An interview with Rayne
1. An Interview with Rayne
We caught up with ….. to talk about her first worldwide tour next year andher new debut album
“Visor” that will be released next month. She talks about her quirky pre show rituals, her favourite
artists and her day to day life.
First of all it’s nice to meet you and I hope you’re having a good day so far!
“[laughs] Thank-you, it’s great to meet you too and I’m feeling great today.”
Good. So your first album is coming out next month, what can we expect to see?
“Well there are 14 songs, each are slightly different than the others. They all have um, different
meanings to each song. All the songs are relatable to the public which makes them so unique
compared to the trashy pop songs that just speak about partying, drugs and drinking and living the
egotistical and unrealistic “high life”. They’re very true to life and all written from past experiences
that I’ve had.”
Great stuff. What is your favourite song on this album and why?
“Hmm, well I have to say that I love ‘Sheer Perfection’ which is probably the obvious answer seeing
as I released it first. [laughs] But yeah, It is a hard choice but I genuinely have to say that I love ‘Sheer
Perfection’ and its meaning and lyrics. The words of the song are just so true to life.”
What is the story behind the song?
“Well it’s about somebody that I had a crush on for a while, a long time. [giggles] Its one of those
songs where most people can understand, like a classic song of that first crush you always have. I
mean in the song I was fortunate enough to have that guy that was out of my league that I crushed
on to later be my boyfriend. So the song has a happy ending with it and happy memories of that
time.”
Are all the songs happy and positive? Are there different moods to the songs?
“Well as I said each song is slightly different to the other whether it be from the story behind it, the
mood, tempo, pitch. Everything is a little different from everything else, a bit like me. [laughs] But
yeah, ‘Sheer Perfection’ is a much more positive song compared to ‘Post’ which has a negative story
behind it so they contrast with one another. I think that there is an obvious balance between
positive and negative songs because nobody really wants an album completely fuelled on negative
emotions and nobody wants a completely positive album because nobody’s life is perfect or
shambolic, it’s always a balance.”
I completely agree with you there. So are you looking forward to your tour next year?
[smiling] Of course I am! I genuinely cannot wait to get on the road yet again. I mean the national
tours will seem miniscule to the show that coming up, I get to travel the world and live with a group
of amazing people for 4 months. It’s more than I could ever dream of! I get to perform in stadiums
that I’ve only ever dreamed of seeing, never mind being a headline act in them.”
2. When did you perform your first show? Do you have any ‘pre-show rituals’?
My first show was at the Sheffield motor point arena, I opened for The Arctic Monkeys at the
beginning of the year. I was so scared thinking that people weren’t going to like me and they were
just going to boo me off the stage but I was wrong. They asked for an encore, I was so shocked by
the response I got. ‘Pre-show rituals’? I have one or two, they’re a tad embarrassing. I basically listen
to old 90’s boy bands and dance around to get some energy going. I figure that if I look like an idiot
by dancing to ‘Backstreet boys’ then I shall be fine and cannot embarrass myself as much as that on
stage. [laughing] I also have a smoothie before I go onto the stage and I feel much livelier.
Oh gosh. [laughing] Do you look up to any other artists?
I listen to a lot of Bon Iver, Coldplay & I’ve recently started listening to LORDE. I love the acoustic and
minimalistic style and I don’t really like all this flashy pop electronic computer generated malarkey. I
realise that with a lot of these artists we’re similar from the deep lyrics and emotional factors behind
our songs. What really got me interested in performing is listening to musical theatre & listening to a
lot of Beatles and Bon Iver, I guess I’ve always had a soft spot for the unusual things in life.
What is it like being thrown into the public eye all of a sudden?
It’s fairly difficult, I can’t go to the shops with my mum without getting my photograph sneakily
taken and hassled which is…irritating. I guess it’s nice getting publicity but too much publicity is
ridiculous and proves to be gruelling. I hate that in some trashy magazines they slate your outfit
when you’re going out casually to the shop and they get photo of you in jeans and a baggy jumper, it
knocks my confidence down. I just want people to respect my privacy and my personalboundaries.
Well that genuinely understandable, it’s crazy! [laughs] Would you like to tell us when your next
album lands?
Yep, Visor will be on sale on the 10th of December and is avalible to pre-order at HMV & iTunes right
now.
Thank-you Rayne, it’s been great to meet you!
You too, thanks for having me.
