Those Daily Duties
A number of years ago when I was preach-
ing in Calera, Alabama one of the ladies was talking about
trying to get her daughter to clean her room. Her daughter
replied to her motherâs request saying, âBut why do I need
to clean my room? It will just get dirty again and Iâll have
to clean it again tomorrow.â Thatâs what makes such work
so hard. Itâs not that difficult to clean a room but itâs the
thought that itâs something that has to be done again and
again. I read once of a maid who was asked about her new
job and she said, âItâs alright except that itâs so daily.â
Thatâs life. Itâs the constant day in and day out grind that
wears on us, discourages us and cause us to quit. Thomas
Edison said one time, âOur greatest weakness lies in giving
up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just
one more time.â As Christians we need to understand that
itâs to that daily grind that we are called to serve. In Acts
chapter two we read of the beginning of the church. When
the gospel was preached for the first time three thousand
people responded in obedience and in verse 46 we are told
that these new Christians âSo continuing daily with one
accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to
house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of
heartâ (Acts 2:46). These early Christians were active in
their lives of service. Each day found them in the temple, a
united people, who praised God, and who taught others
about Christ. We know this is true because there were daily
additions to the church (Acts 2:47). In Acts 5:42 we read,
âAnd daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not
cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.â The
apostles had been beaten and commanded not to preach any
more in the name of Jesus yet they continued to preach
every day in the temple and in every house. It was this latter
teaching that was the key to their growth. One cannot be
successful in evangelizing a community unless they are ac-
tively teaching the people in their homes. Later in the book
of Acts we read of Paulâs work in Berea. Luke wrote of
those people, âThese were more fair-minded than those in
Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readi-
ness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether
these things were soâ (Acts 17:11). What an example those
of Berea are to us. They searched the scriptures âdaily.â
Thatâs how people become learned; thatâs how people are
able to avoid being deceived by false teachers and to keep
themselves from being led astray. The Christian life is one
of daily devotion to Christ. We need to be careful that we
do not let ourselves become weary of the âdaily grind.â Re-
member Paulâs admonition to the churches of Galatia and
the church in Thessalonica. âAnd let us not grow weary
while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do
not lose heartâ (Gal. 6:9). âBut as for you, brethren, do not
grow weary in doing good
