Common conventions:
A thriller usually consists of a battle between the protagonist character and
the antagonist, when there is a disruption in the equilibrium. Then the story
shows a chain of bad events building tension and suspense and climax. The
aim of the protagonist is to restore justice, while the antagonist seeks to
destroy it. By using common conventions of the genre thriller we will easily be
able to add this into our story as it perfectly matches what our script is about.
Conventions of a Thriller:
Low key lighting
Quick cuts
Shadows
Tension music
Changes in angle of shots
Diegetic sound of breathing
Black and white shots
Montage shots
Protagonist is in the mercy of the antagonist
Will we stick to them or will we subvert?
3. We will stick to most of the conventions apart from the most significant one
which is the gender; by having a female protagonist it will ensure that our film
stands out and can also have other advantages such as using the
assumptions of the female negatively and converting them to positive
assumptions instead; by doing this we can clearly subvert view of the public
and change their opinions about gender inequality. On the contrast, many
other factors should be kept the same in order to ensure that the audience
can infer that the films genre is Crime Thriller.
Will there be any problems and how will you overcome them?
· - The props we will be using are guns and handcuffs and these items are
hard to find, and therefore we will buy a toy gun and handcuff and when we
edit our film we will make it look real and professional.
· - In our story, there are two main characters which are twins as we couldn’t
find any twins we will use editing features when editing our story to make
them both present in the scene at the same time.
The location we had decided to use is near our area, so therefore we will
make sure we use our time efficiently, and there is also less travelling
involved.
Independent film or blockbuster and why?
Our film, will be an independant film due to its common advantageous
conventions such as:
-They often use unconventional filming techniques, for example John
Cossavetes(a prominent independent filmmaker) who was known for using
long shots in order to show the organic nature of the acting
-Protagonists are rarely generic, often have quirky attributes and are three
dimensional
In recent years, there has been a constant coming and going of actors and
directors between the two worlds, and the border has become very blurred.
Now free from the labels of major studios, an independent film is best
identified by its distribution network. However, as it is not distributed and
advertised by large corporations, independent cinema always needs to be
supported by a variety of festivals and associations of independent
filmmakers. Because of this cinema will always remain a cradle for new talent.
Filmmakers will continue to create movies with alternative and controversial
messages, for it is from this huge pool of talent and creativity that cinema as a
whole will continue to draw inspiration and develop.
Budget:
ÂŁ800,000
“For one, with an annual production budget of over $3 billion, the study found
that independent film spending "rivals" that of major studios'. The average
budget for an independent film was found to be $750,000 per movie.”
Time:
4. Movies take about 45-60 days of production. Post production can take around
6 months to a year. Film opening takes around 8days to film, but it depends
when the studio wants to release the picture.
