2. INTRODUCTION TO NANOTECHNOLOGY:-
• The term nanotechnology was first introduced by Richard Feynman in 1959
• Nanotechnology deals with the physical, chemical, and biological properties of
structures and their components at nanoscale dimensions
3. NANOTECHNOLOGY IN DENTISTRY
(NANODENTISTRY)
• The development of Nano-dentistry will allow nearly perfect oral health by the use of
nanomaterials and biotechnologies (including tissue engineering and nanorobots)
• Applications of Nanotechnology in Dentistry
• 1-Nanocomposites
• 2-Nanotechnology in Orthodontics
• 3-Hypersenstivity Cure
• 4-Digital dental imaging
• 5-Nanotechnology in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
4. 1-NANOCOMPOSITES
Dental resin nanocomposites are comprised of a mixture of the resin matrix,
nanofillers, photo-initiator, etc., to be filled into the cavity
-Nanofillers that are used in the dental composites are:-
A- Silica nanoparticles
B- Modified silica nanoparticles
C- Mesoporous silica nanoparticles
D-Nanocluster fillers (Zirconia-silica nanoparticles)
5. NANOCOMPOSITES
• Silica nanocomposites: These composites with silica nanoparticles. They were
developed to address the polishing requirements of the teeth surfaces.-Some
cariogenic bacteria that lives inside the oral cavity causes damage of the tooth
enamel thus silica nanoparticles polishing play a role in preventing dental caries.
• Modified silica nanoparticles: are used to treat dental hypersensitivity as they are
developed for the occlusion of dentinal tubules.
• Mesoporous silica: It is the most widely researched the last years.-possesses well-
defined structures, high surface areas, and high thermal stability.
6. NANOCOMPOSITES
Zirconia-silica nanoparticles
Synthesized from a colloidal solution of a
zirconia salt and silica. Advantages to
resin composite:-
a-Reduces the polymerization shrinkage
b-Improve physical properties and the
mechanical performance
7. 2-NANOTECHNOLOGY IN ORTHODONTICS
• Frictional force during sliding tooth along an arch
wire causes root resorption and loss of anchorage
• -Coating the orthodontic wire with inactive
fullerene-like tungsten disulfide nanoparticles
cause reduction in friction as it provides excellent
dry lubrication properties.
• -In future, these nanorobots could directly
manipulate periodontal tissues thus allowing a
rapid, painless tooth straightening, rotating,
vertical repositioning within minutes to hours.
8. 3-HYPERSENSTIVITY CURE
• Dentin hypersensitivity is pathologic phenomenon
that causes movement of fluid within the dentin
tubules
• A permanent solution could be done using gold
nanoparticles ( 5 nm in diameter) to occlude the
selected sub-micron sized dentinal tubules.
• sintering of highly concentrated gold
nanoparticles brushed into the exposed open ends
of dentinal tubules.
• Laser irradiation also induced the photo fusion of
gold nanoparticles via photothermal conversion.
9. 4-DIGITAL DENTAL IMAGING
• Advances in digital dental imaging techniques are also expected with
nanotechnology -In digital radiographies obtained by nanophosphor scintillators, the
radiation is reduced and high-quality images are obtained.
10. 5-NANOTECHNOLOGY IN ORAL AND
MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
• In Local anesthesia:
• -Painless methods of administration of
local anesthesia may be achievable by the
application of nanotechnology.
• -Colloidal suspension containing millions of
active analgesic nanoparticles will be
instilled on the patient’s gingiva.
• -They reach the pulp via the gingival
sulcus and dentinal tubules-Once reached
the pulp, these particles may shut down all
sensitivity in any particular tooth which
provide comfort to the patient.
