Game Title
Gears of War 3
Provide detailed descriptions from chosen examples that establish…
Setting
Clearly state what production technique(s) you think have
been used to create specific soundtrack elements
The soundtrack for the cutscene helps establish the feeling of a world that is
basically a warzone combined with sort of zombie apocalypse.
The sound track at the start of the cutscene
sounds like it could have been composed digitally
or an orchestra recording.
Including the ambient sound of bullets being fired and the loud crashing sound of
debris falling as the lambent stalks sprout out of the ground.
The music changes dramatically around half way through the scene as it leads up to
Dom’s suicide to save his friends.
The sounds of the explosions, guns, etc. could
have been recorded from the real thing or other
sounds that were altered (made louder for
example).
The part of the scene leading to Dom’s death
sounds more like a traditional piano that was
simply recorded with a microphone.
Mood
The first music soundtrack in the cutscene is, in a way, angry and dramatic at the
same time.
The sad soundtrack may have dampened the
background sound to give the feeling of the
background going quiet.
This quickly changes to the dramatic, saddening soundtrack, helping the player
relate with Marcus, attempting to make the player feel like they’ve lost their best
friend with the depressing, yet calming, music.
During this soundtrack; all other sounds are made much quieter, this adds to the
dramatic feeling the designers wanted to give the player.
Game genre
The music goes really well with the game’s dark theme on an action shooter. It’s
slow on some parts and fast on others, going from quiet to loud and vice versa.
Combining sounds that could be associated with horror or action to make the
soundtrack.
This was probably achieved by making it digitally
on a computer.

Narrative
The dialog in this scene is really good, the voice actors do a good job of making their
characters seem as real as possible. For example, the argument between Marcus
and Dom while Dom is driving the truck through the tunnel.
Their voices may have been altered slightly during
production to improve the voices.
