Analysis Of The Battle Of Shiloh
For my battle analysis assignment, I have chosen to examine the battle of Shiloh. This battle began
April 6 – 7 1862, in the Pittsburg Landing area of Tennessee. In Hebrew Shiloh, means "peace"
nonetheless, this battlefield was far from a place of peace from April 6–7 1862. This battle was the
bloodiest civil war battle to date and occurred between the Union and Confederate armies. Having
analyzed the battle from multiple sources, I have discovered a number of operational, tactical, and
logistical mistakes that contributed to the Confederate losses suffered. My sources include
documentaries, historical videos, books, and articles from historians and civil war experts who have
spent their lives studying and dissecting the civil war, its battles, commanders, and tactics. As part of
my analysis, I will highlight the Confederate mistakes that could have produced a different outcome
of this historical battle.
In setting the stage for the battle of Shiloh let us first briefly discuss the civil war. The civil war
began with its first battle on 12 April, 1861 at Fort Sumter, South Carolina to the last battle at
Anderson, South Carolina on May 1, 1865 (Civil War Trust , 2014 ) between the Union and
Confederate Armies. The civil war consisted of nearly 50 major battles; the battle of Shiloh was the
first scandalous and essentially paramount battle. (Civil War Battles, 2016) The armies of the north
were fighting to reunite the nation, while the armies of the south were fighting

Summary Of The Book 'Shiloh'
In the book, "Shiloh", the boy Marty learns a good lesson from a dog that he found and became
attached to. He found out it was Judd Travers dog and he abuses his animals. Although Marty did
find out that the dog belonged to Judd Travers. Marty decided to keep the dog which is breaking the
law. Marty figured that doing something just is better than doing it by the law because he knew that
Judd would hurt the dog more if he had given him back. Marty found that doing something wrong
for the greater good was better than just giving that poor dog a ride back to abusement. Marty also
had troubles while keeping the dog. He had to lie to his whole family which Marty knew wasn't
right. Then again he had to lie to everyone just to keep the dog from

History of the Battle of Shiloh
Introduction The Battle of Shiloh is historically known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil
War. Part of the Western Campaign, Shiloh came on the heels of Union victories at Fort Henry and
Fort Donelson, primarily as a Confederate attempt to halt the Union's advance into the deep South.
Though causes of the Union victory at Shiloh may be disputed, the significance of this Battle to the
War's outcome is undeniable. Analysis When, Where and Why the Battle of Shiloh Took Place The
Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6–7, 1862 (Daniel, 1997, p. 319) in southern Tennessee's Hardin
County, particularly at Pittsburg Landing (Groom, 2012, p. 41). The short answer to why this Battle
took place is that the Confederacy wanted to stop the Union's advance far into Tennessee and
eventually into Mississippi by a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grant's "Army of the Tennessee"
before Union Major General Don Carlos Buell's "Army of the Ohio" could arrive and join Grant's
forces (Groom, 2012, p. 141). The long answer to why this Battle took place can be found in the two
prior Confederate losses at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February, 1862, and the consequences
of those losses. The captures of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson were the first two Union victories
since the beginning of the War on April 12, 1861 (Woodworth, 2011, p. 89). The Union capture of
Fort Henry in western Tennessee on February 6, 1862 allowed Union forces to move 12 miles east
overland to Fort Donelson

Battle Of Shiloh
The three probably most important battles of the Civil War were great victories, but came at a price.
The Confederate army surrendered at the battle of Vicksburg on July 4th 1863. They were sad and
ashamed after prolonged violent attacks. This was the end of one of the most brilliant military
campaigns of the war. The sad loss of Pemberton's army and the stronghold in Vicksburg on the
mighty Mississippi River was very effective in splitting the Confederacy in half.
Grants skilled and well planned military success in the West boosted his proud reputation, leading
ultimately to his appointment as the new and better General – In – Chief of the Union. When Grant's
army captured the mighty Mississippi we were able to cut the supply lines, ... Show more content on

General Grant and his army of forty–two thousand men had camped along the river. The
Confederates second stupid leader, General Albert Sidney Johnston said, "I would fight him if he
were a million." The poorly prepared rebels were on the march and without food for twenty–four
hours. The tired and hungry Confederate Army was still able to catch Grant's army by surprise.
Eight of ten union soldiers at Shiloh had never fought before. At the end of the Battle of Shiloh
twenty–four thousand men were dead, wounded, or captured. On April 25, 1862 Union forces under
David Farragut captured New Orleans, Louisiana the largest city in the South. Farragut, who was of
Spanish descent grew up in the South but remained loyal to the North. The capture of New Orleans
was the key to getting the mighty and powerful Mississippi River. The North was able to cut the
supply lines, cut the water highway travel down, and cut states away from the country.
The capture of mighty and powerful Mississippi River was the result of three of the battles of the
Civil War. The Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of New Orleans, and the Battle of Shiloh. These three
battles were important to the success of the Union Army without them we probably would not have
won the war. The battles are very interesting, complex, and cruel but wars are wars and a lot of

Shiloh And Trifles
In the midst of a tragedy, a person's morals and ethics can be put to the test. Under certain stressors,
a person can make decisions that drastically change the outcome of their situation. This is shown
comparatively in the readings Trifles by Susan Glaspell and Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Manson. Both
readings contain societies with stereotypical gender roles that impact the ethics of the women and
men in the stories while also making the characters questions their own morals.
In Trifles, the women uncover the dirty truth hidden away in the Wright's house. As they do this the
women become sensitive to Mrs. Wright who is the murderer in the story. Both Mrs. Hale and Mrs.
Peters humanize Mrs. Wright instead of just looking at her like a criminal. ... Show more content on

The women in Trifles, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, are left to hide the evidence of the murders from
the authorities and their husbands. This causes their husbands to dismiss their wives' opinions as
they normally do which solidifies their morals. While the women in this story are debating their
morals because they feel bad for Mrs. Wright rather than the dead man.
In the case of Leroy and Norma Jean from Shiloh, their morals are tested when they examine their
marriage before and after the tragic death of their infant son, Randy. Their community is growing
rapidly which is something Leroy never noticed until he had no choice but to notice. These modern
changes cause Leroy to cling to his traditional morals which cause him to attempt to fix his
traditional marriage. Norma Jean's mother, Mabel, causes tension when she also wants Norma Jean
and Leroy to mend their crumbling marriage because she believes that is ethically correct to stay

Military Leadership : No Control Group Exists
Military leadership is forever difficult to umpire as no control group exists. One may see the verdict
of hindsight view passive strategy unfavorably, like General George McClellan who built the Union
army in the early stages of the war but was a lethargic and fearful field commander who seemed
incapable of gathering the courage to assertively take on Confederate General Robert E. Lee, an
American soldier best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia; others
are indicted on being too reckless. Shelby Foote, an American historian and novelist, describes the
massacre on Gettysburg by Major General George Pickett, proclaiming, "And that was the mistake
he made, the mistake of all mistakes....and there was scarcely a ... Show more content on

In February of 1862, Ulysses S. Grant took control of all union forces following his impressive
governance over the reinforced Confederates under Brigadier General Gideon J. Pillow at the battle
of Fort Donelson (Grant 149). Ultimately, he developed a grand strategy to defeat the Confederacy
and in the end, with much resistance, succeeded. Grant began to greatly take advantage of the
Northern upper hand in resources, transforming the war into a bloody but efficient battle of attrition.
He in this manner revived the Northern war exertion and saw it through to its finish, with General
Robert Lee surrendering on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in Appomattox, Virginia (329). The
battle of Shiloh (April 6–7, 1862), the Civil War's first catastrophically bloody battle, serves as an
illustration of Grant's military prowess. The implementation of sound tactics with the advantages
provided to him explicitly in Shiloh and throughout the American Civil War, along with his sincere
concern and belief in his troops, result in victory here and in the conflict altogether.
Following defeats at Fort Henry and Donelson, Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston,
commander of the western armies within the Western Department, withdrew to Corinth, Mississippi
in order to start preparing for an offensive maneuver against Grant (150). He was eager to catch
Grant before the Army of the Ohio under Major

Analysis Of The Battle Of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6ththrough the 7th in 1862 in the southwestern Tennessee
region. The Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the confederate forces in
the Western Theater wanted to defeat the Union Major General Grant's army before it could be
reinforced by Major General Don Carlos Buell's Army of Ohio which was marching from Nashville.
Confederate General Johnston ordered a surprise attack on Grant's encampment which was located
close to Shiloh Church. Johnston's troops caught Grant's men by surprise and deftly drove the Union
soldiers back toward their defensive perimeter on the heights above Pittsburg Landing on the
Tennessee River. However, unfortunately for the Confederacy, Johnston was critically

April 12–April 14, 1861 The war for the States Rights has begun on this day. The war started when
the Confederates bombarded Fort Sumter. Edmund Ruffin, of the Confederates, fired one of the first
shots upon us and he has begun the war. My name is Jeremy Smith and I am fighting for the Union
Army. Before the States Rights war, I was a slave and plantation owner. I also had a house, nice
farm, a big field full of wheat and corn, and a family, but that was before I enrolled to fight for the
Union Army. The battle of Fort Sumter started when the Confederates bombarded the fort. We tried

The retreat was pretty organized up until the Bull Run crossings, yet it was poorly instructed by the
Union officers. A Union wagon was turned over by Confederate artillery shells on a bridge across
Cub Run Creek and started a panic among McDowell's forces. We fought the best we could and with
all we had, yet we still didn't win. Jeremy Smith April 6, 1862 On this day the Battle of Shiloh has

patrol group searching for the Confederate's main camp. A little while later, we came across a group
of Confederates in the forest. I think they were searching for us, yet we won the engagement. Then
we came across some Confederate outposts. We also won that engagement, as well. Then the general
told me to go back and help the main lines. On my way back the Union must have been pretty
shaken from when the patrols were firing at the Confederates in the forest because when I was
running back to join them, they were firing at me until I told them I was a Union soldier. They asked
me some questions to make sure I was a Union soldier and not a Confederate spy. Then they told me

Shiloh After Shiloh the South would never smile again. Known originally as the Battle of Pittsburg
Landing, The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle fought in North America up to that time.
Pittsburg Landing was an area from where the Yankees planned to attack the Confederates who had
moved from Fort Donelson to Corinth, Mississippi. The North was commanded by General Ulysses
S. Grant and the South by General Albert Sydney Johnston.
The Union army was taken by surprise the first day when the Confederate Army unexpectedly
attacked, but after Union reinforcements arrived the fighting virtually ended in a tie. Lasting for two
days, April 6 and 7 of 1862, casualties for both sides exceeded 20,000. The Battle of Shiloh was a ...

Prentiss fought, as he states, until "half–past five P.M., when finding that further resistance must
result in the slaughter of every man in the command, I (2)had to yeild the fight. The enemy
succeeded in capturing myself and two thousand two hundred rank and file, many of them being
wounded" (The Rebellion Record, 1865 p 258).
Prentiss was captured along with 2200 Union troops. In an interview with General Beauregard after
being captured, General Prentiss stated concerning the Union Army at Pittsburg "I am afraid that all
of our men will be taken" (New Orleans, Times–Picayune, 1862). When a bystander asked him
about General Buell he stated "Buell is not coming here, and if any forces are on the way they must
be very small. I know nothing of them" (New Orleans, Times–Picayune, 1862).
Both sides had suffered devastating losses and injuries. That evening soldiers from both armies wash

Ulysses S. Grant Essay
Ulysses S. Grant      American General and 18th President of the
United States of America, Ulysses S. Grant, was a master war strategist who won the first major
Union victories during the Civil War; however, political leadership proved to be far different from
military leadership for Grant. While in office from 1869–1877 Grant scarcely attempted to control
events, made injudicious appointments to public office, and had official corruption taint his
administration, although Grant himself was never said to be actually have been involved in this
corruption.      'The military life had no charms for me,'; Grant said

Brigadier General of volunteers, and he took up headquarters in Cairo Illinois. Only a few days after
he assumed his new command, he occupied Paducah, Kentucky at the strategic junction of the Ohio

that was neither well planned nor well executed. The arrival of Confederate reinforcements

Theme Of Marriage In Shiloh
Marriage is Like a Battlefield The central idea for Bobbie Ann Mason's "Shiloh" is that sometimes
people in a relationship want completely different things. Leroy was in an accident that broke his
leg, causing him to have to stay home. His wife Norma Jean didn't want him there. Norma Jean
started to become independent and the supporter of the family. After some drama about their dead
son, Randy, Norma Jean's mother, Mabel, told Leroy that he needed to take Norma Jean to Shiloh.
She said that that was where she had her honeymoon and it would help Leroy and Norma Jean's
marriage. Norma Jean and Leroy went to Shiloh, while there Norma Jean told Leroy that she wanted
to leave him. He told her that he wouldn't let her, but Norma Jean said she was going to do it. She
walked through the cemetery, stopped and started doing chest exercises. After his accident, Leroy
started to want to go back in time and redo everything. He wanted a version of his past that he never
had. Leroy thought that his wife would've been ecstatic that he'd be home all the time, and that their
marriage would thrive since they got to spend more time together. Mason shows the thought with, ...

was broken and stuck like his tractor out back. Norma Jean didn't like her past, so she worried about
the future. She started becoming more independent when she realized that she was unhappy in their

having a baby again to save their marriage, but Norma Jean didn't want the possibility of feeling that

Shiloh: A Short Story
Shiloh was different than any other girl that Vihaan had ever been interested in – that much was
certain. Perhaps more importantly, she was different both as an individual and different in the way
Vihaan liked her. More often than not, women were nothing more than passing infatuations for
Vihaan, a fling that he was aware wouldn't amount to anything. Not that there was anything
particularly wrong with the girls he pursued (for the most part) but because dating was difficult for
him. For a plethora of reasons. Most of all, what it boiled down to was two things: first, keeping
Vihaan's interest was an exceptionally complicated endeavor for just about anyone and second,
dating someone with both emotional baggage and an eight year old child wasn't something most
women his age were after. The latter is what scared him the most about Shiloh. Sure, Shiloh was
everything he could possibly want in a partner, but that was what made this so petrifying. Her
wanting him was finally something Vihaan was secure about, but would she want what came along
with being with him? Would she want the nights where they had to share the bed with Sanjay
because he was too ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

trying to maintain an air of confidence in his voice, "I don't want you to be with me if you can't

The Battle of Shiloh: May It Never Be Forgotten
On April 5th, 1862, the fields and thickets surrounding Shiloh church was just another
peaceful backwoods landscape. Soon it would undergo a horrific transformation. The cheerful
chirping of birds would be replaced by whizzing of flying pieces of metal shot with the intent to
kill. The green grass of the hillsides would be trampled and splattered his blood and gore. Instead
of the plains being inhabited by the occasional deer, they would be the home to wild hogs
feeding on the corpses of both blue and gray indiscriminately. The Battle of Shiloh would take
this place and make it a living hell for the soldiers involved, all of the former peace just a
memory. Both sides of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The actual beginning, however, was when a Union patrol stumbled upon the
Confederates and then they began skirmishing. Eventually, when the bulk of the Confederate
army had come to the Union lines the skirmishing became a full–on charge. The Union command
was late to respond and found its soldier being continually pushed back. "Sherman too was
warned," writes Shelby Foote in his classic Civil War commentary The Civil War: A Narrative,
"but took no heed because the alarm was sounded by the same Colonel he had rebuked for crying
wolf the day before" (p. 333). He felt that way until, finally responding to the summons, had
both his aide and his hand shot by the enemy. An article on the website for the Civil War Trust
states that almost two–thirds of the Union land force was routed in this first rush (Sword).
Additionally, many Confederates slowed during this attack in order to loot the Union camps and
fill their starving stomachs with the breakfasts of those they had just driven out. With their
ferocious cries, the Confederates had overwhelmed the unprepared soldiers in blue.
Johnston hoped to use the momentum of this charge to seal the Confederacy's defeat. He
wanted to trap the Union forces using the river banks they had chosen to camp beside for
protection. Johnston spoke on his plan, saying, "they can present no greater front between those

The Second Phase Of The Battle Of Shiloh Essay
The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh starts as reinforcements from General Buell's Army of the
Ohio and a unit of Grant's own reserve division joined the Union Army now positioned at Pittsburg
Landing. These reinforcements added over 22,500 men to the Union lines13 bringing the total
number of Union forces to over 45,000, which is more than they had on 6 April, the first day of
fighting.14 On April 7, General Grant renewed the fighting with an aggressive counteract.15 Greatly
outnumbered (Confederate forces now around 25,000) and disorganized the Confederate forces now
under General Beauregard fought hard but eventually had to retreat to back Corinth.16 The second
phase of the Battle of Shiloh was won by General Grant and his Union forces due to two main
reasons. The first, Union troop numbers greatly outnumbered their enemy, over 45,000 to 25,000
respectively. And secondly, the reinforcements received by General Grant had not fought the day
before and were fresh and excited to fight, unlike the exhausted remaining Confederate troops.17
This was the bloodiest battle fought on American soil up to that point, with 23,746 casualties
(Union: 13,047; Confederate: 10,699).18 The Union lost more men but claimed the victory because
the Confederate Army retreated back to Corinth, Mississippi.

In the short story "Shiloh" written by Bobbie Ann Mason, she expresses a theme stating that taking
life for granted causes individuals to lose sight of what is important and how people become blinded
by everyone and everything around them. Emotions take a big toll on the way a person handles a
situation and people do not necessarily compartmentalize in order to make the right decision with
ease. There are various characters represented throughout the story ranging from dynamic to round
characters. Norma Jean and Leroy Moffitt are the antagonist and protagonist, both of them are at
war with each other. Situational irony occurs when Leroy arrives home and continues to stay home

Norma Jean is presented as a dynamic character due to the fact that her attitude and outlook starts
changing towards her husband Leroy and her marriage. She went from spending time with her
husband to being an introvert. She begins enjoying her time alone and becomes very selfish. She
was strong at one point and the past just ate her up inside letting it get the best of her. All the
attention is drawn to herself and she does not take the time to see how Leroy is feeling or reacting to
this sudden behavior. In paragraph fifty four it states how Norma Jean changes into this selfish
creature that Leroy does not even know anymore after sixteen years of marriage. "Before his
accident, when Leroy came home he used to stay in the house with Norma Jean, watching TV in bed
and playing cards. She would cook fried chicken, picnic ham, chocolate pie–all his favorites. Now
he is home alone much of the time. In the mornings, Norma Jean disappears, leaving a cooling place
in the bed" (Mason paragraph 54). Norma Jean loses her father and son and now she is just letting
herself slowly drift away out of her husband's life. Norma Jean's appearance does not change much
in Leroy's eyes. She keeps up with her physical and outer appearance but its her inner self that need
massive work. Her attitude with her mother and husband starts coming off aggressive and careless.
In paragraph 110, Norma Jean's repsonse is spoken without proper mannerism.

One Kind Of Officer Theme
Throughout Bierce's many short stories, he focuses on many themes. Two of these themes are fate
and the incapability of senior officers. In two stories, these themes feature prominently. In both,
junior officers are forced to obey the orders of their commander without question. The actions of the
junior officers often lead to a fateful conclusion. In "One Kind of Officer," Bierce presents the story
of Captain Ransome, a Union artillery captain. At the outset, Ransome is instructed: "it is not
permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey my order – which permit me to
repeat. If you perceive any movement of troops in your front you are to open fire" (105). As
Ransome returns to his battery, a thick fog "closed in about him like a visible doom" (105). The
"mist had isolated him [Captain Ransome] as completely as if he hand been in the heart of the
desert" (108). When news comes from the pickets that the enemy is approaching, Captain Ransome
looks deeply into the fog. "A slight pallor came into his face, a slight compression affected the lines
of his lips" (109). This slight show of emotion shows that Ransome knew that the approaching
soldiers were in fact not Confederates, but a Union brigade. Under orders, Ransome has no choice
but to commence firing. When Lieutenant Price protests Ransome's actions, Ransome repeats
General Cameron's orders: "it is not permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey
my orders" (111). When

The American Civil War Is No Exception
Every war has at least one pivotal point that begs the question, "What if this event had happened
differently?" The American Civil War is no exception. Many Southerners made claims that the
winning of the Battle of Shiloh could have won the entire war for the Confederacy. Because they
lost, however, debate is still had about who is really to blame for the failure at Shiloh. Many try to
pinpoint the blame to one specific factor whether that be the leadership under General Pierre
Gustave Toutant Beauregard following General Albert Sidney Johnston's death, the intel that was far
below par, or the equipment the Confederate soldiers had to use. In reality, it was a combination
between all these factors that would seal the Confederates' fate. ... Show more content on

On April 3, Gen. Johnston mobilized his troops and marched towards Pittsburg Landing where they
arrived on April 6 because of road and whether conditions. At 5:00 AM, Johnston launched a
surprise attack on the unsuspecting Union camps. Because the divisions that had little to no
experience were in the area where the attack was first made, the Confederates quickly broke through
many Union lines successfully and wreaked havoc. They stormed the camps and slaughtered many
of these men in their tents. The Union forces were pushed back at their flanks. One line, however,
stood firm against the Confederate onslaught. General Benjamin M. Prentiss held his line and did
not allow the Confederates to break through while fighting in a sunken road that is estimated to be
about 3 feet deep in what is known as the "The Hornet's Nest" while waiting for reinforcements.
By the end of the first day of fighting, it seemed clear that the Confederates dominated the North by
inflicting a high number of casualties and had nearly wiped out Grant's entire force. The South
suffered an even more monumental blow that day in the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston.
Johnston was fatally shot in the leg just outside the "Hornet's Nest" and bled to death shortly
thereafter. As a four–star general, he is still the highest ranking officer killed in

should have made a deal with Judd. They claim that Marty greatly desired to keep Shiloh for his
own and needed to take every chance he came upon to do that. However, this belief is irrelevant,
because while the two deeply loved each other, Shiloh rightfully belonged to Judd. Judd bought
Shiloh with his money and therefore Marty had no right to take him for his own. Along with this,
people also argue that Judd signed the deal making it firm. This argument also remains inadequate
because Marty knew virtually nothing about creating a firm deal. Judd did indeed sign a paper bag
marking the deal, however, Marty lacked a witness and trust in Judd. Judd's signature meant nothing
in causing the deal to remain strong. In fact, it instead caused much more pain for Marty. Neither of
these opposing arguments– that Marty desired to keep Shiloh, and that Judd signed a deal– prove
any adequate excuse for Marty to make a hasty and foolish deal with a cruel and untrustworthy

interesting book that everyone should read even if it does have bad grammar. The first part of the
story is explaining about the main character and his family. It starts with a little of what's happening
with their finances. The first time we see Shiloh is when our main character, Marty, is walking on

Shiloh Literary Analysis
What makes a seemingly normal book a classic? Literary lenses. One of those classic books, Shiloh
by Phyllis Reynolds, shows the reader justice, difficult choices, and allows the reader to discover
how it uses literary lenses to become a classic. By studying the novel through various literary lenses,
the reader can see different perspectives which is important because it brings more depth and
dimension, making Shiloh a children's classic.
Word choice, figures of speech, literary devices, symbols, themes in Shiloh help bring the book to
life (shows new perspectives). Using this lense in text greatly enhances the reader's understanding of
the novel. As stated in Shiloh, "[...]but if he wanders off again, I'll whup the daylights out of him".
(Reynolds, 27). This quote vaguely suggests that this takes place in the 1900's, reminding the reader
that reading in between the lines is key to thoroughly understanding the book. This novel also states,
"My dream sort of leaks out like water in a paper bag." (Reynolds, 21). This quote underpins the
idea of how close reading greatly affects how the readers perceive an ... Show more content on

with us and talks about grown–up things." (Reynolds, 69). This quote demonstrates how the main
character, Marty, and his friend, David, have contrasting ways of living. Marty lives a more simple
and humble life, while his friend lives more opulently. Like word choice, binaries too help the
reader understand the novel in a more in depth way. The book also states, "For the first time I can
tell Dad's getting impatient with me. "Now you get of your head right now. If it's Travers's dog, it's
no mind of ours how he treats it." (Reynolds, 24)." This quote demonstrates how binaries can be

Battle Of Shiloh
I have been reflecting over the Battle of Shiloh for about a week now, and I think that I can finally
write my feelings. This battle is very important in the war so far. I am extremely proud of my
soldiers for fighting this surprise attack. Man, none of us were expecting it! I was such a proud
general those 2 days. My men fought as hard as they could, but unfortunately some people have to
die. Since I have had a lot of time to think over this battle, I have come to the conclusion that this
battle is the most important so far. First off, I have just found out that there were about 23,000
casualties in this battle. I found out that we lost 13,000 men that day. Some died, some were
captured, and some wounded. That battle is the bloodiest

Essay on Shelby Foote's Shiloh
Shelby Foote's Shiloh
In the novel Shiloh, historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching
account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By
mirroring the troops' movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier's
mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues
behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and
Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the
muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author's vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a
pivotal battle in American history.

This is a really small book (just over 200 pages) and while the images are graphic and the characters
accessable, the author just doesn't have the space to spread out and let the reader develop a real
emotional response to these characters and their actions. Nor is he able to provide any perspective
on the battle and what it means – even for the individual characters he has presented.
I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with
Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn't really stand on its own. The reader must come equiped
with prior knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but
I would have preferred a more comprehensive treatment – something more like Tom Wicker's Unto
This Hour. That's just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. I can't help it if I
just want more.
Fans of Shelby Foote's massive three volume Narrative History of the Civil War, (and I am the
work's biggest fan), will surely find something they like in Foote's earlier novel about the battle of
Shiloh. I couldn't help thinking, however, that Foote's real calling is as historian and commentator,
and his effort to write a novel here seems to be a bit off the mark.
Perhaps unfairly, novels of the Civil War tend to get compared to Michael Shaara's brilliant Killer
Angels, a comparison that does not bode

Sitting in his Paducah, Kentucky home, Leroy stares towards the backyard where his rig is parked.
He says it looks "like a gigantic bird that has flown home to roost"

Leroy is misinformed. In fact, he is scared of what the future holds. To pass the time he builds
models from kits, including log cabins, hardly a productive activity. Sitting on the couch he realizes
that "in all the years he as on the road he never took time to examine anything" (Mason 46). He's
speaking about the scenery on the road but I can deduct that in addition to scenery, Leroy neglected
to examine his marriage. At this point, Leroy's marriage is in a irreconcilable state. The only
connection Leroy can forge with his wife is when she starts talking about cosmetics (creams, toners,
moisturizers). He also thinks about petroleum products – axle grease and diesel fuel. Don't get me
wrong, Leroy feels guilty about his long absences, but now that he's home, he wishes that his wife
would celebrate his permanent homecoming more happily. This foreshadows her relative
disappointment with the marriage and its impending end. Leroy even observes that they

Analysis Of The Book ' Shiloh '
Have you ever stopped to think if society and acceptance was a better life years ago? Would you
have liked to live under the strict rules and guidelines they did in the nineteenth century? The short
story, Shiloh, is written in the 1970's and is a story about a couple going through changes in their life
and trying to cope after the death of the son, years ago. The settings is in western Kentucky, and the
lives of Norma Jean and Leroy, have been reunited after Leroy has been disabled in a tractor–trailer
accident. For the last fifteen years Leroy has been on the road and seldom is home. The story is told
from Leroy's point of view and he quickly realizes he does not know his wife any longer. Norma
Jean, Leroy's wife, undergoes major life changes as she and Leroy work to maintain a normal
household. Gender roles, relationships, and communication are important factors that must be
addressed when any couple enter into an ongoing relationship. In the story Shiloh, it is no different,
but what is different is the acceptance of how these issues are carried out. Gender roles were
definitely reversed at a time when it was not as acceptable. The relationship and communication
became non–existent. Shiloh begins with Norma Jean working on her pectoral muscles. Leroy sees
her as Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is a strong, thin character that Leroy can identify with.
Their relationship suffers incredibly after the accident and Leroy is forced to be home. Leroy loves

One such symbol is the log cabin that Leroy wants to build for Norma Jean. The log cabin is
mentioned continually throughout the story in discussions between Leroy and Norma Jean. At first
glance the log cabin seems to be just an obsession by Leroy's thinkering side (Leroy builds
numerous models during the course of the story such as a B–17 Bomber (p. 804)). However, the log
cabin actually represents Leroy and Norma Jean's marriage. Leroy wants to build the cabin for
Norma Jean while Norma Jean thinks the cabin is a stupid idea. Determinedly, Leroy states that "I'm
going to build you this house." [. . .] "I want to make you a real home." To which Norma Jean
replied, "I don't want to live in any log cabin." (p. 808). Leroy clings to the ... Show more content on

Birds are used in "Shiloh" to describe a sense of freedom for Norma Jean but a sense of nesting for
Leroy. While Leroy wants to be at home with Norma Jean and settle down in the log cabin, a nest,
Norma Jean wants to be free and fly off like a bird would. Symbolically, the narrator is likening the
main character to birds: "It (Leroy's rig) sits in the backyard like a gigantic bird that has flown home
to roost." (p. 804). Leroy's rig is an extension of him and shows that both he and his rig are home to
stay and settle with Norma Jean. However, Norma Jean has a different association with birds.
Additionally, the narrator describes that, "She is picking cake crumbs from the cellophane wrapper,
like a fussy bird." (p. 812). Obviously, this relates Norma Jean to a bird in the way she was eating
the cake crumbs. Moreover, Norma Jean is specifically stated as a "fussy bird". Norma Jean has
finally hit her end and wants to leave but does not know how to say it to Leroy. Norma Jean seems
fussy to Leroy but in reality she is conflicted internally and ready to move on with her life. While
birds are an important symbol in the story, the graveyard at Shiloh is immensely important as

Shiloh A Requiem Essay
Unit 5 Culminating Writing Assignment
The Civil War is one of the most central events in American History, determining what kind of
nation it would be. Northern victory preserved the United States as one nation and ended slavery.
Shiloh got its name from the Shiloh Meeting House, a sight of religious significance of the first
battle of the American Civil War. The Battle of Shiloh took place from April 6 to April 7 of 1862,
and got its name from the nearby church. "Shiloh–A Requiem" by Herman Melville is an elegy that
uses an assortment of literary techniques, structure, and symbolism to exemplify the cruelty of the
Civil War. "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" written by Ray Bradbury takes place during the Civil War.
It tells the story of a young boy named Joby, and describes his journey of being a drummer boy
using variations of meaning and tone.
"Shiloh–A Requiem," starts by displaying Shiloh as a "forest field" that has been cleared and is
trying to return to its previous state. Melville uses the event of when America was left isolated
during the struggle and suffered in the weary church, to state, "The church so lone, the log–built

The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was a major battle in the
Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought April 6–7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee. A
Union force known as the Army of the Tennessee under Major General Ulysses S. Grant had moved
via the Tennessee River deep into Tennessee and was encamped principally at Pittsburg Landing,
Tennessee on the west bank of that river, where the Confederate Army of Mississippi, under General
Albert Sidney Johnston and second–in–command Pierre G. T. Beauregard, launched a surprise

Jill McCorkle, along with Bobbie Ann Mason often use the symbolism of a short story to further the
meaning of the piece. In the short story "Shiloh", Mason uses Leroy and Norma Jean to exhibit a
further meaning of the story by effectively using symbolism. In addition to "Shiloh", McCorkle also
uses symbolism in her story "Cats" to symbolise how cats can be related to humans in multiple
ways. McCorkle describes the relationship between two cats, Pumpkin Pie and Possum, and their
two human counterparts, Anne and Abbott, and how they share similar characteristics. In works such
as "Shiloh" and "Cats", symbolism furthers the meaning of the story and leave the interpretation of
the work up to the reader.
In Bobbie Ann Mason's short story "Shiloh", Mason uses the marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean to

Mission Command As A Military Leader
Mission Command is a military leader's guide to being an effective and reasonable leader
maintaining both command and control of garrison and wartime environments. Mission Command
is guided by six principles beginning with "build cohesive teams through mutual trust, create shared
understanding, provide a clear commander's intent, exercise disciplined initiative, use mission
orders, and accept prudent risk"( 3. Army Staff. "Mission Command." Fort Benning, Maneuver
Center of Excellence). These six principles are what Mission Command is built around and they
allow leaders to reach their full potential, if adhered to properly. The problem is that leaders believe
they are following these principles, when in reality their subordinates may not see it the same way.
The principles that show the biggest issues would be shared understanding, and a clear commander's
intent. Creating a shared understanding and providing a clear commander's intent really go together,
because without one you cannot have the other. The problem with these principles is that what is
clear to one subordinate or individual is not clear to another, not everyone has the same reading
comprehension skills or the same train of thought. It has been discussed numerous times throughout
the years about how to use orders and a commander's intent that gives orders without directly saying
so, or in other words, implied tasks. In combat arms military occupational specialties, enlisted

Civil War Battle Of Shiloh
Civil War Battle of Shiloh Scholars still debate the various causes of the U.S. Civil War (1861–
1865). However, few disagree that the issue of slavery (and the status assigned to black Americans)
had been eroding relations between Northern and Southern states from the first days of American
independence, and culminated in actual armed conflict shortly after Abraham Lincoln's first election
to the presidency in 1860 ("The American Civil War," n.d.). On April 12, 1861 Confederate troops
under General Pierre Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter (in Charleston, South Carolina) with fifty
cannons, thus initiating the beginning of the Civil War ("The U.S. Civil War," 1996). And this, of
course, was only the first of many military actions which would rage throughout the 5–year conflict.
Economics, social policies, political maneuvering, and numerous other elements caused the war and
its seemingly endless continuation. But to active combat soldiers, the importance of such issues
often paled in comparison to the struggle for survival in battle. Throughout the course of the Civil
War "Roughly 2% of the population, an estimated 620,000 men, lost their lives in the line of duty.
Taken as a percentage of today 's population, the toll would have risen as high as 6 million souls"
("Civil War Casualties, n.d.). The numerous battles fought that were responsible for this horrific
death toll included everything from small, armed, nameless skirmishes to full–blown engagements
which involved

once, blossoms fell from the orchard trees and lit with rustling tops on the drumskin. At Midnight a
peach stone left miraculously on a branch through winter flickered by a bird, fell swift and unseen.
Struck once like panic, which jerked the boy upright" (Bradbury 318). Already stated from the text
is how the literature information is not accurate. Nothing from this is facts from the Civil war.
Throughout the text it tells a story from that time and what it could be like, the actual story does not
have the basic facts as would a informational text would. On the other hand, from an informational
text, "Battle of Shiloh", "The Battle of Shiloh began at sunrise on April 6, 1862 –– the Sabbath –– as
44,000 Confederate soldiers swooped down on an unsuspecting Union Army encampment near
Pittsburgh Landing, a nondescript hog–and–cotton steamboat dock on the Tennessee River." This is
a clear fact with numbers involved. So this tells the reader what was going on and does not have any
made up people to fill in the story. It is just simply what had happened. So all in all when comparing
two texts one from literature and and informational text they differ in how the reader can learn about
the

Analysis Of The Battle Of Shiloh

  • 1. Analysis Of The Battle Of Shiloh For my battle analysis assignment, I have chosen to examine the battle of Shiloh. This battle began April 6 – 7 1862, in the Pittsburg Landing area of Tennessee. In Hebrew Shiloh, means "peace" nonetheless, this battlefield was far from a place of peace from April 6–7 1862. This battle was the bloodiest civil war battle to date and occurred between the Union and Confederate armies. Having analyzed the battle from multiple sources, I have discovered a number of operational, tactical, and logistical mistakes that contributed to the Confederate losses suffered. My sources include documentaries, historical videos, books, and articles from historians and civil war experts who have spent their lives studying and dissecting the civil war, its battles, commanders, and tactics. As part of my analysis, I will highlight the Confederate mistakes that could have produced a different outcome of this historical battle. In setting the stage for the battle of Shiloh let us first briefly discuss the civil war. The civil war began with its first battle on 12 April, 1861 at Fort Sumter, South Carolina to the last battle at Anderson, South Carolina on May 1, 1865 (Civil War Trust , 2014 ) between the Union and Confederate Armies. The civil war consisted of nearly 50 major battles; the battle of Shiloh was the first scandalous and essentially paramount battle. (Civil War Battles, 2016) The armies of the north were fighting to reunite the nation, while the armies of the south were fighting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He found out it was Judd Travers dog and he abuses his animals. Although Marty did find out that the dog belonged to Judd Travers. Marty decided to keep the dog which is breaking the law. Marty figured that doing something just is better than doing it by the law because he knew that Judd would hurt the dog more if he had given him back. Marty found that doing something wrong for the greater good was better than just giving that poor dog a ride back to abusement. Marty also had troubles while keeping the dog. • 3. History of the Battle of Shiloh Introduction The Battle of Shiloh is historically known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. Part of the Western Campaign, Shiloh came on the heels of Union victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson, primarily as a Confederate attempt to halt the Union's advance into the deep South. Though causes of the Union victory at Shiloh may be disputed, the significance of this Battle to the War's outcome is undeniable. Analysis When, Where and Why the Battle of Shiloh Took Place The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6–7, 1862 (Daniel, 1997, p. 319) in southern Tennessee's Hardin County, particularly at Pittsburg Landing (Groom, 2012, p. 41). The short answer to why this Battle took place is that the Confederacy wanted to stop the Union's advance far into Tennessee and eventually into Mississippi by a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grant's "Army of the Tennessee" before Union Major General Don Carlos Buell's "Army of the Ohio" could arrive and join Grant's forces (Groom, 2012, p. 141). The long answer to why this Battle took place can be found in the two prior Confederate losses at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February, 1862, and the consequences of those losses. The captures of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson were the first two Union victories since the beginning of the War on April 12, 1861 (Woodworth, 2011, p. 89). The Union capture of Fort Henry in western Tennessee on February 6, 1862 allowed Union forces to move 12 miles east overland to Fort Donelson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Battle Of Shiloh The three probably most important battles of the Civil War were great victories, but came at a price. The Confederate army surrendered at the battle of Vicksburg on July 4th 1863. They were sad and ashamed after prolonged violent attacks. This was the end of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. The sad loss of Pemberton's army and the stronghold in Vicksburg on the mighty Mississippi River was very effective in splitting the Confederacy in half. Grants skilled and well planned military success in the West boosted his proud reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as the new and better General – In – Chief of the Union. When Grant's army captured the mighty Mississippi we were able to cut the supply lines, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... General Grant and his army of forty–two thousand men had camped along the river. The Confederates second stupid leader, General Albert Sidney Johnston said, "I would fight him if he were a million." The poorly prepared rebels were on the march and without food for twenty–four hours. The tired and hungry Confederate Army was still able to catch Grant's army by surprise. Eight of ten union soldiers at Shiloh had never fought before. At the end of the Battle of Shiloh twenty–four thousand men were dead, wounded, or captured. On April 25, 1862 Union forces under David Farragut captured New Orleans, Louisiana the largest city in the South. Farragut, who was of Spanish descent grew up in the South but remained loyal to the North. The capture of New Orleans was the key to getting the mighty and powerful Mississippi River. The North was able to cut the supply lines, cut the water highway travel down, and cut states away from the country. The capture of mighty and powerful Mississippi River was the result of three of the battles of the Civil War. The Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of New Orleans, and the Battle of Shiloh. These three battles were important to the success of the Union Army without them we probably would not have won the war. The battles are very interesting, complex, and cruel but wars are wars and a lot of people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Shiloh And Trifles In the midst of a tragedy, a person's morals and ethics can be put to the test. Under certain stressors, a person can make decisions that drastically change the outcome of their situation. This is shown comparatively in the readings Trifles by Susan Glaspell and Shiloh by Bobbie Ann Manson. Both readings contain societies with stereotypical gender roles that impact the ethics of the women and men in the stories while also making the characters questions their own morals. In Trifles, the women uncover the dirty truth hidden away in the Wright's house. As they do this the women become sensitive to Mrs. Wright who is the murderer in the story. Both Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters humanize Mrs. Wright instead of just looking at her like a criminal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The women in Trifles, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, are left to hide the evidence of the murders from the authorities and their husbands. This causes their husbands to dismiss their wives' opinions as they normally do which solidifies their morals. While the women in this story are debating their morals because they feel bad for Mrs. Wright rather than the dead man. In the case of Leroy and Norma Jean from Shiloh, their morals are tested when they examine their marriage before and after the tragic death of their infant son, Randy. Their community is growing rapidly which is something Leroy never noticed until he had no choice but to notice. These modern changes cause Leroy to cling to his traditional morals which cause him to attempt to fix his traditional marriage. Norma Jean's mother, Mabel, causes tension when she also wants Norma Jean and Leroy to mend their crumbling marriage because she believes that is ethically correct to stay ... • 6. Military Leadership : No Control Group Exists Military leadership is forever difficult to umpire as no control group exists. One may see the verdict of hindsight view passive strategy unfavorably, like General George McClellan who built the Union army in the early stages of the war but was a lethargic and fearful field commander who seemed incapable of gathering the courage to assertively take on Confederate General Robert E. Lee, an American soldier best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia; others are indicted on being too reckless. Shelby Foote, an American historian and novelist, describes the massacre on Gettysburg by Major General George Pickett, proclaiming, "And that was the mistake he made, the mistake of all mistakes....and there was scarcely a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In February of 1862, Ulysses S. Grant took control of all union forces following his impressive governance over the reinforced Confederates under Brigadier General Gideon J. Pillow at the battle of Fort Donelson (Grant 149). Ultimately, he developed a grand strategy to defeat the Confederacy and in the end, with much resistance, succeeded. Grant began to greatly take advantage of the Northern upper hand in resources, transforming the war into a bloody but efficient battle of attrition. He in this manner revived the Northern war exertion and saw it through to its finish, with General Robert Lee surrendering on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in Appomattox, Virginia (329). The battle of Shiloh (April 6–7, 1862), the Civil War's first catastrophically bloody battle, serves as an illustration of Grant's military prowess. The implementation of sound tactics with the advantages provided to him explicitly in Shiloh and throughout the American Civil War, along with his sincere concern and belief in his troops, result in victory here and in the conflict altogether. Following defeats at Fort Henry and Donelson, Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the western armies within the Western Department, withdrew to Corinth, Mississippi in order to start preparing for an offensive maneuver against Grant (150). He was eager to catch Grant before the Army of the Ohio under Major ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis Of The Battle Of Shiloh The Battle of Shiloh took place on April 6ththrough the 7th in 1862 in the southwestern Tennessee region. The Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the confederate forces in the Western Theater wanted to defeat the Union Major General Grant's army before it could be reinforced by Major General Don Carlos Buell's Army of Ohio which was marching from Nashville. Confederate General Johnston ordered a surprise attack on Grant's encampment which was located close to Shiloh Church. Johnston's troops caught Grant's men by surprise and deftly drove the Union soldiers back toward their defensive perimeter on the heights above Pittsburg Landing on the Tennessee River. • 8. Battle Of Shiloh Essay April 12–April 14, 1861 The war for the States Rights has begun on this day. The war started when the Confederates bombarded Fort Sumter. Edmund Ruffin, of the Confederates, fired one of the first shots upon us and he has begun the war. My name is Jeremy Smith and I am fighting for the Union Army. Before the States Rights war, I was a slave and plantation owner. I also had a house, nice farm, a big field full of wheat and corn, and a family, but that was before I enrolled to fight for the Union Army. The battle of Fort Sumter started when the Confederates bombarded the fort. We tried to fight back, but they just kept attacking us. It seems as if they are toying with us because they are firing once every two minutes from what seems to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The retreat was pretty organized up until the Bull Run crossings, yet it was poorly instructed by the Union officers. A Union wagon was turned over by Confederate artillery shells on a bridge across Cub Run Creek and started a panic among McDowell's forces. We fought the best we could and with all we had, yet we still didn't win. Jeremy Smith April 6, 1862 On this day the Battle of Shiloh has begun. The Battle of Shiloh is taking place in Hardin County, Tennessee. The Battle of Shiloh started when the Union sent out a patrol to see if they could find anything. I was with the main patrol group searching for the Confederate's main camp. A little while later, we came across a group of Confederates in the forest. I think they were searching for us, yet we won the engagement. Then we came across some Confederate outposts. We also won that engagement, as well. Then the general told me to go back and help the main lines. On my way back the Union must have been pretty shaken from when the patrols were firing at the Confederates in the forest because when I was running back to join them, they were firing at me until I told them I was a Union soldier. They asked me some questions to make sure I was a Union soldier and not a Confederate spy. Then they told me to get in line and wait for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Known originally as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle fought in North America up to that time. Pittsburg Landing was an area from where the Yankees planned to attack the Confederates who had moved from Fort Donelson to Corinth, Mississippi. The North was commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant and the South by General Albert Sydney Johnston. The Union army was taken by surprise the first day when the Confederate Army unexpectedly attacked, but after Union reinforcements arrived the fighting virtually ended in a tie. In an interview with General Beauregard after being captured, General Prentiss stated concerning the Union Army at Pittsburg "I am afraid that all of our men will be taken" (New Orleans, Times–Picayune, 1862). When a bystander asked him about General Buell he stated "Buell is not coming here, and if any forces are on the way they must be very small. I know nothing of them" (New Orleans, Times–Picayune, 1862). Both sides had suffered devastating losses and injuries. That evening soldiers from both armies wash their wounds in a small lake. The pond took on a red tint from the troops blood loss. From then on, it was known as Bloody Pond. The South suffered a terrible loss at 2:30 in the afternoon of April 6, 1862. Grant, was a master war strategist who won the first major Union victories during the Civil War; however, political leadership proved to be far different from military leadership for Grant. While in office from 1869–1877 Grant scarcely attempted to control events, made injudicious appointments to public office, and had official corruption taint his administration, although Grant himself was never said to be actually have been involved in this corruption.      'The military life had no charms for me,'; Grant said later. On November 7th he attacked the Confederates at Belmont, MO in an assault that was neither well planned nor well executed. Early in the morning of April 6th, General Albert S. Leroy was in an accident that broke his leg, causing him to have to stay home. His wife Norma Jean didn't want him there. Norma Jean started to become independent and the supporter of the family. After some drama about their dead son, Randy, Norma Jean's mother, Mabel, told Leroy that he needed to take Norma Jean to Shiloh. She said that that was where she had her honeymoon and it would help Leroy and Norma Jean's marriage. Norma Jean and Leroy went to Shiloh, while there Norma Jean told Leroy that she wanted to leave him. He told her that he wouldn't let her, but Norma Jean said she was going to do it. She walked through the cemetery, stopped and started doing chest exercises. After his accident, Leroy started to want to go back in time and redo everything. Perhaps more importantly, she was different both as an individual and different in the way Vihaan liked her. More often than not, women were nothing more than passing infatuations for Vihaan, a fling that he was aware wouldn't amount to anything. Not that there was anything particularly wrong with the girls he pursued (for the most part) but because dating was difficult for him. For a plethora of reasons. Most of all, what it boiled down to was two things: first, keeping Vihaan's interest was an exceptionally complicated endeavor for just about anyone and second, dating someone with both emotional baggage and an eight year old child wasn't something most women his age were after. The latter is what scared him the most about Shiloh. Sure, Shiloh was everything he could possibly want in a partner, but that was what made this so petrifying. The Second Phase Of The Battle Of Shiloh Essay The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh starts as reinforcements from General Buell's Army of the Ohio and a unit of Grant's own reserve division joined the Union Army now positioned at Pittsburg Landing. These reinforcements added over 22,500 men to the Union lines13 bringing the total number of Union forces to over 45,000, which is more than they had on 6 April, the first day of fighting.14 On April 7, General Grant renewed the fighting with an aggressive counteract.15 Greatly outnumbered (Confederate forces now around 25,000) and disorganized the Confederate forces now under General Beauregard fought hard but eventually had to retreat to back Corinth.16 The second phase of the Battle of Shiloh was won by General Grant and his Union forces due to two main reasons. The first, Union troop numbers greatly outnumbered their enemy, over 45,000 to 25,000 respectively. And secondly, the reinforcements received by General Grant had not fought the day before and were fresh and excited to fight, unlike the exhausted remaining Confederate troops.17 This was the bloodiest battle fought on American soil up to that point, with 23,746 casualties (Union: 13,047; Confederate: 10,699).18 The Union lost more men but claimed the victory because the Confederate Army retreated back to Corinth, Mississippi. Battle of Shiloh Essay In the short story "Shiloh" written by Bobbie Ann Mason, she expresses a theme stating that taking life for granted causes individuals to lose sight of what is important and how people become blinded by everyone and everything around them. Emotions take a big toll on the way a person handles a situation and people do not necessarily compartmentalize in order to make the right decision with ease. There are various characters represented throughout the story ranging from dynamic to round characters. Norma Jean is presented as a dynamic character due to the fact that her attitude and outlook starts changing towards her husband Leroy and her marriage. She was strong at one point and the past just ate her up inside letting it get the best of her. All the attention is drawn to herself and she does not take the time to see how Leroy is feeling or reacting to this sudden behavior. In paragraph fifty four it states how Norma Jean changes into this selfish creature that Leroy does not even know anymore after sixteen years of marriage. "Before his accident, when Leroy came home he used to stay in the house with Norma Jean, watching TV in bed and playing cards. She would cook fried chicken, picnic ham, chocolate pie–all his favorites. Now he is home alone much of the time. In the mornings, Norma Jean disappears, leaving a cooling place in the bed" (Mason paragraph 54). Norma Jean loses her father and son and now she is just letting herself slowly drift away out of her husband's life. Norma Jean's appearance does not change much in Leroy's eyes. • 18. One Kind Of Officer Theme Throughout Bierce's many short stories, he focuses on many themes. Two of these themes are fate and the incapability of senior officers. In two stories, these themes feature prominently. In both, junior officers are forced to obey the orders of their commander without question. The actions of the junior officers often lead to a fateful conclusion. In "One Kind of Officer," Bierce presents the story of Captain Ransome, a Union artillery captain. At the outset, Ransome is instructed: "it is not permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey my order – which permit me to repeat. If you perceive any movement of troops in your front you are to open fire" (105). As Ransome returns to his battery, a thick fog "closed in about him like a visible doom" (105). The "mist had isolated him [Captain Ransome] as completely as if he hand been in the heart of the desert" (108). When news comes from the pickets that the enemy is approaching, Captain Ransome looks deeply into the fog. "A slight pallor came into his face, a slight compression affected the lines of his lips" (109). This slight show of emotion shows that Ransome knew that the approaching soldiers were in fact not Confederates, but a Union brigade. Under orders, Ransome has no choice but to commence firing. When Lieutenant Price protests Ransome's actions, Ransome repeats General Cameron's orders: "it is not permitted to you to know anything. It is sufficient that you obey my orders" (111). When ... Many Southerners made claims that the winning of the Battle of Shiloh could have won the entire war for the Confederacy. Because they lost, however, debate is still had about who is really to blame for the failure at Shiloh. Many try to pinpoint the blame to one specific factor whether that be the leadership under General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard following General Albert Sidney Johnston's death, the intel that was far below par, or the equipment the Confederate soldiers had to use. In reality, it was a combination between all these factors that would seal the Confederates' fate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On April 3, Gen. Johnston mobilized his troops and marched towards Pittsburg Landing where they arrived on April 6 because of road and whether conditions. At 5:00 AM, Johnston launched a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Union camps. Because the divisions that had little to no experience were in the area where the attack was first made, the Confederates quickly broke through many Union lines successfully and wreaked havoc. They stormed the camps and slaughtered many of these men in their tents. The Union forces were pushed back at their flanks. One line, however, stood firm against the Confederate onslaught. General Benjamin M. Prentiss held his line and did not allow the Confederates to break through while fighting in a sunken road that is estimated to be about 3 feet deep in what is known as the "The Hornet's Nest" while waiting for reinforcements. By the end of the first day of fighting, it seemed clear that the Confederates dominated the North by inflicting a high number of casualties and had nearly wiped out Grant's entire force. However, this belief is irrelevant, because while the two deeply loved each other, Shiloh rightfully belonged to Judd. Judd bought Shiloh with his money and therefore Marty had no right to take him for his own. Along with this, people also argue that Judd signed the deal making it firm. This argument also remains inadequate because Marty knew virtually nothing about creating a firm deal. Judd did indeed sign a paper bag marking the deal, however, Marty lacked a witness and trust in Judd. Judd's signature meant nothing in causing the deal to remain strong. One of those classic books, Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds, shows the reader justice, difficult choices, and allows the reader to discover how it uses literary lenses to become a classic. By studying the novel through various literary lenses, the reader can see different perspectives which is important because it brings more depth and dimension, making Shiloh a children's classic. Word choice, figures of speech, literary devices, symbols, themes in Shiloh help bring the book to life (shows new perspectives). Using this lense in text greatly enhances the reader's understanding of the novel. As stated in Shiloh, "[...]but if he wanders off again, I'll whup the daylights out of him". (Reynolds, 27). This quote vaguely suggests that this takes place in the 1900's, reminding the reader that reading in between the lines is key to thoroughly understanding the book. Nor is he able to provide any perspective on the battle and what it means – even for the individual characters he has presented. I think it helps to have read the section in his narrative history of the Civil War that deals with Shiloh. But this means that the novel doesn't really stand on its own. The reader must come equiped with prior knowledge or be left with questions that will require some research. Perhaps not bad, but I would have preferred a more comprehensive treatment – something more like Tom Wicker's Unto This Hour. That's just personal taste. Foote did what he intended and did it well. Would you have liked to live under the strict rules and guidelines they did in the nineteenth century? The short story, Shiloh, is written in the 1970's and is a story about a couple going through changes in their life and trying to cope after the death of the son, years ago. The settings is in western Kentucky, and the lives of Norma Jean and Leroy, have been reunited after Leroy has been disabled in a tractor–trailer accident. For the last fifteen years Leroy has been on the road and seldom is home. The story is told from Leroy's point of view and he quickly realizes he does not know his wife any longer. Norma Jean, Leroy's wife, undergoes major life changes as she and Leroy work to maintain a normal household. Gender roles, relationships, and communication are important factors that must be addressed when any couple enter into an ongoing relationship. In the story Shiloh, it is no different, but what is different is the acceptance of how these issues are carried out. Gender roles were definitely reversed at a time when it was not as acceptable. The relationship and communication became non–existent. Shiloh begins with Norma Jean working on her pectoral muscles. Leroy sees her as Wonder Woman. Norma has moved away from Leroy's level of maturity and instead of playing with toys or tinkering with petty, unimportant plans she is working towards a college degree and a higher intellectual level. Though, Leroy either does not care for truly intellectual activities because instead of following his wife's interests he tries to lock their relationship in by building her a log cabin. • 38. Mission Command As A Military Leader Mission Command is a military leader's guide to being an effective and reasonable leader maintaining both command and control of garrison and wartime environments. Mission Command is guided by six principles beginning with "build cohesive teams through mutual trust, create shared understanding, provide a clear commander's intent, exercise disciplined initiative, use mission orders, and accept prudent risk"( 3. Army Staff. "Mission Command." Fort Benning, Maneuver Center of Excellence). These six principles are what Mission Command is built around and they allow leaders to reach their full potential, if adhered to properly. The problem is that leaders believe they are following these principles, when in reality their subordinates may not see it the same way. The principles that show the biggest issues would be shared understanding, and a clear commander's intent. Creating a shared understanding and providing a clear commander's intent really go together, because without one you cannot have the other. The problem with these principles is that what is clear to one subordinate or individual is not clear to another, not everyone has the same reading comprehension skills or the same train of thought. It has been discussed numerous times throughout the years about how to use orders and a commander's intent that gives orders without directly saying so, or in other words, implied tasks. • 39. Civil War Battle Of Shiloh Civil War Battle of Shiloh Scholars still debate the various causes of the U.S. Civil War (1861– 1865). However, few disagree that the issue of slavery (and the status assigned to black Americans) had been eroding relations between Northern and Southern states from the first days of American independence, and culminated in actual armed conflict shortly after Abraham Lincoln's first election to the presidency in 1860 ("The American Civil War," n.d.). On April 12, 1861 Confederate troops under General Pierre Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter (in Charleston, South Carolina) with fifty cannons, thus initiating the beginning of the Civil War ("The U.S. Civil War," 1996). And this, of course, was only the first of many military actions which would rage throughout the 5–year conflict. Economics, social policies, political maneuvering, and numerous other elements caused the war and its seemingly endless continuation. But to active combat soldiers, the importance of such issues often paled in comparison to the struggle for survival in battle. Throughout the course of the Civil War "Roughly 2% of the population, an estimated 620,000 men, lost their lives in the line of duty. Taken as a percentage of today 's population, the toll would have risen as high as 6 million souls" ("Civil War Casualties, n.d.). The numerous battles fought that were responsible for this horrific death toll included everything from small, armed, nameless skirmishes to full–blown engagements which involved ... Not to mention, some kind of justification or maybe a different approach is happens a lot between siblings. The same way siblings may fight connects to the topic of learning history through literature compared to informational text. The way two authors may write or how they see something is just one way informational text and literature text can be different. As an example from "The Drummer Boy" of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury, "In the April night, more than once, blossoms fell from the orchard trees and lit with rustling tops on the drumskin. At Midnight a peach stone left miraculously on a branch through winter flickered by a bird, fell swift and unseen. Struck once like panic, which jerked the boy upright" (Bradbury 318). Already stated from the text is how the literature information is not accurate. Nothing from this is facts from the Civil war. Throughout the text it tells a story from that time and what it could be like, the actual story does not have the basic facts as would a informational text would. On the other hand, from an informational text, "Battle of Shiloh", "The Battle of Shiloh began at sunrise on April 6, 1862 –– the Sabbath –– as 44,000 Confederate soldiers swooped down on an unsuspecting Union Army encampment near Pittsburgh Landing, a nondescript hog–and–cotton steamboat dock on the Tennessee River." This is a clear fact with numbers involved. So this tells the reader what was going on and does not have any made up people to fill in the story. It is just simply what had happened.
