Food Justice And Food Retail
All food should be available to all people. The concept of this is dwelled on in the article, "Food
justice and Food retail in Los Angeles" by Mark Valliantos. Throughout the article, Valliantos
maintains the notion that healthy food should be within everyone's reach, yet inner cities are still
suffering from shortages of fresh produce. To see this issue in action, Valliantos documented this
reoccurring phenomenon in Los Angeles. The author gives a description of two areas within the city
of Los Angeles, and how they are economically divided based on the amount of healthy produce one
has at its disposal. He makes note of programs that already exist to help low income families receive
healthy foods that they could not afford. He also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lower income, however, has a very small supply of fresh produce at its disposal. Grocery stores
such as Wal–Mart are stationed in the lower income portion of the city because the store has a large
selection of lower priced goods. Agricultural workers such as famers would not sell their goods in
this area because their profit would be too low to even be considered profit. In most cases, the only
place to shop for food in the lower income portion of the city, are either convenient stores or liquor
stores. There are more fast food joints, than restaurants and local pop up stands barely sell anything
fresh. Not only is the city divided based on income, but its also due to race. The author makes note
of this when he addresses volatile events such as the Rodney King Riots. He then points out that
minorities suffer the most when it comes to fresh food availability. There are actions that are being
taken today, to help increase the number of supermarkets that are available in low inner city areas.
By appealing to ethos, Valliantos is able to get his point of view across to the reader. Throughout the
article, Valliantos uses ethos to describe how the Center for Food and Justice took over
responsibility for Project Café. He then uses this to cooperate with members of the community. By
being a part of the Center for Food and Justice organization, Valliantos is able to speak to the ethical
side of the

Los Angeles Riots Essay
The history of African–Americans in the United States is full of many periods of achievements, as
well as periods of struggle. The Los Angeles riots of 1992 were the result of many years of
systematic racism in the United States following the Civil Rights Movement. The beating and unjust
trial of Rodney King exposed the unfair and brutal treatment of African Americans by the police. As
well as the shooting of 15 year–old Latasha Harlins 2 weeks after the beating of Rodney King to
further ignite hatred within African–Americans in Los Angeles. What came forth was a week long
riot not only changed Los Angeles, but the United States. That is why the Los Angeles riots was the
most devastating, yet consequential, civil uproar in the history of the United States.
The beginnings of the riots came on March 3, 1991, when Rodney King was stopped and brutally
assaulted by police. King was stopped after a high speed chase police after police caught him
intoxicated and was subsequently forced out of the car (History.com). From there, police began to
unlawfully assault Rodney King, leaving him with a fractured skull, along with a broken cheekbone
(History.com). A witness, George Holliday, filmed the officers beating Rodney King; a day after the
tape was airing on CNN for the rest of the country to witness (Los Angeles Daily News). Four
officers were later arrested and put to trial a year later, however all of them were not pleaded guilty.
The verdict angered a massive amount of African

The Law Enforcement Profession Essay
The Law Enforcement Profession
Abstract
In order to understand comptemporary law enforcemment, we should recognize the conditions that
impact our profession. It is agreed upon by many scholars that major changes in law enforcement
occur every five years. Policing is sometimes characterize"... like a sandbar in a river, subject to
being changed continuously by the currents in which it is immersed..." (Swanson,
Territo and Taylor, p. 2). However, in recent years some major changes have occurred in a shorter
time period.

The results of an investigation disclosed that the McDuffie's death may have been caused by police
instead of an accident. After being indicted and found not guilty by an all white jury, riots broke out
in black neighborhoods, especially Liberty City resulting in arson and looting that left 18 persons
dead and more than 300 injured. This catastrophe forced the Miami Police
Department to reexamine and revise their use of force policies and procedures
(CQ Researcher, p. 645). The Jeffrey L. Dahmer Case characterize a situation when the police fail to
properly handle a call of a suspicous nature. Dahmer was charged with murdering at least 15 young
males. On May 27, 1993, two Milwaukee citizens reported a naked young male in the middle of the
street bleeding and unable to stand. The boy name was Konerak Sinthasomphone, a 14 year of
laotain boy.
Dahmer was able to persuade the officer that the boy was a live in lover. The boy was later slain by
Dahmer in his apartment after the officers left the scene. A storm of portest came from the minority
and homosexual communities accused the officers of displaying racial prejudice. The officers were
also criticized for dismissing the incident as "a boyfriend–boyfriend thing" (CQ Researcher, p.
637).
One of the most celebrated cases in recent times was the beating of a black motorist by several white
police officers in Los Angeles. It stirred nationwide concern about police brutality. On March 3,

Argumeative Effects Of The Los Angeles Riots
The Los Angeles Riots Argumentative Essay
How did the Los Angeles Riots help bring a change to the community and to the LAPD? Rodney
King was an African American motorist who inspired positive police reforms after he was brutally
beaten by four members of the LAPD. Rodney King had an impact on the lives of everyone. He was
an inspiration to most of the black African Americans. He was their voice.
The Los Angeles Riots were the second riots to happen after the Watts Riots. The L.A Riots took
place on April 9, 1992. The riots broke out in less than a day and lasted five days and killed more
than 50 people and left more than 2,000 injured. On April 30, 1992, writers Richard A. Serrano and
Tracy Wilkinson wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper saying "hours after the
verdicts were announced, angry demonstrators torched buildings, looted stores and assaulted
passersby as civic leaders pleaded for calm." The riots started after the verdict was given, people
were filled with anger after they police officers were acquitted of all charges against them. Tensions
also arose with Korean store owners.
The riots helped bring a change to the community for the African Americans because before the riots
they didn't have a voice, any protest or march they did didn't receive attention. When the riots
happened, they got the attention that they were searching for. The communities were said to be too
"poor" to care about them. In the article Sandy banks publish it said "The devastation was
heartbreaking, but I understood the rage behind it. Los Angeles had been building to this moment,
with years of protests, meetings, and marches that got little attention outside a black community
seemed too wretched and too poor to care about." Los Angeles was going to have a breakout sooner
or later due to the little attention put for the communities that were in need. The communities felt
that with Rodney King, they finally had a voice. For the community Rodney King was their voice
because of him the people started caring, everything started changing. Later in life they would not
be ignored anymore. The government and the people would focus more on them and not treat them
as bad as they had.

The LA Riots: Perception vs. Reality
The Los Angeles riots of 1992 was one of the largest scale riots in American history. Though the
riots started just hours after the infamous not guilty verdict in the Rodney King trial, there were
many factors that contributed to the anarchy created by certain members of the Los Angeles
community. The media's coverage of the trial and riots focused on the concept that the black

On April 29, 1992, a jury convened to try four LAPD officers for the beating and use of excessive
force against Rodney King, a black motorist involved in a high–speed chase with the police prior to
the incident. The beating occurred in March 1991 and had been videotaped by a witness. Within
days, every news channel in America was broadcasting the disturbing video in which King had been
kicked, tazed, and beaten over fifty times by the four officers with police batons (Sides). King had
offered little resistance after exiting his vehicle. The images of excessive force were printed across
all media channels, confirming complaints of police brutality against minorities, specifically by the
black community (Monroe). Subsequently, the black community became outraged and festered in
their anticipation of a guilty verdict for the four officers. After the trial was controversially moved to
the suburb community of Simi Valley, CA to avoid distraction from the heavily involved LA
community, the stage was set for a predictable, yet disastrous outcome. When the majority white
jury handed down the unanimous not guilty verdict, the Los Angeles community was stunned (Oh).
Just minutes after the jury's acquittal of the LAPD officers, protesters gathered at the Los Angeles
County Courthouse to protest the verdicts. Meanwhile, a group of black gang members in

Review Of Anna Deavere Smith 's ' Twilight ' Essay
In May of 1992, actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith was commissioned to write a one–
woman performance piece about the experiences, feelings, and tensions that contributed to and were
exacerbated by the 1992 Los Angeles riots.[1] For her work, Smith interviewed over 200 residents
of Los Angeles during the time of the riot. Her script consists entirely of the actual words of
members of the Los Angeles community as they reflect on their experiences surrounding the Los
Angeles riots. As Smith described in the introduction to her play, Twilight, which she later published
as a book, "I am first looking for the humanness inside the problems, or the crises."[2] She strived to
maintain a wide variety of perspectives, interviewing people from all walks of life: white, black,
Korean, Latino, poor, rich, police officers and gang members alike. Anna Deavere Smith 's play was
widely received as a brilliant work of theater. One New York Times reviewer, David Richards,
praised her performance saying, "She does people 's souls."[3] Anna Deavere Smith 's play Twilight
helps illuminate the thoughts and feelings of many diverse perspectives behind the racial tensions,
the perceived police brutality, and the lack of leadership for greatly needed urban renewal.
Combined with historical research, Twilight provides a meaningful examination of the underlying
causes of the Los Angeles riots. A longer historical view also reveals the larger class tensions and

On March 2, 1991, a brutal beating of a 26 year old man by the Los Angeles Police department, set
tensions high between the black community and the police department, not only in Los Angeles but
all across the country. This is not only considered an extremely controversial incident, but also a
contradicting case. Is it a coincidence, or has the justice system failed to charge and imprison police
officers who use excessive force on black members of society? By analyzing the incidents leading
up to this event, the actual evidence presented in the trial, and the police reports and conversations
post beating of Rodney King, it will be clear whether or not justice was served and how the results
of this trial affected the Los Angeles community, and policing in the U.S for years to come.
The Trials of Los Angeles Police Officers in connection with the beating of Rodney King is a
UMKC law report that analysis the background of the Rodney king incident, the trial and the
aftermath. On March 2, 1991, Rodney Glen King was at a friends house in Los Angeles watching a

they should go out for a drive, possibly to pick up girls. At around 12:30 that night, a married team

The Movie ' Scent Of A Woman '
Sometimes there are things in life we have to learn, wheather is by someone we don 't know or
things we have to see for ourselves. The movie, Scent of a woman played a big part in the example
of growing up, and becoming a man. There was a blind man by the name of Lieutenant Frank Slade,
and a high schooler named Charlie. What seemed like a short weekend job to earn some extra
money, became a moment that could change Charlie 's way of life forever, and the Lieutenant was
just the persson for him to experience this with. Charlie had no idea that the Lieutenant was
planning a trip to New York, so he went anyways. Scared and worried that he had to go back to
school to face a fear of getting expelled, he told the Lieutenant that he had a situation at school. See
Charlie wasn 't like the rest of the students at his school. The other students had money, and Charlie
was trying to get ahead to were he could be sucessful just like them at the school. Thats why he took
the job, he didnt have money like the rest of his friends did. Lieutenant showed him different aspects
of life before they left New York. They went out to eat at this fancy resturant, Charlie was
wondering why the lieutenant wanted to go to a fancy resturant and spend all his money. The
lieutenant taught him that money does 't keep you happy. Stating that he was 't happy hisself. So
why not enjoy that weekend of fun! Next they went to his brother house. To me he wanted Charlie

The Causes Of Police Brutality In America
Police brutality continues to be a major concern in society. It is a term used to describe the excessive
use of physical force, assault, verbal attacks or slurs, and threats by any law enforcement officer.
Efforts to police communities, throughout history, have been tainted by brutality and abuse of power
to some degree. The term police brutality is commonly used very loosely to any and all forms of
police misconduct. When in reality, the excessive force element of police misconduct is what clearly
defines police brutality and abuse.
During the 19th century there was a dominant white social class (Ku Klux Klan) that was against the
African–American people. They committed racial injustice through the police, which they were
willing to use violence against minorities. After the wars the violence immediately began to spread
through brutality in different situations. In America we have a history of police brutality trying to
reach a sense of law and order in this society. Police brutality come from the abuse of power granted
to police, however, I feel as if they are drawn they overreact due to panic. Although, officers seeing
that they are handling the situation well they are not looking at the scenario in a different
perspective; they don't realize that choking, beating, or killing somebody that is not an authority is
not going to affect society in some way. Most police officers feel that they are being "disrespectful"
by the people by, asking for badge numbers,

Research Paper On Police Brutality
Have you or anyone you know been harassed by police? For some people, police are looked at as
the protectors of our community, but for others they are the real criminals in society. According to
Encyclopedia.com police brutality is, "The use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to
accomplish a lawful police purpose." The existence of police brutality is becoming more of an issue
today. There have been many cases throughout history where citizens are severely injured or
murdered by police. Something has to be done to stop police brutality so that police do not forget
who they are paid to serve. The problem is police are specifically targeting citizens based on specific
race, gender, religious beliefs, class, and sexual orientation. Even though it is most common today,
police brutality has been around for years. Police brutality has taken place since police forces were
formed. In the early years of policing, acts of brutality were usually toward poor labor workers. The
Great Railroad Strike of 1877, the Pullman Strike of 1894, the Lawrence textile strike of 1912, the
Ludlow massacre of 1914, the Steel strike of 1919, and the Hanapepe massacre of 1924, shows
examples of how police beat poor workers. The Civil Rights Movement, The Vietnam War, and the
U.S. Industrial Revolution all had large acts of police brutality from the 20s to the 60s. Complaints
about police brutality are very common in nations where there are no laws about the use of
excessive force.

An Examination Of How Music Mirrors Societal Issues
An Examination of How Music Mirrors Societal Issues
Perspectives of Institutionalized Racism Although the United States government is currently
engaged in stopping foreign civil rights atrocities, it turns a blind eye to violence acted out against
African Americans within its borders (PR N., 2014, para. 4). In South Carolina, the "rebel flag
hang[s] from the state house walls" (Bryan, 1994, line 2), serving as a constant reminder of the
institutionalized racism that reflects U.S. social tensions today. Another discriminatory racial
injustice that occurred during the 1990s was the Anti–Drug Act of 1986. Possession of 5 grams of
crack (90% of crack defendants were African American) and 500 grams of powder cocaine (more
popular with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4). Not only is racial tension portrayed through brutality and violence, but it is also apparent in
various aspects of public education such as unfair character labeling, racial stereotypes, harsh school
punishments, and discrimination from teachers. These inequalities present in what is supposed to be
a "color blind" society create the notion that "America does not love [all] children" (Manzama,
2015, p. 11) and engender distrust in the education system. Moreover, impoverished minorities feel
a sense of resentment as a result of discrimination based on economic racism and injustice. These
minorities tend to rebel when they can no longer bear the weight of their anger and they believe the
sentiment favours change (Chavis, 2015, p. 4). Thus we discover that throughout the history of the
United States, racism has played a factor, ingraining its malicious effects into the moral fiber of
American Society.
Historical Perspectives
Several aspects of racial prejudice today, demonstrated in both police brutality and unjust treatment
of minorities, evidence atrocities that can be linked to a national history of violence and resentment
towards one another. To take racism back to when freedom seemed achievable is to travel back to
the Civil Rights Act of 1960s which sparked national controversy not exclusively in the South. The
modern interpretation of this backlash is most accurately portrayed in the movie Selma, in which

Race Based Hostility And Bias
Who Polices The Police?
"I can't breathe," imagine having to hear your father, son, or brother desperately gasp for air while
murmuring those words, "I can't breathe." It's heart wrenching, but now visualize him being
viscously choked from behind by a police officer. The predicament is startling and unseen. Your
loved one has surrendered but the officer has no intention of relinquishing his grip, restricting the
airway, making it incredibly difficult to breathe. Suddenly, the police officer forces your loved one's
motionless body to the ground, proceeding by mashing his face into the pavement. Slowly loosing
conscious, he lifelessly lays on the Staten Island concrete. Nobody performs CPR, not even the
ambulance upon their arrival. Your loved one is pronounced dead at the hospital, and the officer who
stole his life walks a free man.
Race–based hostility and bias is a major national issue affecting our democracy, and racial hostility
between minorities and the police is a significant societal problem (Police Traffic Stops and Racial
Profiling: Resolving Management, Labor, and Civil Rights Conflicts). These encounters are
becoming far too frequent. Eric Gardner is amongst one of the countless African Americans who
have been racially profiled and murdered by law enforcement. Allegations of excessive force by
police departments across the country continue to populate headlines more than twenty years after
the 1992 Rodney King incident (The Painful Legacy of Rodney King).

Chaos Of Los Angeles Riots / Civil Disturbance
Nancy Raya
Professor Jones

23, September 2016 Chaos in Los Angeles Many people believe the cause of the 1992 Los Angeles
riots/civil disturbance was due to the acquittal of four LAPD officers who had been charged with the
use of excessive force in the videotaped arrest and beating of Rodney King, following a high–speed
police chase. Many believed the verdict was unjust, that in fact excessive force was used in the
arrest. As a result, many feel this injustice caused the riots. When people take the time to do a more
in–depth review/research of the subject, they will find that although this verdict may have triggered
the rioting, there were actually multiple issues that contributed to the rioting. Dr. Eisold comments
in his article Understanding Why People Riot, "riots usually break out after a serious incident has
occurred, often after the commission of an injustice, or a perceived injustice, on the part of the
authorities." Some may interpret this as Eisold believing injustice or a perceived injustice causes
riots, but in taking a closer look we see it serves more as a trigger or igniter rather than a cause.
Eisold raises a question that supports this when he says, "would people with a genuine sense of
injustice destroy the property or endanger the lives of people in no way connected with the injustice
that is the supposed to be the occasion of the riot?" If this were the case, one would expect the riot to
be directed at officers involved or law

That was not enough for some officers they believed King was resisting arrest. Due to their belief
some cops shot Rodney with a taser gun. Shortly several officers started to fiercely beat King with

broadcasted not only across America but around the world. It would not be ignored by its viewers.
Everyone who tuned in and watched was shocked. Justice was expected to be made towards the

Professional Racism and Discrimination
The Los Angeles Police Department has a reputation for using race as a basis to catch criminals.
Racial profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for believing an individual is suspicious of
committing a crime. Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards people of color affects the justice
system and violates people's human rights. The LAPD continues to use racial profiling against
mostly African–Americans and Latinos. The use of racial profiling by the LAPD prevents the police
from serving the whole community. Because of the LAPD's neglect towards certain neighborhoods,
the neglect causes those communities to not trust or want to work with the police. Racial profiling
should not be used by the LAPD because it is immoral, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The results were 38% of Whites and 89%of Blacks thought the justice system was prejudiced
towards Blacks" (Chaney 483). The survey also showed that "8% of Blacks and 56% of Whites
thought the criminal justice system treated Blacks equally" (Chaney 483). The survey shows that
Blacks are less trusting of the justice system than Whites because of stereotypes and racial profiling.
Because the LAPD uses racial profiling, racial profiling causes Blacks to not want to work with
police because the LAPD is telling the African–American community that the LAPD does not trust
the African–Americans. When the LAPD uses racial profiling, it sends a message that Whites are
already assumed to be law–abiding citizens, whereas Blacks and Hispanics are assumed to be
associated with criminal activities. Although people may say that racial profiling is justified if it is
an effective way of catching criminals if race or ethnic characteristics help the police (Ryberg 79). In
other words, police will arrest more possible criminals. However, this causes police to search for
individuals who fit the profile and over look people who don't fit the profile. Because of police
targeting certain racial communities for certain crimes, the police–community relationship becomes
disrupted (Dunn 561–4). The disruption causes people to not want to cooperate with police if the
police are searching for suspects and the police need information. Racial Profiling is ineffective
because it only targets a

Short Story Of Using A Weapon In Prison

Eliezer Yudkowsky once said, "You are personally responsible for becoming more ethical than the
society you grew up in." This exact quote represents the initiative I plan on taking to promote social
justice. Though I have yet to make a humongous contribution to the progress of society, I am
steadily working towards it. The need for social justice is everywhere due to the acts of injustice that
people, primarily minorities, face everyday. This includes police brutality, racism, and
discrimination. That being said, action must be taken and I will do my part by starting in my own
community – Atlanta,GA. On July 7th, 2016, Michael George Smith Jr. was found hanging from a
tree in Piedmont Park. Police ruled his death as a suicide, but of course everyone, including myself,
suspected foul play. In addition to Michael's death, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were both
killed earlier that week. Both whom were unarmed and not disturbing any peace, yet were still shot
and killed by the police. In response to all three of their deaths, protests erupted throughout
downtown Atlanta. The day of the protest, my grandma and I were both watching the news, seeing
everything that was happening. In the midst of us watching the news, she mumbled "damn, 50 years
later and ain't none changed". It then began to dwell on me that when it comes to police brutality,
protesting has not changed anything. Even back in 1992, when the LA riots occurred after the

April 29th, 1992. A jury in Ventura County acquitted four white Los Angeles Police Department
officers of brutally beating Rodney G. King, an unarmed African–American motorist. The riots that
followed over the next five days left more than 50 people dead, more than 2,000 injured, and nearly
12,000 arrested (Los Angeles Riots Fast Facts). My father, James Webster, was a witness to these
riots.
"On March 3, 1991, paroled felon Rodney King led police on a high–speed chase through the streets
of Los Angeles County before eventually surrendering. Intoxicated and uncooperative, King resisted
arrest and was brutally beaten by police officers Laurence Powell, Theodore Briseno, and Timothy
Wind" ("Riots Erupt in Los Angeles"). The incident was caught on video, and is still viewable on
YouTube.
The 81–second video featured the LAPS officers repeatedly delivering baton blows, kicking King
until he fell to the ground. To say that they just "beat" him is a severe understatement. The video
also captured King cowering on the concrete, and attempting to crawl away, but to no avail, as the
police officers swarmed around him. Rodney King was beaten inches from death. "Its images have
been seared into the minds of viewers the world over who have watched the tape broadcast
repeatedly" ("The L.A. Riots, 25 Years Later").

Rodney King 1992: A Summary And Analysis
On April 29th, 1992, after four white police officers were found to be innocent in the brutal beating
of Rodney King, a young black man, the city of Los Angeles erupted in wild chaos and riots that
resulted in the death of 53 people, with thousands more injured and in billions of dollars in damage
to the city (Dickerson, 2015). The riots were a result of growing tensions between the south Los
Angeles community and the police force, due to the high racial profiling and brutality experienced
by African Americans and other minorities in the area. These tensions were triggered when a
videotape was broadcast of Rodney King being beaten brutally by four white police officers aster an

Many of the businesses in South Central Los Angeles and the nearby Koreatown, where the riots
occurred, were primarily owned or run primarily by Koreans. During the riots, of the 4,500 stores
destroyed, 2,300 were primarily Korean owned or run. Nearly every building in Koreatown incurred
some sort of damage. The community was one of the hardest hit during the riots as thousands of
Korean Americans lost their livelihoods and their primary source of income (Sang–Hee Lee, 2015).
Following the aftermath of the riots, many looked where to place the blame for the most devastating
racial unrest in the country. The then republican President, George H.W. Bush, suggested that the
riots were due to the social welfare programs created by Democrats in the 1960's. But, Bill Clinton,
then Democratic Presidential Nominee hopeful, refuted the White Houses' claims and said that the
riots were a results of 12 years of denial and neglect by the Bush and Reagan administrations that
led to festering social problems and racial tensions in communities across America (Pear,

Persuasive Essay On Police Brutality
Police brutality is the extreme misconduct against civilians by police officers by ways of ranging
from beating, sexual abuse, killing, and harassing (BRITANNICA). Although, police officers are
given jurisdiction to use discretion on their reason and use of force, some officers take advantage of
their limits and exercise excessive force. It is inappropriate and unacceptable for a uniformed police
officer to unnecessarily harm citizens (HUFF POST). Police brutality of a defenseless citizens can
lead to protests, riots, and public outrage. When tensions occur, complaints by citizens are often
never investigated due to law enforcement's desire to cover up the mistreatment and because police
brutality is difficult to prove depending on the scenario. The case of Rodney King, racial
discrimination, NFL protests, body cameras, excuses, and the September 11th terrorist attacks were
all affected by the misconduct and violence brought upon by police brutality. Rodney King was an
African–American man whose beating by the Los Angeles police officers was videotaped and
displayed to all of the United States. He was involved in a high–speed car chase when police
officers, Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, and Stacey Koon, forcefully pulled
him from his car and violently beat him. The trial was held in Simi Valley, a primarily white
community, and obtained a jury of no African–American members (BIOGRAPHY). The jury's
decision was to acquit the officers which activated the

The creation and inception of Twilight follows very shortly after the Rodney King verdict in 1992.
An important event leading up the riots in 1992 is when "On March 3, 1991, an African–American
motorist, Rodney King, was pursued for speeding" (Jacobs 1239). A total of twenty–one police
officers pursued him. Once they tracked him down, "King was severely beaten down by three white
LAPD police officers as a sergeant and and the remaining 17 officers looked on" (Jacobs 1329). As
King was beaten, a man named George Holliday proceeds to videotape and record the incident; such
a recording becomes available to the public striking outrage in the community. This had been one of

Police Brutality And Its Perception Of Excessive Force
Most people in the United States understand that there are occurrences of police brutality, although
the episodes of such brutality is minute in comparison to what is perceived to be the case by the
general population. Police brutality is a perception of excessive force, though depending on the
situation, that very force may in fact be the use of proper force. When it comes to Americans
receiving their knowledge of current event, they usually refer to the media, in which a major topic
today is police brutality.
A Case Study Reference On March 3rd 1991, Los Angeles Police chase a vehicle that was driving
erratically. When the vehicle came to a stop after reaching speeds of nearly 120 mph, a total of four
cruisers arrived to the scene, including six patrol officers and a sergeant. Of those officers were
Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, Theodore Briseno, Rolando Solano, Tim and Melanie Singer, and
Sergeant Stacey Koon. (Linder 2001) In the car that was speeding was three subjects later identified
as Allen and Freddie Helms and driver Rodney King. The Helms brothers complied with officers
commands and where apprehended with out incident. Rodney King on the other hand was rather
difficult, by not listening to commands by officers and being comical. After a hassle of getting out of
the vehicle, officers approached King in the prone with caution fearing he was on a known drug at

Racial Discrimination
Race today is crucial because there is still prejudices against black communities or people of color.
One major issue that is caused through racial discrimination is police brutality. There have been
racial profiling reports that have resulted to and created problems such as looting, civil lawsuits that
are taken to court, and excessive media attention. In many of these cases, the victims are African
American. Most reports on the news detail a story about an African American who has been a victim
of police brutality. In many of these cases, police officers claim that the victims posed a threat or
were a danger to their own well being.
Moreover, one example that led to looting was the Rodney Glen King case which was about an
American taxi driver who became nationally known after being beaten by Los Angeles Police
Department officers following a high–speed car chase on March 3, 1991. The police attempted to
pull him over in Lake View Terrace in the San Fernando Valley after he was caught speeding at 110
mph. He led the police on a short pursuit because he knew being pulled over would violate his
parole for a prior robbery. The police claimed that he was resisting arrest once he was pulled over.
They claimed that they believed he was on drugs, although he was not. The police proceeded to beat
Rodney King severely for about 15 minutes, resulting in skull fractures, broken bones and teeth, and
permanent brain damage. In the end, 53 people were killed, most of all were the

steers people towards ignorance. Quarreling amongst citizens of the United States is not an
uncommon occurrence, especially when the topic focuses on racial backgrounds and biases. The LA
Riot of 1992 is no exception to this category of discourse. A black person beaten up by a group of

Although the violence that day was severe and did not particularly benefit LA financially nor
socially, this day marked a change from the culture of hate and stereotypes to eventually understand
and quell the tensions in backgrounds. There is a necessity to contemplate on explosive events like
the LA Riots in order to not repeat the same mistakes. Otherwise, how could the United States of
America be associated with "unison" when the government and citizens raise hell over colors of the
skin? There are still hate crimes brewing in this country of freedom and a tone of animosity on the
political stage that is even present in every day news channels. The LA Riot of 1992 is only a single
event. However, the outcomes brought mixed reviews. On one hand, the Riot revitalizes the
minority communities to stand up against oppression.

The King Case Of Rodney King
One of the examples of how the media can play a role in court cases is the Rodney King case.
Rodney King(King), a black man living in Los Angles, California who was on parole for a robbery
conviction and two friends were driving west on Interstate 210, on the night of March 3,1991, when
California Highway Patrol officer spotted his care speeding down the Interstate. The officers
attempted to pull King over, but King refused to pull over, resulting in a high–speed chase (Koon
1996) King then exited the freeway and the high–speed pursuit continued surface streets. By this
time the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) had join the pursuit with several police cars and
helicopters in the air. King was finally stopped at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Osborne
Street. Once King came to a stop, CHP Officer Timothy Singer and his wife, CHP Officer Melanie
Singer then ordered the occupants under arrest. The two passengers were placed in the back of a
police car. King would not get come out of the car, when he did finally came out of the car he was
acting very weird, gigging, hitting the ground with his hands and then waving up to the helicopters.

From the perspective of law, excessive physical force most clearly constitutes police brutality, a
term often applied loosely to various forms of police misconduct (Holmes, 2000). Over the years,
police brutality continues to be an issue of concern all across the world and the need for reducing
law enforcement from engaging in this unethical behavior is imperative. Although, police
organizations throughout the United States have responded by tightening their "physical force",

Professionally, the rookie officer potentially could damage his career before it even began. He could
also be bullied or harassed for violating the "code of silence" among officers. Not to mention, an
accusation of any wrong doing will forever remain on his record and he could possibly be assigned
to desk duties.
All officers involved in the beating and tasing of the suspect abused their power, but even more so
the Sergeant whose job is to display exemplary ethical behavior. His job is to teach good ethics by
his actions and discourage moral impurity and police misconduct. Police brutality is a reoccurring
issue in the United States that we face in society. There is not enough training offered for police
officers to gain throughout their career. The implementations of refresher courses are essential in
helping to reduce unethical behavior/police misconduct. The training should consist of posing
different scenarios involving police misconduct and how they should respond when faced with an
ethical dilemma. It is therefore recommended that law enforcement be required to obtain ethical
training over the course of their career. More emphasis needs to be placed on the relevance of ethical
behavior especially when it involves law enforcement.

The Watts Riots The Watts Riots erupted on the backdrop of simmering racial tensions in the United
States. There were many varied long term causes for the eruption of the riot that rocked Watts and
the surrounding areas, but the immediate cause of the riot was routine police work – police

The Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, was predominantly black and racial tension had reached a

American cities (History.com). In the aftermath of the riot there were three major outcomes. One,
the McCone Commission was set up by the government to study the riots. The McCone
Commission found that people rioted because of unemployment, bad schools and education, and
prior instances of police brutality (www.southcentralhistory.com). A second outcome following was
an independent commission, chaired by former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, that investigated the
causes of the rioting. The Kerner Commission issued its landmark report in 1968, concluding: "Our

The Rodney King Trial And Verdict
We are fools to think racism is something of the past. Racism is very much alive in this century as it
was in the last century. The Rodney King trial and verdict will forever be identified as a moment in
recent history that outraged the diverse residents of Los Angeles County and the rest of America.
Not only did it expose the police brutality African Americans endure, but it showed the
discrimination of a jury mostly made of white people. My family lived in Los Angeles during the
late 80's and into the 90's, and they still remember how dangerous walking in the streets was during
those years. The police did not only discriminate African Americans, they also victimized Mexican
Americans. The Rodney King trial and verdict of 1992 generated riots across Los Angeles after four
police officers accused of beating King were acquitted. The verdict revealed the unjust racial
treatment towards African Americans and it became a symbol of police brutality and injustice that is
still seen today. Rodney King was a black motorist who was beaten and arrested by four white
police officers in Los Angeles on March 3, 1991. The policemen were unaware of being filmed
until, George Holliday, captured the beating on videotape from his apartment window and released it
to the press (Alexander, Jacobs, and Seidman, 2000). This incident was not a shock to individuals
living in the Los Angeles County as it was common to be victimized by policemen. The difference

Critical Race Theory and the Rodney King Case
In reviewing the article, Canadian Critical Race Theory, I found that the author, Carol Aylvard,
raises some very interesting as well as disturbing questions on the nature of racism within the realm
of police enforcement. In looking through the lens of the Rodney King case, we are provided with a
very specific example of how the issue of race was dealt with, or not dealt with within the LAPD
and judicial system. To gain a clearer understanding of how race was a major issue in this case but at
the same time not confronted on the front lines, Alyvard highlights several aspects of the case. In the
1991 state trial of the four police officers accused of beating Rodney King, the prosecution did ...

Furthermore, " The problem of police misconduct was not an exception or an aberration; it was
systematic, an old 'family secret' in the LAPD. (Gibbs 1996). To add insult to injury, the federal
government still not introduce the issue of race when it stepped in after the riots and charged the
four police officers with violating King's civil rights. It is also critically pointed out that two of the
officers were acquitted in federal court, and the two that were convicted, only received very minimal
sentences of 30 months imprisonment and a waiver of any fines. As well, In comparing these
sentences to four Black men involved in the attack on white motorist Reginald Denny, we are able to
see several startling differences.
While under Title 18 of U.S. federal civil rights statutes, sections 241 and 242, prosecutors can seek
an indictment for a violation of civil rights in the cases of police misconduct, to do so would require
a heavy legal burden of proof. A burden that many state prosecutors do not have to meet for many
other criminal charges. As Aylvard points out, " The requirement of a proof of specific intent to
violate particular federal rights will perhaps flush out only the most shocking violations, leaving the
more subtle cases of discrimination and racism to remain undisputed, unchecked." (p. 64). The
significance of the Rodney King case seems to be due, at

History Is Repeating Itself By James Baldwin
History is Repeating Itself
Introduction
Over the past few years, there have been multiple cases involving what some claim to be police
brutality. The past couple of years have had incidents reminiscent of the sixties. Racial tensions have
risen and numerous ongoing riots have broken out. There has been fires and lootings and such due to
these riots. The question is, is America going back in time? In December of 2014, a monthly
magazine called "The Progressive" republished an article written by James Baldwin addressed to his
nephew. This article had been written in 1962 during the civil rights movement. The words, the
message, James Baldwin conveys in it apply just as much to America today as it did then.
Concluding that America is repeating itself, especially when regarding the relationship between the
police and people of color.
The 1900s In the 1900s, the civil rights movement was in full swing, and police brutality and riots
were common occurrences. By going back in time, one can see the comparisons between racial
tensions then and now to see that America is repeating history. There is a continuous cycle of police
brutality, african americans protesting and rioting, which then leads to more police brutality. The
Detroit Race Riot of 1967 is an excellent example of this. This riot was "an immediate response to
police brutality" (Wang 1). A curfew was placed on Detroit after ongoing violence that day, and
"seven minutes into the curfew a 16–year–old African American

Civil Rights And Social Integration Of African Americans
During the 20th century there were numerous riots, protests, and boycotts fighting for the equality
and social integration of African–Americans. Some of the stories of individuals endeavoring for
their freedom have gone down in history–resulting in laws being altered, regulations being revised,
and unimaginable boundaries being broken. Sadly, in order to establish justice in this world,
violence and death usually occur due to conflicting ideals. In Southern Los Angeles, even after
African–Americans were issued their "Civil Rights," underlying racism constructed barriers such as
"racial restrictive covenants" that ensured that blacks were still not welcome there. The two biggest
social disturbances that have taken place in the West have taken place in Los Angeles–where
unemployment, overcrowding, poverty, and segregation have become increasingly prevalent. The
first of these social disturbances is the Rodney King riot of 1992 and the second is the Watts riot of
1965. The racial bigotry, which was backed by the racial restrictive covenants and racial
discrimination of LAPD throughout Southern Los Angeles; as well as the events that sparked the
Rodney King riot and the Watts riot; clearly illustrate the racial segregation and the overall struggle
that African–Americans faced during the 20th century. Between 1910 and 1920 in what is
commonly known as the Great Migration among 300,000 and 1,000,000 African–Americans made
their way toward northern cities to try and escape the

Food Justice And Food Retail

  • 1. Food Justice And Food Retail All food should be available to all people. The concept of this is dwelled on in the article, "Food justice and Food retail in Los Angeles" by Mark Valliantos. Throughout the article, Valliantos maintains the notion that healthy food should be within everyone's reach, yet inner cities are still suffering from shortages of fresh produce. To see this issue in action, Valliantos documented this reoccurring phenomenon in Los Angeles. The author gives a description of two areas within the city of Los Angeles, and how they are economically divided based on the amount of healthy produce one has at its disposal. He makes note of programs that already exist to help low income families receive healthy foods that they could not afford. He also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lower income, however, has a very small supply of fresh produce at its disposal. Grocery stores such as Wal–Mart are stationed in the lower income portion of the city because the store has a large selection of lower priced goods. Agricultural workers such as famers would not sell their goods in this area because their profit would be too low to even be considered profit. In most cases, the only place to shop for food in the lower income portion of the city, are either convenient stores or liquor stores. There are more fast food joints, than restaurants and local pop up stands barely sell anything fresh. Not only is the city divided based on income, but its also due to race. The author makes note of this when he addresses volatile events such as the Rodney King Riots. He then points out that minorities suffer the most when it comes to fresh food availability. There are actions that are being taken today, to help increase the number of supermarkets that are available in low inner city areas. By appealing to ethos, Valliantos is able to get his point of view across to the reader. Throughout the article, Valliantos uses ethos to describe how the Center for Food and Justice took over responsibility for Project Café. He then uses this to cooperate with members of the community. By being a part of the Center for Food and Justice organization, Valliantos is able to speak to the ethical side of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Los Angeles Riots Essay The history of African–Americans in the United States is full of many periods of achievements, as well as periods of struggle. The Los Angeles riots of 1992 were the result of many years of systematic racism in the United States following the Civil Rights Movement. The beating and unjust trial of Rodney King exposed the unfair and brutal treatment of African Americans by the police. As well as the shooting of 15 year–old Latasha Harlins 2 weeks after the beating of Rodney King to further ignite hatred within African–Americans in Los Angeles. What came forth was a week long riot not only changed Los Angeles, but the United States. That is why the Los Angeles riots was the most devastating, yet consequential, civil uproar in the history of the United States. The beginnings of the riots came on March 3, 1991, when Rodney King was stopped and brutally assaulted by police. King was stopped after a high speed chase police after police caught him intoxicated and was subsequently forced out of the car (History.com). From there, police began to unlawfully assault Rodney King, leaving him with a fractured skull, along with a broken cheekbone (History.com). A witness, George Holliday, filmed the officers beating Rodney King; a day after the tape was airing on CNN for the rest of the country to witness (Los Angeles Daily News). Four officers were later arrested and put to trial a year later, however all of them were not pleaded guilty. The verdict angered a massive amount of African ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Law Enforcement Profession Essay The Law Enforcement Profession Abstract In order to understand comptemporary law enforcemment, we should recognize the conditions that impact our profession. It is agreed upon by many scholars that major changes in law enforcement occur every five years. Policing is sometimes characterize"... like a sandbar in a river, subject to being changed continuously by the currents in which it is immersed..." (Swanson, Territo and Taylor, p. 2). However, in recent years some major changes have occurred in a shorter time period. Innovations in law enforcement During the past two decades, I have observed major changes in the viewpoint of society towards police officer's as the symbol of trust and dignity, the technological advances of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The results of an investigation disclosed that the McDuffie's death may have been caused by police instead of an accident. After being indicted and found not guilty by an all white jury, riots broke out in black neighborhoods, especially Liberty City resulting in arson and looting that left 18 persons dead and more than 300 injured. This catastrophe forced the Miami Police Department to reexamine and revise their use of force policies and procedures (CQ Researcher, p. 645). The Jeffrey L. Dahmer Case characterize a situation when the police fail to properly handle a call of a suspicous nature. Dahmer was charged with murdering at least 15 young males. On May 27, 1993, two Milwaukee citizens reported a naked young male in the middle of the street bleeding and unable to stand. The boy name was Konerak Sinthasomphone, a 14 year of laotain boy. Dahmer was able to persuade the officer that the boy was a live in lover. The boy was later slain by Dahmer in his apartment after the officers left the scene. A storm of portest came from the minority and homosexual communities accused the officers of displaying racial prejudice. The officers were also criticized for dismissing the incident as "a boyfriend–boyfriend thing" (CQ Researcher, p. 637). One of the most celebrated cases in recent times was the beating of a black motorist by several white police officers in Los Angeles. It stirred nationwide concern about police brutality. • 8. Argumeative Effects Of The Los Angeles Riots The Los Angeles Riots Argumentative Essay How did the Los Angeles Riots help bring a change to the community and to the LAPD? Rodney King was an African American motorist who inspired positive police reforms after he was brutally beaten by four members of the LAPD. Rodney King had an impact on the lives of everyone. He was an inspiration to most of the black African Americans. He was their voice. The Los Angeles Riots were the second riots to happen after the Watts Riots. The L.A Riots took place on April 9, 1992. The riots broke out in less than a day and lasted five days and killed more than 50 people and left more than 2,000 injured. On April 30, 1992, writers Richard A. Serrano and Tracy Wilkinson wrote an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper saying "hours after the verdicts were announced, angry demonstrators torched buildings, looted stores and assaulted passersby as civic leaders pleaded for calm." The riots started after the verdict was given, people were filled with anger after they police officers were acquitted of all charges against them. Tensions also arose with Korean store owners. The riots helped bring a change to the community for the African Americans because before the riots they didn't have a voice, any protest or march they did didn't receive attention. When the riots happened, they got the attention that they were searching for. The communities were said to be too "poor" to care about them. In the article Sandy banks publish it said "The devastation was heartbreaking, but I understood the rage behind it. Los Angeles had been building to this moment, with years of protests, meetings, and marches that got little attention outside a black community seemed too wretched and too poor to care about." Los Angeles was going to have a breakout sooner or later due to the little attention put for the communities that were in need. The communities felt that with Rodney King, they finally had a voice. For the community Rodney King was their voice because of him the people started caring, everything started changing. Later in life they would not be ignored anymore. The government and the people would focus more on them and not treat them as bad as they had. The African American community had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The La Riots : Perception Vs. Reality Juan Trillo EN 101–40 Prof. Grace von Moritz Due: 04/17/2016 The LA Riots: Perception vs. Reality The Los Angeles riots of 1992 was one of the largest scale riots in American history. Though the riots started just hours after the infamous not guilty verdict in the Rodney King trial, there were many factors that contributed to the anarchy created by certain members of the Los Angeles community. The media's coverage of the trial and riots focused on the concept that the black community had reached their boiling point, and was now rebelling in protest of police brutality against them. News broadcasts selectively displayed images of blacks mobbing, looting, and terrorizing Korean–owned businesses, while giving little justification for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On April 29, 1992, a jury convened to try four LAPD officers for the beating and use of excessive force against Rodney King, a black motorist involved in a high–speed chase with the police prior to the incident. The beating occurred in March 1991 and had been videotaped by a witness. Within days, every news channel in America was broadcasting the disturbing video in which King had been kicked, tazed, and beaten over fifty times by the four officers with police batons (Sides). King had offered little resistance after exiting his vehicle. The images of excessive force were printed across all media channels, confirming complaints of police brutality against minorities, specifically by the black community (Monroe). Subsequently, the black community became outraged and festered in their anticipation of a guilty verdict for the four officers. After the trial was controversially moved to the suburb community of Simi Valley, CA to avoid distraction from the heavily involved LA community, the stage was set for a predictable, yet disastrous outcome. When the majority white jury handed down the unanimous not guilty verdict, the Los Angeles community was stunned (Oh). Just minutes after the jury's acquittal of the LAPD officers, protesters gathered at the Los Angeles County Courthouse to protest the verdicts. Meanwhile, a group of black gang members in ... • 12. Review Of Anna Deavere Smith 's ' Twilight ' Essay In May of 1992, actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith was commissioned to write a one– woman performance piece about the experiences, feelings, and tensions that contributed to and were exacerbated by the 1992 Los Angeles riots.[1] For her work, Smith interviewed over 200 residents of Los Angeles during the time of the riot. Her script consists entirely of the actual words of members of the Los Angeles community as they reflect on their experiences surrounding the Los Angeles riots. As Smith described in the introduction to her play, Twilight, which she later published as a book, "I am first looking for the humanness inside the problems, or the crises."[2] She strived to maintain a wide variety of perspectives, interviewing people from all walks of life: white, black, Korean, Latino, poor, rich, police officers and gang members alike. Anna Deavere Smith 's play was widely received as a brilliant work of theater. One New York Times reviewer, David Richards, praised her performance saying, "She does people 's souls."[3] Anna Deavere Smith 's play Twilight helps illuminate the thoughts and feelings of many diverse perspectives behind the racial tensions, the perceived police brutality, and the lack of leadership for greatly needed urban renewal. Combined with historical research, Twilight provides a meaningful examination of the underlying causes of the Los Angeles riots. A longer historical view also reveals the larger class tensions and the massive fluctuation of ethnic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Police Report On The Los Angeles Police Department BMCC Ashley Chaparro Policing Research Paper On March 2, 1991, a brutal beating of a 26 year old man by the Los Angeles Police department, set tensions high between the black community and the police department, not only in Los Angeles but all across the country. This is not only considered an extremely controversial incident, but also a contradicting case. Is it a coincidence, or has the justice system failed to charge and imprison police officers who use excessive force on black members of society? By analyzing the incidents leading up to this event, the actual evidence presented in the trial, and the police reports and conversations post beating of Rodney King, it will be clear whether or not justice was served and how the results of this trial affected the Los Angeles community, and policing in the U.S for years to come. The Trials of Los Angeles Police Officers in connection with the beating of Rodney King is a UMKC law report that analysis the background of the Rodney king incident, the trial and the aftermath. On March 2, 1991, Rodney Glen King was at a friends house in Los Angeles watching a basketball game and drinking beer. King suggested to his two friends, Allen and Freddie Helms that they should go out for a drive, possibly to pick up girls. At around 12:30 that night, a married team of police officers, husband and wife, Tim and Melanie singer decided to chase a speeding car going up to 117 miles per hour. This car was Rodney Kings. Charlie had no idea that the Lieutenant was planning a trip to New York, so he went anyways. Scared and worried that he had to go back to school to face a fear of getting expelled, he told the Lieutenant that he had a situation at school. See Charlie wasn 't like the rest of the students at his school. The other students had money, and Charlie was trying to get ahead to were he could be sucessful just like them at the school. • 18. The Causes Of Police Brutality In America Police brutality continues to be a major concern in society. It is a term used to describe the excessive use of physical force, assault, verbal attacks or slurs, and threats by any law enforcement officer. Efforts to police communities, throughout history, have been tainted by brutality and abuse of power to some degree. The term police brutality is commonly used very loosely to any and all forms of police misconduct. When in reality, the excessive force element of police misconduct is what clearly defines police brutality and abuse. During the 19th century there was a dominant white social class (Ku Klux Klan) that was against the African–American people. They committed racial injustice through the police, which they were willing to use violence against minorities. After the wars the violence immediately began to spread through brutality in different situations. In America we have a history of police brutality trying to reach a sense of law and order in this society. Police brutality come from the abuse of power granted to police, however, I feel as if they are drawn they overreact due to panic. Although, officers seeing that they are handling the situation well they are not looking at the scenario in a different perspective; they don't realize that choking, beating, or killing somebody that is not an authority is not going to affect society in some way. • 20. Research Paper On Police Brutality Have you or anyone you know been harassed by police? For some people, police are looked at as the protectors of our community, but for others they are the real criminals in society. According to Encyclopedia.com police brutality is, "The use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose." The existence of police brutality is becoming more of an issue today. There have been many cases throughout history where citizens are severely injured or murdered by police. Something has to be done to stop police brutality so that police do not forget who they are paid to serve. The problem is police are specifically targeting citizens based on specific race, gender, religious beliefs, class, and sexual orientation. Even though it is most common today, police brutality has been around for years. Police brutality has taken place since police forces were formed. In the early years of policing, acts of brutality were usually toward poor labor workers. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877, the Pullman Strike of 1894, the Lawrence textile strike of 1912, the Ludlow massacre of 1914, the Steel strike of 1919, and the Hanapepe massacre of 1924, shows examples of how police beat poor workers. The Civil Rights Movement, The Vietnam War, and the U.S. Industrial Revolution all had large acts of police brutality from the 20s to the 60s. Complaints about police brutality are very common in nations where there are no laws about the use of excessive force. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. An Examination Of How Music Mirrors Societal Issues An Examination of How Music Mirrors Societal Issues Perspectives of Institutionalized Racism Although the United States government is currently engaged in stopping foreign civil rights atrocities, it turns a blind eye to violence acted out against African Americans within its borders (PR N., 2014, para. 4). In South Carolina, the "rebel flag hang[s] from the state house walls" (Bryan, 1994, line 2), serving as a constant reminder of the institutionalized racism that reflects U.S. social tensions today. Another discriminatory racial injustice that occurred during the 1990s was the Anti–Drug Act of 1986. Not only is racial tension portrayed through brutality and violence, but it is also apparent in various aspects of public education such as unfair character labeling, racial stereotypes, harsh school punishments, and discrimination from teachers. These inequalities present in what is supposed to be a "color blind" society create the notion that "America does not love [all] children" (Manzama, 2015, p. 11) and engender distrust in the education system. Moreover, impoverished minorities feel a sense of resentment as a result of discrimination based on economic racism and injustice. These minorities tend to rebel when they can no longer bear the weight of their anger and they believe the sentiment favours change (Chavis, 2015, p. 4). Thus we discover that throughout the history of the United States, racism has played a factor, ingraining its malicious effects into the moral fiber of American Society. Historical Perspectives Several aspects of racial prejudice today, demonstrated in both police brutality and unjust treatment of minorities, evidence atrocities that can be linked to a national history of violence and resentment towards one another. To take racism back to when freedom seemed achievable is to travel back to the Civil Rights Act of 1960s which sparked national controversy not exclusively in the South. The modern interpretation of this backlash is most accurately portrayed in the movie Selma, in which Martin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Race Based Hostility And Bias Who Polices The Police? "I can't breathe," imagine having to hear your father, son, or brother desperately gasp for air while murmuring those words, "I can't breathe." It's heart wrenching, but now visualize him being viscously choked from behind by a police officer. The predicament is startling and unseen. Your loved one has surrendered but the officer has no intention of relinquishing his grip, restricting the airway, making it incredibly difficult to breathe. Suddenly, the police officer forces your loved one's motionless body to the ground, proceeding by mashing his face into the pavement. Slowly loosing conscious, he lifelessly lays on the Staten Island concrete. Nobody performs CPR, not even the ambulance upon their arrival. Your loved one is pronounced dead at the hospital, and the officer who stole his life walks a free man. Race–based hostility and bias is a major national issue affecting our democracy, and racial hostility between minorities and the police is a significant societal problem (Police Traffic Stops and Racial Profiling: Resolving Management, Labor, and Civil Rights Conflicts). These encounters are becoming far too frequent. Eric Gardner is amongst one of the countless African Americans who have been racially profiled and murdered by law enforcement. Allegations of excessive force by police departments across the country continue to populate headlines more than twenty years after the 1992 Rodney King incident (The Painful Legacy of Rodney King). ... • 32. Chaos Of Los Angeles Riots / Civil Disturbance Nancy Raya Professor Jones English 1A 23, September 2016 Chaos in Los Angeles Many people believe the cause of the 1992 Los Angeles riots/civil disturbance was due to the acquittal of four LAPD officers who had been charged with the use of excessive force in the videotaped arrest and beating of Rodney King, following a high–speed police chase. Many believed the verdict was unjust, that in fact excessive force was used in the arrest. As a result, many feel this injustice caused the riots. When people take the time to do a more in–depth review/research of the subject, they will find that although this verdict may have triggered the rioting, there were actually multiple issues that contributed to the rioting. Dr. Eisold comments in his article Understanding Why People Riot, "riots usually break out after a serious incident has occurred, often after the commission of an injustice, or a perceived injustice, on the part of the authorities." Some may interpret this as Eisold believing injustice or a perceived injustice causes riots, but in taking a closer look we see it serves more as a trigger or igniter rather than a cause. Eisold raises a question that supports this when he says, "would people with a genuine sense of injustice destroy the property or endanger the lives of people in no way connected with the injustice that is the supposed to be the occasion of the riot?" If this were the case, one would expect the riot to be directed at officers involved or law ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Racial profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for believing an individual is suspicious of committing a crime. Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards people of color affects the justice system and violates people's human rights. The LAPD continues to use racial profiling against mostly African–Americans and Latinos. The use of racial profiling by the LAPD prevents the police from serving the whole community. Because of the LAPD's neglect towards certain neighborhoods, the neglect causes those communities to not trust or want to work with the police. The survey also showed that "8% of Blacks and 56% of Whites thought the criminal justice system treated Blacks equally" (Chaney 483). The survey shows that Blacks are less trusting of the justice system than Whites because of stereotypes and racial profiling. Because the LAPD uses racial profiling, racial profiling causes Blacks to not want to work with police because the LAPD is telling the African–American community that the LAPD does not trust the African–Americans. When the LAPD uses racial profiling, it sends a message that Whites are already assumed to be law–abiding citizens, whereas Blacks and Hispanics are assumed to be associated with criminal activities. Although people may say that racial profiling is justified if it is an effective way of catching criminals if race or ethnic characteristics help the police (Ryberg 79). In other words, police will arrest more possible criminals. However, this causes police to search for individuals who fit the profile and over look people who don't fit the profile. Because of police targeting certain racial communities for certain crimes, the police–community relationship becomes disrupted (Dunn 561–4). The disruption causes people to not want to cooperate with police if the police are searching for suspects and the police need information. Within days, every news channel in America was broadcasting the disturbing video in which King had been kicked, tazed, and beaten over fifty times by the four officers with police batons (Sides). The images of excessive force were printed across all media channels, confirming complaints of police brutality against minorities, specifically by the black community (Monroe). After the trial was controversially moved to the suburb community of Simi Valley, CA to avoid distraction from the heavily involved LA community, the stage was set for a predictable, yet disastrous outcome. This exact quote represents the initiative I plan on taking to promote social justice. Though I have yet to make a humongous contribution to the progress of society, I am steadily working towards it. The need for social justice is everywhere due to the acts of injustice that people, primarily minorities, face everyday. This includes police brutality, racism, and discrimination. That being said, action must be taken and I will do my part by starting in my own community – Atlanta,GA. On July 7th, 2016, Michael George Smith Jr. was found hanging from a tree in Piedmont Park. In addition to Michael's death, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were both killed earlier that week. Both whom were unarmed and not disturbing any peace, yet were still shot and killed by the police. In response to all three of their deaths, protests erupted throughout downtown Atlanta. The day of the protest, my grandma and I were both watching the news, seeing everything that was happening. • 53. Persuasive Essay On Police Brutality Police brutality is the extreme misconduct against civilians by police officers by ways of ranging from beating, sexual abuse, killing, and harassing (BRITANNICA). Although, police officers are given jurisdiction to use discretion on their reason and use of force, some officers take advantage of their limits and exercise excessive force. It is inappropriate and unacceptable for a uniformed police officer to unnecessarily harm citizens (HUFF POST). Police brutality of a defenseless citizens can lead to protests, riots, and public outrage. When tensions occur, complaints by citizens are often never investigated due to law enforcement's desire to cover up the mistreatment and because police brutality is difficult to prove depending on the scenario. The case of Rodney King, racial discrimination, NFL protests, body cameras, excuses, and the September 11th terrorist attacks were all affected by the misconduct and violence brought upon by police brutality. Police Brutality And Its Perception Of Excessive Force Most people in the United States understand that there are occurrences of police brutality, although the episodes of such brutality is minute in comparison to what is perceived to be the case by the general population. The LA Riot of 1992 is only a single event. However, the outcomes brought mixed reviews. On one hand, the Riot revitalizes the minority communities to stand up against oppression. ... • 63. The King Case Of Rodney King One of the examples of how the media can play a role in court cases is the Rodney King case. Rodney King Turnitin gave a grade of 4% similarity. | Unethical Behavior of Police Brutality | Ethical Behavior In Criminal Justice | | Yasmen Sarter | 11/18/2012 | This paper is to the best of my ability. | From the perspective of law, excessive physical force most clearly constitutes police brutality, a term often applied loosely to various forms of police misconduct (Holmes, 2000). Over the years, police brutality continues to be an issue of concern all across the world and the need for reducing law enforcement from engaging in this unethical behavior is imperative. Although, police organizations throughout the United States have responded by tightening their "physical force", policies and reminding their officers to use ... He could also be bullied or harassed for violating the "code of silence" among officers. Not to mention, an accusation of any wrong doing will forever remain on his record and he could possibly be assigned to desk duties. All officers involved in the beating and tasing of the suspect abused their power, but even more so the Sergeant whose job is to display exemplary ethical behavior. His job is to teach good ethics by his actions and discourage moral impurity and police misconduct. Police brutality is a reoccurring issue in the United States that we face in society. There is not enough training offered for police officers to gain throughout their career. The implementations of refresher courses are essential in helping to reduce unethical behavior/police misconduct. The training should consist of posing different scenarios involving police misconduct and how they should respond when faced with an ethical dilemma. It is therefore recommended that law enforcement be required to obtain ethical training over the course of their career. More emphasis needs to be placed on the relevance of ethical behavior especially when it involves law enforcement. Works Cited Feagin, J., Herman, V., & Batur, P. (2000). White Racism. Los Angeles. • 67. Watts Riot Research Paper Yola Halpert Professor Ottina CRJ 102: Intro to Policing May 5, 2016 The Watts Riots The Watts Riots erupted on the backdrop of simmering racial tensions in the United States. There were many varied long term causes for the eruption of the riot that rocked Watts and the surrounding areas, but the immediate cause of the riot was routine police work – police responding to a call of a concerned citizen worried about a man driving his car erratically. The Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, was predominantly black and racial tension had reached a breaking point when two white policemen stopped, Marquette Frye, a black motorist whom they suspected of drunken driving on the evening of August 11, 1965. A crowd of spectators gathered near the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the victims were killed by the LAPD and the National Guard (www.southcentralhistory.com).The Watts riot was the worst urban riot in 20 years and foreshadowed the many rebellions to occur in the years that followed in Detroit, Newark, and other American cities (History.com). In the aftermath of the riot there were three major outcomes. One, the McCone Commission was set up by the government to study the riots. The McCone Commission found that people rioted because of unemployment, bad schools and education, and prior instances of police brutality (www.southcentralhistory.com). A second outcome following was an independent commission, chaired by former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, that investigated the causes of the rioting. The Kerner Commission issued its landmark report in 1968, concluding: "Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white –– separate and unequal" (www.cnn.com). Another major outcome was the creation of SWAT teams. They were created with the vision of three police officers: Officer Nelson, who originally came up with the concept of a specially equipped and highly trained unit, Inspector Gates, who spear headed the push to make it happen and Ed Davis had the foresight to approve the program. The term SWAT was coined by Gates and originally stood for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. The Rodney King Trial And Verdict We are fools to think racism is something of the past. Racism is very much alive in this century as it was in the last century. The Rodney King trial and verdict will forever be identified as a moment in recent history that outraged the diverse residents of Los Angeles County and the rest of America. Not only did it expose the police brutality African Americans endure, but it showed the discrimination of a jury mostly made of white people. My family lived in Los Angeles during the late 80's and into the 90's, and they still remember how dangerous walking in the streets was during those years. The police did not only discriminate African Americans, they also victimized Mexican Americans. The Rodney King trial and verdict of 1992 generated riots across Los Angeles after four police officers accused of beating King were acquitted. The verdict revealed the unjust racial treatment towards African Americans and it became a symbol of police brutality and injustice that is still seen today. Rodney King was a black motorist who was beaten and arrested by four white police officers in Los Angeles on March 3, 1991. The policemen were unaware of being filmed until, George Holliday, captured the beating on videotape from his apartment window and released it to the press (Alexander, Jacobs, and Seidman, 2000). This incident was not a shock to individuals living in the Los Angeles County as it was common to be victimized by policemen. The difference in Rodney King's case with other ... • 71. London Riots In this essay, I will be proposing a suitable research method to identify the causes of the 2011 London Riots that took place between the 6th August and the 10th August, which resulted in lawlessness – chaos, looting, arson, attacks, etc. My aim is to determine why the riots happened, so that such violence can be prevented in the future. I will do this using scientific methodology and choose the most appropriate method for my research. Firstly, a summary of the Experimental Method. It originates from a research question, but you could say the idea behind the question is derived from intuition. This leads to a hypothesis, which is "the initial building block in the scientific method." Source: (Bradford, A. (2015) – www.livescience.com) A hypothesis ... Source: (Research Methods in Psychology – www.study.com) There are a few different types of survey methods, one of them being questionnaires. Questionnaires can be printed onto paper, then handed out to people and posted through their doors, or they can be accessible through the internet – sent to people via email or completed as an online questionnaire. An advantage of this is "it allows minimal contact between the researcher and the participant." The telephone surveys or the web surveys are more convenient for participants to complete, in the comfort of their own home, or on the go, as long as they are very brief, with only a few questions asked. However, it is very easy to lie or exaggerate, especially if you're not directly in the presence of the interviewer. This is where face– to–face interviews come in – a direct way of obtaining information, with the interviewer asking the participant questions. Also, if you are using random sampling, you can easily select and ask random people on the road to take part in your survey, avoiding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Los Angeles Riots Case Study Introduction In this new decade where political correctness trumps common sense, civil unrest often leads to violent unrest. Los Angeles Riots On March 3, 1991, Rodney King, an African American taxi driver on parole for a robbery conviction, led two California Highway Patrol Officers, Tim and Melanie Singer (husband and wife) on a high speed chase on the freeway in Los Angeles, California. He had been drinking King refused to pull over and reached high speeds. He later said that this was because he didn't want to get in trouble for violating his parole. During the chase, King drove at speeds from 55 to 88 miles per hour and several police cars and a helicopter joined the pursuit. Rodney King was cornered, along with his two passengers ... • 75. Critical Race Theory and the Rodney King Case Essay Critical Race Theory and the Rodney King Case In reviewing the article, Canadian Critical Race Theory, I found that the author, Carol Aylvard, raises some very interesting as well as disturbing questions on the nature of racism within the realm of police enforcement. In looking through the lens of the Rodney King case, we are provided with a very specific example of how the issue of race was dealt with, or not dealt with within the LAPD and judicial system. To gain a clearer understanding of how race was a major issue in this case but at the same time not confronted on the front lines, Alyvard highlights several aspects of the case. In the 1991 state trial of the four police officers accused of beating Rodney King, the prosecution did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, " The problem of police misconduct was not an exception or an aberration; it was systematic, an old 'family secret' in the LAPD. (Gibbs 1996). To add insult to injury, the federal government still not introduce the issue of race when it stepped in after the riots and charged the four police officers with violating King's civil rights. It is also critically pointed out that two of the officers were acquitted in federal court, and the two that were convicted, only received very minimal sentences of 30 months imprisonment and a waiver of any fines. As well, In comparing these sentences to four Black men involved in the attack on white motorist Reginald Denny, we are able to see several startling differences. While under Title 18 of U.S. federal civil rights statutes, sections 241 and 242, prosecutors can seek an indictment for a violation of civil rights in the cases of police misconduct, to do so would require a heavy legal burden of proof. A burden that many state prosecutors do not have to meet for many other criminal charges. As Aylvard points out, " The requirement of a proof of specific intent to violate particular federal rights will perhaps flush out only the most shocking violations, leaving the more subtle cases of discrimination and racism to remain undisputed, unchecked." (p. 64). The significance of the Rodney King case seems to be due, at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. History Is Repeating Itself By James Baldwin History is Repeating Itself Introduction Over the past few years, there have been multiple cases involving what some claim to be police brutality. The past couple of years have had incidents reminiscent of the sixties. Racial tensions have risen and numerous ongoing riots have broken out. There has been fires and lootings and such due to these riots. The question is, is America going back in time? In December of 2014, a monthly magazine called "The Progressive" republished an article written by James Baldwin addressed to his nephew. This article had been written in 1962 during the civil rights movement. The words, the message, James Baldwin conveys in it apply just as much to America today as it did then. Concluding that America is repeating itself, especially when regarding the relationship between the police and people of color. The 1900s In the 1900s, the civil rights movement was in full swing, and police brutality and riots were common occurrences. By going back in time, one can see the comparisons between racial tensions then and now to see that America is repeating history. There is a continuous cycle of police brutality, african americans protesting and rioting, which then leads to more police brutality. The Detroit Race Riot of 1967 is an excellent example of this. This riot was "an immediate response to police brutality" (Wang 1). A curfew was placed on Detroit after ongoing violence that day, and "seven minutes into the curfew a 16–year–old African American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 79. Civil Rights And Social Integration Of African Americans During the 20th century there were numerous riots, protests, and boycotts fighting for the equality and social integration of African–Americans. Some of the stories of individuals endeavoring for their freedom have gone down in history–resulting in laws being altered, regulations being revised, and unimaginable boundaries being broken. Sadly, in order to establish justice in this world, violence and death usually occur due to conflicting ideals. In Southern Los Angeles, even after African–Americans were issued their "Civil Rights," underlying racism constructed barriers such as "racial restrictive covenants" that ensured that blacks were still not welcome there. The two biggest social disturbances that have taken place in the West have taken place in Los Angeles–where unemployment, overcrowding, poverty, and segregation have become increasingly prevalent. The first of these social disturbances is the Rodney King riot of 1992 and the second is the Watts riot of 1965. The racial bigotry, which was backed by the racial restrictive covenants and racial discrimination of LAPD throughout Southern Los Angeles; as well as the events that sparked the Rodney King riot and the Watts riot; clearly illustrate the racial segregation and the overall struggle that African–Americans faced during the 20th century. Between 1910 and 1920 in what is commonly known as the Great Migration among 300,000 and 1,000,000 African–Americans made their way toward northern cities to try and escape the ...
