- The closest thing to my product is battlefield 1, a game featuring the British empire and fighting against
Tierney and evil. This and my game have similarities but if I did create my own game I wouldn’t have it
represented by battlefield 1.
The main similarities is that the British empire is still alive and fighting against the Germans. Apart from that
nothing else is the same of similar of course the Americans are still our allies in both wars in my game but
instead of the Americans rising to power and become the only super power to be feared the British empire
rises with them and is granted their old empire in return of good faith between the allies. But after a while
the former allies became more hostile with each other as Americans discriminated British with in their
country which sparked the war and the game.
- Battlefield 1 captures the real sight of the war and how people were treated and how they where dealt
with on the front lines. My game would have a similar appeal as hundreds of thousands of men and women
dying for peace but with modern weapons and modern harsh and brutal tactics to win the war quicker.
Nuclear weapons would definitely have a role to play in this game. The people who plays battlefield loves
the brutality and realism of the real war influenced into the game, also a monumental moment in human
history put into a game most people like playing game about history
3. Existing Product 2
Another existing product similar to my idea is the TV show,
“The man in the High castle” this is a fictional story of a huge historical event that changed the entire
outcome of the war and turned countries like America into a play ground for the German Reich and the
Japanese empire. This is also another product that is similar to mine as they are all pre-war powers and
instead of the allies winning the axis won and divided and conquered the entire world from Africa to
America.
This is pretty much the same but opposite. It’s a weird and twisted version of my game as it would be the
British empire not the Japanese empire and the United States of America instead of the German Reich. But
alike in the TV show they start distrusting each other as they both evolve and advance their technologic
advancements with German scientists, but with my alternate universe is that the British empire is still here
and fully operational and on the verge of collapse if the republican ideals of America intervene in the
empires ways and methods and cultures.
4. Existing Product 3
The next closest and most recent film series that includes and involves the British empire and the same amount of
patriotism as there would be in my product. Pirates of the Caribbean, this film series is heavily involved in the British
empire. And mainly views them as the protagonist and the villain as the main storyline is based on a pirate captain called
jack sparrow and a side romance story about Elizabeth Swann and Will turner. Who later on I the series are viewed and act
as pirates against an English commander of the west indies in control of the British imperial navy. His views of a
commander is to rid the world of flea infested pirates who are a nuisance to the British empire.
Through each movie the British empire are involved as the year that their based in is 1720-1750 as the creators didn’t want
it to be historically accurate so its more fantasy and fictional as its story is based on myths and legend’s such as the fountain
of youth and David jones locker. But apart from fictional monsters lurking under the oceans the biggest threat for the
pirates is being captured by the British imperial navy as in the second movie their is a scene of an island full of prisoners and
being torchered by leaving them out in a cage where crows could eat their flesh. This would be a death sentence for pirates
issued by the empire.
5. Existing Product 4
I’ve chosen WW1 propaganda as it is related to the British empire as it was still intact and functional. Plus its
pre 1990s so its perfect. Using posters for recruiting young men into the royal army, navy, RAF and special
forces, such as spies. During WW1 there was numerous colonies in the empires army such as Indian soldiers
who gained a huge reputation In the frontlines for their ferocity in battle and endless moral. Australian
soldiers fought valiantly and efficiently on the western front with their kings soldiers. Canadian soldiers with
most experience in the wild wilderness and cold forests with survival skills and endless supply lines for the
heart of the empire. New Zealand’s fearless nature aided the allies with professional and well trained troops
throughout the war deploying over 100,000 troops to a barren western front with relief from the British.
And the British soldiers during ww1 were honorable in the face of death, and endless amounts of courage
and willingness to fight and die for their country and for the great or good of the world. Over 700,000 men
died so we didn’t suffer under the enemies hands.
Most of the men who died did it as a romantic gesture for a girl back home but most never made it back to
display their love.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
They are all in the past, in the books of history not on the news reports. Most people will connect them all
for their involvement in the British empire but that’s my idea, so of course all them are related to each other
but the a few of my suggestions are diverse compared to other like “the man in the high castle” this has
nothing to do with the British empire, but could be interpreted as a different path where instead of the
Japanese empire I would be the British empire. This is one scenario out of thousands that could of happened
but this would be interesting seeing the British empire still alive and thriving in modern day and no longer is
it 2nd best to America, I reckon it would be vastly superior and advance compared to America as the empires
recourses are together instead of divided.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
I will take away that not a lot of products or things are about the British empire in a modern society. As most
are based on other Historical events and times during history. Some people may be offended now of the
idea of an empire or dictation of monarchs, as that is what caused the French revolution. But the royal
family wasn’t horrible towards their fellow countrymen or disrespectful. They treated them as equals not as
their lesser.
8. Audience research
• Observation: Most of my audience members are British and relate to
British culture in my survey in various questions. This was made obvious
when most of the questions are related to peoples country and their
patriotism, I have had someone who seems like a mixed gender from
turkey as they voted for the ottoman empire instead of one of the many
others.
• What this says about my audience: Most of the reviewers said that they
are either mixed gender and there are more females than males so
there is a diverse audience. some people have chosen multiple options
so they could have two answers to one question.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My game project is a
first person shooter and 75% of the responders voted for fps as their
favourite genre of gaming.
9. Audience research
• Observation: The age range is 13- 16 is most popular and
second is 17-21, so my audience would be younger rather
than older.
• What this says about my audience: That my audience is
younger than I thought. And would play this quite a lot as
they are young and have few responsibilities compared to
adults.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: my game
project is meant to appeal to patriots of their country, mainly
the U.K but former colonies would also be popular hot spots
for sales. Like Canada and India. Majority of the audience will
just love the graphics and the unique scenario that the game
is set in.
10. Audience research
• Observation: People also like the time in history for the
game to be set in during the early 1900s where two of the
most bloodiest conflicts happened, WW1 and WW2. these
places and times have been visited by hundreds of other
game producers, such as the famous call of duty going to
WW2 and battlefield going to the first world war.
• What this says about my audience: This tells me that people
aren’t interested in the future as that has been
overexadurated. But people are starting to prefer old historic
wars that actually happened or is possible.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: it will appeal
as I will have have multiple missions in the past during the
end of WW2 and how that is significant for the overall story
of the game.
11. Audience research
• Observation: Quite a few of the reviewers say that their
console is a PS4 and hardly any say PC or Xbox so PS4
to a lot of people is better then the others.
• What this says about my audience: The best format
would be to target my product on the ps4 console as
that is the most popular is is my go to game console.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I would
make special deals on the PS store so I would
guarantee an audience that like extras. Even adding
stuff like stickers for the controller of the British empire
flag.
12. Audience research
• Observation: One of the questions was which genre of
gaming do you prefer and the majority chose first person
shooter. The second most popular was open world. Genres
like horror and simulation was popular with no votes.
• What this says about my audience: My audience likes first
person shooters and that’s an important part of the game,
so FPS players are guaranteed to enjoy my game.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I will try to
include other genres into my game but for now its FPS
heavy.
13. Audience research
• Observation: The campaign is 50/50 disputed a lot of people give
their reason because it wont be good. And companies either focus
on the campaign or the multiplayer, but most that do both end up
with terrible gameplay for their community.
• What this says about my audience: That my audience knows that a
lot of recent games with campaigns and multiplayers suffer. its true
a lot of the new games have horrible campaigns and the rest of the
game suffers because of it.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: it will appeal to the
audience because the campaign will be better then any other game
on the market, and the multiplayer will be just as good for the
people who are fans of the game genre.
14. Audience research
• Observation: In one of the questions I asked if they had a choice
what branch of the military would they join, and this was a good
question to ask as I plan for my game to be selective so if you
choose air force you will be a pilot, or if you chose the navy you
would be an operator of one of the turrets of a warship.
• What this says about my audience: They will be given a diverse
choice of how to play the game on the campaign and multiplayer as
all maps and missions will have these various choices to give the
audience the full experience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: By giving the gamer
full control of how they execute an order. In the campaign and
multiplayer this way everyone gets this experience.
16. Interview 1
What would you think of a game based on the British empire in
the modern day?
I think this idea is unique and different from most of the other
games that are already out there. It would be cool being a British
soldier in a different world that could of been our reality.
Which do you prefer, 1st person or 3rd person views or both?
I prefer 1st person as you cant cheat by looking round the
corners, and its just better.
What type of weapons do you use in first person shooters?
Rifle’s, LMGs, shotguns or Silenced pistols.
I like using rifles as I'm a pretty good shot and prefer a challenge.
17. Interview 1
• Observation:
This person likes the idea of my game project and says that they
would play it if it’s a FPS. This would help me know that most of the
players would like it for the Gameplay and how the weapons played.
• What this says about my audience:
That most of my audience will the campaign, but most will play the
multiplayer and try to unlock the best weapons. That the community
crave a new and exiting game that is out of this world.
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
I would focus on the FPS aspect of the game and give the audience
what they wanted. By listening to the community and improving the
game. The game will only be 1st person with extreme realism and
brilliant effects.
18. Interview 2
Would you like a zombies mode with fully customizable maps and just
fun?
Yes I think this would be amazing, similar to call of duty zombies but
more fun and customizable and more weapons.
Would you also like seasonal packs but for free?
Yes as long as their isn’t any micro transactions or anything to make
the game unfair.
Should we focus on one character or on multiple on multiple fronts of
battle?
I'm not sure it would be interesting to see the different locations and
places where the rest of the war is raging. But focusing on one
character can be beneficial as you can say that their like special forces
and travels to different parts of the empire to help secure victory. And
it can be better with one person as you experience the characters
choices and decisions as you make them. Which can change the game.
19. Interview 2
• Observation:
This person was very interested in the future of the game when I asked
them about the customizability they freaked out. This has been
something that has been talked about with the famed zombies mode
in the call of duty franchise but has never been made.
• What this says about my audience:
That they want customizability and some control in the games
direction. This could be the next best thing if the players also
contributed to the games main goal. Too give the gaming franchise a
new genre of gaming. “Alternate History”
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
This would be the first of multiple alternate history games and the
same fans would come back year after year.
20. Audience Profile
Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience
Age Range
13-28
• The ages between 13 and 28 are respectable as most understandable as
most kids play games and with newer consoles and games they will be
playing on games that wont be age recommended.
• Adults under 28 I think would also be a huge part of this demographic, as
they will be working but will play games in their spare times.
Gender
Male/female • I don’t think my project would pick or choose what gender you are
as it can appeal to anyone.
• It does kind of steer towards the grim and true face of war with
parts of human bodies scattering the battlefield. Its not ideal for a
girl or even a guy that doesn’t like graphic images.
Psychographic
- Respects history
- Patriotism
- Creative
- Loves games
- Lives in U.K or a
former colony of
empire.
• Mainly because it’s about British culture and the other
cultures that relate to those who was once in a British
colony.
• People who like history and like alternate histories
changing what could have been our life.
• Patriotism for your country as you will play as an imperial
soldier from different regions in the empire.
Social Status Any
• Doesn’t really matter your social status.
• As long as you have enough money to buy
the game like £49.99
22. Research Evaluation
• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the
strengths and weaknesses of each method
– Product Research
– For my product their isn’t anything like it so I had to compare it to others
that are kind of similar. But are not related in the genre.
– Some like Battlefield 1 is similar but with a better outcome for the empire.
– Questionnaires
– Questionnaires went well as I got a lot of responses and most of the
answers were constructive and helped me understand my audience.
– It also helped me know what people expect in campaigns now in games
and how to improve on them.
– Interviews
– Interviewing people gave me extra details that I needed to know, It helped
me with what I should design for my finale project and what to write for
the article.
23. Research Evaluation
– What sort of a response did you get?
– Mostly constructive and helpful opinions that has opened my view of my
project, and future ideas.
– A few “not bothered” people but still helped me understand that most of the
gaming community wants a campaign that’s longer then just a few hours and a
possible continues story.
– A few ideas for different factions to be playable and able to be played in
separate games dedicated to them.
– How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage
– The advantage is that I got a lot of constructive criticism from people who are
invested in the idea of this game.
– The disadvantage some people didn’t leave any helpful information and just
thought it was far fetched and couldn’t ever be an actual thing.
