The Scarlet Letter William And Hester Relationship
They say that opposites attract and this holds true for the relationship between William and Hester as
they learn more about one another. The husband and wife came from different upbringings. William is
born with a strict father among the Back Creek Folk , while his wife is considered one of the Gap
people with flexible, supportive parents. The way their parents raised them influences the way they
act. William is a hard worker who speaks very little, but his wife Hester does enough talking for the
both of them. Hester is a strong woman and manages the family farm very well. She is able to make
decisions quickly without William s input. The farm is considered to be most prosperous in
Mcpherson County. The couple s three sons work on the

Operation Overlord
By 1944 World War II had lasted nearly four and a half years. The entire war now depended on the
success or failure of an invasion of France. The first three years of the war had almost entirely been a
chain of Nazi victories. They had succeeded in crushing Poland and forcing France to surrender. Hitler
s attempts at capturing England were halted by the RAF,
Royal Air Force. After the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hitler declared war on the
United States and forced Italy to follow.
By November of 1942 Hitler began to pay for his string of mistakes. In Egypt his favorite

Many of the British commanders in attendance had served in the first World War and were weary of
sending mass amounts of troops into a battle where the enemy may be laying and waiting for them.
The plan was complicated, precise and heavily relied on the element of surprise. Timing and
coordination were of great importance, a failure at one of the hundred points could send the whole
balanced plan in to chaos. The first assault wave would have eight division, close to
80,000 men. Three of the eight divisions, 1 of Britain and two of the United States, would be airborne
paratroopers and glider troops that would be dropped at night. The other five divisions would be
Infantry divisions and would land on five beaches at the crack of dawn. After the
Atlantic Wall had been broken by the first assault and a stable beachhead was obtained, more than
thirty nine divisions would rapidly pour in.
Capturing a strong hold of a beachhead was crucial to the success of the invasion. The beachhead
would need to be able to hold back the inevitable counterattack of strong German forces. A port would
have to be seized to be able to supply necessary supplies for land invasion.
A strategic drop was to be made at the Contentin Peninsula of Normandy because its North was
Cherbourg a major harbor. Unless this mission was successful, supplies would have to be shipped
through open invasion beaches subject to

The Beat Generation San Francisco s Culture Of Dissent...
The essay entitled The Beat Generation ans San Francisco s Culture of Dissent by Nancy J. Peters,
talks about the Beat Generation, Bohemianism and other issues in the 90 s that affected America s
literature and poetry today. The Beat Generation emerged in the 1950 s and they were a group of artist
s, writer s and poets. The term beat was coined by Jack Kerouac, author and poet, who is perhaps the
most recognized name and face of the group. There were many recurring topics in the Beats poetry that
later on described their literary characteristics. They wrote about nature and jazz but also focused
more on sex and drugs. They embraced their originality and individuality in their literary works by
rejecting and questioning the societal norms. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were many openly gay Beats poets or writers, like Allen Ginsberg, while others were bisexual
so they often talked about sex candidly in their works. Their works became the talk of the town, with
Howl and On the Road being subjected to court for obscenity. They were not afraid of showcasing
obscenities and their works and for their works to be banned. They were ticked off by the judgmental
society and writing about sex and drugs is their way of raising their voice against the society. Drugs
are also a major recurring topics and/ or reference in their works. The writer s experimented with
different kinds of drugs from marijuana to LSD s given the fact that they are in San Francisco, a very

Introversion In The Mid-17th Century
In the seventeen years that I ve been alive, I have relished spending my days in a very particular
manner. Alone. And that s not to say that spending time with my closest friends has never brought me
pleasure; our late nights at wrestling competitions, playing video games, just shooting the breeze are
some of my most enjoyable memories. It s just that there s something soothing about solitary reading,
quiet introspection, and exercising alone toward which I gravitate. According to my mom it s because
she didn t arrange enough playdates for me when I was a little kid. It may just be that I was born
predestined to have an inclination towards solitude, like some puritanical hermit. But regardless of the
reasons for my social preferences, what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Be it rappers, outspoken politicians, flamboyant actors, or any number of outgoing personas,
Americans admire individuals for their attention commanding qualities. To quote Susan Cain, a former
corporate lawyer, and Tedx acknowledged authority on introversion, shyness implies submissiveness.
And in a competitive culture that reveres alpha dogs, one downmanship is probably the most damning
trait of all. THAT is why I find it so important to separate the concept of introversion from shyness: To
dispel any notion of weakness, to deny any perception of social disadvantage, and to debunk the idea
that introverts are in any way incapable of being functional members of society. After all, I m a living
contradiction to that

Ishmael Chapter Reflection Paper
The chapters introduce some of the effects hunger has on human physiology and behavior. I learned
the glimpse of disrespect, discords among the villagers, forceful recruits from the rebels, misbehavior
among the youth and lack of trust amongst the villagers because of experience from torture, mass
killings, mutilations, and wars. It is vivid that one doesn t have to be in the military to suffer psychosis
issues such as depression and PTSD as reflected in Ishmael, who felt these and expresses the feelings
multiple times in the assigned chapters. I learned from the character of a mother with a five year old
boy, who accommodated the six homeless and hungry boys that forcefully grabbed the two hairs of
corn from her son. All these greatly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Personally, I cannot fathom the reality of not experiencing nor enjoying my youthful years, the
experience Ismael missed in his growth development which makes me feel bad for him. Ishmael never
gets an answer to know if his family (grand parents, parents, and siblings) is dead or alive, which is a
pain he bears for life.
Furthermore, I think I changed from the way I participated in the discourse to express more about how
I feel and how it has impacted me rather than expressing more on what happens to Ishmael in the
chapters. Based on the discourse, I have changed knowing that even the next person to me might be a
victim of one assault or the other. I have changed to be more sensitive to people s feelings and
behaviors. I believe my facilitation is an effective one because I actively got everyone engaged,
empowered them to express their personal feelings, made them observed the ground rules, and utilized
the text book by incorporating in text citations to the discourse from Holtz (2017) that expresses how
the boy soldiers are involuntarily recruited by being kidnapped from their villages and forced to
commit atrocities upon threat of their own death (p. 152). At a point in time I have to offer fruits

The Character Analysis Of Guy Monttag, By Ray Bradbury
Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the
question when you are the answer (Campbell). Guy Montag is very dedicated to his work as a fireman,
he fits the stereotypical role due to his physical appearance. His job is to burn and destroy illegal
books. The book is named after the temperature at which book papers ignite. Montag is prideful of his
work, he burns everything to the ground, devoid of thinking or feeling. Montag is the protagonist,
although there are countless others who could have taken his place as the protagonist; there were also
others who fought against society, nevertheless he was the one fireman that went against his ideals and
changed significantly due to meeting Clarisse, Faber and the old woman, because he was searching for
the meaning of his existence. After meeting Clarisse, Montag begins to question society. Clarisse is
very straightforward and clear to Montag. He said that he can see himself in her eyes. How rarely did
other people s faces take of you and throw back to your own expression, your own innermost
trembling thought? (Bradbury 11). She makes him aware that he never stops to think. He tells Mildred
that Clarisse was the first person I can remember who looked straight at me as if I counted (Bradbury
72). Through his friendship with Clarisse McClellan, Montag recognizes how cruel society can be as
opposed to the joys of nature in which he rarely experiences. When Clarisse makes

American Hustle Movie Analysis
The Art of Survival
I ve always had a particular fondness for movies that made me think. I love long, drawn out movie
scripts that include lots of plot twists, where the movies intent and message is not always clear right
up front. This particular reason is why I chose to evaluate the movie American Hustle. I really enjoy
watching this movie because of the overall story, the characters, and the actors that were cast in this
production. The movie, American Hustle, is a comedy drama that is loosely based on the real life FBI
sting, called ABSCAM, that took place in the late 1970 s and early 1980 s. The movie centers around
two con artist named Irving Rosenfeld, played by Christian Bale, and Sydney Prosser, played by Amy
Adams, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My favorites were Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro. The transformation that
Bale put himself through in order to play this role was incredible. He has a history of gaining and
losing weight for various roles but I had never actually seen this for myself until I watched this movie.
Bale gained 43 pounds, shaved his head to produce a realistic comb over, and changed his posture by
slouching which shortened his height by 3 inches and resulted in a herniated disc. Jennifer Lawrence
was very good in this film. I love how she can immerse herself into any character, bring them to life,
and still have pieces of her own personality shine through. Even though Robert De Niro s part in this
movie was practically nonexistent, he still made a lasting impression on me. He played the part of a
legendary mob boss and casino owner named Victor Tellegio. I felt this character fit De Niro so well
because he has this serious demeanor and at times can look very intimidating. In his scene, De Niro is
sitting down at a pool table with the sheikh and a couple of other mob bosses as well as Bradley
Coopers character, and he attempts to talk to the sheikh in English. Coopers character, Richie DiMaso,
informs Victor Tellegio that the Sheikh only speaks Arabic and, unbeknownst to anyone else at the

The Importance Of A Steady Source Of Light
For thousands of years, man had used the sun as the main source of light during the day and fire by
night. Light progressed from crude shells filled with moss or animal fat to pottery vessels filled with
whale oil2. In 1802, Humphry David placed two wires from a battery to a piece of carbon and created
the first electric light. While it did not produce light for very long and was too bright for everyday use,
it gave hope to inventors everywhere who believed that a steady source of light could be created3. It
was not until almost seventy years and countless hours of research later, that the modern electric light
came into existence. This discovery literally changed the world. Thomas Edison recognized the
importance of a steady source of light and is credited with the first of several patents on a bulb that
used a carbonized bamboo filament. But perhaps his most important contribution was to recognize the
future of the light bulb and he went on to invent a method of transporting electric current and tracking
electric usage. Other inventors took the light bulb to its next level with the invention of the tungsten
filament and how to use an inert gas like nitrogen inside the bulb to increase efficiency4. The first
light bulb was called an incandescent bulb. This light bulb was originally produced by hand, but now
the manufacturing process is entirely automated and light bulbs are produced in a machine that can
produce more than 50,000 bulbs per hour5. The production

Algae Research Paper
One world environmental issue that we have to turn our attention to is poaching, specifically in Africa,
of animals such as elephants, zebras, lions, black rhinos, and mountain gorillas. Last year alone, over
35000 elephants were killed for their ivory tusks. Ivory is sold illegally for up to $1000 per pound, and
the tusks are often carved into jewelry, religious figurines, utensils, and other small trinkets. Around
2000 zebras remain in the wild, and these animals are sought after for their black and white striped
skins, which are often made into clothing or accessories. The surviving lion population is a mere 15%
of what it used to be, and that is because farmers keep killing them before the lions kill their livestock.
Lions are often hunted for fun too, most recently Cecil. The black rhino population is down 97.6%
since 1960, and these animals are killed for their valuable horns. The horns are believed to heal
various ailments, when in reality, the horns do not cure anything, it s all myth. Fewer than 900

one of the safest cars in India. It also attracted senior citizen because of the ease of drive provided by

Ray Bradbury Influences
Ray Bradbury is known as one of the most influential writers in the science fiction genre. His most
famous works Fahrenheit 451 and Something Wicked This Way Comes incorporate common science
fiction themes but are made to be something even more interesting with Bradbury s unique style and
ideas. Although he is most well known for his science fiction novels, he also wrote within the genres
of fantasy and horror. Bradbury would often incorporate all three genres in one novel to create a work
that truly went with the ideas running through his head. Ray Bradbury influence the science fiction
genre through his distinct writing style, use of children as symbols, and his use of influences from the
world around him to criticize modern warfare. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was able to instill fear in his readers through writing about things that hit close to home; however,
he could offset the despair with humor. Many science fiction authors set their stories on other planets
or in a different realm, but to Bradbury, science fiction is not the progress of science projected into
alternate worlds, but rather dealing with the impact of various forms of technology on societies that
are familiar to the reader (Wolfe 104). Many of his stories are set in small town USA or in a futuristic,
war torn society that truly isn t an unimaginable possibility for our world. His strength as a writer was
most obvious in the fact that he wrote about things his readers truly cared about, such as the
fundamental fears and longings, not things many choose to distract themselves with like sports,
politics, and crime (Knight 4). Even through the fear and sadness of his novels he can turn a stock
situation inside out; even invest it with a degree of humor (Peirce 65). In many cases there would be a
character ur situation to relieve the tension of the story and give the reader a break from all the

Analysis Of Lurhman s Strictly Ballroom And Mitchell s...
In Lurhman s Strictly Ballroom and Mitchell s It Follows, both directors use colour and music to
enhance the experience of the romantic comedy and horror genre films. Where Mitchell uses audio
and visual cues to break the conventional style of horror films in It Follows, Luhrman s Strictly
Ballroom uses audio and visual cues enhance the romantic comedy experience further. Where It
Follows, relies on visuals to tell it s story, Strictly Ballroom uses bright colors and musical cues to
reassure the audience that the two main characters will end up together.
In Mitchell s It Follows, he enlists the help of composer Vreeland to create music for his film.
Traditionally a composer for video games, Vreeland s music consists of the 8 bit type music that is
consistently found in Vreeland s main line of work. Whereas traditional horror films may carry
orchestral music, Vreeland s music is synthesized and therefore stands out because of it. In
combination with his composer s music, Mitchell also uses silence and natural ambience to further
break the horror music stereotype. Where more popular horror films would use silence, darkness and
loud sounds to help increase tension, Mitchell uses silence and music to do that instead. Vreeland s
music, which mainly contains higher pitched music enhanced by low beats, is mainly used during key
moments that involves the Follower. For example, during our second introduction to It, the music
consists of high pitched (flat sounding?????) notes

Luther Standing Bear Analysis
My First Buffalo, by Luther Standing Bear, may be one of the more terse stories in the anthology,
Native American Autobiography, but it by no means lacks wisdom. When reading the captivating
story, I was struck by the amount of life lessons that could be pulled out of one single experience in
Luther Standing Bear s childhood. On the surface, My Buffalo seems to be a simple coming of age
story, however once properly analyzed, you can find a story that teaches you to listen and respect
those wiser than yourself, to honor the art of hunting and to only speak the truth.
The first lesson I caught onto fairly quickly was to value and listen to you elders. Before his first
Buffalo hunting endeavour, Luther Standing Bear s father gives him some wise words of advice. He
stresses the importance of staying observant, saying, Whatever you do, watch the buffalo closely
(Krupat 301) and warns Luther Standing Bear to keep his eyes open when he passes through dust. He
also urges Luther Standing Bear to hunt with precision and patience. While this advice may seem
obvious and easy to follow, Luther Standing Bear has trouble putting such information into action at
first. When chasing the buffalo, he gets disoriented in the dust and starts to panic. Luther Standing
Bear states, I then realized how helpless I was there in all that dust and confusion. The sound of their
hoofs was frightening (Krupat 303). This moment of panic shows how essential Luther Standing Bear

The American Dream Is Overrated Essay
The American Dream is overrated. Let s just face it, it is dead. Not only is this a dream that is almost
lusted after by many Americans, this is a widely desired illusion that is far out of reach for most
working class people. The American Dream is more than the lifestyle of white picket fences that hold
backyard barbecues with your neighbors. It s earning a living wage that creates a comfortable quality
of life, having the security of retirement, and giving your children the opportunity to live a successful
life. The American Dream doesn t run on magic and fairy dust, it is fueled by hard earned American
dollars, persistence, and hope. Most modern, working class families can t expect to receive a
reasonable income to cover things such as medical expenses and emergencies. With that said, the stay
at home parent trying to reach the goal of a perfect oasis is even more taboo. It s hard to achieve this
dream , when you re the only breadwinner in your household. Parents can no longer live comfortably,
and in some cases even survive, on one person s income. The costs of homes, transportation, and
education combined with incredibly low wages often leaves families in a crippling financial situation,

DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
FROM: JULIAN HOFFMAN, ECONOMIC ANALYST
SUBJECT: PROPOSED MERGER OF US AIRWAYS AND AMERICAN AIRLINES
DATE: JULY 15, 2013 Executive Summary
This memo is in response to your request for an analysis of the economic implications of the potential
merger of US Airways Group and the AMR Corporation (parent company of American Airlines), plans
for which were announced in February of this year. While US Airways Group is currently operating
normally, AMR Corporation is under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to a lack of profit, putting
it in a precarious business situation. This proposed merger is AMR Corporation s proposed path out of
bankruptcy, and one which both airlines claim could result in more than $1.5 billion in additional
revenues and cost savings on an annual basis. (Wall Street Journal, 2012)
This proposed merger would create the largest airline in the United States by market share, with a
combined 21.2% of the domestic market using pre merger market share levels (see Figure 1). The
proposed merger would also bring the total number of major domestic airlines down to four: Delta,
United, Southwest and the proposed new airline. These major domestic carriers would combine to
control roughly 69% of the market, a dominant position.
Any thorough economic analysis of the proposed merger has to focus in on this critical issue: the risk

Pride In C. S. Lewis The Magician s Nephew
Taking Away Harm [2] In C. S. Lewis s breathtaking novel The Magician s Nephew, the Christian
themes of sin of pride, objected truth vs. relativism, and redemption are developed throughout Digory
s characterization in the novel. [1] Digory embodied sin of pride by wanting power or knowledge that
was not bestowed upon him. Digory and polly were in Charn and Polly told him not to foolishly strike
the bell, but Digory exclaimed We shall always be wondering what else would have happened if we
had struck the bell (Lewis 56). When Digory was in Charn he rang the bell because he was trying to
obtain knowledge that was not given to him therefore bringing evil into Narnia. Using her evilness,
Jadis tries to make Digory commit a sin. As Digory approached

Urinary Tract Infections ( Cautis )
Background and Significance
Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are caused by transmission of bacteria to the
urinary tract via the urinary catheter during catheter insertion, via the catheter lumen, or by handling
of the catheter drainage bag (Mori, 2014). Urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for about 35% of
hospital acquired infections (HAIs) and about 80% of the UTIs are related to the presence of
indwelling urinary catheter (IUC). CAUTIs are a significant problem affecting the patients as well as
the health care system as they are linked with increased morbidity and mortality, increased health care
expenses, and extended hospitalization (Gould, 2015).
CAUTIs can result to patient s complications such urethritis, urethral strictures, bloody urine, bladder
obstruction and sepsis. In addition, the catheter drainage bag may be a reservoir of pathogens that can
result to more critical HAIs (Apostolopoulou, 2015). Approximately 13,000 deaths are associated with
UTIs every year. A total health care cost of approximately $0.4 $0.5 billion is spent for CAUTI
incidences and it s complications in the United States annually. The length of hospital stay related to
CAUTIs extends from two to four days (Gould, 2015).
As of October 1st, 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began withholding
reimbursement to hospitals for treatment of HAIs including the CAUTIs. The duration of the catheter
use has been identified as a major risk factor for

Vaccinations In The Central African Republic
Vaccinations are an incredible innovation, and without them, our world would be quite different.
These lifesaving inventions have always been quite controversial, and without knowing what they are
fully capable of, some people and governments won t take any further actions to get vaccinations to
people who are in need. For example, in India, the government is very detached from the issue, and
hasn t invested in the heavily needed vaccines for its people. Especially the children, as one third of
the children unvaccinated in the entire world reside in India. Also, Recent events in countries have
drastically impacted how many people receive vaccines. As in the Central African Republic, the
country has been in a fuming ongoing civil war that has killed over 6,000 people from its upbringing
in 2012. People in the Central African Republic have been displaced, and are in desperate need other
things, such as food or water. The longer a person goes without a vaccine, the higher the chance is of
contracting a disease or virus. In Nigeria alone, the national data showed less than 30% coverage for
all antigens, and this decreased to 12.9% [in] 2003 (NCBI). Vaccines are a significant problem today
because people are very uneducated about them.

Thematic content analysis was used in order to be able to draw conclusions from the qualitative data
from the interviews and document review (DeSantis Noel Ugarriza, 2000). Qualitative content
analysis is defined as: a research method for the subjective interpretation of the content of text data
through the systematic classification process of coding and identifying themes or patterns (Hsieh
Shannon, 2005, p.1278). This means that the data input is evaluated to search for patterns that extend
across the data and coded into categories in order to develop data interpretations (Vaismoradi,
Turunen, Bondas, 2013). For this purpose ATLAS.ti was used to analyse the qualitative data findings.
Codes were first prepared in accordance with the theoretical framework (for this framework see
Appendix B) (Braun Clarke, 2006). ATLAS.ti was used for assigning open codes as well as to create
coding memos. Codes and themes were analysed and related to theory formulation (see Appendix C
for the code book that was used in ATLAS.ti) (for a review and practical guide to using qualitative
data analysis see Hwang, 2008). For each code, an output was created. This output consists of a file in
which all the quotations of a certain code to be put one after the other, these are the passages that are
encoded from all the transcripts. This output file then gives a quick

What Occurred During The Renaissance
Giancarlo Velasquez
The Renaissance
The renaissance was a period of major advancements. From art to technology and from literature to
architecture. Artists, inventors, playwrights, architects all played huge rolls during the renaissance.
The reason why the renaissance happened was because towards the end of the Black Plague many
people were dying so they wanted to change their lifestyle. People wanted to change the way they do
things. There wasn t just one Black Plague there were a bundle of them. Since they were tired of many
people dying they chose to change how they do things. Art had a major impact during the renaissance.
The most famous artists that made a huge impact in art were Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello,
Leonardo, and Masaccio. You may remember the first four artist named from the hit tv show/movie
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (tmnt). But your probably thinking who the heck is Masaccio. Well he
is the guy that Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello, Leonardo all learned from. The funny thing is that
Masaccios nickname is the splinter which is also from the tv show. But never mind the whole tv show
and what not. Let s focus on how did Michelangelo, Rapheal, Donatello, Leonardo change art or
advanced art. Michelangelo was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now technology probably had one the biggest or greatest role during the renaissance. There were
many and I mean many inventions during that helped change people s daily lives. Some inventions
that were made during the renaissance is the printing press, mechanical clock, small piano, lenses for
near sighted people, telescope, blood transfusion. The reason why technology had a huge role is
because it changed people s lives for example the mechanical clock with out it people would be late
for school or work, or printing press without it the bible would ve never been created. So see how
technology had a major role during the

Joan Of Arc s Accomplishments
Would the world be different if Joan of Arc hadn t united France? Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who
lived in France. The people of France called her Maid of Orléans. She is still known as one of France s
greatest Saints for her many accomplishments. Joan of Arc has lead France to many great victories,
but her greatest accomplishment was uniting France. Being a woman these accomplishments were
hard for her because she had little support and no military training to be prepared for these battles. The
low support she had did not stop her, however she was confident she could come out with a victory.
She had many struggles along the way, and lost many battles, but she became one of France s greatest
Saints. Joan of Arc was the daughter of a

Essay on The Pardoner’s Tale vs. The Chaucer’s Prologue
Geoffrey Chaucer introduces numerous characters in the prologue of The Canterbury Tales; each
character possessing a distinct personality and lifestyle. Chaucer gives insight into the lives of the
characters on their pilgrimage to Canterbury. The Pardoner unfurls his thoughts and feelings giving us
extended insight into his own character, by providing us with a tale of his own. In doing so, he
contrasts other pious figures who are introduced in the prologue, with character traits consisting of an
effeminate lifestyle, avariciousness, as well as hypocrisy. The Pardoner is first introduced in the
prologue, in which Chaucer describes him as gentle (General Prologue 675). Chaucer gives reference
to the Summoner and the Pardoner being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chaucer constantly describes the Pardoner as a pejorative character who is not living life as he should,
rather enjoying the luxuries and the latest trends of the world. Aside from grooming in feminine like
fashion, the Pardoner also rides his horse side saddle for he aims to [ride] in the latest mode (General
Prologue 688). Chaucer insists the Pardoner is guilty of greed which he uses to disguise his
hypocritical way of life For in his trunk he had a pillowcase Which he asserted was Our Lady s veil
(General Prologue 700 01). Chaucer gives hints as to the Pardoner s traits that later expand throughout
the Pardoner s Tale. Chaucer s portrait of him in the Prologue shows him as deficient in body,
depraved in soul, and poor in spirituality. Contrarily, the Pardoner s character is centered on the
professional activities in The Pardoner s Tale. Through his tale, the Pardoner tells of a story about
three men who spent much of their time gambling, drinking, dancing, and visiting brothels. The three
eventually die through trickery and treachery as a result of their own greed. Ironically, the Pardoner
emphasizes his own sin through the telling of his tale: greed. He always has his wallet ready on his lap
(General Prologue 692) because Brimful of pardons come from Rome (Prologue 693). Chaucer
indicates that the Pardoner takes bribes to pardon people thus living a hypocritical life. In The
Pardoner s Tale, the Pardoner not only highlights

The Iron Cage By Sociologist Max Weber
Have you ever felt trapped within the daily responsibilities and tasks that make up your daily agenda
or planner? Have you ever felt as an individual who s not living his or her own life, but rather living
by the standards and norms opposed and followed by the members of our modern day society? If your
answer is yes to any of the two questions above, then you are experiencing and living what is known
today as the Iron Cage . The Iron Cage refers to a very simple, yet complex theory developed by
sociologist Max Weber. In his theory which addresses a sociological problem regarding standards of
living; Dr. Alana Bibeau further deliberated on how Weber argues, that an individual s life is being
transformed not only by the ideas of efficiency, but shaped by the increasing means of rationality and
calculability. Though it can be argued by some that the increasing means of efficiency, rationality, and
calculability have no impact on the identity and development of a person, I stand strong to the belief
that the increasing means of these three factors, contribute to an individual s loss of identity; at the
same time these three factors also contribute and shape an individual s life, this of course, going in
accordance with what society has been idealized with within the context of Weber s theory of the Iron
Cage .
For my first experimental project, my group and I focused on how wellness centers are Iron Caged

The first three years of the war had almost entirely been a chain of Nazi victories. They had succeeded in crushing Poland and forcing France to surrender. Hitler s attempts at capturing England were halted by the RAF, Royal Air Force. After the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hitler declared war on the United States and forced Italy to follow. By November of 1942 Hitler began to pay for his string of mistakes. Many of the British commanders in attendance had served in the first World War and were weary of sending mass amounts of troops into a battle where the enemy may be laying and waiting for them. The plan was complicated, precise and heavily relied on the element of surprise. Timing and coordination were of great importance, a failure at one of the hundred points could send the whole balanced plan in to chaos. The first assault wave would have eight division, close to 80,000 men. Three of the eight divisions, 1 of Britain and two of the United States, would be airborne paratroopers and glider troops that would be dropped at night. The other five divisions would be Infantry divisions and would land on five beaches at the crack of dawn. After the Atlantic Wall had been broken by the first assault and a stable beachhead was obtained, more than thirty nine divisions would rapidly pour in. Capturing a strong hold of a beachhead was crucial to the success of the invasion. The beachhead would need to be able to hold back the inevitable counterattack of strong German forces. A port would have to be seized to be able to supply necessary supplies for land invasion. A strategic drop was to be made at the Contentin Peninsula of Normandy because its North was Cherbourg a major harbor. Unless this mission was successful, supplies would have to be shipped through open invasion beaches subject to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Peters, talks about the Beat Generation, Bohemianism and other issues in the 90 s that affected America s literature and poetry today. The Beat Generation emerged in the 1950 s and they were a group of artist s, writer s and poets. The term beat was coined by Jack Kerouac, author and poet, who is perhaps the most recognized name and face of the group. There were many recurring topics in the Beats poetry that later on described their literary characteristics. They wrote about nature and jazz but also focused more on sex and drugs. They embraced their originality and individuality in their literary works by rejecting and questioning the societal norms. ... They were not afraid of showcasing obscenities and their works and for their works to be banned. They were ticked off by the judgmental society and writing about sex and drugs is their way of raising their voice against the society. • 6. Introversion In The Mid-17th Century In the seventeen years that I ve been alive, I have relished spending my days in a very particular manner. Alone. And that s not to say that spending time with my closest friends has never brought me pleasure; our late nights at wrestling competitions, playing video games, just shooting the breeze are some of my most enjoyable memories. It s just that there s something soothing about solitary reading, quiet introspection, and exercising alone toward which I gravitate. According to my mom it s because she didn t arrange enough playdates for me when I was a little kid. It may just be that I was born predestined to have an inclination towards solitude, like some puritanical hermit. But regardless of the reasons for my social preferences, what ... Be it rappers, outspoken politicians, flamboyant actors, or any number of outgoing personas, Americans admire individuals for their attention commanding qualities. To quote Susan Cain, a former corporate lawyer, and Tedx acknowledged authority on introversion, shyness implies submissiveness. And in a competitive culture that reveres alpha dogs, one downmanship is probably the most damning trait of all. THAT is why I find it so important to separate the concept of introversion from shyness: To dispel any notion of weakness, to deny any perception of social disadvantage, and to debunk the idea that introverts are in any way incapable of being functional members of society. After all, I m a living contradiction to that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I learned the glimpse of disrespect, discords among the villagers, forceful recruits from the rebels, misbehavior among the youth and lack of trust amongst the villagers because of experience from torture, mass killings, mutilations, and wars. It is vivid that one doesn t have to be in the military to suffer psychosis issues such as depression and PTSD as reflected in Ishmael, who felt these and expresses the feelings multiple times in the assigned chapters. I learned from the character of a mother with a five year old boy, who accommodated the six homeless and hungry boys that forcefully grabbed the two hairs of corn from her son. All these greatly ... Personally, I cannot fathom the reality of not experiencing nor enjoying my youthful years, the experience Ismael missed in his growth development which makes me feel bad for him. Ishmael never gets an answer to know if his family (grand parents, parents, and siblings) is dead or alive, which is a pain he bears for life. Furthermore, I think I changed from the way I participated in the discourse to express more about how I feel and how it has impacted me rather than expressing more on what happens to Ishmael in the chapters. Based on the discourse, I have changed knowing that even the next person to me might be a victim of one assault or the other. I have changed to be more sensitive to people s feelings and behaviors. I believe my facilitation is an effective one because I actively got everyone engaged, empowered them to express their personal feelings, made them observed the ground rules, and utilized the text book by incorporating in text citations to the discourse from Holtz (2017) that expresses how the boy soldiers are involuntarily recruited by being kidnapped from their villages and forced to commit atrocities upon threat of their own death (p. 152). • 8. The Character Analysis Of Guy Monttag, By Ray Bradbury Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer (Campbell). Guy Montag is very dedicated to his work as a fireman, he fits the stereotypical role due to his physical appearance. His job is to burn and destroy illegal books. The book is named after the temperature at which book papers ignite. Montag is prideful of his work, he burns everything to the ground, devoid of thinking or feeling. Montag is the protagonist, although there are countless others who could have taken his place as the protagonist; there were also others who fought against society, nevertheless he was the one fireman that went against his ideals and changed significantly due to meeting Clarisse, Faber and the old woman, because he was searching for the meaning of his existence. After meeting Clarisse, Montag begins to question society. Clarisse is very straightforward and clear to Montag. He said that he can see himself in her eyes. How rarely did other people s faces take of you and throw back to your own expression, your own innermost trembling thought? (Bradbury 11). She makes him aware that he never stops to think. He tells Mildred that Clarisse was the first person I can remember who looked straight at me as if I counted (Bradbury 72). I love long, drawn out movie scripts that include lots of plot twists, where the movies intent and message is not always clear right up front. This particular reason is why I chose to evaluate the movie American Hustle. I really enjoy watching this movie because of the overall story, the characters, and the actors that were cast in this production. The movie, American Hustle, is a comedy drama that is loosely based on the real life FBI sting, called ABSCAM, that took place in the late 1970 s and early 1980 s. The movie centers around two con artist named Irving Rosenfeld, played by Christian Bale, and Sydney Prosser, played by Amy Adams, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My favorites were Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro. The transformation that Bale put himself through in order to play this role was incredible. He has a history of gaining and losing weight for various roles but I had never actually seen this for myself until I watched this movie. Bale gained 43 pounds, shaved his head to produce a realistic comb over, and changed his posture by slouching which shortened his height by 3 inches and resulted in a herniated disc. Jennifer Lawrence was very good in this film. I love how she can immerse herself into any character, bring them to life, and still have pieces of her own personality shine through. Even though Robert De Niro s part in this movie was practically nonexistent, he still made a lasting impression on me. He played the part of a legendary mob boss and casino owner named Victor Tellegio. I felt this character fit De Niro so well because he has this serious demeanor and at times can look very intimidating. In his scene, De Niro is sitting down at a pool table with the sheikh and a couple of other mob bosses as well as Bradley Coopers character, and he attempts to talk to the sheikh in English. Coopers character, Richie DiMaso, informs Victor Tellegio that the Sheikh only speaks Arabic and, unbeknownst to anyone else at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Importance Of A Steady Source Of Light For thousands of years, man had used the sun as the main source of light during the day and fire by night. Light progressed from crude shells filled with moss or animal fat to pottery vessels filled with whale oil2. In 1802, Humphry David placed two wires from a battery to a piece of carbon and created the first electric light. While it did not produce light for very long and was too bright for everyday use, it gave hope to inventors everywhere who believed that a steady source of light could be created3. It was not until almost seventy years and countless hours of research later, that the modern electric light came into existence. This discovery literally changed the world. Thomas Edison recognized the importance of a steady source of light and is credited with the first of several patents on a bulb that used a carbonized bamboo filament. But perhaps his most important contribution was to recognize the future of the light bulb and he went on to invent a method of transporting electric current and tracking electric usage. Other inventors took the light bulb to its next level with the invention of the tungsten filament and how to use an inert gas like nitrogen inside the bulb to increase efficiency4. The first light bulb was called an incandescent bulb. This light bulb was originally produced by hand, but now the manufacturing process is entirely automated and light bulbs are produced in a machine that can produce more than 50,000 bulbs per hour5. Algae Research Paper One world environmental issue that we have to turn our attention to is poaching, specifically in Africa, of animals such as elephants, zebras, lions, black rhinos, and mountain gorillas. Last year alone, over 35000 elephants were killed for their ivory tusks. Ivory is sold illegally for up to $1000 per pound, and the tusks are often carved into jewelry, religious figurines, utensils, and other small trinkets. Around 2000 zebras remain in the wild, and these animals are sought after for their black and white striped skins, which are often made into clothing or accessories. The surviving lion population is a mere 15% of what it used to be, and that is because farmers keep killing them before the lions kill their livestock. Lions are often hunted for fun too, most recently Cecil. The black rhino population is down 97.6% since 1960, and these animals are killed for their valuable horns. The horns are believed to heal various ailments, when in reality, the horns do not cure anything, it s all myth. His most famous works Fahrenheit 451 and Something Wicked This Way Comes incorporate common science fiction themes but are made to be something even more interesting with Bradbury s unique style and ideas. Although he is most well known for his science fiction novels, he also wrote within the genres of fantasy and horror. Bradbury would often incorporate all three genres in one novel to create a work that truly went with the ideas running through his head. Many of his stories are set in small town USA or in a futuristic, war torn society that truly isn t an unimaginable possibility for our world. His strength as a writer was most obvious in the fact that he wrote about things his readers truly cared about, such as the fundamental fears and longings, not things many choose to distract themselves with like sports, politics, and crime (Knight 4). • 15. Analysis Of Lurhman s Strictly Ballroom And Mitchell s... In Lurhman s Strictly Ballroom and Mitchell s It Follows, both directors use colour and music to enhance the experience of the romantic comedy and horror genre films. Where Mitchell uses audio and visual cues to break the conventional style of horror films in It Follows, Luhrman s Strictly Ballroom uses audio and visual cues enhance the romantic comedy experience further. Where It Follows, relies on visuals to tell it s story, Strictly Ballroom uses bright colors and musical cues to reassure the audience that the two main characters will end up together. In Mitchell s It Follows, he enlists the help of composer Vreeland to create music for his film. Traditionally a composer for video games, Vreeland s music consists of the 8 bit type music that is consistently found in Vreeland s main line of work. Whereas traditional horror films may carry orchestral music, Vreeland s music is synthesized and therefore stands out because of it. In combination with his composer s music, Mitchell also uses silence and natural ambience to further break the horror music stereotype. Where more popular horror films would use silence, darkness and loud sounds to help increase tension, Mitchell uses silence and music to do that instead. Vreeland s music, which mainly contains higher pitched music enhanced by low beats, is mainly used during key moments that involves the Follower. • 16. Luther Standing Bear Analysis My First Buffalo, by Luther Standing Bear, may be one of the more terse stories in the anthology, Native American Autobiography, but it by no means lacks wisdom. When reading the captivating story, I was struck by the amount of life lessons that could be pulled out of one single experience in Luther Standing Bear s childhood. On the surface, My Buffalo seems to be a simple coming of age story, however once properly analyzed, you can find a story that teaches you to listen and respect those wiser than yourself, to honor the art of hunting and to only speak the truth. The first lesson I caught onto fairly quickly was to value and listen to you elders. Before his first Buffalo hunting endeavour, Luther Standing Bear s father gives him some wise words of advice. He stresses the importance of staying observant, saying, Whatever you do, watch the buffalo closely (Krupat 301) and warns Luther Standing Bear to keep his eyes open when he passes through dust. He also urges Luther Standing Bear to hunt with precision and patience. While this advice may seem obvious and easy to follow, Luther Standing Bear has trouble putting such information into action at first. When chasing the buffalo, he gets disoriented in the dust and starts to panic. Luther Standing Bear states, I then realized how helpless I was there in all that dust and confusion. The sound of their hoofs was frightening (Krupat 303). • 18. The American Dream Is Overrated Essay The American Dream is overrated. Let s just face it, it is dead. Not only is this a dream that is almost lusted after by many Americans, this is a widely desired illusion that is far out of reach for most working class people. The American Dream is more than the lifestyle of white picket fences that hold backyard barbecues with your neighbors. It s earning a living wage that creates a comfortable quality of life, having the security of retirement, and giving your children the opportunity to live a successful life. The American Dream doesn t run on magic and fairy dust, it is fueled by hard earned American dollars, persistence, and hope. Most modern, working class families can t expect to receive a reasonable income to cover things such as medical expenses and emergencies. With that said, the stay at home parent trying to reach the goal of a perfect oasis is even more taboo. It s hard to achieve this dream , when you re the only breadwinner in your household. Parents can no longer live comfortably, and in some cases even survive, on one person s income. The costs of homes, transportation, and education combined with incredibly low wages often leaves families in a crippling financial situation, making it virtually impossible to, keep up with the Jones s. Proposed Merger Of Us Airways And American Airlines INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: CHRISTOPHER CARRIGAN, ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL, ANTITRUST DIVISION, DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FROM: JULIAN HOFFMAN, ECONOMIC ANALYST SUBJECT: PROPOSED MERGER OF US AIRWAYS AND AMERICAN AIRLINES DATE: JULY 15, 2013 Executive Summary This memo is in response to your request for an analysis of the economic implications of the potential merger of US Airways Group and the AMR Corporation (parent company of American Airlines), plans for which were announced in February of this year. While US Airways Group is currently operating normally, AMR Corporation is under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to a lack of profit, putting it in a precarious business situation. This proposed merger is AMR Corporation s proposed path out of bankruptcy, and one which both airlines claim could result in more than $1.5 billion in additional revenues and cost savings on an annual basis. (Wall Street Journal, 2012) This proposed merger would create the largest airline in the United States by market share, with a combined 21.2% of the domestic market using pre merger market share levels (see Figure 1). The proposed merger would also bring the total number of major domestic airlines down to four: Delta, United, Southwest and the proposed new airline. These major domestic carriers would combine to control roughly 69% of the market, a dominant position. Any thorough economic analysis of the proposed merger has to focus in on this critical issue: the risk of having too few ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Urinary Tract Infections ( Cautis ) Background and Significance Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are caused by transmission of bacteria to the urinary tract via the urinary catheter during catheter insertion, via the catheter lumen, or by handling of the catheter drainage bag (Mori, 2014). Urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for about 35% of hospital acquired infections (HAIs) and about 80% of the UTIs are related to the presence of indwelling urinary catheter (IUC). CAUTIs are a significant problem affecting the patients as well as the health care system as they are linked with increased morbidity and mortality, increased health care expenses, and extended hospitalization (Gould, 2015). CAUTIs can result to patient s complications such urethritis, urethral strictures, bloody urine, bladder obstruction and sepsis. In addition, the catheter drainage bag may be a reservoir of pathogens that can result to more critical HAIs (Apostolopoulou, 2015). Approximately 13,000 deaths are associated with UTIs every year. A total health care cost of approximately $0.4 $0.5 billion is spent for CAUTI incidences and it s complications in the United States annually. The length of hospital stay related to CAUTIs extends from two to four days (Gould, 2015). As of October 1st, 2008, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began withholding reimbursement to hospitals for treatment of HAIs including the CAUTIs. The duration of the catheter use has been identified as a major risk factor for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Vaccinations In The Central African Republic Vaccinations are an incredible innovation, and without them, our world would be quite different. These lifesaving inventions have always been quite controversial, and without knowing what they are fully capable of, some people and governments won t take any further actions to get vaccinations to people who are in need. For example, in India, the government is very detached from the issue, and hasn t invested in the heavily needed vaccines for its people. Especially the children, as one third of the children unvaccinated in the entire world reside in India. Also, Recent events in countries have drastically impacted how many people receive vaccines. As in the Central African Republic, the country has been in a fuming ongoing civil war that has killed over 6,000 people from its upbringing in 2012. People in the Central African Republic have been displaced, and are in desperate need other things, such as food or water. The longer a person goes without a vaccine, the higher the chance is of contracting a disease or virus. In Nigeria alone, the national data showed less than 30% coverage for all antigens, and this decreased to 12.9% [in] 2003 (NCBI). Thematic content analysis was used in order to be able to draw conclusions from the qualitative data from the interviews and document review (DeSantis Noel Ugarriza, 2000). Qualitative content analysis is defined as: a research method for the subjective interpretation of the content of text data through the systematic classification process of coding and identifying themes or patterns (Hsieh Shannon, 2005, p.1278). This means that the data input is evaluated to search for patterns that extend across the data and coded into categories in order to develop data interpretations (Vaismoradi, Turunen, Bondas, 2013). For this purpose ATLAS.ti was used to analyse the qualitative data findings. Codes were first prepared in accordance with the theoretical framework (for this framework see Appendix B) (Braun Clarke, 2006). ATLAS.ti was used for assigning open codes as well as to create coding memos. Codes and themes were analysed and related to theory formulation (see Appendix C for the code book that was used in ATLAS.ti) (for a review and practical guide to using qualitative data analysis see Hwang, 2008). For each code, an output was created. This output consists of a file in which all the quotations of a certain code to be put one after the other, these are the passages that are encoded from all the transcripts. • 32. Essay on The Pardoner’s Tale vs. The Chaucer’s Prologue Geoffrey Chaucer introduces numerous characters in the prologue of The Canterbury Tales; each character possessing a distinct personality and lifestyle. Chaucer gives insight into the lives of the characters on their pilgrimage to Canterbury. The Pardoner unfurls his thoughts and feelings giving us extended insight into his own character, by providing us with a tale of his own. In doing so, he contrasts other pious figures who are introduced in the prologue, with character traits consisting of an effeminate lifestyle, avariciousness, as well as hypocrisy. The Pardoner is first introduced in the prologue, in which Chaucer describes him as gentle (General Prologue 675). Chaucer gives reference to the Summoner and the Pardoner being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chaucer constantly describes the Pardoner as a pejorative character who is not living life as he should, rather enjoying the luxuries and the latest trends of the world. Aside from grooming in feminine like fashion, the Pardoner also rides his horse side saddle for he aims to [ride] in the latest mode (General Prologue 688). Chaucer insists the Pardoner is guilty of greed which he uses to disguise his hypocritical way of life For in his trunk he had a pillowcase Which he asserted was Our Lady s veil (General Prologue 700 01). Chaucer gives hints as to the Pardoner s traits that later expand throughout the Pardoner s Tale. Chaucer s portrait of him in the Prologue shows him as deficient in body, depraved in soul, and poor in spirituality. Contrarily, the Pardoner s character is centered on the professional activities in The Pardoner s Tale. Through his tale, the Pardoner tells of a story about three men who spent much of their time gambling, drinking, dancing, and visiting brothels. The three eventually die through trickery and treachery as a result of their own greed. Ironically, the Pardoner emphasizes his own sin through the telling of his tale: greed. He always has his wallet ready on his lap (General Prologue 692) because Brimful of pardons come from Rome (Prologue 693). Chaucer indicates that the Pardoner takes bribes to pardon people thus living a hypocritical life. In The Pardoner s Tale, the Pardoner not only highlights ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Iron Cage By Sociologist Max Weber Have you ever felt trapped within the daily responsibilities and tasks that make up your daily agenda or planner? Have you ever felt as an individual who s not living his or her own life, but rather living by the standards and norms opposed and followed by the members of our modern day society? If your answer is yes to any of the two questions above, then you are experiencing and living what is known today as the Iron Cage . The Iron Cage refers to a very simple, yet complex theory developed by sociologist Max Weber. In his theory which addresses a sociological problem regarding standards of living; Dr. Alana Bibeau further deliberated on how Weber argues, that an individual s life is being transformed not only by the ideas of efficiency, but shaped by the increasing means of rationality and calculability. Though it can be argued by some that the increasing means of efficiency, rationality, and calculability have no impact on the identity and development of a person, I stand strong to the belief that the increasing means of these three factors, contribute to an individual s loss of identity; at the same time these three factors also contribute and shape an individual s life, this of course, going in accordance with what society has been idealized with within the context of Weber s theory of the Iron Cage .
