Shots
1. Opening Shot
I decided to film my opening shot in a way
that would immediately introduce the
alcoholism of my character as I wanted this
to be at the forefront of the video throughout.
By filming the alcohol after having seen the
protagonist the two have been directly linked
leading to the audience concluding that she
has been drinking the alcohol. Also the fact
that my video opens with my protagonist
awake it also creates the sense that the
alcohol caused her to pass out which
introduces her problem to the video.
I decided to pan up the body of my actress as
a way to introduce her as a way to create a
slow reveal of my character that would be in
time with the song creating a consistency
between the two and also causing much of
the opening instrumental to be taken up by
this shot which fits with many music videos
in that the opening shot is one of the longest
as it introduces the video to the audience.
2. Dissolves
At a couple points in my video I featured
moments where my character would fade
around the same place. I did this to represent
time passing which helps to represent the
dissolving of my characters life as she has been
taken over by the pain and alcohol. By framing
my shot in this way I believe my character’s
emotions have been revealed to the audience
with it suggesting that her pain is so strong
that she spends most of her time sat around
drinking, trying to distract herself from the
pain she’s feeling.
The inspiration for these shots came from
performance on an episode of Glee which
featured the break-up between Lea Michele’s
character ‘Rachel’ and Dean Geyer’s character
‘Brody’. After the break-up the two preformed
the song ‘Creep’. During the performance
there’s a bit with the two fading around a
bedroom and I decided to use this as
inspiration for my idea; See the video below
this PowerPoint.
3. Walking Away
One of my shots features my character
walking away from the alcohol and the
letter which I pan down to after we see her
walk away. This is to show her trying to
escape her problems, leaving them behind
as she walks outside. By panning down to
the two after she leaves it emphasizes the
importance of her leaving them behind
but also suggests that this isn’t going to be
a permanent escape from her pain and
alcoholism.
I decided to include this at the point of the
video I did because of the significance to
the lyrics it held. The lyrics ‘I’d run away,
to some fortune that I, I, should have
found, by now’ play just before this shot
introducing the idea of her leaving her
pain behind with her crumpling the letter
and tossing it away alongside the alcohol.
4. Close Ups
Throughout my video I use close ups as a way
to portray my characters emotions to the
audience allowing them to grow attached
with my character and sympathise with what
she’s going through. This is because by using
a close up the audience is able to see the pain
my character is going through close which
allows them to identify with her which in
turn allows them to see her pain. In one of
my close ups I have framed it so that a light is
shining on my characters face representing
the light that will come at the end of the
mourning period when she will have come to
terms with her fathers passing and be able to
begin rebuilding herself. However, in this the
most predominant feature in the frame is the
shadows over the other side of her face which
represents the darkness and pain that still
has a hold on her, showing she is struggling
to shake herself free of it.
5. Extreme Close-Ups
In these shots I feature rather quick
editing that moves from one extreme
close up to another. In these scenes the
emphasis is placed on the alcohol taking
over my characters life and this is
reflected by the alcohol taking over the
screen, becoming the main feature.
Through this we can determine that her
life is becoming absorbed around the
alcohol and that she is unable to escape
it.
I also did this so that the audience
would be able to identify with my
character and allow what she is doing to
herself to sink in with the audience. By
having the edit speed appear so fast, the
chain of drinking the alcohol appears to
work as if it’s a routine, again showing it
has taken over her life.
6. Language
As my song is about distractions and hiding
from pain I decided I wanted to create a music
video that would represent this and came up
with the idea of alcoholism to accomplish this. I
wanted to portray this through the language of
my video, creating shots that would get across
the message of the song as well as the message I
wanted to get across to my audience. To do this
I had to create shots that emphasize this
language which would in turn get across my
message. The main way I did this is through
close-ups which I have previously spoken about
before, using them to show my characters
emotions. However, this is not the only way I
did this with the theme of isolation being a focus
of my video. At multiple points in my video
there is shots where my character is alone with
wide backgrounds showing that she is alone and
isolated from others because of the pain she’s
feeling. At one point someone tries to talk to my
character and break her isolation but she rejects
them because of the pain she’s feeling.
7. Institution
When deciding on which record label my
artist would signed onto I decided to
research multiple labels and see which label
would be fitting for an artist of my genre. I
decided to go with Interscope Records as I
found they had multiple artists under the
same genre as mine meaning they were a
good fit for my artist. Examples of artists
featured on the label are; The 1975, Imagine
Dragons, OneRepublic, Years & Years etc…
I believe the experience this label has had
with artists of this genre it would know how
to work with my artist and would allow my
artist to be successful. Also, despite the
label is known to work with both chart
artists and artist who would be less well
known and would be more aimed towards a
target audience. My artist fits under the
latter category again meaning this label
would be a successful one for him to be
signed to.
8. Ideology
The main ideology of my music video is the
pain about the pain a loss can inflict on
people. People would watch my music video
and would feel sympathetic towards my
character because of the loss she has been
through. I have framed a few shots in order
to show my characters pain to the audience
in order to gain a reaction from them. An
example of this is final shot in my video
which features my character crying on the
floor as the camera pulls away from her.
This creates the effect of her being left to
mourn her father, leaving the audience
sympathetic to what she’s going through.
Another shot that helps create this
sympathy from my audience is close up
shots of her drinking which causes people
to feel for her because they know she’s
making a mistake and dealing with her pain
in the wrong way which allows them to
sympathise with her.
9. Audience
Despite the fact that my main audience for this
piece would be teens, I believe this music video
would appeal to people of varying ages due to
the song that I have chosen to create the video
for. Songs of this genre are liked by people of
various ages and for this reason it is likely that
people of various ages would watch my video.
However, as I have produced a piece that
features a teenager as my protagonist,
teenagers would be more likely be able to relate
with this video, specifically those who have
been through a loss. My video would also likely
be target towards both genres due to the genre
of music again breaching a wide group of
people. My video also allows my audience to be
varying in gender, however, featuring a female
protagonist may cause my video to appeal to
people of the female gender as they are more
likely to closely relate with the character. My
video would be targeted towards people of
varying social class, specifically those who are
able to watch music videos through a television
or computer.
10. Representation
In my video I have represented how loss
can effect someone's life and what it can
cause them to do. However, this could be
interpreted negatively because it features
teenage drinking which some people
would say shouldn’t be represented in the
media and may influence teenagers to
drink. This was not my intended
representation of drinking in this video as
I wanted to represent what death can
bring people to do and the drinking was
my pathway to this and as such I wanted
my teenage character to be drinking over
the loss of her father. I believe the way I
have represented youth along with
drinking is effective because it doesn’t
feature binge drinking for fun, instead
focusing on the pain the character feels
and what it causes her to do.
