Shaded-pole motors are the original type of single-phase AC induction motor. They have a copper ring surrounding part of each pole that creates an out of phase magnetic field, causing rotation. Shaded-pole motors have low starting torque, low efficiency, and are used for small, low-power applications like fans and blowers where high torque isn't needed. Common applications include small fans and blowers in devices like air conditioners, exhaust fans, hair dryers, and small appliances.

single-phase motors, mostly due to the low torque and
efficiency
• output capability of a shaded pole motor will range from
"sub-fractional HP" i.e. 1/30 HP to a maximum of 1/4 or
1/3 HP
