Factual:
Idea Development and Planning
Task 2: Idea Development and Planning U9 2.1
You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or visually interesting.
Analyse what you have gathered.
Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of your chosen
style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience.
Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan how you intend to
realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
Planning will vary depending on if you are doing a web series, podcast or a fanzine.
Web-series: A script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
Fanzine: Content outline, visual style, pagination, organisational documents.
Podcast: Script, organisational docs, clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
DIY magazine is the fanzine that are the main inspiration for my own project. These covers all have effects edited
on or around the cover star and have a more creative artistic approach to the cover in comparison to more
professional looking magazines. Each cover has a different effect, the top cover shows the cover star surrounded
by a paint splatter background, there isn’t many cover lines except for in the centre of the image where it says,
‘rebel with a cause’. This being in the centre in front of the cover artist implies that the quote is referring to them. I
would get inspiration from this by adding a quote from my interview in front of the cover artist with text effects.
The second and third cover are in different styles, but they both have their cover with multiple images of the cover
artist. The second image has a torn page effect almost as if the image has been torn out to reveal an alternate
image or stuck onto the page. I got inspiration from this when creating a double page spread example and I plan to
use this torn page effect throughout my magazine. The bottom page has multiple images of the artist also but it is
displayed with the images in a polaroid style. I got inspiration from this and used a similar college effect during the
production experiment phase. I quite like creating this image style and would be inspired to have this kind of effect
for my front cover image. The cover star of my front cover will be of the person I am interviewing, these magazines
often follow the same pattern as many magazines often have an interview with the cover star within the
magazine. Each cover follows a different colour scheme depending on the artist, I’m mostly inspired by the pink,
white and black colour scheme of the bottom cover as it has brighter colours that stand out, the flame effect on
one of the polaroid images also adds different colours to it. As I am planning to interview an independent artist, I
will plan my colour scheme to fit around either the artist’s style or the cover art of their releases. The masthead is
in a bold font and remains consistent throughout the magazines, my magazine will be titled ‘EXPOSE’ and I plan to
have a bold, block font similar to this and will have it in either black and white to contrast with the rest of the
cover. There won’t be many cover lines on my project which is also similar to these covers.
Front Cover Inspiration:
Interview Double Page Inspiration:
These pages from DIY Magazine are ideas for the layout of my interview page. Each of these
images have their interview layout in an interesting and unique way. The first image is consistent
with the theme of the cover page (shown on previous slide) with the polaroid style images on
one side. For the interview pages, all of these have the main image design on one page and the
interview on the other. The second image stands out the most, there are bright contrasting
colours used (blue and pink) that catches the audiences eye immediately. Their image is also
spread across both pages with the interview text placed on top. I may follow a similar theme for
my interview page as I feel it flows nicely and blends the pages together well. The third image
has the text ‘flip/reverse’ placed around the outside of the pages and across the entirety of one
page, they used bold text that stands out to make the interview pages look more interesting.
There is then an image of the artists placed on the left page with a blue filter and mirror effect,
along with various quotes from the interview placed throughout, these can give quite a trippy
effect which catches the audience’s eye and makes them want to read the interview. The text of
the interview is on the right page, it is placed so there is a blank square in the middle that shows
the main quote from the interview.
Page Layout Inspiration:
These pages are inspiration for my magazine layout and photo editing. I want my magazine to stand
out with bold colours and unique photo editing to make it look like the music fanzines I am inspired
by. The page with the text background ‘the well of souls’ is similar to a page I was inspired by for an
interview. I could use this in my magazine when introducing a different topic or article. Some of the
pages shown have images displayed in a collage style. The double page spread introducing Phoebe
Bridgers shows this along with a glitchy tv screen effect over the images. I could use this effect and
layout when writing about the streaming services topic I have planned. The second image uses
different shapes, fonts and images to create a unique layout to the article. There is also images
placed in part of the text that co-ordinate or match other images throughout the page. There is also
an overlay to make the page look like a paper effect. I may follow a similar layout when writing an
article that requires less images to ensure that the article still looks visually appealing and matches
the other pages and photo editing.
Content:
For my factual project I have decided to create a fanzine. The main topic my fanzine will be based around the music industry
and the downsides of it. My fanzine is going to be titled ‘EXPOSE’ and will have a bold block font so it stands out amongst the
rest of the cover. The cover image is going to be of the person I am interviewing and will be edited in a creative way to make
the image my own as I will most likely be unable to take my own photos of the people featuring throughout the fanzine. There
will be minimal cover lines to ensure that the focus is on the cover star. My fanzine is going to be a music magazine, the target
audience will be ages 18-25, or music fans. My fanzine will fit to the conventions of a music magazine and appeal to the target
audience by including an interview, there will be articles discussing topics in the music industry and there will be edited images
of various artists. It will be visually appealing with colours that are bold and bright but also cohesive. I will demonstrate a
variety of skills in Photoshop by editing the images and the layout in a creative way similar to other fanzines such as ‘DIY
Magazine’.
Content Outline/Pagination:
Page 1-2: Overview and Contents:
For the first page, it will be similar to an author’s notes where I will give a brief overview talking about the music industry as a whole and some of the topics throughout the zine. There
will be images included that correlate with the topics such as streaming service logos, records and shapes similar to the page on the previous slide that were used to add more detail to
the page, which will then be edited to stand out and have a colourful theme. The second page will be a contents page and label the page numbers that each article will be on, there will
be bold font used to make sure it stands out.
Page 3-4: Record Labels:
Page 3 is going to be talking about record labels and how artists can sometimes be negatively affected and tied to these labels or even held back creatively. I will include evidence by
quoting artists that have spoken about their issues with their record labels and have images of them included. Page 4 will be an article comparing record labels vs staying independent
as an artists and comparing the pros and cons to each. This will help introduce my next pages for my interview as I will be going from comparing record labels vs independent to an
interview with an independent artist.
Page 5-6: Interview:
Pages 5-6 are going to be a double page spread including an interview. I am planning on interviewing an independent artist to talk about their experiences in industry so far and their
struggles and benefits to being an independent artist. It will be written in a Q&A format instead of more descriptive as the interview is likely to be carried out over messages or email so
it would make the most sense to write it in this way. Page 5 will have an image of the artist most likely taking up most of the page and text will include either an overview of the artist
and their genre or a quote from the interview. Page 6 will be where the interview is written and will be displayed in a similar format to the images on my ‘interview layout inspiration’
slide.
Page 7-8: Women in the Music Industry:
This will be a double page spread talking about women in the music industry and their experience. There will be quotes and images of different artists talking about their experiences,
similar to page 3-4. I will also be writing about topics such as how women often have to work harder or reinvent themselves in order to stay relevant.
Page 9-10: How Streaming Services Affect the music industry:
For these pages I will be discussing if streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, etc. help or negatively impact artists, and how they affect more popular artists vs new artists. This
page will have a similar layout to the Phoebe Bridgers double page layout that is shown on the previous slide with the glitchy tv effect on the pages as I feel like this effect and layout
would fit this topic best.
Page 11-12: Social Media’s Impact on the Music Industry:
Pages 11-12 are going to talk about how social media impacts the music industry and the trends in music. I will talk about how it can benefit the music industry with it being a good way
to promote new music, as well as the disadvantages. TikTok’s influence is an example of how fast trends in music come and go and how music may be changing to fit to these trends.

Factual Development and Planning Pro Forma

  • 2. Task 2: Idea Development and Planning U9 2.1 You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or visually interesting. Analyse what you have gathered. Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of your chosen style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience. Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan how you intend to realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
  • 3. DIY magazine is the fanzine that are the main inspiration for my own project. These covers all have effects edited on or around the cover star and have a more creative artistic approach to the cover in comparison to more professional looking magazines. Each cover has a different effect, the top cover shows the cover star surrounded by a paint splatter background, there isn’t many cover lines except for in the centre of the image where it says, ‘rebel with a cause’. This being in the centre in front of the cover artist implies that the quote is referring to them. I would get inspiration from this by adding a quote from my interview in front of the cover artist with text effects. The second and third cover are in different styles, but they both have their cover with multiple images of the cover artist. The second image has a torn page effect almost as if the image has been torn out to reveal an alternate image or stuck onto the page. I got inspiration from this when creating a double page spread example and I plan to use this torn page effect throughout my magazine. The bottom page has multiple images of the artist also but it is displayed with the images in a polaroid style. I got inspiration from this and used a similar college effect during the production experiment phase. I quite like creating this image style and would be inspired to have this kind of effect for my front cover image. The cover star of my front cover will be of the person I am interviewing, these magazines often follow the same pattern as many magazines often have an interview with the cover star within the magazine. Each cover follows a different colour scheme depending on the artist, I’m mostly inspired by the pink, white and black colour scheme of the bottom cover as it has brighter colours that stand out, the flame effect on one of the polaroid images also adds different colours to it. As I am planning to interview an independent artist, I will plan my colour scheme to fit around either the artist’s style or the cover art of their releases. The masthead is in a bold font and remains consistent throughout the magazines, my magazine will be titled ‘EXPOSE’ and I plan to have a bold, block font similar to this and will have it in either black and white to contrast with the rest of the cover. There won’t be many cover lines on my project which is also similar to these covers. Front Cover Inspiration:
  • 4. Interview Double Page Inspiration: These pages from DIY Magazine are ideas for the layout of my interview page. Each of these images have their interview layout in an interesting and unique way. The first image is consistent with the theme of the cover page (shown on previous slide) with the polaroid style images on one side. For the interview pages, all of these have the main image design on one page and the interview on the other. The second image stands out the most, there are bright contrasting colours used (blue and pink) that catches the audiences eye immediately. Their image is also spread across both pages with the interview text placed on top. I may follow a similar theme for my interview page as I feel it flows nicely and blends the pages together well. The third image has the text ‘flip/reverse’ placed around the outside of the pages and across the entirety of one page, they used bold text that stands out to make the interview pages look more interesting. There is then an image of the artists placed on the left page with a blue filter and mirror effect, along with various quotes from the interview placed throughout, these can give quite a trippy effect which catches the audience’s eye and makes them want to read the interview. The text of the interview is on the right page, it is placed so there is a blank square in the middle that shows the main quote from the interview.
  • 5. Page Layout Inspiration: These pages are inspiration for my magazine layout and photo editing. I want my magazine to stand out with bold colours and unique photo editing to make it look like the music fanzines I am inspired by. The page with the text background ‘the well of souls’ is similar to a page I was inspired by for an interview. I could use this in my magazine when introducing a different topic or article. Some of the pages shown have images displayed in a collage style. The double page spread introducing Phoebe Bridgers shows this along with a glitchy tv screen effect over the images. I could use this effect and layout when writing about the streaming services topic I have planned. The second image uses different shapes, fonts and images to create a unique layout to the article. There is also images placed in part of the text that co-ordinate or match other images throughout the page. There is also an overlay to make the page look like a paper effect. I may follow a similar layout when writing an article that requires less images to ensure that the article still looks visually appealing and matches the other pages and photo editing.
  • 6. Content: For my factual project I have decided to create a fanzine. The main topic my fanzine will be based around the music industry and the downsides of it. My fanzine is going to be titled ‘EXPOSE’ and will have a bold block font so it stands out amongst the rest of the cover. The cover image is going to be of the person I am interviewing and will be edited in a creative way to make the image my own as I will most likely be unable to take my own photos of the people featuring throughout the fanzine. There will be minimal cover lines to ensure that the focus is on the cover star. My fanzine is going to be a music magazine, the target audience will be ages 18-25, or music fans. My fanzine will fit to the conventions of a music magazine and appeal to the target audience by including an interview, there will be articles discussing topics in the music industry and there will be edited images of various artists. It will be visually appealing with colours that are bold and bright but also cohesive. I will demonstrate a variety of skills in Photoshop by editing the images and the layout in a creative way similar to other fanzines such as ‘DIY Magazine’.
  • 7. Content Outline/Pagination: Page 1-2: Overview and Contents: For the first page, it will be similar to an author’s notes where I will give a brief overview talking about the music industry as a whole and some of the topics throughout the zine. There will be images included that correlate with the topics such as streaming service logos, records and shapes similar to the page on the previous slide that were used to add more detail to the page, which will then be edited to stand out and have a colourful theme. The second page will be a contents page and label the page numbers that each article will be on, there will be bold font used to make sure it stands out. Page 3-4: Record Labels: Page 3 is going to be talking about record labels and how artists can sometimes be negatively affected and tied to these labels or even held back creatively. I will include evidence by quoting artists that have spoken about their issues with their record labels and have images of them included. Page 4 will be an article comparing record labels vs staying independent as an artists and comparing the pros and cons to each. This will help introduce my next pages for my interview as I will be going from comparing record labels vs independent to an interview with an independent artist. Page 5-6: Interview: Pages 5-6 are going to be a double page spread including an interview. I am planning on interviewing an independent artist to talk about their experiences in industry so far and their struggles and benefits to being an independent artist. It will be written in a Q&A format instead of more descriptive as the interview is likely to be carried out over messages or email so it would make the most sense to write it in this way. Page 5 will have an image of the artist most likely taking up most of the page and text will include either an overview of the artist and their genre or a quote from the interview. Page 6 will be where the interview is written and will be displayed in a similar format to the images on my ‘interview layout inspiration’ slide. Page 7-8: Women in the Music Industry: This will be a double page spread talking about women in the music industry and their experience. There will be quotes and images of different artists talking about their experiences, similar to page 3-4. I will also be writing about topics such as how women often have to work harder or reinvent themselves in order to stay relevant. Page 9-10: How Streaming Services Affect the music industry: For these pages I will be discussing if streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, etc. help or negatively impact artists, and how they affect more popular artists vs new artists. This page will have a similar layout to the Phoebe Bridgers double page layout that is shown on the previous slide with the glitchy tv effect on the pages as I feel like this effect and layout would fit this topic best. Page 11-12: Social Media’s Impact on the Music Industry: Pages 11-12 are going to talk about how social media impacts the music industry and the trends in music. I will talk about how it can benefit the music industry with it being a good way to promote new music, as well as the disadvantages. TikTok’s influence is an example of how fast trends in music come and go and how music may be changing to fit to these trends.
  • 8. Production Schedule: Date Tasks Date Tasks Weds 13th Oct The majority of the first week will be focused on writing articles to put it in the fanzine. This is what I will be doing for this day. Weds 3rd Nov I will create my double page spread on women in the music industry. I plan to create the pages of my fanzine in order of my content outline as it will be easier to follow my planning. Thurs 14th Oct I will be continuing writing the articles. Throughout this week I will also be writing out the interview that I will have carried out previously. Thurs 4th Nov I will be creating on pages 9-10 on how streaming services affect the music industry. Fri 15th Oct This will be the final day of writing articles so I can spend the next few weeks solely focused on creating the fanzine. I will make sure I have written a reflection for each day including screenshots of my work. Fri 5th Nov For this day, I plan to finish creating the pages for the inside of the fanzine, I will be creating pages 11-12. I will also make sure all my reflections are up to date. Weds 20th Oct Today, I will be creating the front cover for my fanzine in the morning, in the afternoon I will be working on the overview and contents page to introduce the fanzine. Weds 10th Nov On Wednesday morning, I plan to create the back cover to finish off creating the fanzine. During the rest of the day, I will be going through the fanzine and fixing any mistakes. Thurs 21st Oct I will finish off the overview and contents page and then create the double page about record labels. Thurs 11th Nov I will be continuing fixing any issues with the fanzine pages and making sure the colour scheme and layout are clean and consistent and that there is no issues with the photo editing. Fri 22nd Oct I will create my interview double page spread, this includes photo editing of the artist and creating the layout. Also, I will check that I have written reflections for each day. Fri 12th Nov For the last day of production, I plan to put together the pages digitally to create a digital fanzine. I will once again check that my reflections are up to date, including screenshots, and then write an evaluation.
