1. Effective?
When creating my music video and ancillary texts I wanted there to be a clear
cohesion between the two that would be evident through the messages that they try
to get across. This can be seen as evident through the message of innocence and how
we deal with loss that can be seen through the pieces. The theme of innocence was
the main message I was trying to create through my products and as such my music
video deals with the innocence of people after they have been through a loss and
how loss prays on us after that loss. I believe I have effectively portrayed this through
the colour scheme that I have chosen for my entire digipak with the use of the brown
tint representing the depression we feel after a loss. I originally intended this to be black
and white but though this was too commonly used and wanted to do something more
unique and decided to change the tint. However, I believe this still works because it
creates the same effect that having the images in black and white would have.
Another thing I wanted to be constant throughout my digipak was simplicity which was
an important aspect of my digipak and I believe I have also translated this into my
music video. By having my video be set in everyday locations there is an air of
simplicity over the top of the theme of loss and how we deal with it. I also tried to
portray this through the edits I used, specifically using jump cuts as opposed to other
cuts that may have been to fancy for the messages I wanted to get across. By having
my main character be an alcoholic I could have portrayed that as the main theme of
the video and used effects that would have played on this. However, as I wanted to
have this simple theme throughout my products I decided it was best for me to play
my edits in this way,
2. Consistent?
One of my aims when creating these products was to keep a consistency
between my products in regards to how they looked. To do this I knew I needed
to decided on a colour scheme that would successfully portray the simplicity I
wanted it. I knew black and white would be the best way for me to do this and as
such I used these two colours throughout my piece, changing the dominance
between the two. One thing I knew I wanted to do is create a difference
between the inside and outside of my digipak and I decided the best way to do
this was to flip the way I used black and white between these two sections by
having white be the background colour on the inside and black be it on the
outside. I believe this is effective in creating a feeling of hope on the inside, the
part where we feel better after the loss. In contrast to this the outside portrays the
part where the loss is fresh and so is the pain. I used the colour yellow as I find it a
colour that represents innocence which is something I wanted to portray in my
digipak as I believe people are venerable and innocent after a loss meaning it
represents peoples state of mind after loss.
I have also tried to portray the aftermath of loss through my video, which portrays
the effects loss can have on you as well as subtly giving hints to the light at the
end of the tunnel which I have portrayed in a couple of shots by having light
shine on the face of my actress. This is a simple and subtle way to hint at this and I
believe it effectively works to portray this to the audience in a way that is
consistent with how it has been portrayed throughout my digipak.
3. Feedback
I posted all three of my products over social media as well as
creating a survey for my digipak and poster to get some
responses from my audience. Most of them agreed that there
was a clear consistency through the products however, there
was some people who pointed out that my digipak may look
better if I made it a consistent background colour throughout.
However, I decided to keep my digipak the same due to me
wanting to portray what I mentioned in the previous post. After I
explained this to the people who gave me this feedback, they
agreed with my reasoning leading me to believe this is a good
way to have my digipak set out.
Some of the responses I got...
“The colour scheme works well and there is a clear continuity
between the video and digipak...”
“The colour scheme and filter look good and consistent...”
