The nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan, Healthy People 2020, recognizes that
mental health promotion and mental health reduction as one of the most significant health
objectives. Statistic indicated that mental health disorders are the leading cause of disability in
United States and Canada, while suicide is the 11th leading cause of death that killed approximately
30,000 American each year ("Mental Health and Mental Disorders", n.d.). The United States
Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has commended series of guideline once patients are
identified with mental health disorder.
According to the flow chart, the treatment plan for major depressive disorder include provide
pharmacological consult, address psychosocial problems, and afford psychotherapy interventions.
Psychotherapy is one of the major components in mental health treatment. It is noted as talk therapy
that consists of counseling, interpersonal persuasion, psychosocial education, and personal coaching
(Prochaska & Norcross, 2010). Psychotherapy also carries the objectives of helping people to make

The Psychodynamic Approach
The psychodynamic approach can be traced to Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century and the early
part of the 20th century. He first concentrated on a cathartic method to release repressed emotions
associated with past experiences and then began to focus on a free association method and the
development of transference (Messer, 2001). Underlying the psychoanalytic perspective is the idea
of the unconscious. The unconscious is where past experiences and true emotions are hidden.
Manifestation of an undesirable trait, such as anger, along with excessive use of defense
mechanisms lead to the assumption of a deeper conflict hidden within the unconscious.
Psychodynamic techniques try to gain access to the unconscious and make the patient aware of the

Dr. Beck 's Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Over the centuries many forms of psychotherapy have emerged to facilitate change and improve
people's quality of life. Every therapy aims to assist people who are experiencing mental health
problems and some have proven more effective than others over time. In the 20th century the most
prevalent form of psychotherapy was psychoanalysis. However, by the 1970's many other forms of
short–term psychotherapy began to dominate. Today there are estimated to be over 400 different
types of psychotherapies (Rector, 2010). When these psychotherapies are compared, only a few
stand out which have really proven effective. One of the most effective short–term therapies in our
time has been Cognitive Therapy. Psychiatrist Dr. Aaron T. Beck pioneered Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy (CBT) back in the 1960's amongst other ground breaking therapists such as Albert Ellis. Dr.
Beck originally studied and practiced psychoanalysis and later discovered that CBT had more
impact in treating some of the more common mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. This
short–term psychotherapy focuses on current problems in the here and now aiming to change
unhelpful or negative thinking and behaviours (Westbrook, Kennerley, & Kirk, 2011). One of the
key components of short–term or time–limited therapy is to work collaboratively with clients in
structured psychotherapy sessions to form a case conceptulaisation. This provides an outline of the

experience. The research problem is to analyse the differences between these two art therapy
approaches administered over female Juvenile offenders, with self–esteem, peer–relations,

Personal Theory
Alfred Adler was born in 1870 in Austria and developed his own theory on Individual Psychology in
1912. Adler's theory is closely related to Humanistic Psychology. Influenced by Freud, Smuts and
Vaihinger, Adler based his theory on the client's ability to live as a fully functioning adult in society.
Adler's holistic theory views each person as unified. Adler discussed birth order personality traits.
Adler's theory also discussed the roles therapists should take and the techniques that should be used
in Individual Psychology therapy sessions.
A major difference in Adlerian psychology compared to Freudian is the client is viewed as lacking
courage, instead of being mentally ill in Freud's theory. Adler's belief, that a person's consciousness
is the center of their personality differed from Freud's belief. (Wood, 2004). Adler agreed with Freud
that gratification is a central need but Adler goes on to also imply that clients have needs for power,
security, self–esteem, achievement and social welfare. Day (2008) emphasizes that people can
decide how to state their needs, but may not be able to be in charge of their needs.

Pharmacotherapy typically is not the first course of action when treating post–traumatic stress
disorder. Doctors hesitantly prescribe medications because of the risk of side effects or unfavorable
outcomes. PTSD drug treatment side effects include intolerable sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal
issues, glaucoma, sedation, dizziness, and depression. Taking any medication runs the risk of side
effects but psychotherapy eliminates that risk. Side effects can easily change the outcome of the
course of treatment by making the quality of life worse than before treatment. Some therapists such
as Dr. Robert Moore claim that medications do not treat the root of the problem. Pharmacotherapy

The Adlerian Theory focuses on how the person's perception of the past and his or her interpretation
of early events have a continuing influence. Alder believed "that biological and physiological factors
provided probabilities for future growth but that, "the self", with creative power as part of its inner

focuses on uncovering the root of emotional suffering. Followers of this therapeutic approach argue
against individuals having free will. Our early life experiences and biological drives determine the
motivations of the unconscious, which control our actions, thoughts, and behaviors. During our first
few years of life, emotions are the predominant form of communication. Having a secure attachment
to his or her caretaker is essential to an infant's survival. If a young child's expression of emotion
provokes a negative reaction from the caretaker, then survival is perceived to be in peril. In order to
protect the attachment, young children create defenses to hide those emotions. Because they were
formed in the early years, these defenses evolve into habitual adaptive mechanisms that come out
when certain feelings are triggered in order to preserve the present relationship. Certain emotions,
negative attachment issues, and other early life experiences might cause the adaptive mechanisms to
become maladaptive. Even though these defenses may have solved a past problem, they may create
greater problems in present relationships. Examining a client's belief's, emotions, early life
experiences, and thoughts can give insight into recurring patterns (i.e., transference). Awareness of

humor styles, playfulness, and creativity. The effect of these traits on treatment is called "therapist

This workshop focuses on how somatic experience is reflected in spoken therapy. The workshop
offers the perspective of a DMT and her endeavors to integrate this approach in her training in
verbal psychotherapy. By using somatic experiences we will explore ways in which body awareness
informs clinical practice. Followed by examples that illustrate the movement beyond the polarity of
verbal and nonverbal. Participants will have a chance to see how bodily practice are used in verbal
therapy. Finally, using both somatic and cognitive reflection, we will attempt to embrace the tension
between dichotomizing and integrating the verbal and the nonverbal.
This workshop will provide a dance/movement therapy perspective to analyze spoken therapy. It
will be focused on possible areas of integration and overlap that could make the bodily interventions
