The document describes several experiments conducted to learn new skills for a documentary project. 2. Experiment 1 using the Tascam to practice audio
I had never used a audio device other than one built into my camera or my phone so for my
first experiment I knew I needed to figure out how to use it and sync it up to some footage so I
took out my camera setup and used the Tascam to record over a motorway bridge near my
home, the clips are nothing special it was more jus to figure out how my kit worked with the
audio device this was a good help as it would prepare me for setting up my gear out in the field
to get ready to film things.

3. Experiment 2 using audio device to gather sounds from my record player and mix the music
For this experiment my thoughts were that I needed to have some music for my project and I had
ideas of the kind of sound I wanted but I dint want to just take a track I like and drop it straight
into premier and have it over my documentary as I thought that would be effortless and cheating
almost so I decided to do some looking into music mixing software's that were free and found
mixx which I made for radio DJs and music sampling so I decide to use the Tascam to record
some samples from my own record collection from albums like the trainspotting 2 sounds track
and Radiohead live albums which were all music I though would fit nicely with my project. In the
screenshot below you can see me changing up a track by Aphex twin where I'm slowing the track
down changing the pitch and adding some echo to it which really changes the ambiance of the
track and fits it nicely with my project.
This experiment was really helpful as it allowed me to
personalise the sound of my documentary and taught
me some new skills that id never done before with the
use of this software which I would definitely use again.
I've screen recorded me mixing this track which will
be in my production diary so the whole process can be
watched.

4. Experiment 2 using my Epson scanner to morph text
This was one of those experiments where I
had no idea if it would work but I was really
interested in trying it as I've seen people on
Instagram using it to make gig posters and
merch. Its basically where you take some
text on paper in whatever font you'd like (I
hand drew mine) and place it on your scanner
and when the scanner is going across the
paper you wiggle and drag it to stretch out
the lines of the text to make some weird
wobbly patterns. This worked out nicely for
me and I got some strange styles on my text I
think it would take me a lot more attempts to
get it looking exactly how I want it too but for
a couple of tries I really like the strange look
that this technique gives and I think I could
definitely figure out a way to incorporate this
into my project.

5. These are the results of a few attempts at the
scanning technique these took me a few tries to
get right but I do think they're quite effective and
very experimental there's definitely more I can do
with this and I'm exited to try fit this in to my
project somehow

6. More text experiments:
Following on from my scanning
text attempts I tried to replicate
something similar in photoshop
by putting pins into the text and
dragging and pulling downwards
and upwards s it has a similar
effect to what the scan gives, this
Is much easier to do and you can
see what kind of effect its having
on the text while your doing it
instead of waiting for a full scan
to finish and having to try over
an dover. This is probably going
to be a really useful technique
and I plan on using some of these
fonts I've made for my actual
work as I really like how some of
them look

7. I chose these experiments to do as id never really tried anything like them before and I
knew I wanted to challenge myself to learn something that I hadn’t used before which is
why there quite a mixed bag of things to learn but they're all going to be massively useful
to making my project.
I think all these experiments will prove helpful for making my project especially the mixing
and the Tascam ones as sound is going to be a really important thing for this documentary
especially when it comes to filming my interviews which is one of the main parts of my
project and I'm really hoping to make it look as professional as possible.
I know visually what I wanted to make my documentary look like but its something I've had
a lot of practice with which is why I dint decide to do any experiments on visual style in
terms of camera angles or colour grading as I already know how I'm going to do that.
