Welcome to
Class!
We acknowledge the lands and people of the
Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation which is
covered under the Williams Treaties. Ontario Tech
University is situated on the Traditional Territory of
the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater
Anishinaabeg Nation which includes Algonquin,
Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi.
Cape Breton University’s Department of
Education recognizes that Cape Breton Island is in
Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the
Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties
of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik
(Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in
1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and
resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and
Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for
what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

Community Contributions
(Assignment 4)
Much of the course discussions will take place either using discussion forums or during synchronous class
sessions in Zoom. You will have a chance to discuss issues pertaining to unit topics and readings, and to
respond to your classmates. By actively engaging with colleagues, you will participate in social formation of
new knowledge and understanding. You are also expected to show professionalism in your approach to
your coursework. This includes showing up on time, with equipment properly configured, for synchronous
class sessions and promptly responding to direct email or discussion forum requests. It also includes
completing all course assignments and activities by required deadlines. If you are not able to submit an
assignment or activity on time, you should contact your instructor (and/or group activity partners) IN
ADVANCE to make suitable arrangements.(10%)
