1. Script/question ideas
The idea of these set of slides is to be a guide for me to use when I interview my subjects and will
hopefully keep me on track with what I need from my interviews as I've talked a lot about my previous
projects and how I haven’t been as prepared as I should have in terms of getting everything I need when
filming and having to go back out and film when I should really be focusing on finishing the edits of my
work.
So I'm going to write down a set of important questions that I would like to ask then a list of side
conversations to bring up that can hopefully bring up some good content to talk about things about the
work they do and how the tattoos have affected their life.
I will also be including a brief list of things I need to do while I'm at my filming locations I'm not going to
do a full shot list as that will be more for my planning documents but I'm going to include some ideas of
what I need to get while I'm out doing my interviews and also give myself a rough estimate of how much
footage I need so ill probably need at least a few minuets of footage from each interview that is usable
so ill probably have to get around 20-30 mins of conversation that I can cut up and get the best bits
from.
2. Questions for interview
First off is the basic list really general questions then ill be doing the more in depth questions
• What's your name and how old are you?
• How long have you been tattooing and how did you start off getting into the industry?
• What inspirations did you gain your style from?
• what do you think about peoples negative opinions on tattoos e.g. thinking people with them shouldn't have them visible
and not able to have certain jobs etc?.
• do you think people are becoming more open to tattoos and starting to care less about people having them on public
display?.
• Is there anything you wish people would know about tattooing as an artform or anything you want to say to maybe help
people understand that it is a form of expression and to be looked at the same as a painting in a gallery?.
• is there anything you'd want to say to people who don’t like tattooing or aren’t a fan?
• what do you think about the influx of tattoo artists that are popping up at the moment as it seems there's so many
people trying to get into the industry at the moment with lots of different styles emerging?.
• What's it like being a tattoo artist?
• Is there any downsides to being a tattoo artist? Anything that you would want to change about the lifestyle?
3. Questions analysis
These questions are made for both sets of interviews I may ask some of the same questions to both people
just because it will be good to get different answers from the same question and someone might answer it
much better than the other which would be good, I've also made some questions made much more tailored to
each individual like there's a few questions for Alfie the tattoo artist and the questions are mainly related to
working as a tattoo artist which obviously wont apply to the other interviewees who aren’t tattoo artists they
just have a nice collection that id like to talk to them about.
Most of these questions are made to be conversation starters as I don’t want my interviews to feel really
blocky where I just ask a question and they answer it over and over again I want it to be like their just
talking about their experiences while I show off some of their work/collection including b roll off tattoos
being done and the process of tattooing. This will hopefully all mix well with the footage I get and I can
hopefully get some good interactions and conversations with the people I've chosen to interview otherwise I
may struggle to get the rest of my footage to carry the documentary, it really does rely heavily on my
interviews to make it work.
I also would like to ask my interviewees if There's anything they would like to say apart from my questions
as there may be some things they want to talk about that I haven’t mentioned which would be really cool as
then what they say is completely original from them and I can see what they have to say as people who are
in the industry with tattoos.
4. Time frame/ interview length/ planning reasons
I'm looking to film at least 20 minuets of video footage for each interview hopefully ill get more
than that but I think 20 minuets is the best I will be able to get as I'm not a well practiced
interviewer so I'm going to try get the best answers that I can and try get some good
conversations out of the interviews and hopefully ill have enough for making the final piece as I
don’t want to have to go back and re interview them if I don’t get enough answers.
I think I've mapped out enough questions for my interviews that I should be able to get a good set
of footage even if the answers aren’t really long I should still end up with a lot to sift through and
cut up to make work with the rest of my footage, I purposely planned out all these questions as in
past projects I've struggled with getting enough footage or not getting what I needed and
forgetting about things so having a plan like this with a script is going to be really helpful for me
and can hopefully make my interviews and filming go much smoother than other projects.
