazines
that feature jazz associated
artists such as this addition of
Q magazine…
Features Paolo Nutini
(blues and soul music
artist)
Features Stevie
Wonder (soul
music, rhythm
and blues, funk
and jazz artist)
Problems with Bauer media
Bauer media do not distribute any Jazz dedicated
magazines and so would be hesitant to perhaps distribute
my magazine because they are not experts in the field of
jazz music.
Bauer media distribute magazines that have featured
popular artists like Cheryl Cole, Rhianna and Madonna. I
do not want popular artists like this to feature in my
magazine because they are not seen as jazz musicians
and their popularity would remove the niche aspect that I
want for my magazine
