6. Spine Board
A spine board should be used whenever there is a
suspected injury to the spine. It is most commonly
used by Emergency Medical Service (EMS)
personnel when treating someone following a severe
fall or automobile accident that has caused a
possible spine injury. A spine board may also be used
by athletic trainers and other sports medicine
personnel to remove an athlete with a possible spine
injury from the field of play so that they may be
transported to a medical facility.
7. Splints
Splints are most commonly used to
immobilize broken bones or dislocated joints.
When a broken bone has been properly set, a
splint permits complete rest at the site of the
fracture and thus allows natural healing to
take place with the bone in the proper
position.
8. Pole Stretchers
Simple stretchers are the most rudimentary
type. They are lightweight and portable, made
of canvas or other synthetic material
suspended between two poles or tubular
aluminum frame.
9. First aid Blanket
An emergency blanket, sometimes
referred to as a first aid blanket, space
blanket, Mylar, thermal or weather
blanket, is used in emergencies to reduce
heat loss in a person's body caused by
thermal radiation, water evaporation
and convection.

looking for DCAP-BTLS:
D- Deformity B- Burns
C- Contusions T- tenderness
A- Abrasions L- Laceration
P- Puncture S- Swelling
17. Determine skin appearance
Look at the victim’s face and lips. Record
the skin appearance, temperature, moisture
and color.
Head - look for cuts and bruises
Eyes - check and compare pupils:
18. Reaction of the pupil to light and cases of
illness and injuries.
Constricted pupils - may mean heat stroke,
drug overdose
Dilated pupils - bleeding and state of shock
Unequal pupils -suspect head injury and
stroke
19. Nose, Ears and Mouth – check for fluid
or blood
Neck – gently feel the sides for signs of
injuries
Abdomen – check for tenderness by
pressing lightly with flat part of your fingers
Collar bone – check and compare
shoulders.
Chest/Ribs – check and compare ribs
20. Hip bones – press slowly downward
and inward for possible fracture
Spinal Column – place victim into
side-lying position and press gently
from cervical region down lumbar for
possible injury
Arm – inspect one at a time
