Within the break she had within her extremely busy schedule Stephanie has kindly taken
time within her 48 hour stop in London; which she is using to see family, to graciously
pose for Reverb magazine and update us on how her life has completely turned upside
down within the past two years as she has gone from being an unknown singing in pubs
and clubs to one of the biggest artists within the Pop genre in 2016/17 due to her
explosive second album. Reverbās Roxie Chapman sat down with her whist on one of her
very short breaks between shots to be brought up to date with her rapidly progressing
career.
As I watched on from the side of the shoot I could see the exhaustion and determination
within Stephanieās eyes due to the constant strain on her body and because of all the
travelling and constant touring, recording and writing her third studio album. It wasnāt
until the release of her single āI Canāt Stay Any Longerā that she became a global music
star. The latest single released from her first album āSignifyā raced to the top of the
charts in 40 countries. After this success there was a massive amount of expectation on
what she would produce for the second album. After releasing her second album just
three months ago the twenty-one year old has gone from strength to strength. When
she released her second studio album āBeaconā the success from āI Canāt Stay Any
Longerā carried on but with every single song on the album in a shorter amount of time.
I: Hi Stephanie, (āHiā) how are you?
S: Iām fine; Iām good I just feel exhausted but so excited at the same time. You know
when you just have a buzz from being proud of something that just drives you to keep
going.
I: Thatās good; I hope youāre not doing too much.
S: (Smiles) No, donāt worry about me its part of my job and itās what I love. This is why I
am having the small break to see family and friends just to recharge and have a rest, as
well as just feel normal again.
I: Thatās good! How have you been enjoying your short amount of time off so far?
2. S: Iām really enjoying it. Itās nice to be just home again and see familiar faces that remind
me to stay happy, healthy and down to earth.
I: Great! How do you feel after the success of your second album? Have you been able
to take in how much people have loved it?
S: I feel ecstatic and so grateful for the appreciation from the audiences and how they
accepted the way I wanted to go with my music within this album. Due to it being a mix
of both personal situations and ways to overcome the low points. It hasnāt really fully hit
me yet that it is my music, which people are listening to and loving thankfully. I get
tweets and direct messages each day saying how people have been affected by it and it
is such a pleasure to get them and know you are having a positive effect on someone
else through something you love.
I: Thatās really great to hear! Is there a large amount of pressure already on you when
you come to writing your next album?
S: Yes definitely, there feels like a massive amount of pressure already even though I
have only just released the last one.
I: Oh really? What kind of pressure is it? A demand for more music soon or to try within
a different genre?
S: Itās a bit of both to be honest, I really want to get writing again soon as I keep having
ideas that I am writing down, but maybe within the late spring early summer as I feel I
need a break between writing my second and third album as I want them both to be as
strong as each other.
I: Oh that sounds really interesting, it will be good to see what you create when you are
venturing into a different area. Is this something you are really into or are you slightly
hesitant towards it?
S: I am a little hesitant as I havenāt done it before, but I feel by expanding into different
genres it will mean that I am able to improve as an artist and develop my writing
techniques.
3. I: Iām sure it will be amazing whatever you produce.
S: Thank you!! That means so much.
I: How do your family feel about your success?
S: They are over the moon and are really supportive especially my parents and sister.
They have really helped to keep me grounded and not take everything I now have for
granted as my parents have always taught me to look after my things and appreciate
what I have, which is something I really make sure I do.
I: I bet it is a really big help for staying sane! Do you think you would be where you are
if it wasnāt for them?
S: No definitely not, they are my rock and I make sure that in any spare time I message
them to say āAre you free to talk?ā and ring them as they help with the loneliness of not
being around familiar faces. It really helps me get through each day.
I: Aw thatās lovely to hear. How has life changed for you within the past year and a half?
S: So much has happened, but I canāt believe it has been eighteen months! Everything
changed rather quickly after my first single had been released. There was so much to
take in as people who I had never met before knew who I was but it was quite steady
until I released āI Canāt Stay Any Longerā because all of a sudden there was so much
interest within my music it was actually shocking and it took me a few weeks to
understand that so many people wanted to listen to what I had created. As soon as this
was released there became a huge demand for me to bring out another album as soon
as possible with a lot of pressure to produce something that could continue to be
successful. I felt that I needed to be as quick and accurate as I could with bringing out
another album, but I wanted to do it right so that is why I took around ten months to
make sure I was completely happy with it before the first single was released. The
increased amount of recognition has meant that I have very little time to my self
anymore as I am constantly travelling and working which donāt get me wrong, I love, but
I have gone from seeing my family nearly every day and been so close to them as I lived
only around the corner to practically never seeing them in person and really only been
4. able to talk to them on the phone or Facetime unless I have booked that I am having a
break over a certain date.
