2. Initial Reaction
• After looking at the brief I have a few ideas for my project. My main idea is to create an
album for a fictional band/artists, as I can create other different productions to work with
the album for example: a CD cover and insert, a poster to advertise a gig/tour,
merchandise such as T-shirts and hoodies and more possible productions. This is a good
initial idea because I have some experience in using Photoshop and enjoy using this
software (as I have used Photoshop in my Print Production, Video Game Production and
Advertising Production) and all of these production ideas I have for my main idea involve
using Photoshop. If this idea doesn’t work out I have backup ideas, such as creating a
video game set (case, insert, point of sale, poster). My final potential idea is to create a
magazine using Photoshop again, along with a context page, front cover, double page
spread and website, however I am likely not to do this as I I have already done this for my
print production. I know for definite I will be making a print based production as this is
the element of this course I am most experienced in and the element I enjoy the most,
therefore I will have the best chance to get a high grade
• I believe that I have a good amount of time to produce my work (9 weeks) as for my
other productions I had 5 weeks to finish. As I have 4 more weeks then for my previous
productions I will have more time to add detail to my work to reach a higher grade at the
end.
• I am mostly pleased with the requirements as I think they are do-able in the time we
have to complete them. The productions I will be making will most likely need similar
skills I used for my print production rotation, as in this rotation I made a magazine cover
and a double page spread, therefore I will be using the same software (Photoshop) to
create my album cover etc. One of my initial ideas for my FMP work is a magazine cover
to advertise my album cover (my main production), so I will be trying to make something
similar to my magazine cover I made in my previous print rotation, however I will be
using my own photography, therefore I will need toresearch professional magazine covers
to see what I need to follow and make something similar too.
• An image of my magazine cover I made in my print rotation is to the right, along with a
professional magazine cover I have in mind of creating something similar too, as it is from
the same music genre i have in mind.
13. Mood Board - General Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated colours/images
styles/fonts/tone/mood
• Apart from the colour screenshots from ‘Paletton’, a main notice in the overall appearance of the
mood board is the darkness of a lot of the images, with artists’ photography in black and white and
the setting of the street alley in one of the pictures being at night. This is what I was trying to
achieve as I want to portray a darker mood rather than a really happy mood with bright colours, as
one of the main moods/feelings behind many songs from the grime genre have this feel to them,
therefore the best way to reach out to the audience of grime fans is to relate to them. I gathered
different images of grime artists and I will use my own photography to get images similar to these,
either in the action of making a song or with the artist taking up most of the image, no facial
expression and dark colours (likely black and white). The album covers on my mood board are
heavily photo shopped, with a certain design on them, which is the idea I am going to use for my
fictional album cover, however I don’t know exactly what design I will be using yet.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• This mood board will help me with my product, as I will be following the overall colour scheme,
especially the colour screenshots from ‘Paletton’ that are on the mood board. The album cover
designs are unrealistic or un life-like, which is the idea I will be using for my album cover, so these
images will help me with my ideas for my album cover design. The fonts used from ‘Dafont’ are
abstract and not usual, which I will be following for my whole design.
15. Mood Board – Album Cover Analysis
Just from looking at the mood board as a whole you can see many purples/pinks which I
have chosen specifically to show the type of colour scheme I am thinking of making. The
other noticeable colours shown in the images I have chosen are black and white, which is
the second option I have for my colour scheme. These darker colours I am thinking of using
in my album cover symbolize the mood/feel of the album, and how the artist looks with
their expression also shows the mood of the album, and all of these are fairly similar. They
have straight faces, with not much expression, which is how I want to portray my album.
The fonts I have chosen are unique and interesting as I want to choose something
memorable that will be iconic and known for my album and not seen anywhere else.
The images on the cover of these albums are mostly of the artist which is how I want to
create my album, and they are straight on with a more upset expression/mood being
shown, which again is how I want to present the artist on my album.
These images will influence how I am going to create my album as I think I will have a dark
album cover with parts/hints of purples/pinks, which is different to each individual album
cover shown in the mood board, however my idea is a mixture of all of these album covers
put together. Apart from one album cover, they are all realistic and life-like, without very
heavy Photoshop effects making it look unrealistic and non-life-like.
17. Mood Board – Track List Analysis
This track list mood board isn’t perfect in showing my visual ideas through existing images
and products, because not many professional track lists follow the idea I have and am most
likely going to create. The majority of these track lists are very similar with small, simple
text going straight down the middle, and none of them stand out (which isn’t necessarily a
bad idea for a back cover of an album), however my idea is to use a large interesting font or
effect on the text to make it unique and stand out a lot more then the typical track list.
Although this won’t make my track list look professional it will make it different and unique
compared to other track lists.
The general colour of these track lists are purple, black or red, and I like the look of all of
these colours used, however it depends what colour I will choose for my album cover, as I
will choose a colour that matches it.
The main font at the bottom I chose from ‘Dafont’ and at the moment that is the font I will
be choosing for my songs, as it is unique and interesting, and has a good appearance when
looking at it as a whole.
At the moment I am focused on my idea for my track list being abstract, interesting and
different to the usual track list, therefore I don’t think this mood board will influence the
style/type of track list I will be making, however the colours and images will be used as
influence when making my product, as they follow the ideas I have already, partly why I
chose the images.
19. Mood Board – Tour Poster Analysis
A lot of these tour posters are very similar in colour and style. For
example most of them are using dark colours for the background and
images and using a contrasting brighter colour for the text, to show
clear, as it the information the viewer is looking for. A lot of them
follow a certain colour scheme, for example yellow and black or red
and black, which I think I will do for my tour poster but follow the
same colour scheme I have for my album cover and track list (purple/
pink and black/white).
The images used on these tour poster are also fairly similar, either an
image of the artist playing live music or an Photoshop effect on the
image of the artist, for example the ripped paper effect.
The aspects of this mood board that I will most likely use in my final
product are the colour schemes (dark, black and white with hints of
another colour). Also the layout on most of these tour posters, with
the image on the top (with a certain effect on it) and the information
in small text at the bottom.
21. Mood Board – Merchandise Analysis
Almost all of these merchandise products are black with a fairly small
logo on the front and in some case a larger image on the back, for
example the jumpers have a small print text on the front and a much
larger image or text on the back and sometimes more text on the
sleeves.
On all of the clothing the front has just a small print or text, meaning
the design is very simple, which is why I chose this images because my
idea from the start was to keep the design simple, as this is what most
people within my target audience (teenagers) would want. On the
back there is a larger image or print, which again is what my idea has
been from the start, to have the album name on the front and the
whole cover on the back.
An aspect I will take from this mood board is the simple design and the
dark colours as this these are aspects most teenagers look for in
merchandise (especially clothing) as they don’t want to stand out with
bright colours and big designs.
23. Mood Board – Magazine Cover Analysis
In this mood board I have a large variety of types of magazines, for example
fashion, music and life. However I like aspects from all of these magazine
covers, which is why I chose them. Most of them don’t have bright colours,
however still stand out, for example the colour scheme black, white and red is
quite common in these images, which gives the covers a good appearance.
All of these covers have a large image of someone covering most of the
magazine, and they vary from being in front of the information and title and
being behind them.
Most of these cover use colours to make certain features stand out, for
example some headlines are bright red compared to other smaller text being
in black and white.
Aspects that I will take from this mood board would be using an image of the
artist covering most of the magazine cover, making them the min focus point.
Also following a certain colour scheme (most likely red, black, white) and
using certain colours (red) to make certain features stand out more than
others.
