1. Who would be the
audience for your
media product?
By Amirah Newton
2. Who are the target audience?
Habits/lifestyle/media consumption –
We targeted our movie towards general consumers of the Horror genre, we did this by including all the
ideological elements of a classic horror genre production which we established through research
into existing productions as seen here:
Due to our film being produced independently with a low budget, we also targeted it towards fans of
independent film producers and studios and those with an interest in armature productions by
emerging young directors and actors, by distributing our production through an independent studio
rather than a larger one such as TimeWarner (which would have expected a film to target a much
wider audience in order to gain more money at the box-office).
Age:
We targeted our production at an audience aged 15 and up, we did not target our film towards those
younger than 15 as due to its mature content we had to rate it a certificate 15 once the story/script
were finalised . To direct our production towards our chosen audience we researched both new
and old existing productions (such as and) with this we were able to include elements of both
classic and modern cinema (such as the iconography), therefore suiting both those at the younger
end of the target audience (ages approximately 15 to 30) who generally are newer horror
enthusiasts looking for originality, and those older (30+) who would feel a sense of nostalgia in the
classic elements to our production as it is greatly reminiscent of the horror movie of their youth.
3. Who are the target audience?
(continued)
Gender:
We directed our movie towards a unisex audience, as horror is typically a genre that
includes elements that both sexes enjoy. Despite both main characters featured in our
2-minute opening being female later in the movie male characters would have been
introduced. Neither sex would be portrayed weaker than the other and the ratio of
male to female zombies would also be even, and this lack of sexism would make it
enjoyable for all audience members regardless of gender.
Disability/ Sexuality/ Ethnicity/ Social economic class:
As with gender there is no discrimination against Disability, Sexuality, Ethnicity or Social
Economic Class within our product, none of these elements are addressed within the
opening we produced, however later in the film all would be addressed with a
consistent sense of equality, we would include disabled characters, characters with
different sexualities, people from different ethnicity’s and those from all different social
economic classes working together as one to escape the apocalypse. Despite the fact
that some people do not agree with this sort of equality, we feel that it is necessary to
promote equality through the media in order prevent discrimination.
4. What pre-production research
did you conduct with them?
We sent out a questionnaire to a wide audience via FaceBook in order to collect
results on what they wanted from our product, what they expected from the genre and
where this audience believed our product should be targeted. We included
questionssuch as:
Our questionnaire can be viewed fully here:

5. How did you use it?
After collecting the results from our questionnaire we reviewed it and
suited the film to the majority vote on each section of the
questionnaire, this insured our target audience got exactly what they
wanted from our product.
We displayed the results of our questionnaire in a Google Document
Spreadsheet so that we could collect the data easily, as shown here:
