Homeless Life In The Homeless
Growing up, I was fortunate to live a comfortable life. My parents were both college educated and
had well–paying jobs at Boeing in St. Louis. My three siblings and I lived in a good neighborhood
in one of the top school districts in the state, and we had everything we needed: three meals every
day, our supplies for school, and the ability to take part in sports and other extra–curricular activities
throughout the year. Living in that neighborhood, however, skewed my view of how the world
worked. While I understood that there were people who were homeless and struggled just to get one
meal each day, I didn't comprehend the sheer amount of people, just in St. Louis alone, who fell into
that category. When I was about 7 or 8 though, a group of us from our church visited a homeless
shelter to bring food. Our goal was to help out in any way we could as part of a community service
day we had established. Because of the culture shock I experienced upon arriving, visiting that
homeless shelter for the first time changed my view of the world by informing me of the homeless
epidemic in the United States, and changed my mindset to give back to people less fortunate.
Like any young kid going through life, I wanted the world! If my friends got a new gaming system
or a new toy, I had to have it as well. And like any young kid, when my parents said no, I thought it
was the end of the world. To me, that was a huge injustice; my friends could get new games

Homeless Essay
Homeless People have an image of what homeless people should be, I didn't fit these descriptions! I
didn't have the messy hair, or the torn clothes, but that all changed! I had only been homeless a long
time now, and I had tried my hardest to keep my clothes clean and clean myself. But I couldn't keep
up with the standards I was setting for myself. It's a lot harder than people think! Imagine suddenly
being chucked out of your home and not knowing what to do. I don't know anyone that could handle
it, well, I actually don't know anyone anymore, all my friends, my family turned their backs on me,

I went to go get her, but Gary ran over to me and told me to stay if I wanted more fun! Of course I
did, so I stayed! Gary took me over to a deserted part of the beach and started to kiss me, things got
heated. It was so romantic, I wasn't going to stop it from happening, so I went with it. Do I regret
that day? Definitely! Well it happened, I can't change that can I! Too late now, I wish I had known
the trouble it had caused. I went back to school on Monday, as happy as I thought possible and went
over to see Gary, I ran up behind him and whispered in his ear, he turned around, called me a slut,
all his friends laughed and walked off, I burst into tears and ran away, they laughed harder, chanting
slut slut slut! I couldn't face being in school, not now. I went to find Kathy, she turned her back on
me, in a weekend my life had been turned upside down. Ruined! I ran away, ran home. No one was
in, they were all working! I ran up to my room crying, didn't know what to do, I couldn't face going
back, so I got a pad of paper. I wrote on my desk what had happened and I packed my bags. I
wouldn't be gone long, well I thought I wouldn't. So I left! Didn't look back. I walked for hours that
day, no where to go so I just went! Walked, aimlessly. Before I knew it, hours had gone. I felt bad,
so I walked home. I stood outside my house, looking in the window. I saw my

Runaway and Homeless Youth
Homelessness is a real serious health issue all over the world that must be addressed. A lot of people
in a public frequently misunderstand the cause of homelessness. Remarks regarding homeless
people such as "they need to just get a job" or "go to school" are normally used liberally by
members of society because they neglect to look at the complete issue. Homelessness does not
discriminate. Individuals that have previously experience or may experience being homeless can be
from different regions, have different cultural backgrounds, ages, and could be of any gender.
Minorities seem to be mostly affected by homelessness. A study done in 2012 found that the
homeless population is consisted of 39% non–Hispanic Whites, 42% ... Show more content on

NINELINE received 8,176 crisis calls.
Acercatel (Mexico helpline) received 4,775 crisis calls.
Covenant House received a three–star charity rating from Charity Navigator, America's premier

for the community like The Covenant House. "Home away from Home" is a homeless shelter for
youths, children, and runaways between the ages 13 – 20 that have been emancipated. The program

Empathy For Homeless People
People do not show enough empathy towards people who unfortunately are homeless they show
compassion but don't do anything to make a difference for them. Empathy is sharing the same
emotions and feelings towards another person. Because of the lack of empathy of homeless people,
society is not empathetic enough. Obviously there's a lack of empathy for homeless people because
they're not fortinet. Three to seven of those cities are in america. And in Salt Lake, Utah they held a
4 hour meeting, a couple weeks later mayor Troy Walker brang up he wanted to invite two new
homeless shelter into the area. The community responded in a childish manner as a homeless man
named Lawrence Horman stood on stage the stage telling about himself and what he had to go thru
being homeless as he was asking for support and help and said "we'll help ... Show more content on

So people walk past and could careless or forget about putting effort to get these people off the
streets. People should not shame someone asking for help and trying to do better people don't have
enough empathy because if they did they would consider how the homeless and feel and try to
understand how it would be in there shoes if people have did have enough empathy they wouldn't
boo or be against people that are unfortunate with little to no money some of them have kids and if
there child they wouldn't want the community to be against them. As the united states we should
own up to the reputation be build.
We don't show enough empathy like the boy in this video "persectalces". At first this high schooler
walk past a boy sitting on the ground trying to write in his note book with a long face the high
school boy look at him and walks past. So people in this generation don't understand just by giving
someone a piece a food or a shelter could help then in the long run in life and can them look at the

Homeless In San Francisco
Homeless in San Francisco San Francisco has a large population of homeless people. San Francisco
is the 13th most populated city and is the eighth worst city homeless rate with estimated 7,000
homeless in 2015. There are many factors that can result in the high number of homeless people.
One of the most common reasons why is they could not get a job and they just decided to give up so
they don't have enough money to do anything. I think there is a lot of homeless because we live in a
competitive world and there is bigger demand on jobs than there is supply of it. It is also in San
Francisco where the Super Bowl is held once a year. The Super Bowl is annual championship game

The Homeless Are Homeless : A Middle Class Lifestyle After...
Maxwell and Erin were living a middle class lifestyle after marriage. After a year of marriage, taxes
and bills began to catch up to them. Maxwell lost his job and Erin became pregnant. By the time
their child was one year old their house was foreclosed, cars and valuable possessions were sold for
money just to be able to eat for the next month. Living on the streets moving from shelter to shelter
they were barely getting the nutrition that is needed to survive. So many people can end up homeless
from children, to adults, and even veterans. According to Doran, fifteen percent of America's
homeless are chronically homeless, which means the person has been homeless continuously for a
year or more or has had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years (Doran). The
reason there are so many homeless people now in the country is because of a very punitive and
moralistic societal value we have about people who are homeless and in desperate need.
(Tsemberis). The government should provide more adequate shelter because child homelessness is at
an all time high in the United States, mental health issues are more common among homeless
people, veteran homelessness is increasing throughout the United States. One in every 50 American
children experiences homelessness, according to a new report that says most states have inadequate
plans to address the worsening and often–overlooked problem ("1 and 50 children experience
homelessness" 1). The problem of homelessness

The Stigma Of The Homeless
During the Great Depression, the homeless were almost glamorized as vagabonds who rode the rails
with their belongings neatly tied up in a bandana over their shoulder. Today, the homeless can be
anyone: children or women escaping an abusive relationship or those who just cannot afford to pay
for housing. While some homeless people maintain employment of some sort, long term
homelessness is usually a function of the inverse; either severely under–employed or no income
stream at all with which to pay rent and utilities. While quite a bit of academic research has shown
the need to focus on societal causes of homelessness, people who are homeless seem to be
increasingly perceived and treated within a paradigm of individual sickness. While ... Show more

National estimates suggest that nearly 2 million youth experience homelessness (Rhodes, Wine &
Rice, April 2014) and that between 5–25% of those have some sort of pet. While it appears that pet
ownership may contribute to a wide range of benefits, this also presents conflicts that arise within
the homeless population. Homeless respondents also have stated that the general public tends to
treat them better or are more likely to talk to them because of their pets, with the pets acting as
"social facilitators" (Ibed). Pet ownership can strike such a strong emotional chord within a
homeless person that it has been found within research that had not specifically focused on pet
ownership within the homeless community have identified pets as a self–reported barrier to having
access to social support mechanisms. This attachment to their pets are many times so strong that
they (homeless) would sacrifice personal healthcare and other social services if no one was available
to care for their pet while utilizing said treatment (J. Wasserman and J. Clair, 2010).
Studying the comparison between people helping the homeless with a pet, rather than helping the
homeless that doesn't, is important because it

Homeless Problem
Homeless people are those that cannot maintain regular, secure and adequate housing. They are on
the side of streets, looking for ways to earn money and provide for themselves and their families.
The underprivileged and poor health is exceedingly interconnected. Poverty arises from political,
social and economical inequalities. Poverty leads to one becoming sick because of the lack of
sanitation, poor nutrition, making the choice of putting health at risk to provide for their family.
Poor health in turn traps communities in poverty. Residing in overcrowded and poor conditions
contribute to the spread of diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia. There are 2,291

children aged 13 years old to 18 years old is family conflict over sexual orientation. A 2007 report
from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) states that 26% of gay teens who open up
to their parents or guardians are told they much leave their home. LGBT youth also leave home due
to physical, sexual and emotional abuse (Smithee). In another research in 2014, the Covenant House
reported 66% of the youth were African American, 57% male, 43% female and 92% were 18 to 20

You lose control of the smallest things, such as where you will sleep. Reports have concluded that
the majority of people with family or children on the streets with them, state not having control and
the power to determine whether their child will have a warm/dry place to sleep and food in their

Homelessness And The Homeless Community
We have all seen it before. The man sitting on the cold street possessing only a few rudimentary
goods while begging for food or the woman holding her child's hand while asking for spare change.
Some people saunter by these downtrodden individuals unconcerned, while others give them
sympathetic looks and drop a few coins in their cups. We are aware of homelessness, almost too
aware and yet we go on with our lives without further regard. Homelessness has become such an
epidemic in the United States that it is normal and practically expected to be seen in our urban
streets. Homelessness is defined by the Merriam–Webster dictionary as, "Having no home or
permanent residence." While that is true, there are many other dynamics that come into play with
this social problem. Without proper housing, the homeless community is more susceptible to
violence, disease, weather conditions, hunger and ultimately death. We all recognize homelessness
but what can we do to help those in need? Having grown up less than an hour away from San
Francisco, my family would make frequent trips to the city. In the city, encountering victims of
homelessness is inevitable. In my younger years I could not help myself and would stare at these
people which was usually followed by me asking my parents questions like, "Why is that man
sleeping on the ground?". Though these questions were laced in innocence, they still hold
significance today. Why is homelessness so prevalent and what are we doing as a

Observation On Homeless Women
Observations
There is no one face, look or reason to homelessness. The women here are all different:
backgrounds, marital status, age, race, sexual orientation, education and income levels. The status of
"homeless" does not discriminate. Attitudes, emotional maturity, perspective on life and everything
in between differs with the women of CrossRoads.
Women are complex individuals in general. Homeless women are a completely different creature.
They are prideful, boundaryless and have no sense of standing on your own and not blaming others
for their own situations. As if they almost seem to enjoy living out of a Rubbermaid tote and having
nothing to show for their lives. The women that I interacted with were no exception. The dynamic at
the shelter is interesting. All the women try to "mother" the children; someone ultimately emerges as
the "leader", and; everyone enjoys the drama that accompanies different personalities. The one I was
surprised to learn was that CrossRoads is truly "just" a homeless shelter. The focus is not to
rehabilitate, diagnose, offer social work service. It is simply a shelter, a place to sleep and eat a
meal.
I didn't know what to expect my first night as a volunteer. I was a bit nervous, wondering if I would

Compare And Contrast Homeless People And The Homeless
Have you ever thought of how privileged many of us are? Or what life would be like if everything
was taken away from us? As of 2016, more than 169 people were homeless in Jackson, Michigan.
This number isn't going down. With Jackson's many homeless inhabitants, there are also over 338
children in the foster care system just in our county alone. When comparing homeless people and
foster care children, they are very similar. Both of them do not have a permanent home and both
have nothing to hope for in the future. As many of you know, Jackson isn't the largest county in the
world. Something has to be done to help these people. We should not rest until everyone is safe and

Most of these kids cannot find a proper home to take care of them or even adopt them in the near
future. The only things that they bear are maybe one outfit and a few things that they carry around in
a tattered grocery bag. This isn't the child's fault. This isn't the parents fault. This is our fault for not
stepping up and taking action when we hear cries of help from these children. Since no one in
Jackson County is willing to bring these hurting kids into their homes and help take care of them,
they are sent off to boarding schools that are in the northern part of Michigan. Not only are they torn
away from the only things they know, but they are also taken away from where they grew up. These
kids experience great pain almost everyday of their life. Most of the children think it is their fault.
They think that "no one wants me" or "I'm not important." These kids feel like they lost the battle to
the world that would do anything to tear them apart. These kids feel like they lost hope that they
once had and now somehow perished in the wind. These kids feel like they can do it on their own
and will never need anyone else's help. Help is just the thing that these overwhelmed children need.
They need a roof over their heads, a meal every night on the dining room table, and a family that is

Proposal For Homeless Essay
Kaila Rose ENGLISH 1102 Mr. Charles Farmer October 17, 2017 A Proposal to Less Homelessness
A person without a home, and therefore living on the streets is defined as homeless. America has
numbers of homeless people living without a home or starving from hunger. The solution to this
problem would be the United States providing homeless people with permanent, affordable housing,
and wraparound services. Permanent supportive housing will resolve this issue for our country.
Shelters can be beneficial in providing beds and roofs to people who don't have them, especially on
those cold and rainy nights where sleeping outside could be lethal for some. However, shelters are
unbelievably expensive to function. The average monthly cost of helping a family ... Show more

It can be tremendously effective at serving the chronically homeless get off the streets and stay
stable. This is what's called a housing–first approach, frequent studies have found it is much more
effective than depending on shelters. This benefits homeless people in long–term housing without
inquiring them to get sober or hang onto a job first. Once they are settled in a stable home, they gain
access to services such as drug and alcohol treatment, an assigned social worker, or job training.
They do not have to take advantage of those services, but most people do choose to do so. Several
people who need permanent supportive housing are fighting mental problems or drug and alcohol
manipulation, and would have ended up in institutions. Isolating those homeless people from the rest
of society is like institutionalizing them, and it violates the law. Some housing developments
provide both permanent supportive housing and low–income housing, so that homes can be made
available to larger amounts of the population. This kind of mixed–use housing helps create
communities. This includes, single moms living in affordable housing aiding ex–cons living in
supportive housing, and vice versa. This and other experiences suggest that integrating supportive
and low–income housing can be

Homeless And Homelessness
–The word homeless is used to describe a person without a home, and therefore typically living on
the streets. Homelessness is described as part of a vicious circle that is difficult for many to escape.
–More temporary shelters and rehabilitation sessions to help individuals find employment should be
provided to assist the homeless in recovering their previous life.
–Many homeless individuals, especially the young, have fallen victim to a complex mesh of social,
economic and mental disadvantages. In 2009, a study by social researchers in Melbourne's RMIT

Homeless Minors
In the past couple of years, the number of homeless individuals have been on the rise in Nevada. In
this mass increase, the population mostly consists of homeless individuals under the age of eighteen.
These minors are mostly unaccompanied, with no adults to teach them right or wrong. Being
homeless and on the streets, it gives the minors less chances in life and it also influences them to act
out negatively in society. The number of homeless teens have been skyrocketing and the problem is
that with the amount we have now it might be hard to control in the future. In Clark County, there
has been a vast increase in the number of homeless individuals. The number of homeless people has
increased from 7,443 to 7,509 in the past year. (Amaro). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The homeless minors have no one to look up to as a role model and have limited amounts of
resources. This can result in the minors doing deviant actions such as stealing. In the past month,
there has been many cases of young adults and minors breaking into neighborhood houses and
robbing families. Around a month ago, there was a situation that I witnessed where this young teen
was going around a neighborhood stealing items from various houses. During that time, I was also
notified that these types of situations have been occurring a lot recently. Aside from this incident, a
couple months back a teen went into my aunt's shop and attempted to steal some of her belongings.
This problem not only affects society, but mainly the minors who are committing these crimes.
Whether or not these homeless individuals do the right thing or the wrong they still get punished for
being homeless. "All they want to do is pass you along, so they can get on to their next problem. A
lot of the time if you are homeless they would arrest you for basically being homeless" (Elko Daily
Free Press). This can result in the teens having negative influences throughout their most
impressionable times in their life. Being exposed to such environments at a young age will affect
their ways as they grow older. The minors who are homeless usually do not have efficient amounts
of resources for them to use. Even though, there

The Homeless Of Our Society
At this very moment I'm sure that no one in this speech class would imagine being homeless within
the next month or two. However, sometimes life can be unpredictable, and for many people the
unexpected strikes out of nowhere. Contrary to what most people assume, those that are homeless
are usually just ordinary people going through a difficult stage in life. The homeless of our society
from my perspective are overlooked to an extent of rotting the core of our communities. A person is
deserving of shelter, food, water and other commodities as long as they are of value to society.
Those who are less similar to the majority are moderately comprehended while the majority is
organized in resemblance to a chronological list where the amount success determines the amount of
burdens one would carry. Yet to fall out of this majority could be as simple as skin color, age or even
height are factors that seemingly repel you from becoming part of the majority. Taking these things
into deep consideration I decided to do two things for my outside event; I spoke with my uncle who
currently has nowhere to live and I traveled downtown to Sulzbacher Center Homeless for the day.
My mother has requested that my uncle remain anonymous, so with respect to her we shall address

A Research On The Homeless Population
1. In your text on pages 208–209, the author discusses his research on the homeless population. He
refers to the many routes one can take to become homeless. Choose two populations from his list
that you think might work in your career as a human service professional. Describe two possible
interventions or tasks that you might be involved with in working with each population. What are
some of the general skills a human services professional might need to work with these populations?
There are many types of homelessness in our society and our community. They become homeless
for different reasons; it could be intentional or uncontrolled. The two that stick out the most for my
community are the push outs and the new poor. The push outs are people who are kicked out by
their parents, commonly teenagers; or families and adults who are evicted from landlords. The new
poor are when people become unemployed due to work skills are out–of–date because of
technological changes. Some skills that are needed to help each one of these groups is to meet their
current needs. As addressing the needs of the homeless it is important to focus on prevention, as
well as, remediation of their problem ("What is human service," 2011). As human service
professionals should listen to their clients. When a client is speaking the clinician should pay
attention, provide support, empathy, assessing, and goal setting.

Homeless Child Education : Homeless Children
Homeless Children Education Several factors severely compromise the ability of homeless children
to succeed in school, as I discovered in interviews with 277 homeless families in New York City in
1988. Barriers to the success of these children include health problems, hunger, transportation
obstacles, and difficulty obtaining school clothes and suppliesâ€"all of which are linked to low
attendance rates (Rafferty and Rollins 1989). Other factors are associated with the nature of the
emergency shelter system, the mobility that follows the loss of the home, and barriers that inhibit
access to schools and to various school services. Sadly, there is no right to shelter in the United
States. Even when families successfully obtain emergency shelter, other obstacles prevail.
Placements are often made without regard to community ties or educational continuity. For example,
the 1989 study by Rafferty and Rollins showed that 71 percent of homeless families with school–
age children were sheltered in areas far removed from their original homes. Many had been
frequently bounced between facilities. In many cases, each transfer to a different shelter requires a
transfer to a new school, and each transfer means the loss of valuable school days. In addition, the
noisy environment and constant flow of traffic typical of many shelters make it difficult for children
to do their homework or get enough sleep. Project SAFE does not stop there. Family assistants

Homeless People And The Homeless Essay
Think about what it is like, not knowing where you will end up sleeping tonight, or when your next
meal or shower is going to be, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness there were
about 600,000 homeless people in America in January of 2015. This paper will hopefully spread
insight on homelessness as a whole. There are many misconceptions about homeless people and
many facts that people do not realize about homeless people. These facts should be brought to
attention in order to help increase the knowledge of what normal everyday individuals can do to
help. Every day we are surrounded by someone who is homeless and we don't even know it. People
tend to have a false interpretation of what a homeless person looks like, the reasons for them
becoming homeless, and even how to help them.
There are many different factors that cause people to become homeless. The leading causes of
homelessness in America are not having enough affordable housing, a lack of income,
unemployment, poverty, and domestic violence. The reason people can become homeless can be the
result of one specific event which occurs, or it could be due to a kind of snowball effect which
occurs, where one small event leads to another and then another, until the end result is not having a
house anymore. While interviewing Katrina Knight, the executive director of Good Shephard Center
for the Homeless, she gave me a good example of this. "In a situation where a couple splits up and

I currently live in a city with a large and very diverse population. At one end of the city, you will see
large expensive homes with little to no violence, but on the other end, you see homes that are
deteriorating as time passes by along with gun violence almost every night. These are the places
where you see more homeless shelters and others begging for food and money. These are the people
that suffer on the streets in the cold every night while we scroll through Facebook on our comfy
couch. According to NJ.com, Hudson County was the home of "829 homeless persons" in 2016, the
third largest homeless population in the state of New Jersey. While we enjoy the comfort of our
home, these unfortunate people have to live outside during subzero

The Media Of The Homeless
Homelessness is so prevalent in our society that many people have become socially and morally
numb to the issue. As homelessness worsens, the homeless are being seen less and less as humans
and more as a nuisance such as pests and wildlife, or even just a statistic. Being at the bottom of the
social class structure is rough, to put it lightly. There is nothing glamorous about living at the streets;
in fact, there are very few positive points, if any, to being homeless but that doesn 't mean they are
that much different from other classes. At the core, they are still people trying to do better, just like
everyone else in the higher classes. Diana Kendall, author of Framing Class: Media Representations
of Wealth and Poverty in America speaks in great detail about the many ways that the media
portrays the homeless in news or articles. The media frames homelessness at best, sympathetically –
as if they are "in need of our pity," and at worst they show those who are considered chronically
homeless as representatives of the whole homeless community (Kendall 4). Homelessness has
always been depicted in a negative way. Many old stories and fables tell of the homeless, in the best
way, as simple beggars who can not survive without the charity and good will of more prosperous
people. In more negative ways, they are depicted as being lazy or having an addiction of some sort
which lead to their lot in life. Because there is such a variation in the character and circumstances

Being Homeless
Being homeless is one of the hardest things a person can go through. Not having a home to go to or
a place to sleep is depressing. Not having a job or money leaves people desperate to survive and
there is only so much help people can give. The problem with many countries, not just the United
States of America, is that the percent of homeless people are steadily increasing. According to the
Homelessness Overview of Current Issues and GAO Studies, there is close to 600,000 homeless
people living on the streets of America. Some don't care to help the situation, people will walk right
by a homeless man or woman begging for food and won't even look at them, much less give them a
couple dollars. It's sad, really but that is just the way the world ... Show more content on

There have been many Acts and Programs made to also help prevent homelessness, one is Entitled
Homelessness: Coordination and Evaluation of Programs Are Essential. This is a study that
"identifies 50 programs, administered by eight federal agencies, that either are specifically targeted
to the homeless or are non targeted and therefore available to low–income people in general,
including those who are homeless. We found that both the targeted and "non targeted" programs
provide an array of services, such as housing, health care, job training, and transportation." (p. 4).
Unfortunately, there are people out in the world who don't care for helping the homeless. Mostly,
they ignore them and one reason for that is because it is easier to ignore the homeless than it is to
acknowledge and help them. But acknowledging them is the first step to helping them, and helping
them will decrease homelessness nationally. The Help the Homeless Program is a good program to
start and as long as there are people who care and join in to get the program started, then it will

One way of helping the homeless is by volunteering at your local homeless shelter. Volunteering is a
very beneficial way of helping the homeless. "The most productive way to get started helping the
homeless is to join forces with a well–established operation." ("4 Ways You Can Help the Homeless
in Your Community") As said in the quote, join forces with a well–established operation. When you
volunteer at your local homeless shelter you are not only helping your community out, but you are
also helping the homeless in and around that area. "Volunteer your hobbies – Every one of us has

likely get a job. "It's hard not to feel for a homeless person you see sitting on the sidewalk, but
helping that individual by dropping a dollar bill into his hand isn't always the answer." (McCoy,
"How to Help Homeless People" 1st sentence) Many homeless people wouldn't want money. If you
read the signs a real homeless person create, it would say they need food and clothes, so money isn't
actually important to them. They prefer food to not starve for the day, and they prefer clothes to stay
warm during fall and winter and cool during spring and summer. If you give a homeless person
money you may think they are going to buy food, but in reality a few may go pick up alcohol or

Tuberculosis In The Homeless Population
Findings of tuberculosis in the homeless population are no surprise, as this specific population has a
high incidence of conditions that increase the risk of TB, including: substance abuse, HIV infection,
and congregation in crowded shelters. With these risk factors that are present amongst this
vulnerable community, the spread of TB increases prominently.
Due to the transmission that TB is spread, through the air from one person to another coughing,
sneezing, and speaking. It is vital that those who have TB disease are treated, complete the medicine
regimen, and take the medications exactly as prescribed. If one was to discontinue the medications
without completion, they can become ill again and if they do not take the drugs correctly, the TB
bacteria that are still alive may become resistant to those medications. TB must be treated by taking
antibiotics, the exact drugs and length of treatment depend on your age, overall health, possible drug

Psychological barriers are also noted in the homeless population such as: humiliation, anxiety about

Homeless People 's View On The Homeless
Here in America there is a high percentage of homeless people. People often label homeless people
as lazy, not willing to work, or they believe they are just looking for hand out. But that is just other
people 's views on the homeless. My point of view is that maybe they had a rough start in life, or
something happened to them or maybe they didn't have a mother or father figure in their lives to tell
them right from wrong. Other might of grown up in broken homes which might of caused them to
be the way they are. Lastly, since they didn 't have anyone there for them they might of not known
how to keep a job, known right from wrong and that is why they are put in a position that they are
now. Although there is people who are actually suffering due to the fact that they are homeless there
are people who pretend to be homeless just so they can get an extra couple bucks. That 's probably
why some people actually believe that people are just lazy. Personally, I believed that homeless
people were actually homeless until the day I witnessed something unbelievable. As I made my way
out of the supermarket with my parents I saw a young man roughly around the age of 30 asking for
money. He was dressed okay compared to other homeless people but I didn't think much of it until I
saw the same guy about three blocks away talking on a cellphone and getting into a brand new car,
and yes he was the driver. That was the day I probably became skeptical about homeless people.

Homeless Shelters : Homeless Shelter Essay
As with every service planning area, there are numerous services or shelters that tend to the
homeless. With the San Gabriel Valley services being so distant and clustered, it was difficult to
assess the overall feel of the homeless services. That is, it was difficult to find any homeless shelters
even with the use of a handheld GPS and map, signifying that access to the homeless services is not
as simple as it sounds. On the other hand, it was not at all difficult to find other services that seemed,
to be very helpful for the homeless in general. A screenshot of the area (above) shows the charity
and centers grouped within a few blocks of one another, yet very distant from the other groups.
When strolling down Valley Mall, it was hard not to see stores that had special discounts and budget
oriented services. There are few homeless shelters in the area, but most of them are concealed,
lacking any signs. While homeless shelters would be the most obvious choice to canvas in terms of
finding services for the homeless, there are plenty more types of services that cater to the homeless.
For example, in the Valley Mall at the center of El Monte, there are services such as laundromats,
thrift stores and even discount pharmacies that exist because of the outstanding need for them. One
interesting thing to note was that every single shop along this street had metal bars over the rear
windows, presumably to defend from theft. Through a basic observation, it was clear that there were

The Homelessness Of The Homeless
One of the most discussed topics around the world is homelessness. Each and every day more and
more people become homeless. People around the world have tried numerous times to resolve this
dilemma. This situation is growing and it 's starting to spiral out of control. One solution that is
getting popular the more we let this situation grow is that criminalizing the homeless is ok. People
cannot criminalize the homeless. Homeless people should not be criminalized because they have
nowhere to go, they have it hard enough, and putting them in jail will solve nothing. The fact that
there are laws out there for being homeless is just pitiful and low. Every human has rights and just
because he or she is homeless does not mean you can take away their rights. Homeless people
should not be criminalized because they have nowhere to go. Yes there are homeless shelters, but
not all homeless shelters are open for them to stay in. Read into things about homeless shelters and
go there. There not as amazing as they 're cut out to be. Some homeless people say they would
rather go back to the streets than to stay in homeless shelters. If one were to look at some of these
homeless shelters today they would think the same. Some of them are just disgusting and downright
horrible. Why do people expect someone to actually sleep in a place where it is not sanitary.

Homeless Youth Problem
Imagine being 16 and men bedroom being a sleeping bag under a bridge or a cot in an overfilled
shelter. Sadly that is a reality a lot of youth face. Homelessness is a huge problem alone, but having
so many young people on the streets is even worse. To solve this problem we must first understand
how young people are put in this position, how many young people are homeless, and what being in
this position does to them. The first step to fixing this issue is figuring out who is in this position
and why. Approximately 34% of the country's homeless population are under the age of 24, why are
these people homeless? Most youths become homeless because they are running away from
something. About 79% of homeless youth were being physically abused at home and 39% were
sexually abused. Youth identifying as members of the LGBT community make up about 40% of the
homeless youth population. Being homeless is not a choice these young people (ranging from 12–
24) have made. Sometimes it isn't even abuse or a lack of acceptance that forces them into this life
of poverty, in some case their families could not financially support them and the rest of the family
and they leave as to not burden them. Now, we know who is homeless and why, we now need to ...

Homeless People : The Homeless
Homeless in Baltimore City is a serious issue that must be resolve. There are different types of
homeless people: Chronic, transitional and episodic homeless people. However, there are several or
multiples reasons for which people become homeless. It could be due to lack of financial incentives
or economic reason, immigrants people (students or foreign), a choice of an individual or poverty,
housing needs of the lack of low–income housing and other issues such as unemployment,
underemployment, domestic violence and divorce. As Policymakers, we will focus on the homeless
people in Baltimore and advocates some solutions to end this issue. Although we will suggest some
policies and solutions that can be helpful for the homeless people. Baltimore's homeless population
has been increased in recent years. Public, state and local government should be involved and their
participation would be required to fulfill those programs. First, the government must assist
community and most importantly to ensure that those solutions that they will create are long–term
goals. Having a house, a permanent supportive housing is the first solution to resolve for the
homeless people. So, the government must take vacant homes in Baltimore city and turn it into
affordable permanent housing which will benefit the people because some homeless people usually

The elimination and cut backs of public mental hospitals resulted in the building of Community
Mental Health Centers. The serious mentally ill who were supposed to benefit by these
developments were replaced by people who were well off and thought they were sick. Making the
problem worse the serious mentally ill were unable to re–enter hospitals because of tighter
admissions standards ( Contemporary World Issues 1990). Without hospitalization or the ability to
support themselves they were forced to the streets.
Declining wages have put housing out of reach for many workers. In every state, more than
minimum wage is needed to afford a one– or two–bedroom apartment. A minimum–wage worker
would have to work 87 hours a week to afford a two–bedroom apartment (U.S Conference of
Mayors 1998). Thus insufficient income leaves many people homeless.
For families and individuals struggling to pay rent, a serious illness or disability can push them over
the edge into homelessness. This might begin with a lost job, reduction of savings to pay for care,
and eventual eviction.
I feel in writing this essay we should all help the homeless to get back on their feet. They are in
desperate need of a helping hand, to get through this. Other reasons for helping the homeless are,
they are human beings as well as you and I, it reduces our taxes if there were no homeless, and some
crime will be eliminated on the streets.

Homeless And Non Homeless Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual
The study examined two groups, homeless and non–homeless Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB)
youths (Rosario, Schrimshaw, & Hunter, 2012). There were a total of 156 participants between the
ages of 14 and 21 years with a mean age of 18.3 years. Participants were recruited from community
based organizations, which focused on youths and two college organizations of LGB students.
Researchers wanted to explore potential risk factors associated with the reason some LGB youths
become homeless, while others do not. The risk factors included experiencing sexual abuse,
negative responses from others based on one's sexual orientation, unbearable stress for the parent or
youth, and substance abuse. All of which are reasons one may run away from home and become
homeless. Lastly, researcher's hypothesized non–homeless youth are less likely than homeless
youths to be involved in sexual abuse and early sexual identity development as it pertains to LGB
(Rosario et al., 2012).
The results revealed 75 of the 156 youths reported being homeless at some point, 57 had a history of
running away, 38 were evicted from their parent's home; 20 youths experienced both running away
and eviction (Rosario et al., 2012). From the 57 youths with a history of running away, 23 reported
running away once and 14 more than one time. In relation to sexual orientation 13 youths who ran

I was now out of job, with nowhere to live, and no means of an income. I finally had to swallow any

more than dumbfounded, and wondered if he even believed me or if he thought I was trying to

was officially homeless and horrified. I refused to make signs for begging and didn't want to be

decided that I would use some of it for the city transit in search of a new job. Looking for a job was
much harder than I anticipated because I didn't have an address, references or a phone number to be
reached at (because it was shut off for lack of payment). These were the reasons I was unable to
completely fill out an application or to be hired. I didn't know of anything else to do except to just

Homeless Organization
Some people might think that the people living on the streets don't have a home because they didn't
make use of opportunities while they could. Even though that may be true for some, others didn't
have the best childhood and didn't have the money to go to school and be successful. I am here to
give them a second chance and renew themselves. I am creating an organization to build tiny homes
for the homeless. I have done some research about different tiny homes communities. There are
several in the US that have wanted to house the homeless, but none have specifically wanted to
create an organization and expand. One is located in Austin, Texas and they serve the homeless food
with a food truck. My goal is to be able to expand from Texas and go into surrounding states as well.
There are roughly 565,000 homeless people in the US that need our help, 20,000 of those are located
in Texas. If you have ever been to the Dallas Fort Worth area, you have probably seen some around

who want to support us. I was thinking we should have a donation box where you can donate

I disagree with the statement that the best way to help them is to give them money because of these
three reasons. Firstly, the reason why people became a homeless is not only because they don't have

suggestion to combat this issue is to reenforce intervention strategies of certain government

the main factors for why people are homeless is due to the mental and physical illness and substance
abuse. Effective intervention strategies must be achieved in order to combat homelessness and to
ensure veterans are receiving aid they deserve. An example of improving intervention would be to

Persuasive Essay On Homeless
47,725 or about 8% of the homeless population are veterans and 50% of the homeless people are
over 50 years old in the U.S. Homelessness is an unsatisfactory issue that we as humans do not see
the importance of the help they need. In our community, we take things for granted and not worry
about the importance of helping others. The unfortunate people living in the streets have passed
through difficult times and appreciate small or big things. Homeless is a person without a home, and
therefore typically living on the streets. Some homeless people have become abusive of drugs,
alcohol, and other different type of drugs. Homelessness is a major problem in our society.
Homelessness contaminates our city, makes our city look dirty, and it is priority to fix this problem.
To begin, homelessness contaminates our city and spreads diseases like Hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS of
sexually transmitted infections, virus and Tuberculosis. For example, when the unhoused go to the
public bathroom, sometimes they do not clean themselves or wash their hands. During, the homeless
pass it on to their neighbors or other living creatures and spread or contaminate with different types
of diseases. Homeless contaminate our city by littering on the ground with plastic, foil, and other
types of things that contaminate. Based on what I have seen, one example is when I go down to the
Santa Ana Public Library my mom, sister, and I see that there are various amounts of trash on the
ground. To include, when my family and I pass through the Angels Stadium in Anaheim I see that
there are numerous homeless people that are contaminating our environment with plenty of diseases.
To add, in the short story ¨What do Fish Have to do With Anything¨ by Avi, it states that ¨his matted,
streaky gray hair hung like a ragged curtain over his dirty face"when describing the homeless man.
As a matter of fact, the author states, his shoes were torn; he had rough hands that lay upon his
knees; and his hand was palm up. No one seemed to pay him any attention and he begs for money.
Because he is filthy, most likely he is carrying bacteria that may cause diseases. In my community,

Homeless Life In The Homeless

  • 1. Homeless Life In The Homeless Growing up, I was fortunate to live a comfortable life. My parents were both college educated and had well–paying jobs at Boeing in St. Louis. My three siblings and I lived in a good neighborhood in one of the top school districts in the state, and we had everything we needed: three meals every day, our supplies for school, and the ability to take part in sports and other extra–curricular activities throughout the year. Living in that neighborhood, however, skewed my view of how the world worked. While I understood that there were people who were homeless and struggled just to get one meal each day, I didn't comprehend the sheer amount of people, just in St. Louis alone, who fell into that category. When I was about 7 or 8 though, a group of us from our church visited a homeless shelter to bring food. Our goal was to help out in any way we could as part of a community service day we had established. Because of the culture shock I experienced upon arriving, visiting that homeless shelter for the first time changed my view of the world by informing me of the homeless epidemic in the United States, and changed my mindset to give back to people less fortunate. Like any young kid going through life, I wanted the world! If my friends got a new gaming system or a new toy, I had to have it as well. And like any young kid, when my parents said no, I thought it was the end of the world. To me, that was a huge injustice; my friends could get new games ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Homeless Essay Homeless People have an image of what homeless people should be, I didn't fit these descriptions! I didn't have the messy hair, or the torn clothes, but that all changed! I had only been homeless a long time now, and I had tried my hardest to keep my clothes clean and clean myself. But I couldn't keep up with the standards I was setting for myself. It's a lot harder than people think! Imagine suddenly being chucked out of your home and not knowing what to do. I don't know anyone that could handle it, well, I actually don't know anyone anymore, all my friends, my family turned their backs on me, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I went to go get her, but Gary ran over to me and told me to stay if I wanted more fun! Of course I did, so I stayed! Gary took me over to a deserted part of the beach and started to kiss me, things got heated. It was so romantic, I wasn't going to stop it from happening, so I went with it. Do I regret that day? Definitely! Well it happened, I can't change that can I! Too late now, I wish I had known the trouble it had caused. I went back to school on Monday, as happy as I thought possible and went over to see Gary, I ran up behind him and whispered in his ear, he turned around, called me a slut, all his friends laughed and walked off, I burst into tears and ran away, they laughed harder, chanting slut slut slut! I couldn't face being in school, not now. I went to find Kathy, she turned her back on me, in a weekend my life had been turned upside down. Ruined! I ran away, ran home. No one was in, they were all working! I ran up to my room crying, didn't know what to do, I couldn't face going back, so I got a pad of paper. I wrote on my desk what had happened and I packed my bags. I wouldn't be gone long, well I thought I wouldn't. So I left! Didn't look back. I walked for hours that day, no where to go so I just went! Walked, aimlessly. Before I knew it, hours had gone. I felt bad, so I walked home. I stood outside my house, looking in the window. I saw my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Runaway and Homeless Youth Homelessness is a real serious health issue all over the world that must be addressed. A lot of people in a public frequently misunderstand the cause of homelessness. Remarks regarding homeless people such as "they need to just get a job" or "go to school" are normally used liberally by members of society because they neglect to look at the complete issue. Homelessness does not discriminate. Individuals that have previously experience or may experience being homeless can be from different regions, have different cultural backgrounds, ages, and could be of any gender. Minorities seem to be mostly affected by homelessness. A study done in 2012 found that the homeless population is consisted of 39% non–Hispanic Whites, 42% ... Outreach served an additional 36,020 youth – nearly five thousand more than in 2011. NINELINE received 8,176 crisis calls. Acercatel (Mexico helpline) received 4,775 crisis calls. Covenant House received a three–star charity rating from Charity Navigator, America's premier independent charity evaluator, indicating that Covenant House "exceeds or meets industry standards and performs as well as or better than most charities in its Cause." Covenant House also meets all 20 of the comprehensive and demanding standards of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance (The Covenant House 2014). The prevention program I will be designing will strive to work as hard for the community like The Covenant House. "Home away from Home" is a homeless shelter for youths, children, and runaways between the ages 13 – 20 that have been emancipated. The program will be dedicated to transforming the lives of homeless, runaway and threaten youth during the course of safe, supportive, and encouraging relationships and helpful and innovative services that influence them toward independence. • 7. Empathy For Homeless People People do not show enough empathy towards people who unfortunately are homeless they show compassion but don't do anything to make a difference for them. Empathy is sharing the same emotions and feelings towards another person. Because of the lack of empathy of homeless people, society is not empathetic enough. Obviously there's a lack of empathy for homeless people because they're not fortinet. Three to seven of those cities are in america. And in Salt Lake, Utah they held a 4 hour meeting, a couple weeks later mayor Troy Walker brang up he wanted to invite two new homeless shelter into the area. The community responded in a childish manner as a homeless man named Lawrence Horman stood on stage the stage telling about himself and what he had to go thru being homeless as he was asking for support and help and said "we'll help ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So people walk past and could careless or forget about putting effort to get these people off the streets. People should not shame someone asking for help and trying to do better people don't have enough empathy because if they did they would consider how the homeless and feel and try to understand how it would be in there shoes if people have did have enough empathy they wouldn't boo or be against people that are unfortunate with little to no money some of them have kids and if there child they wouldn't want the community to be against them. As the united states we should own up to the reputation be build. We don't show enough empathy like the boy in this video "persectalces". At first this high schooler walk past a boy sitting on the ground trying to write in his note book with a long face the high school boy look at him and walks past. • 9. Homeless In San Francisco Homeless in San Francisco San Francisco has a large population of homeless people. San Francisco is the 13th most populated city and is the eighth worst city homeless rate with estimated 7,000 homeless in 2015. There are many factors that can result in the high number of homeless people. One of the most common reasons why is they could not get a job and they just decided to give up so they don't have enough money to do anything. I think there is a lot of homeless because we live in a competitive world and there is bigger demand on jobs than there is supply of it. It is also in San Francisco where the Super Bowl is held once a year. The Super Bowl is annual championship game of national football league which happens every year. The media does ... • 11. The Homeless Are Homeless : A Middle Class Lifestyle After... Maxwell and Erin were living a middle class lifestyle after marriage. After a year of marriage, taxes and bills began to catch up to them. Maxwell lost his job and Erin became pregnant. By the time their child was one year old their house was foreclosed, cars and valuable possessions were sold for money just to be able to eat for the next month. Living on the streets moving from shelter to shelter they were barely getting the nutrition that is needed to survive. So many people can end up homeless from children, to adults, and even veterans. According to Doran, fifteen percent of America's homeless are chronically homeless, which means the person has been homeless continuously for a year or more or has had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years (Doran). The reason there are so many homeless people now in the country is because of a very punitive and moralistic societal value we have about people who are homeless and in desperate need. (Tsemberis). The government should provide more adequate shelter because child homelessness is at an all time high in the United States, mental health issues are more common among homeless people, veteran homelessness is increasing throughout the United States. One in every 50 American children experiences homelessness, according to a new report that says most states have inadequate plans to address the worsening and often–overlooked problem ("1 and 50 children experience homelessness" 1). • 13. The Stigma Of The Homeless During the Great Depression, the homeless were almost glamorized as vagabonds who rode the rails with their belongings neatly tied up in a bandana over their shoulder. Today, the homeless can be anyone: children or women escaping an abusive relationship or those who just cannot afford to pay for housing. While some homeless people maintain employment of some sort, long term homelessness is usually a function of the inverse; either severely under–employed or no income stream at all with which to pay rent and utilities. While quite a bit of academic research has shown the need to focus on societal causes of homelessness, people who are homeless seem to be increasingly perceived and treated within a paradigm of individual sickness. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... National estimates suggest that nearly 2 million youth experience homelessness (Rhodes, Wine & Rice, April 2014) and that between 5–25% of those have some sort of pet. While it appears that pet ownership may contribute to a wide range of benefits, this also presents conflicts that arise within the homeless population. Homeless respondents also have stated that the general public tends to treat them better or are more likely to talk to them because of their pets, with the pets acting as "social facilitators" (Ibed). Pet ownership can strike such a strong emotional chord within a homeless person that it has been found within research that had not specifically focused on pet ownership within the homeless community have identified pets as a self–reported barrier to having access to social support mechanisms. This attachment to their pets are many times so strong that they (homeless) would sacrifice personal healthcare and other social services if no one was available to care for their pet while utilizing said treatment (J. Wasserman and J. Clair, 2010). Studying the comparison between people helping the homeless with a pet, rather than helping the homeless that doesn't, is important because it ... • 15. Homeless Problem Homeless people are those that cannot maintain regular, secure and adequate housing. They are on the side of streets, looking for ways to earn money and provide for themselves and their families. The underprivileged and poor health is exceedingly interconnected. Poverty arises from political, social and economical inequalities. Poverty leads to one becoming sick because of the lack of sanitation, poor nutrition, making the choice of putting health at risk to provide for their family. Poor health in turn traps communities in poverty. Residing in overcrowded and poor conditions contribute to the spread of diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia. Half of them were male, slightly over half were black and one–quarter was Hispanic. One in five identified as gay or bisexual. Transgender orientation was found in 11 boys and girls, 6 as boy/man, and 5 as girl/woman (Coalition for the Homeless). The main contributors to homelessness in children aged 13 years old to 18 years old is family conflict over sexual orientation. A 2007 report from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) states that 26% of gay teens who open up to their parents or guardians are told they much leave their home. LGBT youth also leave home due to physical, sexual and emotional abuse (Smithee). In another research in 2014, the Covenant House reported 66% of the youth were African American, 57% male, 43% female and 92% were 18 to 20 years old and 10% were 17 and younger. LGBT homeless youth aged 13 to 21 are more likely to abuse drug such as cocaine, crack or methamphetamines than non–LGBT homeless youths (Keuroghlian). Nearly 78 percent of all sheltered homeless persons are adults. Nearly, 62 percent are males and/or a minority group. No matter what the characteristics, any person can be homeless. Homelessness is becoming less of an issue in the United States and has decreased 2.3 percent in general, but still has a tight grip on the United States. • 19. Homelessness And The Homeless Community We have all seen it before. The man sitting on the cold street possessing only a few rudimentary goods while begging for food or the woman holding her child's hand while asking for spare change. Some people saunter by these downtrodden individuals unconcerned, while others give them sympathetic looks and drop a few coins in their cups. We are aware of homelessness, almost too aware and yet we go on with our lives without further regard. Homelessness has become such an epidemic in the United States that it is normal and practically expected to be seen in our urban streets. Homelessness is defined by the Merriam–Webster dictionary as, "Having no home or permanent residence." While that is true, there are many other dynamics that come into play with this social problem. Without proper housing, the homeless community is more susceptible to violence, disease, weather conditions, hunger and ultimately death. We all recognize homelessness but what can we do to help those in need? Having grown up less than an hour away from San Francisco, my family would make frequent trips to the city. In the city, encountering victims of homelessness is inevitable. In my younger years I could not help myself and would stare at these people which was usually followed by me asking my parents questions like, "Why is that man sleeping on the ground?". Though these questions were laced in innocence, they still hold significance today. Why is homelessness so prevalent and what are we doing as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Observation On Homeless Women Observations There is no one face, look or reason to homelessness. The women here are all different: backgrounds, marital status, age, race, sexual orientation, education and income levels. The status of "homeless" does not discriminate. Attitudes, emotional maturity, perspective on life and everything in between differs with the women of CrossRoads. Women are complex individuals in general. Homeless women are a completely different creature. They are prideful, boundaryless and have no sense of standing on your own and not blaming others for their own situations. As if they almost seem to enjoy living out of a Rubbermaid tote and having nothing to show for their lives. The women that I interacted with were no exception. The dynamic at the shelter is interesting. All the women try to "mother" the children; someone ultimately emerges as the "leader", and; everyone enjoys the drama that accompanies different personalities. The one I was surprised to learn was that CrossRoads is truly "just" a homeless shelter. The focus is not to rehabilitate, diagnose, offer social work service. It is simply a shelter, a place to sleep and eat a meal. I didn't know what to expect my first night as a volunteer. I was a bit nervous, wondering if I would see anyone that I knew. As it turns out, I did know someone staying there, her name is Patty. Patty is a woman in her mid–sixties. She has a family that lives locally and the last time I saw her, she had a job. • 23. Compare And Contrast Homeless People And The Homeless Have you ever thought of how privileged many of us are? Or what life would be like if everything was taken away from us? As of 2016, more than 169 people were homeless in Jackson, Michigan. This number isn't going down. With Jackson's many homeless inhabitants, there are also over 338 children in the foster care system just in our county alone. When comparing homeless people and foster care children, they are very similar. Both of them do not have a permanent home and both have nothing to hope for in the future. Most of these kids cannot find a proper home to take care of them or even adopt them in the near future. The only things that they bear are maybe one outfit and a few things that they carry around in a tattered grocery bag. This isn't the child's fault. This isn't the parents fault. This is our fault for not stepping up and taking action when we hear cries of help from these children. Since no one in Jackson County is willing to bring these hurting kids into their homes and help take care of them, they are sent off to boarding schools that are in the northern part of Michigan. Not only are they torn away from the only things they know, but they are also taken away from where they grew up. These kids experience great pain almost everyday of their life. Most of the children think it is their fault. They think that "no one wants me" or "I'm not important." These kids feel like they lost the battle to the world that would do anything to tear them apart. These kids feel like they lost hope that they once had and now somehow perished in the wind. These kids feel like they can do it on their own and will never need anyone else's help. Help is just the thing that these overwhelmed children need. Proposal For Homeless Essay Kaila Rose ENGLISH 1102 Mr. Charles Farmer October 17, 2017 A Proposal to Less Homelessness A person without a home, and therefore living on the streets is defined as homeless. America has numbers of homeless people living without a home or starving from hunger. The solution to this problem would be the United States providing homeless people with permanent, affordable housing, and wraparound services. Permanent supportive housing will resolve this issue for our country. Shelters can be beneficial in providing beds and roofs to people who don't have them, especially on those cold and rainy nights where sleeping outside could be lethal for some. Once they are settled in a stable home, they gain access to services such as drug and alcohol treatment, an assigned social worker, or job training. They do not have to take advantage of those services, but most people do choose to do so. Several people who need permanent supportive housing are fighting mental problems or drug and alcohol manipulation, and would have ended up in institutions. Isolating those homeless people from the rest of society is like institutionalizing them, and it violates the law. Some housing developments provide both permanent supportive housing and low–income housing, so that homes can be made available to larger amounts of the population. This kind of mixed–use housing helps create communities. This includes, single moms living in affordable housing aiding ex–cons living in supportive housing, and vice versa. In this mass increase, the population mostly consists of homeless individuals under the age of eighteen. These minors are mostly unaccompanied, with no adults to teach them right or wrong. Being homeless and on the streets, it gives the minors less chances in life and it also influences them to act out negatively in society. The number of homeless teens have been skyrocketing and the problem is that with the amount we have now it might be hard to control in the future. Around a month ago, there was a situation that I witnessed where this young teen was going around a neighborhood stealing items from various houses. During that time, I was also notified that these types of situations have been occurring a lot recently. Aside from this incident, a couple months back a teen went into my aunt's shop and attempted to steal some of her belongings. • 32. The Homeless Of Our Society At this very moment I'm sure that no one in this speech class would imagine being homeless within the next month or two. However, sometimes life can be unpredictable, and for many people the unexpected strikes out of nowhere. Contrary to what most people assume, those that are homeless are usually just ordinary people going through a difficult stage in life. The homeless of our society from my perspective are overlooked to an extent of rotting the core of our communities. A person is deserving of shelter, food, water and other commodities as long as they are of value to society. Those who are less similar to the majority are moderately comprehended while the majority is organized in resemblance to a chronological list where the amount success determines the amount of burdens one would carry. Yet to fall out of this majority could be as simple as skin color, age or even height are factors that seemingly repel you from becoming part of the majority. Taking these things into deep consideration I decided to do two things for my outside event; I spoke with my uncle who currently has nowhere to live and I traveled downtown to Sulzbacher Center Homeless for the day. My mother has requested that my uncle remain anonymous, so with respect to her we shall address him as "Dynamite" his nickname. • 36. A Research On The Homeless Population 1. In your text on pages 208–209, the author discusses his research on the homeless population. He refers to the many routes one can take to become homeless. Choose two populations from his list that you think might work in your career as a human service professional. Describe two possible interventions or tasks that you might be involved with in working with each population. What are some of the general skills a human services professional might need to work with these populations? There are many types of homelessness in our society and our community. They become homeless for different reasons; it could be intentional or uncontrolled. The two that stick out the most for my community are the push outs and the new poor. The push outs are people who are kicked out by their parents, commonly teenagers; or families and adults who are evicted from landlords. The new poor are when people become unemployed due to work skills are out–of–date because of technological changes. Some skills that are needed to help each one of these groups is to meet their current needs. As addressing the needs of the homeless it is important to focus on prevention, as well as, remediation of their problem ("What is human service," 2011). • 40. Homeless Child Education : Homeless Children Homeless Children Education Several factors severely compromise the ability of homeless children to succeed in school, as I discovered in interviews with 277 homeless families in New York City in 1988. Barriers to the success of these children include health problems, hunger, transportation obstacles, and difficulty obtaining school clothes and suppliesâ€"all of which are linked to low attendance rates (Rafferty and Rollins 1989). Other factors are associated with the nature of the emergency shelter system, the mobility that follows the loss of the home, and barriers that inhibit access to schools and to various school services. Sadly, there is no right to shelter in the United States. Even when families successfully obtain emergency shelter, other obstacles prevail. Placements are often made without regard to community ties or educational continuity. For example, the 1989 study by Rafferty and Rollins showed that 71 percent of homeless families with school– age children were sheltered in areas far removed from their original homes. Many had been frequently bounced between facilities. In many cases, each transfer to a different shelter requires a transfer to a new school, and each transfer means the loss of valuable school days. In addition, the noisy environment and constant flow of traffic typical of many shelters make it difficult for children to do their homework or get enough sleep. Project SAFE does not stop there. Homeless People And The Homeless Essay Think about what it is like, not knowing where you will end up sleeping tonight, or when your next meal or shower is going to be, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness there were about 600,000 homeless people in America in January of 2015. This paper will hopefully spread insight on homelessness as a whole. There are many misconceptions about homeless people and many facts that people do not realize about homeless people. These facts should be brought to attention in order to help increase the knowledge of what normal everyday individuals can do to help. Every day we are surrounded by someone who is homeless and we don't even know it. People tend to have a false interpretation of what a homeless person looks like, the reasons for them becoming homeless, and even how to help them. There are many different factors that cause people to become homeless. The leading causes of homelessness in America are not having enough affordable housing, a lack of income, unemployment, poverty, and domestic violence. The reason people can become homeless can be the result of one specific event which occurs, or it could be due to a kind of snowball effect which occurs, where one small event leads to another and then another, until the end result is not having a house anymore. While interviewing Katrina Knight, the executive director of Good Shephard Center for the Homeless, she gave me a good example of this. • 46. The Media Of The Homeless Homelessness is so prevalent in our society that many people have become socially and morally numb to the issue. As homelessness worsens, the homeless are being seen less and less as humans and more as a nuisance such as pests and wildlife, or even just a statistic. Being at the bottom of the social class structure is rough, to put it lightly. There is nothing glamorous about living at the streets; in fact, there are very few positive points, if any, to being homeless but that doesn 't mean they are that much different from other classes. At the core, they are still people trying to do better, just like everyone else in the higher classes. Diana Kendall, author of Framing Class: Media Representations of Wealth and Poverty in America speaks in great detail about the many ways that the media portrays the homeless in news or articles. The media frames homelessness at best, sympathetically – as if they are "in need of our pity," and at worst they show those who are considered chronically homeless as representatives of the whole homeless community (Kendall 4). Homelessness has always been depicted in a negative way. Many old stories and fables tell of the homeless, in the best way, as simple beggars who can not survive without the charity and good will of more prosperous people. In more negative ways, they are depicted as being lazy or having an addiction of some sort which lead to their lot in life. Because there is such a variation in the character and circumstances ... According to the Homelessness Overview of Current Issues and GAO Studies, there is close to 600,000 homeless people living on the streets of America. People often label homeless people as lazy, not willing to work, or they believe they are just looking for hand out. But that is just other people 's views on the homeless. My point of view is that maybe they had a rough start in life, or something happened to them or maybe they didn't have a mother or father figure in their lives to tell them right from wrong. Other might of grown up in broken homes which might of caused them to be the way they are. • 58. Homeless Shelters : Homeless Shelter Essay As with every service planning area, there are numerous services or shelters that tend to the homeless. With the San Gabriel Valley services being so distant and clustered, it was difficult to assess the overall feel of the homeless services. That is, it was difficult to find any homeless shelters even with the use of a handheld GPS and map, signifying that access to the homeless services is not as simple as it sounds. On the other hand, it was not at all difficult to find other services that seemed, to be very helpful for the homeless in general. A screenshot of the area (above) shows the charity and centers grouped within a few blocks of one another, yet very distant from the other groups. When strolling down Valley Mall, it was hard not to see stores that had special discounts and budget oriented services. There are few homeless shelters in the area, but most of them are concealed, lacking any signs. While homeless shelters would be the most obvious choice to canvas in terms of finding services for the homeless, there are plenty more types of services that cater to the homeless. They are approximently 40% of people who are homeless. In rural areas the largest group of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The elimination and cut backs of public mental hospitals resulted in the building of Community Mental Health Centers. The serious mentally ill who were supposed to benefit by these developments were replaced by people who were well off and thought they were sick. Making the problem worse the serious mentally ill were unable to re–enter hospitals because of tighter admissions standards ( Contemporary World Issues 1990). Without hospitalization or the ability to support themselves they were forced to the streets. Declining wages have put housing out of reach for many workers. In every state, more than minimum wage is needed to afford a one– or two–bedroom apartment. A minimum–wage worker would have to work 87 hours a week to afford a two–bedroom apartment (U.S Conference of Mayors 1998). Thus insufficient income leaves many people homeless. For families and individuals struggling to pay rent, a serious illness or disability can push them over the edge into homelessness. This might begin with a lost job, reduction of savings to pay for care, and eventual eviction. I feel in writing this essay we should all help the homeless to get back on their feet. They are in desperate need of a helping hand, to get through this. Other reasons for helping the homeless are, they are human beings as well as you and I, it reduces our taxes if there were no homeless, and some crime will be eliminated on the streets. ... • 68. Homeless And Non Homeless Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual The study examined two groups, homeless and non–homeless Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) youths (Rosario, Schrimshaw, & Hunter, 2012). There were a total of 156 participants between the ages of 14 and 21 years with a mean age of 18.3 years. Participants were recruited from community based organizations, which focused on youths and two college organizations of LGB students. Researchers wanted to explore potential risk factors associated with the reason some LGB youths become homeless, while others do not. The risk factors included experiencing sexual abuse, negative responses from others based on one's sexual orientation, unbearable stress for the parent or youth, and substance abuse. All of which are reasons one may run away from home and become homeless. Lastly, researcher's hypothesized non–homeless youth are less likely than homeless youths to be involved in sexual abuse and early sexual identity development as it pertains to LGB (Rosario et al., 2012). The results revealed 75 of the 156 youths reported being homeless at some point, 57 had a history of running away, 38 were evicted from their parent's home; 20 youths experienced both running away and eviction (Rosario et al., 2012). From the 57 youths with a history of running away, 23 reported running away once and 14 more than one time. In relation to sexual orientation 13 youths who ran away, and 12 youths who were evicted reported identifying as LGB as the reason for becoming homeless. Researchers then combined the ... • 70. Homeless Volunteer Homeless Volunteer Tera Penrod Purpose: To share my experience of being homeless and how it has affected me. Audience: Readers interested in being enlightened about the homeless at a personal level. "Better is a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse."– PROVERBS 28:6. I learned the truth in this verse while living with relatives in Colorado Springs, Colorado and the time I became homeless. What comes to mind when thinking about homeless people? I remember the first time I saw a homeless person begging at an intersection. He looked scruffy, unkempt, and dirty, which really scared me because I did not know what he would do to me. He just stood there, holding a sign that read, "Out of work, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was now out of job, with nowhere to live, and no means of an income. I finally had to swallow any pride I had left and make the call to my father, who lived in Michigan. After talking and explaining everything (most everything, because what girl wants to tell their father they were raped) to my father, he was displeased. He didn't have any money to send me, wouldn't send me money if he did have any, and told me that I chose to move to Colorado, so I needed to work it out for myself. I was more than dumbfounded, and wondered if he even believed me or if he thought I was trying to scheme him for money. Whatever his reasons, I was on my own with no one and nowhere to go. I was officially homeless and horrified. I refused to make signs for begging and didn't want to be judged as I had judged others. I did have a little bit of money, but not enough for a place to live and decided that I would use some of it for the city transit in search of a new job. Looking for a job was much harder than I anticipated because I didn't have an address, references or a phone number to be reached at (because it was shut off for lack of payment). These were the reasons I was unable to completely fill out an application or to be hired. I didn't know of anything else to do except to just be homeless and live like them (or at least how I thought). I knew I had some money left over that I could use for food, and had even thought about staying in a motel for a few nights. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Homeless Organization Some people might think that the people living on the streets don't have a home because they didn't make use of opportunities while they could. Even though that may be true for some, others didn't have the best childhood and didn't have the money to go to school and be successful. I am here to give them a second chance and renew themselves. I am creating an organization to build tiny homes for the homeless. I have done some research about different tiny homes communities. There are several in the US that have wanted to house the homeless, but none have specifically wanted to create an organization and expand. One is located in Austin, Texas and they serve the homeless food with a food truck. My goal is to be able to expand from Texas and go into surrounding states as well. There are roughly 565,000 homeless people in the US that need our help, 20,000 of those are located in Texas. If you have ever been to the Dallas Fort Worth area, you have probably seen some around the streets. Texas has tons of acres of empty land that we can make these communities on and transport the homeless to these houses to get a fresh start. Speaking of the ... My solution is to spread the word about the organization by putting out flyers, maybe asking the newspaper to put an ad in, and making a website to gain awareness and to spread the word everywhere not just in our small town. Sponsors don't have to be just big companies; it can be locals who want to support us. I was thinking we should have a donation box where you can donate supplies, furniture, appliances, and even toys and clothes for the kids. Getting furniture and appliances will cut the cost of the house tremendously. The big sponsors I would love to have would be Lowe's and Home Depot. They would help us with all the supplies (wood, screws, nail, lighting, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Helping A Homeless I disagree with the statement that the best way to help them is to give them money because of these three reasons. Firstly, the reason why people became a homeless is not only because they don't have a money. One of the reason that homeless start to live on the street is because, they lost motivation of their life. For example, some homeless people prefer to live outside, even they could afford to rent a room. It causes by feeling of guilt, and lost confidence for the future. Also, homeless will adapt to live their life as a homeless. When people get hurts of their mind, it's very hard thing to cure of it. The mental illness is not easy to relief as a physical illness, because the memory of mind is stay in their head for a long period. So ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Homeless Veterans My problem revolves around homeless veterans and how they are at a higher risk for suicide than those who are not homeless. Several factors relate to the notable risk for veteran suicide including health factors, substance and alcohol abuse, stressful life events, social isolation and psychiatric disorders. Veterans who are homeless show higher rates for these significant factors including psychiatric disorders, alcohol and drug abuse and chronic medical conditions. There is a correlation between veteran homelessness and suicide and several disciplinary perspectives relate to it. The most notable disciplines that effect veteran homelessness include sociology and economics. There are several economic factors that influence why veterans become ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Donovan, S and Shinseki, E.K. of the American Journal of Public Health, the suggestion to combat this issue is to reenforce intervention strategies of certain government organizations that work and to funnel federal resources to those strategies (Donovan, 2013). One of the main factors for why people are homeless is due to the mental and physical illness and substance abuse. Effective intervention strategies must be achieved in order to combat homelessness and to ensure veterans are receiving aid they deserve. An example of improving intervention would be to increase investment in effective, evidence–based programs utilizing such as the Housing First model created by the VA which helps assist veterans with access to health care, employment and other supportive services that promote long–term housing stability, reduce recidivism and improve quality of ... • 78. Persuasive Essay On Homeless 47,725 or about 8% of the homeless population are veterans and 50% of the homeless people are over 50 years old in the U.S. Homelessness is an unsatisfactory issue that we as humans do not see the importance of the help they need. In our community, we take things for granted and not worry about the importance of helping others. The unfortunate people living in the streets have passed through difficult times and appreciate small or big things. Homeless is a person without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets. Some homeless people have become abusive of drugs, alcohol, and other different type of drugs. Homelessness is a major problem in our society. Homelessness contaminates our city, makes our city look dirty, and it is priority to fix this problem. To begin, homelessness contaminates our city and spreads diseases like Hepatitis A, HIV/AIDS of sexually transmitted infections, virus and Tuberculosis. For example, when the unhoused go to the public bathroom, sometimes they do not clean themselves or wash their hands. During, the homeless pass it on to their neighbors or other living creatures and spread or contaminate with different types of diseases. Homeless contaminate our city by littering on the ground with plastic, foil, and other types of things that contaminate. Based on what I have seen, one example is when I go down to the Santa Ana Public Library my mom, sister, and I see that there are various amounts of trash on the ground. To include, when my family and I pass through the Angels Stadium in Anaheim I see that there are numerous homeless people that are contaminating our environment with plenty of diseases. To add, in the short story ¨What do Fish Have to do With Anything¨ by Avi, it states that ¨his matted, streaky gray hair hung like a ragged curtain over his dirty face"when describing the homeless man. As a matter of fact, the author states, his shoes were torn; he had rough hands that lay upon his knees; and his hand was palm up. No one seemed to pay him any attention and he begs for money. Because he is filthy, most likely he is carrying bacteria that may cause diseases. In my community, near the riverbed you can tell that the homeless leave their feces ...
