Founding[edit]
The company was founded in Hangzhou[16] as Ma explained:
"Taobao City", the main corporate campus for Alibaba Group at Xixi,Hangzhou.
Alibaba Binjiang Campus in Hangzhou, headquarters for Alibaba's B2B service.
One day I was in San Francisco in a coffee shop, and I was thinking Alibaba is a good name. And
then a waitress came, and I said, "Do you know about Alibaba?" And she said yes. I said, "What do
you know about ?", and she said, "Open Sesame". And I said, "Yes, this is the name!" Then I went
onto the street and found 30 people and asked them, "Do you know Alibaba?" People from India,
people from Germany, people from Tokyo and China ... they all knew about Alibaba. Alibaba – open
sesame. Alibaba is a kind, smart business person, and he helped the village. So ... easy to spell, and
globally known. Alibaba opens sesame for small– to medium–sized companies. We also registered

Introduction. Reading Has Been Considered A Great Source
Introduction
Reading has been considered a great source of knowledge for a very long time. Reading does not
merely mean just reading what is written in the piece of paper but it is about understanding what has
been written in order to develop knowledge. Furthermore, it is about exploring other people's
perspective and views and connecting it to our own. Both reading and writing are two essential
skills in Sociology in order to study society and social behaviour.
This assignment will be a reading response essay of two course readings. The body of the essay will
be divided into two parts. The first part of the essay will be a response to each reading, exploring
and discussing the key ideas and claims that each authors makes. The second ... Show more content

Knowing that land is a taonga (treasure) to Māori people, it made me think about the negative
impact it had on them due to not being able to have a control over their own land and gradually
losing their language, culture, and spirituality due to colonisation.
Throughout the reading, the writer listed multiple examples supported with other researches about
the systematic dispossession of Māori land (Wynyard, 2017) which helped me understood and grasp
the ideas that the writer wanted to put across. It has also helped me understand the severity of the
issue on this topic.
Before reading Wynyard's article, I was aware of the general story about how Māori people sold
their land in exchange for guns, clothing, and unfamiliar items that the British settlers had. I came to
know about this information through hearsay when I first arrived in the country and wanted to know
a quick story about New Zealand and Māori people. It was just in the last few years that I was given
more and appropriate information about the true history of Aotearoa New Zealand (hearing it from
Māori's viewpoint). Upon reading this article, I came to realise the suffering that Māori people had
to go through at the time in regards to losing their land and the Government not honouring their part
of the Treaty of Waitangi (Wynyard, 2017). The writer also introduced me to new concepts that
changed my viewpoint as to why Māori people are

The Treaty Of Waitangi / Te Titiri O Waitangi
My topic that I will be discussing is the treaty of Waitangi / Te Titiri o Waitangi. Throughout this
essay I will give an outline of the history and reasons for the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and
briefly discuss the significant differences between the Māori and English translations. Then I will
show understanding of the ways in which the treaty was breached and provide two examples. I will
also provide evidence showing the relationship between these breaches and the effect they have
made on the health and well–being of Māori today. And finally discuss how the Three Principles –
partnership, participation and protection that support The Treaty and how it is used in nursing
practice to reduce the current inequities in health between Māori and the people of Aotearoa.
The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document and a written agreement, in both
Māori and English, which was made between the British Crown and about 500 Māori rangatira. The
document gets its name from the place where it was first signed in the bay of Islands, on 6 February
1840, which is now celebrated as a public holiday. In the late 1830s there were large numbers of
British migrants arriving in New Zealand and plans for extensive settlement to take place. "The
British government was initially unwilling to act, but it eventually realised that annexing the country
could protect Māori and regulate British subjects and secure commercial interests." After the singing
of the treaty New Zealand became

Why Did The Treaty Of Waitangi Was Signed? Essay
In the early 1800s New Zealand was an independent Māori–controlled nation, in 1839; Captain
William Hobson was given the job of bringing sovereignty to the land of New Zealand. The crown
wanted to take part in the growing trade within New Zealand. There were many British missionaries
working and living in New Zealand as residents already. Māori and early visitors did not often get
on. A lot of violence flared up because of alcohol and women as some of the British men who had
been away for long periods of time on boats, having no contact with women they wanted to satisfy
their needs. When British men would come back after long trips they would tend to their needs for
women, whether it would be Māori women or British woman (Lost in Translation, 2009). This is
where the treaty came into question. It would control the over whelming amount of crime in New
Zealand and bring the British law and government into New Zealand.
What was the context in which the Treaty of Waitangi was signed?
As the number of British migrants grew in the late 1830s there were plans for extensive settlement
and large–scale land transactions with Māori. At this time the British government was unwilling to
act on the complaints made by British people in New Zealand, but they eventually realised that
acting on this problem they could protect Māori and regulate British subjects and secure commercial
interests (NZ history 2014).
What were the key promises contained in the Treaty of Waitangi, how these

INTRODUCTION
The Land of New Zealand has shaped its people, as the people have struggled to shape the land. The
nation's two main cultures Maori and Pakeha are as distinct as the forested mountains are from the
crystal clear lakes and roaring rivers, but they are also united and divided by the rugged land they
have conquered and tamed.
In all the cultures of the Pacific region, that of the Maori stands out in its rich stock of plays, dances
in highly–refined and complex arts. Historically, art has spread throughout the whole Maori way of
life, and in this century there has been a conscious effort to preserve – or revive – the traditional
skills of weaving and fibre arts, painting, latticework, carving, tattoo, chant and oratory, as well as
Maori language and customs. The spiritual dimension of Maori art is still strongly felt: the taonga,
or art treasures, of the Maori are not only objects of beauty

Relationship Between Grey And Cameron
The relationship between Grey and Cameron deteriorated rapidly throughout the Waikato Wars.
Grey was constantly searching for one determining knockout blow to defeat Maori forces, while
Cameron was a realist who realised that attacking the Maori Pa head on was suicidal. This
difference in opinion led to the two men arguing constantly which had a profound impact on the
war.
The Waikato Wars (1863–1864) were a component of the New Zealand Wars which were active
from 1845 to 1872. The wars have also commonly been known as the 'Maori Wars' or the 'Land
Wars'. During these wars there was a huge divide in society. Many people debate whether these wars
were over land or sovereignty. The New Zealand wars were a series of individual battles between
the higher government and various Maori tribes.
The Wars were caused by a miss–understanding of ownership between Maori and Pakeha. When the
British settlers came to New Zealand they thought that the Maori were utilising the land like they
should. The settlers wanted to buy the land off the Maori but they refused. But of course, they all
had different views. Maori pass on land from generations and inherit it from their ancestors, whereas
Pakeha can just trade the land more money.
Grey and Cameron's relationship deteriorated hugely during the Invasion of the Waikato. Sir George
Grey (born 1812) made a huge impact on New Zealand during the Waikato Wars. He played a lead
role in the wars between 1863 and 1864.
Grey came to New Zealand

Responsive Reading Assignment – Sociology 101
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the key ideas presented in the two articles written by Poata–
Smith (2004) and Richard Pringle (2007) and to explore how these key ideas link to the central
themes and discourses introduced throughout the duration of the course so far. In sight of the word
limitations, this essay will attempt to cover fewer key ideas highlighted within these texts, but in
much more detail. Some key ideas addressed in this essay include neo–liberalism, class inequalities,
biculturalism, and in part two hegemonic masculinities, gender order and negative male identities.
At the conclusion of this discussion, I will take the opportunity to reflect on my personal
engagement with the two texts.
Evan Poata–Smith (2004) – Maori Protest Politics and the Waitangi Settlement Process
In his article, Poata–Smith (2004) acknowledges that the Crown alongside the New Zealand
Government, although not responsible for the actions of its predecessors, has taken steps to accept
its obligations to the Treaty of Waitangi and to the Maori people and to recognise breaches of the
treaty principles that it has made (p.59). The New Zealand Government, in its attempt to settle past
treaty grievances surrounding wrongful confiscation of land has divided Maori society in two: a
division between the Maori working class and the smaller Maori elite. Through neo–liberal reforms
to the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process, highly represented

A Report On The Les Benefices Du Numerique

Declaration Of The Independence Of New Zealand Essay
Name: Hamza Abutaleb
Student ID: 2143918
First Event
Declaration of the Independence of NZ
1) I chose the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand because of it has great significance.
New Zealand declared its independency from the United Kingdom on the 28th of October 1835 in
Waitangi. It was James Busby, with the help of missionary Henry Williams and William Colenso,
who then prepared a statement to give the northern Maori chiefs to sign after there were rumours
that the United States or France were thinking of claiming New Zealand as their own. The
statement's purpose was to recognise the independency and sovereignty of the New Zealand Maori
tribes. The sketch statement that was signed was written in Maori, but another English translation
was prepared as well.
2) I will be talking about James Busby who played a major role in making New Zealand's
independency possible. James Busby was born in Scotland on the 7th of February 1802. He studied
viticulture in France. After that he moved to Australia. After staying there for a couple of years,
Busby moved with his family to New Zealand after presenting his viticulture journals that he
published and were considered as New Zealand memoir. That granted him an appointment with the
Colonial Office after he presented his work. Then Busty was appointed on March 1832 a New
Zealand British Resident. He arrived to the Bay of Islands on May 1833 and then settled in
Waitangi. Busby's major purpose was to manage and look after the

Piaget 's Theory Of Cognitive Development Essay
When talking about human development, we are referring to the growth of humans in all aspects
throughout their life. In this essay, I will be discussing two types of human development. Cognitive
development, which is to do with the ability to think, remember and reason, and Social
development, which involves relationships and interactions in the world around the individual. I will
focus on how they relate to two significant experiences in my life and how these experiences were
critical to my development as a learner. I will do this by analysing these experiences through
Piaget's theory of cognitive development including key concepts of equilibration, adaptation and
former–operation cognitive stage, and Bronfenbrenner's bioecological systems theory including key
concepts of the microsystem, mesosystem, and macrosystem.
Piaget's theory of cognitive development is the theory I will be using to analyse my first significant
experience. According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, during childhood and
adolescence, a child constructs an understanding of their environment by organising information
into schemas, a schema is basically a group of ideas about an object or an experience. If the
individual comes across an inconsistency, or an object or an experience that is unfamiliar, their
cognitive balance is upset and they begin to seek cognitive balance, this process of seeking balance
is called equilibration. They achieve this equilibration through Adaptation, by either

The Impact Of European Contact On M훮ori Society
Analyse the impact of European contact in Māori between 1642 and prior to the sighing of the
Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.
Between 1642 and prior to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, many European traders and
missionaries arrived, bringing changes for Māori. They impacted the Māori society and introduced
many new things to the Māori like pigs, muskets, tobacco and alcohol. Missionaries also influenced
Māori and introduced Māori to Christianity and to the written language. Europeans changed the
lifestyle of Māori, civilised Māori and taught them farming skills and new types of agricultural
cultivation.
The Europeans influenced the Māori trade. Pre European trade took the form of gift exchange with

Tribes acquired hundreds of muskets and they used it for war. They wanted to focus on producing
goods to trade with Europeans in order to pay for the weapons. However, musket ownership was
most significant when a tribe with muskets fought against a tribe without muskets.
The arrival of the Europeans caused many changes to the Māori society between 1642 and prior to
the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The Europeans brought with them many things to trade;
however, they contributed to fatal impact in New Zealand as they brought with them weapons which
killed a lot of people and enslaved many more as more and more Māori competed for weapons. By
1830 the Māori had learnt a lot about the world. They had learnt the skills of trade with Europeans
and the Māori had missionaries that taught them how to read, write and communicate with the

Jack Ma Leadership Analysis
INTRODUCTION
The objective of this paper is to apply the knowledge learned in class by studying the leadership
characteristics and styles of a leader and what contributed to his/her successes and failures.
In my case I have chosen Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group. He has
become one of the most influential businessmen and is a global example of leadership. However, his
road to success was not easy. He had to overcome failure in several occasions and work hard to
build his own company and become an influential and powerful global leader.
The first thing that will be covered in this paper is his biography. This will help to understand what
kind of person he is, how he was able to arrive to a position of power and give an idea of his traits
and behaviors. Next, an in depth leadership analysis will follow. This analysis will be based on the
theories seen in class.
BIOGRAPHY
Jack Ma was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. He started studying English at an early
age and practiced English every day talking with English speakers at the Hangzhou International
Hotel, 70 minutes by bicycle from home. He made free tours of the city to improve his English for
nine years. He became a pen pal with one of those foreigners, who nicknamed him "Jack" because
he found it difficult to pronounce his Chinese name.
Later in his youth, Ma had trouble attending college. The Chinese entrance exams take place only

An Assignment : Fine Art
Assignment One: Fine Art
What influenced these paintings? Would these same messages translate through time if the paintings
swapped places in history? Fine art is more than just paint on canvas. Historical events, social,
educational and physical experiences of the artist season their work and influence the way the artist
transcribes messages to the viewer, influencing their ability to receive those messages. Two oil
paintings containing the same subject matter can be incredibly similar and yet different in the
influence they have on the viewer. C.F. Goldie's 'Ena Te Papatahi' (1902) and S. Minson's 'Effulgent
Self' (2009) are two such paintings. Both contain realistic portraits of a Maori woman, but painted
over 100 years apart are interpreted very differently by audiences in their time.
Goldie was born in 1870, just 2 years before the end of the last of the New Zealand wars. From
1845 – 1872 many tribes were embroiled in a fight for land rights with the European lead
government. After these wars a large amount of land in the North Island was taken away from the
Māori, displacing them from their homes and forcing them to choose between integrating into a
more European life or to move further away from the newly formed towns. Many Māori lives were
lost during the course of these wars – "Historian James Cowan suggested that over 500 British and
colonial forces and about 250 kūpapa (Māori supporting the government) died. The number killed

Sports Function Of The New Zealand
Just recently I have met a lot of new people here at Catawba College, and I have met people with
different backgrounds, culture, norms, etc. I have already learned a lot from my new friend, Olivia
from New Zealand. Whether it was trying a piece of gum back from her hometown or talking about
the pronunciation of words and new phrases, I 've learned that we have lived two very different lives
due to differences in our cultures. Kiwis (New Zealanders) consider sports to be crucial in their
country. Sports function in a very similar way in New Zealand as to the way they do here in
America. New Zealand is located in the South Western Pacific Ocean, just south of Australia. New
Zealand has been its country since the late 19th century. The country has governed itself since the
year of 1853. There are several different sports that America is not very familiar with. For example,
in New Zealand, Netball is a very popular women 's sport. Netball, presumably the largest women 's
team sport in the country, with approximately 137,000 registered players and 400,000 playing
recreationally or at a secondary school. Netball is one of the preliminary forms of basketball
emerging in the 19th century. The most similar sport in America that we have to Netball is
Basketball.
Although when compared, netball and basketball can appear to be very different in style and play,
there are more similarities than one may realize. In netball, you have two nets just like in basketball.

New Zealand Ministry Of Justice Essay
On 6 February 1840, representatives of the British Crown and numerous Maori chiefs united in the
ceremony of the signing of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi / Treaty of Waitangi documentation in the Bay of
Islands, New Zealand, (New Zealand Ministry of Justice, 2015). (1) This, signified the official
colonisation of New Zealand and with this the promise of certain principles that were to be upheld
by the British law, including that of Protection, Participation and Partnership, for all citizens now
unified under the British Crown (MOH, 2000b). (2)
Controversially, due to translational implications the true intention and meaning of the Te Tiriti o
Waitangi / Treaty of Waitangi has been often contested due to the Maori losing much of their
Autonomy along with their cultural history, this adversely affecting Maori spiritual, mental,
emotional, and physical health outcomes, both individually as well as within the family structure,
which is still evident 175 years later, (New Zealand Ministry of Justice, 2015). (1).
Along with colonisation, many foreign diseases such as measles, mumps, tuberculosis and
whooping cough, that infiltrated New Zealand, proving detrimental for Maori as their immune
systems were yet to develop antibodies and immunity to the newly introduced pathogens, (Pool,
2012). Concurrently, this resulted in a high morbidity and mortality rate around the end of the
1800s, as according to statistics, the Maori population declined in number from approximately
100,000 in 1767,

The Importance Of A Transformational Leader As One Essay
Coleman (2005) describes a transformational leader as one who is a role model, building capacity in
others who follow. A leader with high standards of ethical and moral conduct.
These ideas have guided my leadership. Working with teachers I provide examples and feedback for
others to build on. As a principal, responsible for change, action research is an important component
of transforming our school and community culture. Thus, action research plays a strong influence in
the search for democracy and cross–cultural leadership in my work environment.
Context/ Background.
Unearthing my own Maori and Pakeha identity has led me on a journey of discovery and interest in
early New Zealand social anthropology and ethnography. The literature of Elsdon
Best, Edward Tregear and S. Percy Smith has helped shape the hegemony of post–colonial New
Zealand. Indeed, much of what I learned in high school about the history of New
Zealand came from their ethnographic research.

I am also fascinated by the on–going discourse of post– colonial criticism by researchers such as
Salmond, Binney and Sissons of the early ethnographic work. And, further to this, my interest
follows into the juxtaposition of cultural considerations surrounding kaupapa Maori – by Maori for
Maori – with the notion of Pakeha contribution, 'critical friends' towards such research. I will

Evolution of the Characters in The Color Purple
The most important aspect of The Color Purple is the growth and maturity of each individual. There
is a huge transition of many of the characters from the beginning to the end of the novel. This
evolution of the characters is a recurring theme that runs throughout the novel and can be tracked by
Celie's letters. The women struggle for freedom in a society where they are inferior to men. Towards
the end of the novel one can sense the slow evolution towards the increasing empowerment of
women.
The strongest example of women's empowerment is Celie's character. She's a victim of racism, men,
sexual roles, and social injustices. Celie begins the novel completely powerless, ... Show more

(lamda, 1) Shug's character symbolizes the independence these women had at a time when the
independence of a black woman was nonexistent. Many women blues performers sang about
breaking away from traditional society and gaining their liberty. For example, Bessie Smith's song,
'Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do (Bessie Smith Collection, Track 2), she preaches.
The use of names throughout the novel is also a way to show the power roles between the
characters. This can be seen by the fact that Celie is unable to call Mr. _______ by his first name,
and in fact hardly even recognizes the
name when Shug uses it. By not calling Mr. _______ by his first name Celie lacks any power over
him and is forced into her role of a submissive wife.
As time goes on Celie is finally able to break away from the coercion of her life and leave her
husband. She starts her own business sewing pants, which is one way she indicates her freedom.
This highlights the fact that she has gained more individuality and is willing to assert herself. She
has now become able to recognize the importance of her existence. Celie proves this when she
writes, "I'm pore, I'm black, I may be ugly and can't cook, a voice say to everything listening. But
I'm here."
At the end of the novel Celie has finally created a permanent life for herself. The way she interacts
with the other characters and attitude towards things has

Analysis Of The Poem ' Whale Rider ' Essay
This is a story about how a Maori girl Kahu Paikea will eventually overcome the obstacles of
tradition and reality. From the film you can see this old tribe is still has serious patriarchal
consciousness, the rules have always been used to break, the life needs self–master. The girl did not
give up the goal, she used her actions inherited the chief 's miracle. Legend is often inspirational,
because with spiritual power, or implied some kind of mystery. If some kind of legend with its
inherent rationality, will produce a good story. The "Whale Rider" is such a good film, the open sea,
the distant shout, an island Maori, their ancestors are riding a whale come. Certainly, an ancient

prerequisite for the achievement of good works. In "Whale Rider", Caro is to seize this
contradiction, thus creating a legendary classic. First of all, a legend about the Maori, more than

New Zealand Cultural And Ethical Consideration Essay
New Zealand Cultural and Ethical consideration
For the ethical considerations the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (n.d.) summarized that
there are three basic ethical principles relevant to research involving human subjects. The three
things stated by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (n.d.) are respect for persons,
beneficence and justice. For the respect for the person each individual should be treated as
autonomous agents as such the researcher should ensure that the participants of the research
received a full disclosure of the nature of the study, risk, benefits and alternatives with a decent
opportunity to ask questions. For the ones with diminished authority or those with either their
mental or physical faculties are limited. They should not be forced to participate in the research. For
the beneficence the researcher should maximize the benefits of the study while limiting the negative
effects on the participants. For the justice part of ethics there should be fairness in the distribution of
participants and there should be equitable selection off participants. For justice the researcher should
not withhold any benefit the person should be entitled without any god reason. According to the
American Psychological Association(2003) there are five principles for research ethics these
principles help the researcher avoid problems in ethics. The five principles for research as stated by

The Land Of The Long White Cloud Essay
Aotearoa, "The land of the long white cloud", is known today by many people as New Zealand, the
third most beautiful country in the world. If one is planning on moving there or visiting, it definitely
a country that will not disappoint. New Zealand is known for many things, especially their
outstanding food and their successful economic situation. During 800 C.E. a group of people from
Polynesia, made their way over to New Zealand. In the 17th century the same group of Polynesians
evolved as the Maori, a spiritual group. The Maori are responsible for New Zealand's original name
Aotearoa, "The land of the long white cloud". However, that name was changed when a Dutch
explorer landed on their land, he changed the name to New Zealand, after a Dutch province. When
the Europeans came to New Zealand, the Maori tribe was pushed out of their homes, farms and
businesses. It was not until 1840 that Britain signed the Treaty of Waitangi, which protected the
Maori tribe for fear of the Europeans. New Zealand was a colony governed by the British until
1907. Now the queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth, only has a small amount of control
over New Zealand. The Maori culture still exists in New Zealand today. Visitors who go to New
Zealand can experience their food, daily rituals, and song and dance if they would like to learn more
about their culture. The New Zealand rugby team before every game performs the traditional Maori
war dance, Kapa Haka, to scare their opponent. The

Alibaba- Corporate Advantage and Competiton
How does Alibaba group create corporate advantage? (Why are the businesses under one roof?) Is
this corporate advantage sustainable?
Is the current degree of competition amongst the business units appropriate? Do you think Jack Ma

The Alibaba group has thrived in the Chinese e–commerce sector from its inception in 1998. They
currently account for over 70% of online shopping in China and delivered annual revenues of $636
million in the 12month period ending June 2009 (case p1–2). Alibaba's successes are due to multiple

Ma has created corporate advantage through championing internal competition between
subsidiaries, which although report directly to himself, are run as separate business units under the
Alibaba Group. Ma provides each subsidiary with its own board of directors, operating managers
and executive team to encourage competition (case p.7). Executives are rewarded through business
autonomy, in conjunction employees are incentivised through stock options linked to group
performance (case p.9).
The principal way in which Alibaba Group's organisational structure creates corporate advantage is
the flexibility gained from its decentralised nature. Paired with this structure, Alibaba's shared value
of 'embrace change' puts emphasis on innovative and adaptive practice (exhibit 11 case). This notion
is best explained by CFO Joseph Tsai who stated "We sacrificed forced synergies in order to quickly
pursue subsidiary opportunities" (case p.9). Alipay provides a prime example of the strength of
Alibaba's decentralised structure. Launched in 2004 as part of Taobao, Alipay held consumer's
payments until purchased goods were received, thus eliminating settlement risk. Initially incubated,
Alipay became fundamental to Taobao's growth and soon reached critical mass, this presented
opportunities beyond the internal organisation leading to Ma's decision to separate Alipay from
Taobao as an independent

Review : Diagnostic Pre Implantaire

l'enfant.

Visual Representations Of Maori Women Essay
This essay examines visual representations of Maori women within the photographic domain. I will
examine and compare three examples of how Maori women were represented within the European
domain in the early twentieth century paying particular attention to the research done by Jacqui
Sutton Beets in her book ?Bitter Sweet: Indigenous women in the Pacific?. Investigating the
meanings and functions based on the ideologies of the time as well as the importance these
representations have held within a social and cultural context for Maori Women and cultural
identity. In comparison I will also examine two Maori artists that have represented Maori women
within the contemporary domain and how the codes and conventions used in portrait photography
have transformed the stereotype construct of early colonial imperialism.
Early representations of New Zealanders are often associated with the notions of hardworking, no.8
wire thinking people that live in an untouched natural environment. These generalisation?s stem
from stereotypes that derived from the pioneers who came to New Zealand and colonized an
undiscovered land and developed a nation. Arguably this is the western view of what New Zealand
identity is. Social change over time has seen New Zealanders transform from a nostalgic L&P
commercial (which ironically mainly show white men) into a multi–cultural, sophisticated,
adventurous people or as Prime Minister John Key has been quoted ?loyal and proud?. A romantic

Traditional Beliefs Of The M Ā Ori And The Rural Urban...
Whenua is the Māori term for land, it also refers to placenta (notion of birth). Land was and still is
extremely important to the Māori people. From the time the Maori people set foot on Aotearoa, their
way of life is highly revolved around the land. They have an immeasurable respect for the land and
it holds the utmost significance. This essay will explore traditional beliefs of whenua such as the
creation myth and the importance of Tāne. It will also discuss the importance to the Māori and how
the loss of land (after the Treaty of Waitangi) played such a significant role. It will also explore the
location of Māori and the rural urban drift, from the 1940s and still very much evident in today's
society, as well as the influence of Pakeha and other cultures. My theory is that the significance of
the land has changed overtime from traditional usage; to the way it is today. The traditional beliefs
such as Māori myths play an important role to whenua. The creation myth involving the separation
of Papatūānuku and Ranginui created light in a world, which was previously full of darkness. The
gap created from Papa and Rangi created the land and the sky. In most creation traditions Tāne–
mahuta separated the earth and the sky. He is highly significant as he is the god of the forest. In
forests trees are often seen as Tāne–mahuta reaching up to split the earth and sky. "All life is seen as
being born from the womb of Papatūānuku, under the sea. The lands that appear above water

The Treaty Of Waitangi : A Contract Between Maori And The...
TASK 2
The Treaty of Waitangi is a contract between Maori and the Crown which ensures them protection
from Crown (Britain). In return, Maori handed over the ownership of land to the Crown. It came in
to existence on 6th February 1840. The three main principles of Treaty of Waitangi include
partnership, protection and participation. All these principles have great significance in nursing
practice as well as nursing education. Since 1989, the Nursing Council of New Zealand has also
given great significance to Treaty in health sector (Hally, 2009). To begin with, the principle of
partnership enables Maori, independence and power over their health. It also provides them freedom
over their thoughts, action and policies related to health care (Nursing council of New Zealand
[NCNZ] 2011). Partnership is very important for a nurse working in New Zealand and can be
achieved through building a good therapeutic relationship with the client, respecting their cultural
values, giving them choices and involving them in decision making (Hally, 2009). Moreover,
application of partnership in nursing care includes working together with a common goal to obtain a
better health outcome. Good cooperation, awareness of the client's culture and effective
communication is mandatory for a nurse to attain a possible outcome (Wepa, 2005). To illustrate, in
a community setting, a Maori couple came with their child with obesity and seek help. The duty of

The Indian Of The New Zealand Wars
The land wars also known as the New Zealand wars was a series of armed conflicts which took
place in New Zealand from 1845 to 1872. This occurred between the British/colonial government
and the indigenous Maori. During Captain Cook's earlier visit, he recommended New Zealand as an
ideal area for Europeans to settle, in particular, the Bay of Islands. The British government at the
time payed no attention to Captain Cooks recommendations. In 1810 the American and European
whalers as well as traders began visiting the Bay of Islands which created a settlement called
Kororareka. Russell, which was the first capital of the country, quickly became the fifth largest
settlement in New Zealand filled with brothels and grog shops. The Ngapuhi tribe which was from
the North region of Auckland, were able to trade with the Local Europeans. Furthermore, because of
this the Maori came into contact with much needed and devastating inter–tribal war weapons such
as the Musket. Due to this trade amongst the Maori and Europeans, the Ngapuhi tribe were the first
tribe to obtain such weapons. In the 1840s there was a written agreement between the British crown
–the monarch, and more than 500 Maori chiefs. The treaty is made up of 3 articles and was written
in 2 versions– Maori and English. In the first article written in English, it says that Maori leaders
gave the Queen all rights and powers of 'sovereignty' over their land. However in the Maori version

Introduction: Alibaba Group Holding Limited is a Chinese e–commerce company that provides

Education Should Be A Reflection Of The Context
According to the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education [MOE], 2007), education should
be a reflection of the context, which caters to all students regardless of background, ability and
gender to create a diverse learner that is provided with equal opportunity to succeed. However, if we
reflect on the history of education, it has favored one culture over the other. Statistics is a testimony
to this as it shows us 35 percent of Maori gained NCEA level 3 qualification or above in comparison
to 57 percent of non–Maori who gained NCEA level 3 qualification or above (MOE, 2009). As of
June 30 2012, statistics show that 51 percent of all prisoners were of Maori ethnicity (New Zealand
Statistics, 2012). In 2014 it was revealed that Maori had the second highest unemployment rate
(New Zealand Statistics, 2014). In order to understand the meaning of these statistics one must look
at the history of New Zealand education and ask thought provoking questions such as why is there a
disparity of achievement between Maori and non–Maori? What happens to those who fall through
the cracks of education? How have Maori come to be 'at risk'?
This essay will attempt to answer these questions by looking at the important changes in the
education system and how they affected Maori education. These influential changes include the
introduction of schooling systems such as 1867 Native Schools and the establishment of the 1877
Education Act. I will then look at the effects of assimilation

Reading does not merely mean just reading what is written in the piece of paper but it is about understanding what has been written in order to develop knowledge. Furthermore, it is about exploring other people's perspective and views and connecting it to our own. Both reading and writing are two essential skills in Sociology in order to study society and social behaviour. This assignment will be a reading response essay of two course readings. The body of the essay will be divided into two parts. The first part of the essay will be a response to each reading, exploring and discussing the key ideas and claims that each authors makes. Knowing that land is a taonga (treasure) to Māori people, it made me think about the negative impact it had on them due to not being able to have a control over their own land and gradually losing their language, culture, and spirituality due to colonisation. Throughout the reading, the writer listed multiple examples supported with other researches about the systematic dispossession of Māori land (Wynyard, 2017) which helped me understood and grasp the ideas that the writer wanted to put across. It has also helped me understand the severity of the issue on this topic. Before reading Wynyard's article, I was aware of the general story about how Māori people sold their land in exchange for guns, clothing, and unfamiliar items that the British settlers had. I came to know about this information through hearsay when I first arrived in the country and wanted to know a quick story about New Zealand and Māori people. It was just in the last few years that I was given more and appropriate information about the true history of Aotearoa New Zealand (hearing it from Māori's viewpoint). Upon reading this article, I came to realise the suffering that Māori people had to go through at the time in regards to losing their land and the Government not honouring their part of the Treaty of Waitangi (Wynyard, 2017). The writer also introduced me to new concepts that changed my viewpoint as to why Māori people are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Treaty Of Waitangi / Te Titiri O Waitangi My topic that I will be discussing is the treaty of Waitangi / Te Titiri o Waitangi. Throughout this essay I will give an outline of the history and reasons for the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and briefly discuss the significant differences between the Māori and English translations. Then I will show understanding of the ways in which the treaty was breached and provide two examples. I will also provide evidence showing the relationship between these breaches and the effect they have made on the health and well–being of Māori today. And finally discuss how the Three Principles – partnership, participation and protection that support The Treaty and how it is used in nursing practice to reduce the current inequities in health between Māori and the people of Aotearoa. The Treaty of Waitangi is New Zealand's founding document and a written agreement, in both Māori and English, which was made between the British Crown and about 500 Māori rangatira. The document gets its name from the place where it was first signed in the bay of Islands, on 6 February 1840, which is now celebrated as a public holiday. In the late 1830s there were large numbers of British migrants arriving in New Zealand and plans for extensive settlement to take place. "The British government was initially unwilling to act, but it eventually realised that annexing the country could protect Māori and regulate British subjects and secure commercial interests." • 6. Why Did The Treaty Of Waitangi Was Signed? Essay In the early 1800s New Zealand was an independent Māori–controlled nation, in 1839; Captain William Hobson was given the job of bringing sovereignty to the land of New Zealand. The crown wanted to take part in the growing trade within New Zealand. There were many British missionaries working and living in New Zealand as residents already. Māori and early visitors did not often get on. A lot of violence flared up because of alcohol and women as some of the British men who had been away for long periods of time on boats, having no contact with women they wanted to satisfy their needs. When British men would come back after long trips they would tend to their needs for women, whether it would be Māori women or British woman (Lost in Translation, 2009). This is where the treaty came into question. It would control the over whelming amount of crime in New Zealand and bring the British law and government into New Zealand. What was the context in which the Treaty of Waitangi was signed? As the number of British migrants grew in the late 1830s there were plans for extensive settlement and large–scale land transactions with Māori. At this time the British government was unwilling to act on the complaints made by British people in New Zealand, but they eventually realised that acting on this problem they could protect Māori and regulate British subjects and secure commercial interests (NZ history 2014). The nation's two main cultures Maori and Pakeha are as distinct as the forested mountains are from the crystal clear lakes and roaring rivers, but they are also united and divided by the rugged land they have conquered and tamed. In all the cultures of the Pacific region, that of the Maori stands out in its rich stock of plays, dances in highly–refined and complex arts. Historically, art has spread throughout the whole Maori way of life, and in this century there has been a conscious effort to preserve – or revive – the traditional skills of weaving and fibre arts, painting, latticework, carving, tattoo, chant and oratory, as well as Maori language and customs. The spiritual dimension of Maori art is still strongly felt: the taonga, or art treasures, of the Maori are not only objects of beauty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Relationship Between Grey And Cameron The relationship between Grey and Cameron deteriorated rapidly throughout the Waikato Wars. Grey was constantly searching for one determining knockout blow to defeat Maori forces, while Cameron was a realist who realised that attacking the Maori Pa head on was suicidal. This difference in opinion led to the two men arguing constantly which had a profound impact on the war. The Waikato Wars (1863–1864) were a component of the New Zealand Wars which were active from 1845 to 1872. The wars have also commonly been known as the 'Maori Wars' or the 'Land Wars'. During these wars there was a huge divide in society. Many people debate whether these wars were over land or sovereignty. The New Zealand wars were a series of individual battles between the higher government and various Maori tribes. The Wars were caused by a miss–understanding of ownership between Maori and Pakeha. When the British settlers came to New Zealand they thought that the Maori were utilising the land like they should. The settlers wanted to buy the land off the Maori but they refused. But of course, they all had different views. Maori pass on land from generations and inherit it from their ancestors, whereas Pakeha can just trade the land more money. Grey and Cameron's relationship deteriorated hugely during the Invasion of the Waikato. Sir George Grey (born 1812) made a huge impact on New Zealand during the Waikato Wars. He played a lead role in the wars between 1863 and 1864. Grey came to New Zealand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
• 10. The Key Ideas Presented By Poata Smith ( 2004 ) And... Responsive Reading Assignment – Sociology 101 The purpose of this essay is to discuss the key ideas presented in the two articles written by Poata– Smith (2004) and Richard Pringle (2007) and to explore how these key ideas link to the central themes and discourses introduced throughout the duration of the course so far. In sight of the word limitations, this essay will attempt to cover fewer key ideas highlighted within these texts, but in much more detail. Some key ideas addressed in this essay include neo–liberalism, class inequalities, biculturalism, and in part two hegemonic masculinities, gender order and negative male identities. At the conclusion of this discussion, I will take the opportunity to reflect on my personal engagement with the two texts. Evan Poata–Smith (2004) – Maori Protest Politics and the Waitangi Settlement Process In his article, Poata–Smith (2004) acknowledges that the Crown alongside the New Zealand Government, although not responsible for the actions of its predecessors, has taken steps to accept its obligations to the Treaty of Waitangi and to the Maori people and to recognise breaches of the treaty principles that it has made (p.59). The New Zealand Government, in its attempt to settle past treaty grievances surrounding wrongful confiscation of land has divided Maori society in two: a division between the Maori working class and the smaller Maori elite. • 12. Declaration Of The Independence Of New Zealand Essay Name: Hamza Abutaleb Student ID: 2143918 First Event Declaration of the Independence of NZ 1) I chose the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand because of it has great significance. New Zealand declared its independency from the United Kingdom on the 28th of October 1835 in Waitangi. It was James Busby, with the help of missionary Henry Williams and William Colenso, who then prepared a statement to give the northern Maori chiefs to sign after there were rumours that the United States or France were thinking of claiming New Zealand as their own. The statement's purpose was to recognise the independency and sovereignty of the New Zealand Maori tribes. The sketch statement that was signed was written in Maori, but another English translation was prepared as well. 2) I will be talking about James Busby who played a major role in making New Zealand's independency possible. James Busby was born in Scotland on the 7th of February 1802. He studied viticulture in France. After that he moved to Australia. After staying there for a couple of years, Busby moved with his family to New Zealand after presenting his viticulture journals that he published and were considered as New Zealand memoir. That granted him an appointment with the Colonial Office after he presented his work. Then Busty was appointed on March 1832 a New Zealand British Resident. He arrived to the Bay of Islands on May 1833 and then settled in Waitangi. Busby's major purpose was to manage and look after the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Piaget 's Theory Of Cognitive Development Essay When talking about human development, we are referring to the growth of humans in all aspects throughout their life. In this essay, I will be discussing two types of human development. Cognitive development, which is to do with the ability to think, remember and reason, and Social development, which involves relationships and interactions in the world around the individual. I will focus on how they relate to two significant experiences in my life and how these experiences were critical to my development as a learner. I will do this by analysing these experiences through Piaget's theory of cognitive development including key concepts of equilibration, adaptation and former–operation cognitive stage, and Bronfenbrenner's bioecological systems theory including key concepts of the microsystem, mesosystem, and macrosystem. Piaget's theory of cognitive development is the theory I will be using to analyse my first significant experience. According to Piaget's theory of cognitive development, during childhood and adolescence, a child constructs an understanding of their environment by organising information into schemas, a schema is basically a group of ideas about an object or an experience. If the individual comes across an inconsistency, or an object or an experience that is unfamiliar, their cognitive balance is upset and they begin to seek cognitive balance, this process of seeking balance is called equilibration. They achieve this equilibration through Adaptation, by either ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fine art is more than just paint on canvas. Historical events, social, educational and physical experiences of the artist season their work and influence the way the artist transcribes messages to the viewer, influencing their ability to receive those messages. Two oil paintings containing the same subject matter can be incredibly similar and yet different in the influence they have on the viewer. C.F. Goldie's 'Ena Te Papatahi' (1902) and S. Minson's 'Effulgent Self' (2009) are two such paintings. Both contain realistic portraits of a Maori woman, but painted over 100 years apart are interpreted very differently by audiences in their time. Goldie was born in 1870, just 2 years before the end of the last of the New Zealand wars. From 1845 – 1872 many tribes were embroiled in a fight for land rights with the European lead government. After these wars a large amount of land in the North Island was taken away from the Māori, displacing them from their homes and forcing them to choose between integrating into a more European life or to move further away from the newly formed towns. It was not until 1840 that Britain signed the Treaty of Waitangi, which protected the Maori tribe for fear of the Europeans. New Zealand was a colony governed by the British until 1907. Now the queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth, only has a small amount of control over New Zealand. The Maori culture still exists in New Zealand today. Visitors who go to New Zealand can experience their food, daily rituals, and song and dance if they would like to learn more about their culture. • 30. Alibaba- Corporate Advantage and Competiton How does Alibaba group create corporate advantage? (Why are the businesses under one roof?) Is this corporate advantage sustainable? Is the current degree of competition amongst the business units appropriate? Do you think Jack Ma should encourage more cooperation? If so how? The Alibaba group has thrived in the Chinese e–commerce sector from its inception in 1998. They currently account for over 70% of online shopping in China and delivered annual revenues of $636 million in the 12month period ending June 2009 (case p1–2). Alibaba's successes are due to multiple factors that have allowed them to create corporate advantage, and thus establish market leadership in China (Case p1). Ma has created corporate advantage through championing internal competition between subsidiaries, which although report directly to himself, are run as separate business units under the Alibaba Group. Ma provides each subsidiary with its own board of directors, operating managers and executive team to encourage competition (case p.7). Executives are rewarded through business autonomy, in conjunction employees are incentivised through stock options linked to group performance (case p.9). The principal way in which Alibaba Group's organisational structure creates corporate advantage is the flexibility gained from its decentralised nature. Paired with this structure, Alibaba's shared value of 'embrace change' puts emphasis on innovative and adaptive practice (exhibit 11 case). This notion is best explained by CFO Joseph Tsai who stated "We sacrificed forced synergies in order to quickly pursue subsidiary opportunities" (case p.9). Alipay provides a prime example of the strength of Alibaba's decentralised structure. Launched in 2004 as part of Taobao, Alipay held consumer's payments until purchased goods were received, thus eliminating settlement risk. Initially incubated, Alipay became fundamental to Taobao's growth and soon reached critical mass, this presented opportunities beyond the internal organisation leading to Ma's decision to separate Alipay from Taobao as an independent ... • 32. Visual Representations Of Maori Women Essay This essay examines visual representations of Maori women within the photographic domain. I will examine and compare three examples of how Maori women were represented within the European domain in the early twentieth century paying particular attention to the research done by Jacqui Sutton Beets in her book ?Bitter Sweet: Indigenous women in the Pacific?. Investigating the meanings and functions based on the ideologies of the time as well as the importance these representations have held within a social and cultural context for Maori Women and cultural identity. In comparison I will also examine two Maori artists that have represented Maori women within the contemporary domain and how the codes and conventions used in portrait photography have transformed the stereotype construct of early colonial imperialism. Early representations of New Zealanders are often associated with the notions of hardworking, no.8 wire thinking people that live in an untouched natural environment. These generalisation?s stem from stereotypes that derived from the pioneers who came to New Zealand and colonized an undiscovered land and developed a nation. Arguably this is the western view of what New Zealand identity is. Social change over time has seen New Zealanders transform from a nostalgic L&P commercial (which ironically mainly show white men) into a multi–cultural, sophisticated, adventurous people or as Prime Minister John Key has been quoted ?loyal and proud?. • 34. Traditional Beliefs Of The M ƒÄ Ori And The Rural Urban... Whenua is the Māori term for land, it also refers to placenta (notion of birth). Land was and still is extremely important to the Māori people. From the time the Maori people set foot on Aotearoa, their way of life is highly revolved around the land. They have an immeasurable respect for the land and it holds the utmost significance. This essay will explore traditional beliefs of whenua such as the creation myth and the importance of Tāne. It will also discuss the importance to the Māori and how the loss of land (after the Treaty of Waitangi) played such a significant role. It will also explore the location of Māori and the rural urban drift, from the 1940s and still very much evident in today's society, as well as the influence of Pakeha and other cultures. My theory is that the significance of the land has changed overtime from traditional usage; to the way it is today. The traditional beliefs such as Māori myths play an important role to whenua. The creation myth involving the separation of Papatūānuku and Ranginui created light in a world, which was previously full of darkness. The gap created from Papa and Rangi created the land and the sky. In most creation traditions Tāne– mahuta separated the earth and the sky. He is highly significant as he is the god of the forest. In forests trees are often seen as Tāne–mahuta reaching up to split the earth and sky. "All life is seen as being born from the womb of Papatūānuku, under the sea. • 35. The Treaty Of Waitangi : A Contract Between Maori And The... TASK 2 The Treaty of Waitangi is a contract between Maori and the Crown which ensures them protection from Crown (Britain). In return, Maori handed over the ownership of land to the Crown. It came in to existence on 6th February 1840. The three main principles of Treaty of Waitangi include partnership, protection and participation. All these principles have great significance in nursing practice as well as nursing education. Since 1989, the Nursing Council of New Zealand has also given great significance to Treaty in health sector (Hally, 2009). To begin with, the principle of partnership enables Maori, independence and power over their health. It also provides them freedom over their thoughts, action and policies related to health care (Nursing council of New Zealand [NCNZ] 2011). Partnership is very important for a nurse working in New Zealand and can be achieved through building a good therapeutic relationship with the client, respecting their cultural values, giving them choices and involving them in decision making (Hally, 2009). Moreover, application of partnership in nursing care includes working together with a common goal to obtain a better health outcome. Good cooperation, awareness of the client's culture and effective communication is mandatory for a nurse to attain a possible outcome (Wepa, 2005). • 36. The Indian Of The New Zealand Wars The land wars also known as the New Zealand wars was a series of armed conflicts which took place in New Zealand from 1845 to 1872. This occurred between the British/colonial government and the indigenous Maori. During Captain Cook's earlier visit, he recommended New Zealand as an ideal area for Europeans to settle, in particular, the Bay of Islands. The British government at the time payed no attention to Captain Cooks recommendations. In 1810 the American and European whalers as well as traders began visiting the Bay of Islands which created a settlement called Kororareka. Russell, which was the first capital of the country, quickly became the fifth largest settlement in New Zealand filled with brothels and grog shops. The Ngapuhi tribe which was from the North region of Auckland, were able to trade with the Local Europeans. Furthermore, because of this the Maori came into contact with much needed and devastating inter–tribal war weapons such as the Musket. Due to this trade amongst the Maori and Europeans, the Ngapuhi tribe were the first tribe to obtain such weapons. In the 1840s there was a written agreement between the British crown –the monarch, and more than 500 Maori chiefs. The treaty is made up of 3 articles and was written in 2 versions– Maori and English. In the first article written in English, it says that Maori leaders gave the Queen all rights and powers of 'sovereignty' over their land. • 39. Education Should Be A Reflection Of The Context According to the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education [MOE], 2007), education should be a reflection of the context, which caters to all students regardless of background, ability and gender to create a diverse learner that is provided with equal opportunity to succeed. However, if we reflect on the history of education, it has favored one culture over the other. Statistics is a testimony to this as it shows us 35 percent of Maori gained NCEA level 3 qualification or above in comparison to 57 percent of non–Maori who gained NCEA level 3 qualification or above (MOE, 2009). As of June 30 2012, statistics show that 51 percent of all prisoners were of Maori ethnicity (New Zealand Statistics, 2012). In 2014 it was revealed that Maori had the second highest unemployment rate (New Zealand Statistics, 2014). In order to understand the meaning of these statistics one must look at the history of New Zealand education and ask thought provoking questions such as why is there a disparity of achievement between Maori and non–Maori? What happens to those who fall through the cracks of education? How have Maori come to be 'at risk'? This essay will attempt to answer these questions by looking at the important changes in the education system and how they affected Maori education. These influential changes include the introduction of schooling systems such as 1867 Native Schools and the establishment of the 1877 Education Act. I will then look at the effects of assimilation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
