1. A LESSON PLAN BY COLETTE BROCHU FOR DR.
ROBERT POWER EDUC 5405G: DIGITAL
TECHNOLOGIES IN ADULT EDUCATION
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience is adult learners in the one-year post-graduate
Advertising Media Management program at Centennial College.
Students in this program have undergraduate degrees from various
fields of study ranging from Mass Communications to Political
Science. They also have different skill levels using Microsoft Excel
(which is a prominent spreadsheet software) widely used within the
media planning and buying industry.
COURSE INFORMATION
A class session to be conducted face-to-face in a
computer lab for the AMED 704: Introduction to Media
Planning course. Students need to be able to plan and
execute advertising campaigns using a multitude of media
communication channels. This lesson plan will focus on the
process of costing newspaper advertisements in Canadian
newspapers.
LESSON PLAN/LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Previous classes leading up to this one focused on the strengths and
weaknesses of communication channels connecting with target
audiences. They will now scaffold that knowledge into the execution
stage. Learning objectives are:
1. Calculate net, gross advertising rates and agency commission.
2. Explain the process for costing a newspaper campaign.
3. Determine total lines of an advertisement.
4. Cost a newspaper campaign.
5. Determine cost efficiency.
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
Five digital tools will be integrated into this lesson.
1. LMS
2. Google forms
3. Microsoft Powerpoint
4. Microsoft Excel
5. Adobe Spark video
ACTIVITIES
The instructor will hook the learners into the lesson plan
by holding up a full page advertisement in the Globe and
Mail and ask the students to guess how much the ad
costs. Students will be actively involved in achieving the
learning objectives by interacting with the following
technology:
• Google Forms
• Excel Spreadsheets
• Adobe Spark Video

A new program incorporates D2L's ePortfolio tool into
courses. Instructors require training on how to use the tool
and integrate it into the design of their course.

The Homework
The first part of the lesson involves a short presentation from
the instructor on reflective learning practice. The second part
of the lesson involves participants using the tool to create,
share, and provide feedback on reflections.
A face-to-face course is being offered to instructors teaching in
the new program. The course includes five lessons that will
teach pedagogical strategies on how to use the tool effectively.
Before the next lesson, participants should practice using
reflections in the tool and brainstorm how they will
incorporate reflective learning into their course.
This lesson will be delivered third in the course. The focus of the
lesson is on the uses and benefits of reflective learning strategies
in adult education and how to use reflections in the tool.
By the end of the lesson, participants should be able to explain
reflective learning and describe one benefit of its use. They should also
be able to create, share, and provide feedback on reflections in the tool.
