USING A CARD CATALOG
87
Good day dear learner. This is another day that we can learn
skills in English. I hope that you will have fun as we learn together.
The skill that we will learn today is about using a Card Catalog.
This skill is needed when you do some researches in libraries and
museums.
Have you gone to the library? Do you find it easy to locate or find
a book that you want to read? Today let us presume that we are in the
library. It is a place where you can find many books, atlas, maps and
other references. It is very difficult to locate books in a place which is
full of books. So, let us learn to find them easier.
Directions: Read each question below then choose the correct answer.
Write the letter or your choice.
1. Why is a card catalog important?
a. It teaches about the library.
b. It helps locate books in the library easily.
c. It guides one on how to refer to books.
2. What can help you to locate books in the library easily and
quickly?
a. card catalog
b. borrower’s card
c. identification card

3. What kind of cards are needed on fiction?
a. author and title card
b. title card
c. title, author and subject cards
4. If you want a book on a special subject such as boxing, what
kind of card will you use?
a. title card
b. subject card
c. author card
5. How are the cards arranged?
a. in alphabetical order
b. in chronological order
c. in numerical order
After the learning points we will go back to the items above and
check if our answers are correct.
How is the card catalog used?
These numbers are part of the ‘Dewey Decimal System’
“They are the books Call Numbers.”
All libraries using the Dewey Decimal System use the same
pattern for filing books. The system divides all non-fiction books into
the main groups, each is represented by numbers.
0-999 General Work such as libraries, computers, etc.
100-199 Philosophy
200-299 Religion
300-399 Social Sciences
400-499 Languages
500-599 Pure Science-Math, Astronomy, Chemistry, etc
600-699 Applied Science such as Medicine, Engineering etc.
Let’s Study This
89
Study the figure below:
The cabinet is a card catalog. Inside are index cards which can
help you locate books for different subjects.
An index card looks like this :
The cards reflect the data of the book. It can be a title card,
subject card or author card.
A - Aa Eg - Fe Mi - Na
Ap – Ba Fr - Fu Ne - Op
Ca - Co Ha - Ho Ru - So
Cr - Cu Hu - In Sp - Ti
90
Read and remember :
1. If you want a particular book and know its title, look in the drawer
that covers the first word (except a, an , the) of the title.
2. If you cannot remember the title of a particular book but you
know the name of the author, look in the drawer where his last
name would be filed.
3. If you want a book about a special subject such as basketball,
look under that word. There will be a subject card with that label
for each book that the library has about basketball.
4. Copy the call number, the title card and the name of the author.
5. Find the section in the library where the books have the upper
number as the call number of the book you want.
6. Look at the lower part of the call number. Look on the book on
the shelves until you find the right capital letter, number, and
small letter given in the call number.
Study the following samples.

How is the Author Card different from the Subject Card?
How is the Subject Card different from the Title card?
An Author Card reflects the name of the author first like Abadilla,
Domingo.
A Subject Card reflects the name of the subject first, eg. Family –
Philippines.
92
The parts of the author card tell you the data that you are looking
for.
The author is written first because this is the most important in
the book.
This will help you locate the book if the author is familiar.
Although it contains some other important data but is given
emphasis so it is called an author card.

Let’s Do More
95
Now, before going to the last activity let us always
remember…
A card catalog is a complete, alphabetically arranged
sets of cards on which are listed all books in the library.
Important information about a book are contained in each
card. The cards are usually classified in sets: title, author,
subject.
The cards are filed in the cabinet of drawers, with each
drawer labeled to show what part of the alphabet it covers.
Each non-fiction book is listed on three kinds of card:
a. title card b. an author card c. a subject card.
Each book of fiction has two cards, an author card and
a title card.
Each card has on its upper-left-hand corner the call
number of the book that it covers.
Brief notations are found on the card that tell
important facts about the book.
This time you are now ready for the final activity.
