2. Postmodernism
Postmodernism both describes the movement in the late 20th century
as well as the artistic concepts. This is difficult to define since a theory
in postmodernism is that there should be no definite meaning,
boundaries and no absolute truths. Generally, postmodernism is
reinventing styles from the past, as well as mixing different artistic
styles and media. Postmodernists like to challenge the norm and break
boundaries (examples include science, religion, technology,
government) to express their own opinion.
3. Simulacra
An imitation or a representation of a person or something (a copy of a
copy of a copy...).
Human Puppet Robot
4. Intertextuality
When one media text reference another.
The Simpsons and Batman Iggy Azalea 'Fancy' music video and the film Clueless
5. Pastiche
Similar to intertextuality, work that imitates another, however, it is
exaggerated and changed from the original (parody).
The Mona Lisa in the style of Lego The Scary Movie film franchise which parodies other horror films
6. Relfection
Deconstructing postmodernism and analysing it, I have a better
understanding of the concepts and realised that it is still relevant today.
The song that we are using, Lyin' to Myself by Todrick Hall strongly
applies to postmodernism. The visual album 'Straight Outta Oz' (2016)
that the song is from, is a reference to the song Straight Outta Compton
by N.W.A (2009) as well as the film Straight Outta Compton film (2015).
The album also refers to the film The Wizard of Oz (1939). The album as
strong elements of this film but has been adapted to be more
contemporary and fit with the pop music genre. Even the title of the
song 'Lyin' to Myself' refers to the cowardly lion from the film. The
visual album also address issues within society such as racism, police
brutality and the truth behind Hollywood.
7. Reflection
I will also apply postmodernism to my own music video. The social
issue that I will address is class and status. In the narrative the
controlling girlfriend is a business woman who believes that her
partner (the painter) should not have a career in the arts and should
join her. Generally, it is believed that the creative arts are not relevant
in society and I would like to break this stereotype in my music video,
by having the painter being able to over power his girlfriend.
