What Is Your “Y?”
When solving for “Y” in a mathematical equation, you
are seeking to determine the vertical axis in coordinate
geometry. In that case, it would be important to know
what your “Y” is to know where you are on a map.
When we were in Selmer, Tennessee, there was a local
“Y” and it was known as the median where the road
would “Y.” It was the hang out spot for all the local
kids. I do not know “why.”
The letter Y is a symbol that has its own meaning. It is
not just a helpful tool to give us words like Yield, Youth,
and Year. The letter Y has origins in both Roman and
Hebrew history. The letter Y is linked to Hebrew by the
letter Yod and it means “fire.” When we ask the
question, “What is your Y?” The question is —- where
is your inner fire? Your zeal? What is your Why? On
a day like Purpose Sunday, one could translate this as,
“What is your purpose?”
Before you could be asked to purpose in your giving, it
is vital to know your why.
The words “what, where, when, and why” all lead to
our decisions on any given day. Each seems to be equal
in weight. “What” will I eat for lunch today? “Where”
will I go to lunch? “When” will the preacher be done so
I can eat?
Why, however, seems to have a greater influence on the
rest.
Where will I go to eat for lunch today? Why? Because
I am hungry and if I do not eat, my stomach will tell
everyone of my decision.
“Why” has more impact because it challenges the
decision behind every “what,” “where,” and “when.”
If our “why” is right, then every “what,” “where,” and
“when” will be right. If our “why” is wrong, then our
actions will be just as wrong and even lead to worse
consequences down the road. We will be in the wrong
place on that coordinate, and the fire will go out.
Our “why” is our purpose, and the others are our results.
Solomon, the wisest man to live before Christ, explains
what our “why” must be. When we follow this, we will
solve for Y and the fire will burn bright.
“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and
keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of
man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with
every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes
12:13,14).
