Guy Ritchie
Guy Stuart Ritchie (born 10 September
1968) is an English screenwriter, film
director and producer, best known for
directing Lock, Stock and Two Smoking
Barrels (1998), Snatch (2000), Swept
Away (2002), Revolver (2005), RocknRolla
(2008), Sherlock Holmes (2009) and
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
(2011). (Source from Wikipedia).
All of Guy Ritchie films are different genre
and the genre of his film can be
recognised by the opening of a film this is
because the colours, fonts, pictures and
music he uses in his films match the
genre. Even though the films are totally
different genre you would realise they’re
produce from the director due to all his
movies having similar openings.
All the Mise en scene in the opening is suppose to
reflect the time period of the Victorian error so all
the low key lighting, costumes represents the whole
mystery of the film. All the titles that appear on the
screen are about 3 seconds long, the opening uses
a lot of graphic match its like its telling us a story in
the beginning. The music is really upbeat this maybe
represents the genre which is detective fiction and
suggest to the audience that there is going to be
some action involved.
The font used in the opening is serif, this font makes
the movie associate with the past Sherlock Holmes is
set in the 1800’s so with him using that font he try set
that Victorian look.
Due to the music and the Mise en scene we straight
away know the genre off the film.
Lock, stock ad two smoking barrels starts off with a
black screen showing the institution. It begins with
a handheld camera shot, coming close to the
protagonist, we get a close up of the protagonists
face which helps the audience realise who the
main character in this film is. The protagonist is
represented as a cocky and confident guy we
know this as a lot of people are gathering around
him. The use o the handheld camera is effective
as it makes the audience feel like they’re part of
the crowd as well. When we have the black
screens with the institutions we hear the
protagonist still speaking this a non-dietetic sound
used. The fact that they are running away from
police suggest to the audience that they are
trouble makers. We then have a slow motion shot
of a narrator giving the audience more
information about the characters.
The title of the film is the first title that comes up.
The opening scene is similar to the other movies
Guy Richie created. The characters are shown
as if they are from a book. The music used in
RocknRolla is also upbeat and suits the genre of
the movie.
After the credits end we have a mid shot of a
man dressed in a suit due to his clothing we
immediately now that this guy is a working men
with money. He stares directly at the camera
breaking the third wall, the camera slowly
zooms in. The opening of RocknRolla have a
very similar opening style to Sherlock Holmes.
