2. Induction
Motor
• Invented by Nikola Tesla
in 1882
• Comprises of 90%
Industrial motors
• Electric motors account
for ~45% of total global
electricity consumption
• It is basically an AC
electrical motor
• converts electrical energy
to mechanical energy
3. Parts of an Induction Motor
STATOR AND
ROTOR
ENCLOSURE BEARINGS FAN
4. Stator
• Stationary portion of the motor
• Found in electric generators, electric
motors, sirens, mud motors or biological
rotors
• Delivers a rotating magnetic field to interact
with the rotor
• Carries out this function with the help of
copper windings through which alternating
current is passed
5.
6. WINDINGS
• Winding is a twisting movement. It is an
arrangement of bunch of coils. The process by which
a number of coils are wound on a conductor is called
winding of coils.
• The windings used in electrical machines can be
classified as:
1.Concentrated winding
2.Distributed winding
3.Closed winding
4.Open winding
7. Rotor
• It is the rotating electrical component of the
motor
• It has no physical contact with the stator for
producing current
• Consists of many thin bars for the induction of
electricity through them
• It’s core is made by many thin insulated
metallic sheets instead of one so as to
minimize eddy current losses
8.
9. Working Principle
• The alternating current produces a rotating
magnetic field of uniform strength as shown
• As the direction of the field is changing with
time, according to Faraday’s law there is a
current produced in the loop
• Thus, a current carrying loop is situated in a
magnetic field
• So now according to Lorentz Force Law, an
electromagnetic force is produced in the
loop
• Therefore the loop will start to rotate
10. SUBMERSIBLE MOTOR
A SUBMERSIBLE MOTOR acts through the
interaction between motor's magnetic field and
winding current to generate force in form of
rotation. It has functional activity has same as
INDUCTION MOTOR but its domain is specified
to be completely under water
11. Applications
Used for both industrial and domestic purposes
Common areas of use are blowers, centrifugal pumps, compressors,
conveyors, crushers, punch presses, bulldozers, etc.
