2. This contents page is very
minimalistic. This is because there
is a very empty and simple feel to
the whole contents page. I really
like the appearance of this contents
page as there is a clear and simple
layout that works effectively.
The use of the one and only main
image is effective because the one
picture of Kanye has a large
impact. I think that the choice of
photo within this page is very
effective due to the way that is
looks very dramatic. This is due to
the very serious look on Kanye’s
face which could be infrerenced as
a look of sadness or determination
as well as an act to look more
tough than he may actually be.
This may be to make him look
more powerful but with the eye
contact that the reader will see it
makes them feel like he is looking
intimidately at them.
The very bland colour scheme
within this page is effective as it is
continuous throughout the whole
page apart from the bright red
heart. There is a lot of attention
purposefully drawn to the heart due
to the contrasting colour which
clearly stands out within the light
grays.
There isn’t much text included
within the page which I like as
within most contents pages
there can be an overload with
text telling the reader what is
included within the magazine
issue in too much detail, where
as I feel this lets the reader
know just enough information
about what is included to make
them want to read the articles.
The image used may not have
come across this way I it were
to be of a woman, this is
because it is more likely ot
come across as sexualised.
But within this photo there is a
tough looking and covered up
man. This automatically shows
that it isn’t to be seen in a
sexual manner and is more
about showing a love and
passion for music. It also isn’t
sexualised because it isn’t
obvious whether the hand is
female or male reducing again
the look of a female grabbing
hold of the heart. Because this
isn’t clarified and the picture is
very contained it is very
powerful which is why I think it
is effective as the only photo on
the contents page.
3. This is the second contents page I am going to be breaking
down. I am going to split it into two different sections.
4. This is the first half of the Q magazine contents page.
I really like this as it comes across as very organised.
This is because the whole page is separated into
sections. I really like the use of the large picture
within the middle of the page as it is advertising for
one of the main articles within the magazine by just
having the picture of Take That which is a very
recognisable group within the UK, which is why Q can
effectively place a picture of the band without having
to label who they are. This shows that they have
thought about their audience and who they should
use within their magazine to attract sales.
The rest of this side looks effective because there is a
clear title and label to let the audience know what
details the page is containing. As well as a very neat
and well thought out information column. Within this
column there are the main bits of key information that
are in bold so that they are clear to the reader, there
are also the page numbers for the articles clearly
shown, the small bit of information underneath each
bright separator about the articles included. The hits
of red on the page clearly show that they are the
same as the shade of red that is used throughout the
rest of the magazine which causes them to become
more more familiar with the reader as this shade will
be used all throughout the edition and any other
issues of the magazine. The bright colour adds a pop
to the page and makes it more eye catching as well
as interesting which makes the reader want to read
the contents page instead of just flicking straight
through the magazine.
5. This is the second side of the Q music magazine
contents page. At first glance this side seems a lot more
fun and exciting, which is good as this will attract the
section of the audience that may not like the more simple
look of the other half. This side automatically looks more
attractive as it has the brighter colours and more
pictures, as well as the still organised and simple text
structure that is easy for the audience to read and see.
The use of more pictures within this half can come
across as more appealing as some audience members
do get magazine primarily for the pictures. The pictures
also allow more of a variety within race and gender within
the magazine on one page as there are the different
artists such as Rihanna who are able to balance out the
genders on the whole page. The use of the pictures that
are in colour are automatically giving more life and
adventure to the page as they have the bright colours
and different poses on. This helps to reduce the formality
of the magazine’s contents page whilst also still keeping
it looking professional.
With the clear set out within this side of the page it is
made easy for the audience to see who the artists are
that are featured within the issue and where to find them,
due to the very clear sizing and placing of the page
numbers as well as the very simply set out text of the
page which is following the layout of the other side of the
contents page.
