1. OP-PEIL
Opportunities for controlled drainage in Flanders
OP-PEIL aims to support the adoption of controlled drainage systems in Flanders
which are viable from both an agronomic and an environmental point of view.
We will aggregate and further expand knowledge about controlled drainage in Flanders, offer
decision supporting guidelines and practical recommendations to interested farmers, stimulate and
coach farmers with the design and management of a viable controlled drainage system for their
specific situation, and disseminate all this information through workshops and demonstrations.
1: Suitability map and advisory tool
Development of a suitability map for controlled drainage in Flanders (see
below) and an online advisory tool on field scale
2: Field trials on subirrigation
Two field trials in which the potential for subirrigation in controlled drainage
systems is examined
3: Control of salinization
One field trial to assess the potential of controlled drainage for controlling
salinization
4: Collective management
Exploration of the potential for a more collective management of controlled
drainage systems on (sub-)catchment scale
5: Co-creation and practical implementation

Information about the physical boundary conditions for a succesful controlled drainage system is derived from availably geospatial
information for Flanders:
1. Soil type: texture class from the soil map of Belgium
2. Water availability: ‘drainage class’ from the soil map of Belgium
3. Slope: digital elevation model
