Description Of A Sign And Understanding
Fun and Responsibility. There is a true difference between reading a sign and understanding; one can articulate words, but without understand it,
this sign board had no meaning. My understanding of the nature of risk and the very personal nature of teaching and learning emanates from my
construction of that memory. Fourteen of my friends, of computer science students of our College, including one of friend's twin sister, drowned
when they ventured into a treacherous sea off the Murud beach ignoring warnings during our excursion. I was one of the six who was rescued by
the fishermen. These kind fishermen also assisted the coast guard in recovering the bodies of the other victims. As my friends were described in
the news. In all we were twenty four students who had gone with our teacher three other staff members of our college in a private bus for the
picnic at Murud, about 44 km from Alibaug town in Raigad district near Mumbai. Now being carried back in ambulance. The day was warm and
muggy; it was the perfect weather to go to the beach. In here it is always sultry in summer or in winter. Murud is a lovely beach that stretches
miles along the blue Arabian Sea. The water was clear and a rich deep blue in color. Not a patch of sea weed in sight. The fine sand burning feet as I
hear the sound of the waves crashing and the cool sea breeze brushing by. We all noticed the warning signboards at the beach, which has been put up
recently, since there have been few drownings

Descriptive Essay About Love
The light shined through the thin hotel blinds to wake up the newly wedded couple on their romantic honeymoon. The beautiful tropical sky was
cloudless with a never ending blue skyline. The turquoise water went on for miles in the horizon. As Mike open the blinds the glistening sun had
blinded him. His beautiful wife laying in their king size been with the covers covering her scandalous body. Her blue eyes slowly opened as she
gazed at Mike. The glimmer in her eyes made it clear that he was her true love. The night before was fulfilled with a passionate intimacy that would
make a dream come true. With Mike staring at the pool filled with little kids he noticed a father and son swimming in the pool. The father was
teaching his son how to swim for the first time. The son was about 6 or 7. Struggling to stay afloat the dad was right by his side making sure he
wouldn't drown. Mike just kept thinking about how amazing that was. To have someone of his own.
"Babe, you ready to go to breakfast?"
His wife said as she brushed her teeth.
"Sure honey" he quickly responded as he came behind her and kissed the top of her head. He put on a bathing suit and a t–shirt so that right after
breakfast he could go to the beach. At breakfast he was amazed with all the options that were available. The delicious foods overloaded his brain and
had no idea what to get. Looking carefully and closely at his options he decided what to get. French Toast. His favorite. As he carefully selected his

Descriptive Essay : My Favorite Place To Folly Beach
I love surfing. My favorite place to surf is on an island called Folly Beach. When I found out that there was a week–long surf camp there I begged my
parents to go. Please, please, I will do anything if you take me." I pleaded. At first, my parents didn't take me seriously. But after talking to them and
showing them the pros to going, they gave in and agreed to make the 12–hour drive. When we got to the hotel we turned on the TV. There was a show
on telling us that a record number of shark attacks had just happened in South Carolina that year. I decided to be precautious while far out in the
ocean. Especially when nobody was near me because that is the most common place to get bitten, killed or attacked by a shark.
My first two days of surf camp were great. I loved being back out in the ocean with the taste of salt water lingering in my mouth. I was learning a
lot and improving my technique. So far so good! The third day of surf camp was canceled due to a tropical storm so my family spent the day at the
beach. On the fourth day, I was ecstatic to be at camp again. The instructors said that I was really getting better and I could go farther out where
bigger waves are. That morning I swam out and got ready to catch a wave coming toward me. As I started paddling I saw a fin swimming just a few
feet from me. I just barely stopped myself from screaming. "Was that a shark?" I thought to myself. Luckily the wave I had been trying to catch came
and I rode it to the shore. I ran

Kayak Tip–Over
"Ahek–Ahek" I coughed, choking on salty water. By the time I could hold onto something, I was swept under the surface of the ocean again. The salt
stung my brown eyes. I tried swimming towards the surface of the ocean, but my legs felt like steel rods. It felt as if I were dreaming and this all was
just a dream. That's when it all came to my mind again.
My family likes to come to Hawaii during winter break, escaping the chilly weather back at home and enjoying the sun here. "Saumya, you should try
to learn something new this year? Like snorkeling, scuba diving or maybe even kayaking?" Dad said, flipping through the pages of the book

I felt the sun scorching my neck as I paddled away from the beach. The sky was bluer than blue topaz, the ocean was warm and wet. The aromatic
ocean air drifted to my nose. I noticed that I seemed to be slower than dad and our instructor. Instantly, I started topaddle faster. I looked at the ocean,
its majestic beauty that seemed to be hidden until I experienced the ocean for myself.
We were an hour into our trip when I started to hear the sound of laughing water. I looked out towards a big wave that dad and little brother battled
through. My heart jumped at the sight of the wave, rolling in towards me. I heard the hissing of waves inching closer to my kayak. I looked towards the
side of my kayak, leaning myself far over the side. My kayak tipped over into the ocean (Crossing the first threshold). The cold water hit me like a
wall. I started to panic as the ocean swallowed me underwater (Calypso's Island). I got to the surface of the water, frantically trying to get hold of
my kayak. Cold waves lapped at my back. The wind roared making me feel very cold. The capsized kayak bobbed up and down like a runner's short
ponytail. Just as I grabbed my kayak another wave rolled in (Poseidon). " Ahh!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. My arms and legs tingled with the
thought of an underwater creature dragging me down into the watery depths. " This is just like T.V.," I think as I anticipated a shark jumping out from
the water and eating me. I got back to the surface

Earthquake : The Seddon Earthquake
In Seddon the aftershocks were a lot fewer but there were still 1,700 and only 45 being over magnitude 4. (see image 2). From the earthquake features
discussed, we can see that despite the Seddon earthquake having a greater magnitude and similar type of fault movement, it was the fact that the
Christchurch earthquake carried a lot more power and force with its initial ground movement and shaking, and its continual aftershocks, that the effects
of this earthquake were much worse than the Seddon earthquake.
In Christchurch, after the earthquake, more than half of the buildings in the central business district, around 10,000, had to be demolished, with a
total of 100,000 homes damaged. Many heritage buildings were also badly damaged and some had to be demolished, with the most recognisable the
Christchurch Cathedral. This damage in Christchurch was especially bad due to the effect of seismic lensing. Seismic lensing is caused during an
earthquake when the p, s and I waves produced by the earthquake bounce of their surroundings. If these surroundings have hard surfaces the waves
will rebound back in a similar direction to where they came from. Whereas if the surfaces properties are softer they can be

My Final Moments As A Chelsea High School Cheerleader
It was my final moments as a Chelsea High School cheerleader. My final banquet had quickly approached. It was then that I realized I was not
ready for the season to be over. I stood in front of my friends, fellow cheerleaders, and their families as they watched and waited for me to recite my
last words as the season came to an end. It took hours for me to write about what my teammates and my coaches meant to me. I did not want to sound
too nostalgic since I'm not the emotional type, but I also did not want to come across as indifferent. It was a difficult task, but I knew I could
accomplish it.
A week before the banquet, the senior cheerleaders received the task of writing speeches about our coaches and our teammates. I am not the ... Show

I was the fifth senior in line to read my speech. Thankfully, this gave me time to relax for the moment. However, as I patiently waited my turn, my
heart started to pound. My heart was beating so rapidly that I was sure the girls next to me could hear it just as vividly as I could.
My parents were there to support me like always, and for that I am thankful. Seeing my parents in the crowd has always been very soothing,
especially in stressful situations such as this. My parents and I have always been outwardly enthusiastic with each other no matter where we are.
Whether at a football game while I cheer on the sidelines or at a banquet where I receive an award, every time they catch my eye, they throw their
hands up in the air and begin to wave frantically until I wave back. There were only two girls left in front of me. One stuttered as she tried to finish
her speech, and the other swayed back and forth unable to keep still. It was at that time that I looked into the crowd and just as I had anticipated, I
spotted my parents. As expected, they waved their arms wildly to catch my attention. I smiled and waved back though my wave was much smaller
than theirs, as I was doing my best not to draw attention to myself. For a moment, I was at ease because of their presence. But just as the girl in front of
me stepped forward to take her place

We went pretty far out compared to everyone else there. We loved the big waves, when thewave crashes right when you hit it. It sometimes worried
me when something hit my leg or foot and I didn 't know what it was, and all it was, was seaweed. We stayed out there for a good two to four
hours, right away I knew that's what I wanted to do the most. We came back inside and dried off and dressed up. We didn't really do much for the
rest of the day. On Tuesday, we we drove out to a couple different gift shops to see if we really needed anything, but because it was only the second
day, we didn't end up buying anything. After that, me and my dad went out to the ocean, again. We had no idea what time it was or when we would
have to go inside to get ready for a pirate dinner and show at 5pm. So after a while, we were walking back and my dad mumbled, "Let's wait for one
more good wave" and I agreed. We went back into the ocean and then we had one great wave, then they just kept coming for a couple of minutes.
We laughed for that whole couple minutes. Then when it died down, we started walking back again and my dad looked behind his shoulder and
pointed out another good wave. So, obviously, we went back out, again! But then we finally actually came back to the hotel. So we went to the
dinner show and we got there very early, we got to our seats, we didn't know exactly where they were but, they were in the front row. I was surprised

I am excited too, but nervous. It is April, the 9th to be specific, so everyone is already acquainted with each other and they also had sixth grade to

randomly looked back to see a car driving slowly on the road as if they were following me. I started to walk faster, and faster, and faster and each time

Difference Between Shallow And Deep Complexity
Abstract In order to understand fault structure, there is a need to first understand fault complexity. Images of faults at depth and near surface reveal
complexities that characterize properties such as geometry, composition and stress states of that fault's structure. While this is true for both passive and
induced imaging, a true passive source image is without the changes in fault structure due to any induced mechanism. This is something to consider
when discussing fault complexity at near surface versus depth, as it is already difficult to distinguish the direction of complexity within a fault
already. Current seismic research has been unable to understand if fault complexity is derived from a point at depth, or expands from surface
complexity into depth. It is critical to understand the relationship between shallow and deep complexity in order to predict where that origin may have
been and what caused its expansion. Passive source imaging has been able to help describe the factors that attribute to this complexity by providing a
way to visually see subsurface data, but has not yet fully answered the complexity question.
Introduction
Fault structure is the aftermath of a slipping event in the lithosphere that produces high velocity compression waves that can be imaged as they travel
through and across the surface of the lithosphere. These waves affect and change, or in other words add complexity to the structure of the lithosphere
within the fault zone. This

Personal Narrative: I Love To Ride On The Crownlining
I love to ride on the Crownline. If you don't know what a Crownline is, it's a type of boat. Our boat looks like a normal, big boat. It is blue and white
but mostly white. There are many types of activities to do on the boat. There are cruising, tubing, skiing, going to a sandbar, going to the cove, and
hanging out with your family. My personal favorite is going to sand bars. I love doing that because you can bury yourself under the sand, make fires,
go on the lilypad (a fun thing to go on that floats on top of the water), swim, and just hang out. Tubing is also really fun. I just like when you are
cruising on the water taking in the amazing waves. Also when you hit a really big wave you fly in the air. If you have a dad like mine you will ... Show

Cruising means just riding around for pleasure. When we do that we just drive down and back on the river. When I sit in the front it is usually
freezing in the fall. But in the summer it's warm. When I sit in the back it is almost never cold. Just sitting in the back of the boat is best to enjoy
the view. To have a good time I'd sit in the front. The cove is a place to just go swimming. But we do have a lillypad. It's not the lilypad you are
thinking of. It's not one of those things that are nasty and green that float around in the water. The lilypad we have floats in the water but, it is big
and long. We can store it on the back of our boat. The only thing bad about the cove is that you need a life jacket because it is super deep and if you
do touch the bottom there is this nasty, black, gooey stuff at the bottom. Have you ever been jet skiing? I have. It is super fun. I do not have my
jet skiing license yet but I am getting it soon. But, I do ride with my mom and my cousins. It is a must do thing. Our jet ski is blue and white but
mostly blue. I love to do donuts and figure 8s. That is the summary of my favorite things to do on the Crownline. So the thing I suggest for you to
do when you boat is going to a sandbar. Have you ever been to a sandbar ever in your life? Have you ever went boating? Those are my favorite things

The Word Ecstasy
When one thinks back to a happy moments of their life, he or she is overcome with a feeling as if they are going to burst. What he felt was ecstasy.
Over time, the word ecstasy has been modified, which can be seen through its etymology. Throughout this paper, ecstasy will be defined, explained,
and compared to the words that we commonly use today. It will clarify the word by exploring its many meanings throughout history. I have chosen this
word because I want to write about a word that displays happiness. I originally chose the word bliss, but I wanted a word that showed more intense
emotion. Ecstasy, an overwhelming feeling of great happiness or joyful excitement. The word ecstasy has been around for quite awhile and has changed

proven to enlighten other people's mood which is a ripple effect in the pool of water we call life. Feeling more happiness, to its greatest extent such
as ecstasy, has the possibility of opening the flood gates of people who are more happy. Therefore more people would have those moments in life when

The Intrinsic Description Of Adequate Boarding
This past weekend I went back to my home town; Jacksonville, Fl, and visited with some of my old friends from high school. Since we all live so
close to the beach we all decided to have a beach day on Saturday. While we were at the beach on Saturday we all decided to rent two paddleboards
and try it out. None of us have ever paddled boarded before this just surfed, but we always see people paddle boarding at the beach so we thought it
was going to be pretty easy. My friend Michelle and I were the first two people that went out to try it and my other friend jo just laughed at us from
the beach. It was a lot harder than what we thought especially in not a calm ocean. We kept getting up then falling down over and over again, but
despite all our efforts it was a very fun experience. I don't think I stood up on the paddle board for more than 2minutes, but it was a great challenge. I

One of the motivators paddle boarding can be described as is Intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the performance of an activity for the
behaviors itself and the feels that result from the activity. People want to go paddle boarding because they want to feel peace, happiness, and a boasted
self–esteem just like how I felt. They want to paddle board because they have experienced that the result of this activity leaves them feeling good.
The second motivation would be Identified motivation. Identified motivation means people participate because they see the value and get
something out of it (skill building or increasing physical fitness). While I was paddle boarding I what kept me getting back up on the board was the
fact that if I kept getting on the board I would improve my skill. As well as myself, people want to keep paddle boarding and getting back up on the
board because they believe that if they continue to not give up not only will their skill improve, but also their physical

The Spectroscopy Lab Centralized On The Properties Of Waves
The spectroscopy lab centralized on the properties of waves and they relate to the emission spectrum, however one must understand the Bohr model of
the atom first. The Bohr model for the atom depicts a planetary like structure, with a positively charged nucleus in the center with small, negatively
charged electrons rotating around in specific, fixed orbits at different distances from the nucleus. When an electron transitions from a higher orbital,
where it is in its excited state, back down to a lower orbital where it is relaxed or in its ground state, it emits light. The emitted light is a result of the
electron releasing the previously absorbed energy. It is possible to observe an electron in one state or another, however an electron never possesses the
capability to be observed in between states. Transitions between states that are closer together, produce a light of lower energy transitions of a longer
distance.
A spectroscope is able to display the emitted light by presenting the bright interference patterns of the diverse wavelengths which make up the
spectrum. By looking through the eyepiece, a spectrum will appear on either side of the slit – the slit starts all of the light waves passing down the tube
"in phase" so that they arrive at the slits in the diffraction grating at the same time. When wavelengths are in phase, they create constructive
interference, which results in double the amplification, while wave lengths that are out of phase produce destructive

YAMBAO, Monn Juleuse F. mjfyambao@gmail.com E304: Kundt's Tube: Velocity of Sound in Solid
METHODOLOGY
Two experiments were done last time due to some circumstances that made the class to lack time and to be late compared to the official class syllabus.
The students were able to accomplished the job by equally dividing the time into two. The first experiment was about Kundt's tube. In this experiment,
longitudinal sound waves will be produced in a metal rod and an air column. Using the properties of wave motion , the frequency of the sound and the
speed of sound in the rod can be determined.
For this experiment setup, following materials are needed such as a Kundt's tube apparatus, a meter stick, a piece of cloth, a thermometer, ... Show more

Therefore, the temperature is directly proportional to the velocity of sound in air. Comparing the velocity of sound in the rod and the velocity of
sound in air, the velocity of sound in the rod is greater than the velocity of sound air since the molecular arrangement of solids are very much
compact that allows the waves to easily travel along the medium. The molecular arrangement of gases is far apart from each other. Because of this, it
makes it hard for the wave to travel the energy from one particle to the other thus allowing the velocity of the sound to move slower.

Length of metal rod, Lr = 91.5 cm
Average length powder segments, La = 10 cm
Temperature of air, t = 26 ВВoC

Identifying Human Hair and Animal Fair by Laser Diffraction
1. Introduction:
1.1 Overview
The ability to identify an animal by examining its fur is a useful one for taxonomists and biologists. The hair of prey is often not digested by a
predator, and so can be found in the predators scat and measured to ascertain its diet (Anwar et al., 2011). An electron microscope can be used to
obtain a lot of data from hair, including its width and the shape and texture of its surface, however electron microscopes are expensive and time
consuming to operate (Sessions et al., 2009). Lasers are much cheaper and can be used to easily measure the width of narrow objects by measuring the
interference pattern created when laser light is diffracted around the object. As a result, laser diffraction may be a more preferable method for identifying
hairs based on their width. This experiment hopes to show that laser diffraction is an accurate enough method for obtaining the width of narrow objects,
such as animal and human hairs, to allow comparison between them.
1.2 Wave interactions
1.2.1 Diffraction:
Diffraction is a physical phenomenon that occurs when waves encounter an obstacle or gap between obstacles. Depending on the wavelength of the
wave and the size of the obstacle or gap waves bend and spread out. Waves tend to diffract more around objects or gaps of a similar size to their
wavelength. How a wave will diffract when it meets an object can be modelled using Huygen's construction. Huygen's construction is based on
Huygen's principle of light

Wave Interactions
Wave Interactions
Wave interactions include reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference. Wave interactions occur when a wave hits something and it either
reflects, refracts, diffracts, or there is an interference. Many different types of waves can be involved in wave interactions including sound, light,
surface, etc.
Reflection occurs when a particular wave, or waves, bounce, or reflect back from an object through which they cannot pass. An echo is a good
example of a reflection wave interaction, but reflection can occur with other types of waves, too. Light waves can be reflected too. A light source,
such as a light bulb or the sun, gives light to an object. That object reflects some of the light, and when the light that has been reflected hits one's eye,
he or she could see the object. When waves hit an object, they reflect back in the same direction. Waves that are reflected have the same speed and
frequency as the original wave, so only their direction is changed. On the other hand, when waves hit an object at an angle, they bounce at the same
degree of angle, but in a different direction (CK–12 Foundation, 2017).
The bending of waves as they pass from one form of matter to another is refraction. When light travels from an object to one's eyes, it makes the
object seem to be in a different location. As waves access a new medium. they travel at a different rate in the alternative medium. For instance, light
waves travel at a lower rate in water than in air. The

Xander Descriptive Writing
Despite the fact that there is usually the typical Southern California weather, it was a chilly night out on the beach in July. I kicked up sand behind
me not caring about anything. I had decided to stay behind after the bonfire we threw for Xander's birthday. My best pal, Jake was the designated
driver this night and had to haul home drunk guys. Instead of hitching a ride, I decided to take a walk by myself along the waves. It was a calming
time for me to collect my thoughts before senior year of high school started. I was doing my best to absorb the atmosphere around me. The sounds of
the tides rising, the waves washing the sand off my feet, and the wind nipping at my red flannel. I was thinking about how I should bring Max ,my dog,

She had the ocean trapped in her eyes, liquid sunshine streaming through her hair, and tan legs as long as the Mississippi river. I don't know what
gave me the courage to approach her that day, but somehow I found myself standing beside the rock she was seated on. I managed to muster a few
words out. "Hey, what's up?" She looked taken aback for a moment, but soon her blue–green eyes lit up and her body relaxed. "Hello. I'm just studying
the moon. Do you want to join me?" she said in a soft voice. I couldn't answer her, my words were caught in my throat as I moved to sit next to her.
I enjoyed her presence as she talked about the craters on the moon. Her voice was light and yet full of sultry. In that moment I began to fall, fast
and hard. I longed for her attention and affection. I wanted to talk to her all the time every day, every second I could get even if I had nothing
important to say. She made me feel complete like the icing on a cake. To me, she was the most beautiful girl and I felt that she could make my plain
world beautiful too. We talked more as the night went on, the stars dancing above our presence. It all went by so fast like we were stuck in our own
little world. It wasn't until she realized it was 2 in the morning and had to

Descriptive Essay About The Sky
Life washes over those who expect it the least. One moment I was playing with the innocence of time, then life came crashing in and destroyed
everything. With water–soaked clothes and tear–streaked cheeks, I returned home with the knowledge that life has no mercy. Life is not fair. Only the
sweet sting of reality to my beaten down ego was my companion.
Magnificent, heavenly light filters through the wispy clouds, signifying a new day. The thin clouds slowly drift apart, presenting a beautiful sky
beneath. Speaking out to me, the sky seems to know every one of my thoughts, my dreams, my darkest fears. The sky is but a canvas of light,
creating a new picture within seconds. Weaving a story through the delicate clouds, the picture grows beyond the expanse of sky. The colors splay
before me, painfully beautiful and simple. Pink hues morph into vibrant purples as they blend with the beautiful blues. The glittering stretch of sea
shines before my eyes. With every new wave, the light from above whispers promises of riches and sparkling diamonds. The light breeze that kisses the
sea sends the twinkling light back into the air above.
The ocean strokes land with calm and reassuring hands, lacing water with sand and lifting seashells in its wake. My heart urges me forward, to walk
among the peace, to capture the sweet smell of sea salt. My brain reasons with the rest of my body. Turning sharply from the churning water I force
my feet to leave the warm imprint they have grown to love

the cool sand. I dug my toes underneath as the remaining sand covered the tip of my feet. I relaxed a little, it felt good to be home. The sound of
my friend calling my name seemed to fade away as the waves roared over the shore, the low tide in activation. I stood there, waiting where the
boardwalk met the sand. The breeze made a sound that comforted me, as it also sent a windy feel to it. I shivered.I tucked a loose strand of my
salt–filled hair behind my ear. "Mackenzie, whaddaya doin'?" Grace called out to me. Grace Davis has been my best friend ever since my dad left

what restaurant to go to, or what to wear to school, we could never agree. I shrugged. I was too involved in the moment to really think about doing
any sort of action. It was eight in the morning. I figured that it would talk me about half an hour from now to be fully energized for the day. It felt
like were the only ones on the beach, the emptiness and despair seemed to fill the air. I felt a chill go down my spine by just thinking about it. Grace

The Ocean Mindfulness
The Ocean.
Earlier last week we posted a (tedtalk) video about mindfulness. About how it can be preventative, and that it is all about familiarising ourselves with
the present moment. To find calmness and clarity in our life, within our thoughts. After watching this, my thoughts somehow drifted to the ocean, and
that evening, I decided to go for a drive to visit the waves and sand at sunset. This left me questioning what it is that draws me to the ocean, as its
quite a common I find myself driven to the waves and the sand and love to look out until I can't quite see where the sea meets the sky – where the
skyline is blurred. And it's not just me ofcourse, many of us are drawn in, many people even move, experience a 'seachange', holidays seem ... Show

For cultural reasons, such as bathing, for relacation and a calm environment; often sacred places are near the water; ceremonies and spiritual
practices, and symbolising rebirth and cleansing are all examples of the human being's attraction to water. And, like mindfulness is described, the
water and ocean seem to give us a sense of calmness and clarity. Wallace Nichols, a marine biologist and author believes we all have a 'blue mind'.
As water is often drawn blue, and we often associate the colour blue to feelings of calmness too. Nichols defines our 'blue mind' as a 'mildly
meditative state characterised by the calm peacefulness, unity and a sense of general happiness and satisfaction with life in the moment' . He
believes our blue mind is activated by being in or near water. Nichols further explains reasons as to how and why water has this effect, I chose one to
explain here and that is that water can induce a meditative state. Surrounded by water our mind is stimulated by what is called 'soft facincation', which
is a kind of effortless type of attention. Researchers and psychologists alike are now starting to understand that this type of attention or stimulo, the
natural kind, of waves or clouds, both visually, phsyically, and auditory, as well as being asthesiaclly pleasing, can have a restorative

Four Types Of Tectonic Waves : Proofing Of An Earthquake
Earthquake Proofing
An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the earth due to the sudden release of energy, causing seismic waves that make the ground shake. This
occurs when two tectonic plates push against each other until the force of friction is overcome releasing the built–up energy and allowing a small
amount of movement of the plates. This movement of the tectonic plates produces the 4 types of seismic waves we feel in earthquakes, P waves, S
waves, Love waves and Rayleigh waves.
P waves (or pressure waves) have a motion similar to sound waves in that the particle of the rock move in the direction of propagation, compressing
and dilating the rock. P waves have the ability to travel through rock, and through liquid such as magma. In an Earthquake, these faster traveling P
waves are the first felt, but often cause little damage other than shaking and bumping windows.
S waves (or secondary waves) are slower moving than p waves, and the particles in the rock move perpendicular to the direction of propagation.
Because of this, S waves are unable to travel through liquid. After the P waves, the S waves with their multi–directional motion shaking the ground
both vertically and horizontally arrive, and it is this motions that causes the greatest damage to structures.
The motion of the Love wave is similar to that of the S wave excluding the vertical displacement. This motion moves the ground from side to side at
right angles to the direction of propagation. This

Descriptive Essay About Surfing
Bethany Hamilton once said, "Surfing for me is more than my lifestyle; it's my passion, my love, and it's part of me." At the age of nine, I had
already mastered the small things in life such as how to ride a bike, tie my shoelaces, and so on, but surfing is the type of thing that just makes one
feel invincible once accomplished. When I was nine years old, I was given the opportunity to surf for the first time in Maui, Hawaii where I
overcame my fear of trying new things. I woke up to the sound of waves crashing onto the beach and a seagull's "Caw! Caw!" For some reason,
being on vacation makes me famished in the morning, so I got up and walked into the kitchen where my dad had already made me some
scrumptious scrambled eggs. I devoured them and then my dad asked, "Do you want to try to surf today?" My dad has always supported me ever
since I was a little girl, and he still does to this day. I knew that he wouldn't mind if I said no, but he most likely wanted me to try surfing since he claims
that I "spend too much time on electronics." "Sure. I guess?" I replied back half reluctantly. I wasn't just slightly reluctant, I was completely reluctant
about not wanting to try surfing. A few months ago, I had tried to go boogie boarding and I had fallen and cut open my entire knee on some jagged
rocks by the beach shore. I had never really tried anything new ever since. My dad and I drove to a surf shop a few blocks down from the place where
we were staying at. We walked in

The television is switched to my brother's favourite show, but he's not in here. "Moo moo, where are you?" No response once again. That's odd?
Things have been a little strange lately. There've been big trucks driving up and down our street. They have no number plates or anything on their car.
I think I've seen them a few times before at our other houses, but before this week, I hadn't seen them here. Mum says for me not to worry about them
as they aren't my problem. But lately when I've asked, her voice wavers and she dismisses the topic.
I head outside to the garden to check for Mum and moo moo. I notice the distinct lack of bird noises and wonder if they're off playing in the trees.

Investigating Singing Wineglasses
From the time I was in the 5th grade I have played the flute in the band. The flute is an instrument that relies entirely on air to create sound. Pitch on
the flute is varied through many factors such as breath support and air speed. The air creates vibrations that travel through the instrument creating
different notes. As a little girl I remember my dad setting out my mom's crystal wine glasses and showing me how to create music with them. It
fascinated me how such a simple household object could create such beautiful tones just like I could with my flute. Therefore, when I was presented

Research Question: Is the frequency emanating from a wineglass proportional to the amount of water in the glass or the diameter of the glass?
The purpose of my experiment is to test three wine glasses of different diameters and measure their frequencies while varying the height of the water
for each glass. My end goal is to hopefully be able to determine whether or not the frequency emitted by the glass is proportionally related to the
diameter of the wine glass, or the amount of water in the wine glass.
Hypothesis:
If I increase the amount of water in the wineglass then it will result in a lower pitch (frequency) regardless of its diameter therefore making pitch
inversely proportional to the amount of water.
I decided upon my hypothesis for the reason that as water is added to the wine glass, it will result in a greater mass. This greater mass should result in
the glass vibrating in larger and further apart waves. The larger and further apart the waves are, the lower the pitch of the sound, making the frequency
proportional to the amount of water.

The Effect Of String Function On An Accidental Of A...
One does not need to use words to convey a message. Dots and lines on a page can convey emotion just as well, if not better. Music can fill in the
context where words cannot. The simple switch between major to minor, an accidental of a natural or a flat can easily show the motion of a piece.
As a cellist for over six years, I wanted to understand the fundamental idea of why notes were audible. I asked myself, why do I press down on certain
parts of the strings on a cello to produce certain notes? How are sound waves calculated? With these two questions in mind, I dove in with the desire to
apply a different perspective of music.
Diagram 1
One of the earliest discoveries of how string function comes from the Greek philosopher, Pythagoras. The wavelength and pinches between strings are
what differentiate the varying notes. As shown in Diagram 1, the wavelengths have specific spacing in between, which are directly related to
mathematics. Nodes, or pinches, are strategically and mathematically placed to resonate precise pitches, and particular ratios are able to be derived
from these intervals. For example, an octave describes two notes that are eight notes apart. In order to create the perfect first octave, the string is
pinched into perfect halves, making the mathematical ratio , as 2 parts are created from the whole with one pinch. By pinching the string in half, the
frequency becomes twice as fast , producing a higher tone of the same note. One octave higher than an A

Elastic Wave Filtering Properties Of Graded Undulated...
We investigate and experimentally demonstrate the elastic wave filtering properties of graded undulated lattices. Square reticulates composed of
curved beams are characterized by graded mechanical properties which result from the spatial modulation of the curvature parameter. Among such
properties, the progressive formation of frequency bandgaps leads to strong wave attenuation over a broad frequency range. The experimental
investigation of wave transmission and the detection of full wavefields effectively illustrate this behavior. Transmission measurements are conducted
using a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer, while a dedicated digital image correlation procedure is implemented to capture in–plane wave motion at
selected frequencies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Device That Can Be Thought As A Gun
device that can be thought as a gun. The second screen has a surface that can record or detect any wave or particle that manages to pass through the
slits and strike the screen. As will be seen, sometime the researcher will open just one slit and other times both slits. The experiment is conducted in
stages in order to contrast waves from particles.
In the first stage a series of bullets (particles) will be fired toward the barrier with one slit open. As expected a vertical pattern of bullet holes will
appear behind slit 1. After opening the second slit and firing another volley, a second vertical pattern will appear right next to the first one. In other
words the bullets behave just like particles in accordance with classical physics as would be expected.
In stage two a monochromatic light (light with just one wavelength) will be emitted toward the screen. This is in contrast to the light from a normal
light bulb that is composed of many differing wavelengths (making it difficult to observe the interference pattern). The second screen is coated with a
chemical that illuminates when impacted by light. When the monochromatic light is emitted with only one slit open, a pattern of brightness appears
just behind the slit. But with both slits open an interference pattern is observed consisting of bright bands where constructive interference occurred and
dark bands where destructive interference occurred. Again, this is just what is expected.

Abstract
Metamaterials have been a subject of increasing interest due to their ability to manipulate the flow of EM waves. We analyse the mechanism by which
metamaterials are able to exhibit this property which is exploited to develop the Harry Potter–esque invisibility cloaks. We briefly discuss the whole
new branch of optics called "Transformation Optics" developed for this purpose, and comment on the extent to which these materials can cloak.
Introduction
Metamaterials are artificially designed materials which have properties that cannot be found in natural materials.[1] They were first theoretically
proposed by Veselago in 1968 as materials having negative permeability and permittivity. This is why these are also known as Left Handed
Materials (LHM) or Negative Refractive Index materials (NIM). The first discovery in this domain was done by Sir Pendry et al in 1996, who
discovered a wire medium with negative permittivity. This was followed by other significant discoveries like negative permeability by Pendry in 1999
and LHM by Sir Smith in 2001.
Metamaterial structures can either be periodic (homogenous) or non–periodic (inhomogenous). Their properties depend on the construction and
arrangement of their constituents. These con– stituents are usually smaller

Is Light a Wave or a Particle?
Is light a wave or a particle? This is a question that has been debated for centuries and still is unproven to be only one or the other. This report is
about explaining Young's Double Slit Experiment, which tried to prove light as a wave, and the results of his experiment. This report is also to inform
and explain the modern physics world, and it will accomplish this by explaining Young's Double Slit Experiment to help understand a small part of the
modern physics world. In the modern physics world there are many phenomena that are unexplainable just like Young's Double Slit Experiment. In
Young's Double Slit Experiment, he wanted to prove whetherlight is a wave or a particle. This might seem to be rather simplistic but, in all reality, it
is anything but simple. A particle, when passed through a vertical slit, will form a vertical line on an object that is on the other side of the slit and
when you add another slit it will form a similar vertical line that is separated by about the same distance as the slits are separated. It will look
something like this: A wave, when passed through a vertical slit, will form spaced lines on the object with the most prominent line, which has the most
intensity, being in line with the center of the slit through which the wave passed and when you add another slit it created an interference pattern from
which the waves collide with each other and either cancel the wave out or create stronger waves depending upon whether or not the wave is

Final Moments As A Cheerleader

  • 1. Description Of A Sign And Understanding Fun and Responsibility. There is a true difference between reading a sign and understanding; one can articulate words, but without understand it, this sign board had no meaning. My understanding of the nature of risk and the very personal nature of teaching and learning emanates from my construction of that memory. Fourteen of my friends, of computer science students of our College, including one of friend's twin sister, drowned when they ventured into a treacherous sea off the Murud beach ignoring warnings during our excursion. I was one of the six who was rescued by the fishermen. These kind fishermen also assisted the coast guard in recovering the bodies of the other victims. As my friends were described in the news. In all we were twenty four students who had gone with our teacher three other staff members of our college in a private bus for the picnic at Murud, about 44 km from Alibaug town in Raigad district near Mumbai. Now being carried back in ambulance. The day was warm and muggy; it was the perfect weather to go to the beach. In here it is always sultry in summer or in winter. Murud is a lovely beach that stretches miles along the blue Arabian Sea. The water was clear and a rich deep blue in color. Not a patch of sea weed in sight. The fine sand burning feet as I hear the sound of the waves crashing and the cool sea breeze brushing by. We all noticed the warning signboards at the beach, which has been put up recently, since there have been few drownings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Descriptive Essay About Love The light shined through the thin hotel blinds to wake up the newly wedded couple on their romantic honeymoon. The beautiful tropical sky was cloudless with a never ending blue skyline. The turquoise water went on for miles in the horizon. As Mike open the blinds the glistening sun had blinded him. His beautiful wife laying in their king size been with the covers covering her scandalous body. Her blue eyes slowly opened as she gazed at Mike. The glimmer in her eyes made it clear that he was her true love. The night before was fulfilled with a passionate intimacy that would make a dream come true. With Mike staring at the pool filled with little kids he noticed a father and son swimming in the pool. The father was teaching his son how to swim for the first time. The son was about 6 or 7. Struggling to stay afloat the dad was right by his side making sure he wouldn't drown. Mike just kept thinking about how amazing that was. To have someone of his own. "Babe, you ready to go to breakfast?" His wife said as she brushed her teeth. "Sure honey" he quickly responded as he came behind her and kissed the top of her head. He put on a bathing suit and a t–shirt so that right after breakfast he could go to the beach. At breakfast he was amazed with all the options that were available. The delicious foods overloaded his brain and had no idea what to get. Looking carefully and closely at his options he decided what to get. French Toast. His favorite. As he carefully selected his ... • 3. Descriptive Essay : My Favorite Place To Folly Beach I love surfing. My favorite place to surf is on an island called Folly Beach. When I found out that there was a week–long surf camp there I begged my parents to go. Please, please, I will do anything if you take me." I pleaded. At first, my parents didn't take me seriously. But after talking to them and showing them the pros to going, they gave in and agreed to make the 12–hour drive. When we got to the hotel we turned on the TV. There was a show on telling us that a record number of shark attacks had just happened in South Carolina that year. I decided to be precautious while far out in the ocean. Especially when nobody was near me because that is the most common place to get bitten, killed or attacked by a shark. My first two days of surf camp were great. I loved being back out in the ocean with the taste of salt water lingering in my mouth. I was learning a lot and improving my technique. So far so good! The third day of surf camp was canceled due to a tropical storm so my family spent the day at the beach. On the fourth day, I was ecstatic to be at camp again. The instructors said that I was really getting better and I could go farther out where bigger waves are. That morning I swam out and got ready to catch a wave coming toward me. As I started paddling I saw a fin swimming just a few feet from me. I just barely stopped myself from screaming. "Was that a shark?" I thought to myself. Luckily the wave I had been trying to catch came and I rode it to the shore. I ran ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Descriptive Essay : ' Adventures Of Maui ' Kayak Tip–Over "Ahek–Ahek" I coughed, choking on salty water. By the time I could hold onto something, I was swept under the surface of the ocean again. The salt stung my brown eyes. I tried swimming towards the surface of the ocean, but my legs felt like steel rods. It felt as if I were dreaming and this all was just a dream. That's when it all came to my mind again. My family likes to come to Hawaii during winter break, escaping the chilly weather back at home and enjoying the sun here. "Saumya, you should try to learn something new this year? Like snorkeling, scuba diving or maybe even kayaking?" Dad said, flipping through the pages of the book Adventures in Maui (Call to Adventure). Snorkeling? No way could I do those activities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I felt the sun scorching my neck as I paddled away from the beach. The sky was bluer than blue topaz, the ocean was warm and wet. The aromatic ocean air drifted to my nose. I noticed that I seemed to be slower than dad and our instructor. Instantly, I started topaddle faster. I looked at the ocean, its majestic beauty that seemed to be hidden until I experienced the ocean for myself. We were an hour into our trip when I started to hear the sound of laughing water. I looked out towards a big wave that dad and little brother battled through. My heart jumped at the sight of the wave, rolling in towards me. I heard the hissing of waves inching closer to my kayak. I looked towards the side of my kayak, leaning myself far over the side. My kayak tipped over into the ocean (Crossing the first threshold). The cold water hit me like a wall. I started to panic as the ocean swallowed me underwater (Calypso's Island). I got to the surface of the water, frantically trying to get hold of my kayak. Cold waves lapped at my back. The wind roared making me feel very cold. The capsized kayak bobbed up and down like a runner's short ponytail. Just as I grabbed my kayak another wave rolled in (Poseidon). " Ahh!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. My arms and legs tingled with the thought of an underwater creature dragging me down into the watery depths. " This is just like T.V.," I think as I anticipated a shark jumping out from the water and eating me. I got back to the surface ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Earthquake : The Seddon Earthquake In Seddon the aftershocks were a lot fewer but there were still 1,700 and only 45 being over magnitude 4. (see image 2). From the earthquake features discussed, we can see that despite the Seddon earthquake having a greater magnitude and similar type of fault movement, it was the fact that the Christchurch earthquake carried a lot more power and force with its initial ground movement and shaking, and its continual aftershocks, that the effects of this earthquake were much worse than the Seddon earthquake. In Christchurch, after the earthquake, more than half of the buildings in the central business district, around 10,000, had to be demolished, with a total of 100,000 homes damaged. Many heritage buildings were also badly damaged and some had to be demolished, with the most recognisable the Christchurch Cathedral. This damage in Christchurch was especially bad due to the effect of seismic lensing. Seismic lensing is caused during an earthquake when the p, s and I waves produced by the earthquake bounce of their surroundings. If these surroundings have hard surfaces the waves will rebound back in a similar direction to where they came from. Whereas if the surfaces properties are softer they can be ... • 6. My Final Moments As A Chelsea High School Cheerleader It was my final moments as a Chelsea High School cheerleader. My final banquet had quickly approached. It was then that I realized I was not ready for the season to be over. I stood in front of my friends, fellow cheerleaders, and their families as they watched and waited for me to recite my last words as the season came to an end. It took hours for me to write about what my teammates and my coaches meant to me. I did not want to sound too nostalgic since I'm not the emotional type, but I also did not want to come across as indifferent. It was a difficult task, but I knew I could accomplish it. A week before the banquet, the senior cheerleaders received the task of writing speeches about our coaches and our teammates. I am not the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was the fifth senior in line to read my speech. Thankfully, this gave me time to relax for the moment. However, as I patiently waited my turn, my heart started to pound. My heart was beating so rapidly that I was sure the girls next to me could hear it just as vividly as I could. My parents were there to support me like always, and for that I am thankful. Seeing my parents in the crowd has always been very soothing, especially in stressful situations such as this. My parents and I have always been outwardly enthusiastic with each other no matter where we are. Whether at a football game while I cheer on the sidelines or at a banquet where I receive an award, every time they catch my eye, they throw their hands up in the air and begin to wave frantically until I wave back. There were only two girls left in front of me. One stuttered as she tried to finish her speech, and the other swayed back and forth unable to keep still. It was at that time that I looked into the crowd and just as I had anticipated, I spotted my parents. As expected, they waved their arms wildly to catch my attention. I smiled and waved back though my wave was much smaller than theirs, as I was doing my best not to draw attention to myself. For a moment, I was at ease because of their presence. But just as the girl in front of me stepped forward to take her place ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I answered anxiously. "Do you wanna take a guess?" he questioned. "Uh,"I replied, "Arizona?" "Nope." "Then where?" "Myrtle Beach!" Months later, we arrived at the airport at around 11:30am on Sunday, and our flight was supposed to take off at 2pm. But we were told that there was a fifteen minute delay and we weren 't too bothered. Fifteen minutes later, they pushed the flight back an hour because there was a malfunction with the engine. We went pretty far out compared to everyone else there. We loved the big waves, when thewave crashes right when you hit it. It sometimes worried me when something hit my leg or foot and I didn 't know what it was, and all it was, was seaweed. We stayed out there for a good two to four hours, right away I knew that's what I wanted to do the most. We came back inside and dried off and dressed up. We didn't really do much for the rest of the day. On Tuesday, we we drove out to a couple different gift shops to see if we really needed anything, but because it was only the second day, we didn't end up buying anything. After that, me and my dad went out to the ocean, again. We had no idea what time it was or when we would have to go inside to get ready for a pirate dinner and show at 5pm. So after a while, we were walking back and my dad mumbled, "Let's wait for one more good wave" and I agreed. We went back into the ocean and then we had one great wave, then they just kept coming for a couple of minutes. We laughed for that whole couple minutes. Then when it died down, we started walking back again and my dad looked behind his shoulder and pointed out another good wave. So, obviously, we went back out, again! But then we finally actually came back to the hotel. So we went to the dinner show and we got there very early, we got to our seats, we didn't know exactly where they were but, they were in the front row. I was surprised but at the same time, I was ... I want to curl up in a ball and go to sleep. All I have with me are the clothes I'm wearing and my pink, teddy bear laylee. All of the sudden my body jerks. I look both ways for my mommy and daddy. I panic when I realize that I can't find them. All I do is sit there, hugging my knees and rocking back and forth. Then something jerks my body even more and in two seconds I go from seeing land not so far away to pure darkness. I'm wet all over and I see bodies that I hope are alive. All around me are loose items like clothes, baskets, headscarves, and ripped pieces of the boat. I see laylee out of the corner of my eye and grab her. As soon as I grab her, two hands wrap... It is April, the 9th to be specific, so everyone is already acquainted with each other and they also had sixth grade to get to know each other. On the plus side I get summer vacation in two months and my birthday is April 15th. I went through the day seeming on edge with excitement and nervousness at the same time, though I have no clue why. While walked along the sidewalk with a tiny skip in my step, I randomly looked back to see a car driving slowly on the road as if they were following me. I started to walk faster, and faster, and faster and each time the car speed up a little to keep pace with me. Eventually I broke out into a full out run. I didn't even look back to see if they were still following me I ran up my driveway, into my house and slammed the door behind me. "What was that?" my mom yelled from across the house with question in her voice. "I think I am being stalked," I say when I walk into her office. "Why do you say that?" she asked. "A car was following me my whole way home." I reply with a weird sense of calm in my tone. "Do you want me to call the police?" "No, I don't remember anything of what the car or people looked like no use in calling." I say. "Okay" she says sounding uneasy. Besides being stalked, my day was good, until dinner. "How was every ones day," my dad asks to no one in particular. "We did a dra –" my sister starts to say before she is cut off by a "Knock, Knock,Knock." at the door. "Are we expecting anyone?" I question. "I don't think so," my dad says while he goes to answer the door. I follow him. He reaches for the doorknob and twists. He opens the door with ease. Outside standing on our patio are a couple that look like they are about fourty. The man is holding a stack of papers. The women is holding a child. "We are here for our daughter." the woman says. "What?!" my dad answers very confused. "We had a daughter named Lily Rose. We lost her while fleeing from Syria." "What is she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Difference Between Shallow And Deep Complexity Abstract In order to understand fault structure, there is a need to first understand fault complexity. Images of faults at depth and near surface reveal complexities that characterize properties such as geometry, composition and stress states of that fault's structure. While this is true for both passive and induced imaging, a true passive source image is without the changes in fault structure due to any induced mechanism. This is something to consider when discussing fault complexity at near surface versus depth, as it is already difficult to distinguish the direction of complexity within a fault already. Current seismic research has been unable to understand if fault complexity is derived from a point at depth, or expands from surface complexity into depth. It is critical to understand the relationship between shallow and deep complexity in order to predict where that origin may have been and what caused its expansion. Passive source imaging has been able to help describe the factors that attribute to this complexity by providing a way to visually see subsurface data, but has not yet fully answered the complexity question. Introduction Fault structure is the aftermath of a slipping event in the lithosphere that produces high velocity compression waves that can be imaged as they travel through and across the surface of the lithosphere. These waves affect and change, or in other words add complexity to the structure of the lithosphere within the fault zone. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is blue and white but mostly white. There are many types of activities to do on the boat. There are cruising, tubing, skiing, going to a sandbar, going to the cove, and hanging out with your family. My personal favorite is going to sand bars. I love doing that because you can bury yourself under the sand, make fires, go on the lilypad (a fun thing to go on that floats on top of the water), swim, and just hang out. Tubing is also really fun. I just like when you are cruising on the water taking in the amazing waves. Also when you hit a really big wave you fly in the air. If you have a dad like mine you will ... Just sitting in the back of the boat is best to enjoy the view. To have a good time I'd sit in the front. The cove is a place to just go swimming. But we do have a lillypad. It's not the lilypad you are thinking of. It's not one of those things that are nasty and green that float around in the water. The lilypad we have floats in the water but, it is big and long. We can store it on the back of our boat. The only thing bad about the cove is that you need a life jacket because it is super deep and if you do touch the bottom there is this nasty, black, gooey stuff at the bottom. Have you ever been jet skiing? I have. It is super fun. I do not have my jet skiing license yet but I am getting it soon. But, I do ride with my mom and my cousins. It is a must do thing. Over time, the word ecstasy has been modified, which can be seen through its etymology. Throughout this paper, ecstasy will be defined, explained, and compared to the words that we commonly use today. It will clarify the word by exploring its many meanings throughout history. I have chosen this word because I want to write about a word that displays happiness. I originally chose the word bliss, but I wanted a word that showed more intense emotion. Since we all live so close to the beach we all decided to have a beach day on Saturday. While we were at the beach on Saturday we all decided to rent two paddleboards and try it out. None of us have ever paddled boarded before this just surfed, but we always see people paddle boarding at the beach so we thought it was going to be pretty easy. My friend Michelle and I were the first two people that went out to try it and my other friend jo just laughed at us from the beach. It was a lot harder than what we thought especially in not a calm ocean. We kept getting up then falling down over and over again, but despite all our efforts it was a very fun experience. They want to paddle board because they have experienced that the result of this activity leaves them feeling good. The second motivation would be Identified motivation. • 14. The Spectroscopy Lab Centralized On The Properties Of Waves The spectroscopy lab centralized on the properties of waves and they relate to the emission spectrum, however one must understand the Bohr model of the atom first. The Bohr model for the atom depicts a planetary like structure, with a positively charged nucleus in the center with small, negatively charged electrons rotating around in specific, fixed orbits at different distances from the nucleus. When an electron transitions from a higher orbital, where it is in its excited state, back down to a lower orbital where it is relaxed or in its ground state, it emits light. The emitted light is a result of the electron releasing the previously absorbed energy. It is possible to observe an electron in one state or another, however an electron never possesses the capability to be observed in between states. Transitions between states that are closer together, produce a light of lower energy transitions of a longer distance. A spectroscope is able to display the emitted light by presenting the bright interference patterns of the diverse wavelengths which make up the spectrum. By looking through the eyepiece, a spectrum will appear on either side of the slit – the slit starts all of the light waves passing down the tube "in phase" so that they arrive at the slits in the diffraction grating at the same time. When wavelengths are in phase, they create constructive interference, which results in double the amplification, while wave lengths that are out of phase produce destructive ... Therefore, the temperature is directly proportional to the velocity of sound in air. Comparing the velocity of sound in the rod and the velocity of sound in air, the velocity of sound in the rod is greater than the velocity of sound air since the molecular arrangement of solids are very much compact that allows the waves to easily travel along the medium. The molecular arrangement of gases is far apart from each other. Because of this, it makes it hard for the wave to travel the energy from one particle to the other thus allowing the velocity of the sound to move slower. • 17. Identifying Human Hair and Animal Fair by Laser Diffraction 1. Introduction: 1.1 Overview The ability to identify an animal by examining its fur is a useful one for taxonomists and biologists. The hair of prey is often not digested by a predator, and so can be found in the predators scat and measured to ascertain its diet (Anwar et al., 2011). An electron microscope can be used to obtain a lot of data from hair, including its width and the shape and texture of its surface, however electron microscopes are expensive and time consuming to operate (Sessions et al., 2009). Lasers are much cheaper and can be used to easily measure the width of narrow objects by measuring the interference pattern created when laser light is diffracted around the object. As a result, laser diffraction may be a more preferable method for identifying hairs based on their width. This experiment hopes to show that laser diffraction is an accurate enough method for obtaining the width of narrow objects, such as animal and human hairs, to allow comparison between them. 1.2 Wave interactions 1.2.1 Diffraction: Diffraction is a physical phenomenon that occurs when waves encounter an obstacle or gap between obstacles. Depending on the wavelength of the wave and the size of the obstacle or gap waves bend and spread out. Waves tend to diffract more around objects or gaps of a similar size to their wavelength. • 18. Wave Interactions Wave Interactions Wave interactions include reflection, refraction, diffraction, and interference. Wave interactions occur when a wave hits something and it either reflects, refracts, diffracts, or there is an interference. Many different types of waves can be involved in wave interactions including sound, light, surface, etc. Reflection occurs when a particular wave, or waves, bounce, or reflect back from an object through which they cannot pass. An echo is a good example of a reflection wave interaction, but reflection can occur with other types of waves, too. Light waves can be reflected too. A light source, such as a light bulb or the sun, gives light to an object. That object reflects some of the light, and when the light that has been reflected hits one's eye, he or she could see the object. When waves hit an object, they reflect back in the same direction. Waves that are reflected have the same speed and frequency as the original wave, so only their direction is changed. On the other hand, when waves hit an object at an angle, they bounce at the same degree of angle, but in a different direction (CK–12 Foundation, 2017). The bending of waves as they pass from one form of matter to another is refraction. When light travels from an object to one's eyes, it makes the object seem to be in a different location. As waves access a new medium. they travel at a different rate in the alternative medium. For instance, light waves travel at a lower rate in water than in air. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Four Types Of Tectonic Waves : Proofing Of An Earthquake Earthquake Proofing An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the earth due to the sudden release of energy, causing seismic waves that make the ground shake. This occurs when two tectonic plates push against each other until the force of friction is overcome releasing the built–up energy and allowing a small amount of movement of the plates. This movement of the tectonic plates produces the 4 types of seismic waves we feel in earthquakes, P waves, S waves, Love waves and Rayleigh waves. P waves (or pressure waves) have a motion similar to sound waves in that the particle of the rock move in the direction of propagation, compressing and dilating the rock. P waves have the ability to travel through rock, and through liquid such as magma. In an Earthquake, these faster traveling P waves are the first felt, but often cause little damage other than shaking and bumping windows. S waves (or secondary waves) are slower moving than p waves, and the particles in the rock move perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Because of this, S waves are unable to travel through liquid. After the P waves, the S waves with their multi–directional motion shaking the ground both vertically and horizontally arrive, and it is this motions that causes the greatest damage to structures. The motion of the Love wave is similar to that of the S wave excluding the vertical displacement. This motion moves the ground from side to side at right angles to the direction of propagation. But lately when I've asked, her voice wavers and she dismisses the topic. I head outside to the garden to check for Mum and moo moo. I notice the distinct lack of bird noises and wonder if they're off playing in the trees. Surely enough, one hops in front of my feet and I follow it along the path until I finally see my mother and brother. There's a strange man with her, I've never seen him before. He comes towards me and throws me me to the ground with my brother. "You know the law. One child only. Who goes?" My heart palpitates and tears grow in my eyes as the man pulls out the gun. He points it at me, then at my brother, switching between the two of us.

"Here they come!," I heard someone scream. I don't know about this. I kept on thinking to myself. I just don't know! "Um. Are you so sure about this?," I asked Kate, my softball teammate. My voice was crackling like a fire pit. "Of course! It's so fun! I love the wave pool!" she replied. I turned around and looked at Jenna, another one of my teammates. "Don't worry. You don't have to go if you don't want to," she said. Her voice calm. Like the water, I didn't want to go in. Before I could reply, Kate dragged me in. Oh boy! This wave pool is going to be wild! I thought to myself. Around 5 minutes later, I chilled out. I was talking with Libby and Ashley. They are two more of my teammates. Suddenly, I heard a siren. • 34. Sample Resume : Singing Wineglasses Krystina Waters IB Physics 12 Mr. Chidley 27 Jan 2017 itsthelaw! Investigating Singing Wineglasses From the time I was in the 5th grade I have played the flute in the band. The flute is an instrument that relies entirely on air to create sound. Pitch on the flute is varied through many factors such as breath support and air speed. The air creates vibrations that travel through the instrument creating different notes. As a little girl I remember my dad setting out my mom's crystal wine glasses and showing me how to create music with them. It fascinated me how such a simple household object could create such beautiful tones just like I could with my flute. Therefore, when I was presented with the internal assessment for my IB physics class, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Research Question: Is the frequency emanating from a wineglass proportional to the amount of water in the glass or the diameter of the glass? The purpose of my experiment is to test three wine glasses of different diameters and measure their frequencies while varying the height of the water for each glass. My end goal is to hopefully be able to determine whether or not the frequency emitted by the glass is proportionally related to the diameter of the wine glass, or the amount of water in the wine glass. Hypothesis: If I increase the amount of water in the wineglass then it will result in a lower pitch (frequency) regardless of its diameter therefore making pitch inversely proportional to the amount of water. I decided upon my hypothesis for the reason that as water is added to the wine glass, it will result in a greater mass. This greater mass should result in the glass vibrating in larger and further apart waves. The larger and further apart the waves are, the lower the pitch of the sound, making the frequency proportional to the amount of water. Variables list: Independent variable– Amount of water (depth) and diameter. Dependent variables– Pitch/frequency Controlled variables – The temperature of the water, Spectrum View App, finger used Controlling the Variables:

  • 36. The Effect Of String Function On An Accidental Of A... One does not need to use words to convey a message. Dots and lines on a page can convey emotion just as well, if not better. Music can fill in the context where words cannot. The simple switch between major to minor, an accidental of a natural or a flat can easily show the motion of a piece. As a cellist for over six years, I wanted to understand the fundamental idea of why notes were audible. I asked myself, why do I press down on certain parts of the strings on a cello to produce certain notes? How are sound waves calculated? With these two questions in mind, I dove in with the desire to apply a different perspective of music. Diagram 1 One of the earliest discoveries of how string function comes from the Greek philosopher, Pythagoras. The wavelength and pinches between strings are what differentiate the varying notes. As shown in Diagram 1, the wavelengths have specific spacing in between, which are directly related to mathematics. Nodes, or pinches, are strategically and mathematically placed to resonate precise pitches, and particular ratios are able to be derived from these intervals. For example, an octave describes two notes that are eight notes apart. In order to create the perfect first octave, the string is pinched into perfect halves, making the mathematical ratio , as 2 parts are created from the whole with one pinch. By pinching the string in half, the frequency becomes twice as fast , producing a higher tone of the same note. One octave higher than an A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. A Story Of A Short Story Signs Meril held up a linen napkin. "Chartreuse?" she said, waving it in front of Harriet's face. "Huh? That's what chartreuse looks like?" She pushed a lock of long red hair behind her ear. "No, thanks." She looked back at the lake. Meril's sigh was long. "Hair, you have to make these decisions. Your wedding is in five weeks." With a quick turn of her wrist, Harriet waved her best friend away. "This is just cold feet. It's natural. Everyone gets a little . . . unsure before the big day." Meril added the chartreuse napkin to the stack on the table. "I tell you what, I'm gonna be the best darn maid of honour you ever did see. I'll make these decisions; you relax, and then thank me later when it's all over–like, thank me big . . . with a trip or something, okay?" "Did you say something?" Harriet forced her gaze to switch from the water to her best friend, Meril. God, she admired Meril, had since the day they met in ninth grade. Meril with her pixie–cut hairstyle, her darling dimples, her white, almost straight teeth. It was impossible to look at her and not smile. She was like a real–life fairy. Harriet, who was red all over from her hair to her freckles to her easily burned toes, needed a fairy to bring a different colour to her life. • 38. Elastic Wave Filtering Properties Of Graded Undulated... We investigate and experimentally demonstrate the elastic wave filtering properties of graded undulated lattices. Square reticulates composed of curved beams are characterized by graded mechanical properties which result from the spatial modulation of the curvature parameter. Among such properties, the progressive formation of frequency bandgaps leads to strong wave attenuation over a broad frequency range. The experimental investigation of wave transmission and the detection of full wavefields effectively illustrate this behavior. Transmission measurements are conducted using a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer, while a dedicated digital image correlation procedure is implemented to capture in–plane wave motion at selected frequencies. ... Although it was theoretically shown that structural metamaterials provide a disparate landscape of wave propagation properties, experimental validation is scarcely documented, with most of the tests performed to obtain transmissibility measures through a small number of sensors. When a full wavefield measurement is required, 3D scanning laser Doppler vibrometry (SLDV) is commonly used to measure the wave velocity field in predefined lattice locations. • 39. Device That Can Be Thought As A Gun device that can be thought as a gun. The second screen has a surface that can record or detect any wave or particle that manages to pass through the slits and strike the screen. As will be seen, sometime the researcher will open just one slit and other times both slits. The experiment is conducted in stages in order to contrast waves from particles. In the first stage a series of bullets (particles) will be fired toward the barrier with one slit open. As expected a vertical pattern of bullet holes will appear behind slit 1. After opening the second slit and firing another volley, a second vertical pattern will appear right next to the first one. In other words the bullets behave just like particles in accordance with classical physics as would be expected. In stage two a monochromatic light (light with just one wavelength) will be emitted toward the screen. This is in contrast to the light from a normal light bulb that is composed of many differing wavelengths (making it difficult to observe the interference pattern). The second screen is coated with a chemical that illuminates when impacted by light. When the monochromatic light is emitted with only one slit open, a pattern of brightness appears just behind the slit. But with both slits open an interference pattern is observed consisting of bright bands where constructive interference occurred and dark bands where destructive interference occurred. Again, this is just what is expected. In the third stage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I thought to myself, school doesn't start for another two and a half hours. I suddenly remembered it's one of the most exciting days that I will experience. Both my parents were sleeping. I turned off my alarm and got out of my warm bed. Immediately I put on swimming shorts with no shirt, to top it off a flat brim hat sitting backwards on my head. I walked into the hallway making sure not to wake anyone. I creeped down the stairs and walked into my kitchen. I saw a note on top of my wetsuit that read "I washed and dried it, I will call the school and say you have an appointment, have fun and don't get hurt, love mom." Once I finished reading the note my best friend Riley walked into my house. "Bro were wasting daylight. We have to be at Ryans at six." I looked at him for a second. He was wearing flops, palm tree swimming shorts a cut off and a beanie with the monster symbol printed on the front. "Mornin there bud" I said back to him. E & C Department, Indian Institute Of Technology Roorkee Metamaterial Cloaking Soumay Gupta1andTanvi Sharma1 1411606714116070 1 E&C Department, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee Abstract Metamaterials have been a subject of increasing interest due to their ability to manipulate the flow of EM waves. We analyse the mechanism by which metamaterials are able to exhibit this property which is exploited to develop the Harry Potter–esque invisibility cloaks. We briefly discuss the whole new branch of optics called "Transformation Optics" developed for this purpose, and comment on the extent to which these materials can cloak. Introduction Metamaterials are artificially designed materials which have properties that cannot be found in natural materials.[1] They were first theoretically proposed by Veselago in 1968 as materials having negative permeability and permittivity. This is why these are also known as Left Handed Materials (LHM) or Negative Refractive Index materials (NIM). The first discovery in this domain was done by Sir Pendry et al in 1996, who discovered a wire medium with negative permittivity. This was followed by other significant discoveries like negative permeability by Pendry in 1999 and LHM by Sir Smith in 2001. Metamaterial structures can either be periodic (homogenous) or non–periodic (inhomogenous). Their properties depend on the construction and arrangement of their constituents. • 44. Is Light a Wave or a Particle? Is light a wave or a particle? This is a question that has been debated for centuries and still is unproven to be only one or the other. This report is about explaining Young's Double Slit Experiment, which tried to prove light as a wave, and the results of his experiment. This report is also to inform and explain the modern physics world, and it will accomplish this by explaining Young's Double Slit Experiment to help understand a small part of the modern physics world. In the modern physics world there are many phenomena that are unexplainable just like Young's Double Slit Experiment. In Young's Double Slit Experiment, he wanted to prove whetherlight is a wave or a particle. This might seem to be rather simplistic but, in all reality, it is anything but simple. A particle, when passed through a vertical slit, will form a vertical line on an object that is on the other side of the slit and when you add another slit it will form a similar vertical line that is separated by about the same distance as the slits are separated. It will look something like this: A wave, when passed through a vertical slit, will form spaced lines on the object with the most prominent line, which has the most intensity, being in line with the center of the slit through which the wave passed and when you add another slit it created an interference pattern from which the waves collide with each other and either cancel the wave out or create stronger waves depending upon whether or not the wave is ...
