1. Music Video Concept – The 1975 ‘Girls’
What’s the song about?
I believe that the song is about a failing one sided relationship. The artist has presents to the
listeners the idea that it may be something he has experienced himself. This song shapes the
idea that the woman in the relationship may be immature or distracted from the relationship,
howevershe is the one who wants the relationship to work. The repeated line throughout the
song of “their just girls” is the guy reminding himself not to get caught up in the moment as they
are, just girls. The end of the song suggests that the guy has told her woman he doesn’t want her
anymore, as he ends the relationship. She tries to convincehim that she if good for him, but she
seems unsuccessful.
What is your video about? What is the story/message/question you are
trying to convey?
My videowill convey the message of a failing relationship and the problems that young couples
facethrough the use of performance and narrative concept combined. I plan to hint at this
covertly as I don’t want it to be obvious. I want to introduce the idea that the woman might be
getting more male attention from outside the relationship, but I wantthis to be subtle. I want to
convey her immaturity and his lack of commitment and belief. I want my audience to be able to
relate to the video as it will allow them to immerse themselves into the narrative.
Is it going to illustrate, amplify or completely challenge the song’s message?
I am planning to both illustrate and amplify the song’s lyrics to demonstrate the message I have
envisaged. I feel that by using these concepts it will allow the audience torelate to the message I
am portraying in the video. I decided not to challenge the songs message as I felt that the topic
was too sensitive and apparent in today’s society to insult the idea.
What is going to make this video iconic, creative and unique?
My videowill be creative by the way I plan on revealing the storyline. As I mentioned earlier I
do not want the storyline to be obvious. I intend on using generic conventions to make this
video iconic as it will both meet and challenge these conventions to make it unique. Although
this song already has an existing video, I do not plan to use this as a starting point as I feel it
sexualises women, and this is something that I do not want my videoto portray. I also do not
want my video to be likened to the original as I feel that it doesn’t portray the song in the way it
is receivedby the audience, therefore I plan to use my owninterpretations.
