Combining dance and song workshop
1. Combining dance and song workshop
In the workshop today we aimed to apply dancing together with singing and place extra
attention on maintaining harmonies and vocal projection when dancing. My target was to
maintain overall correct movement and dancing style whilst remembering which part I
needed to jump in vocally and also remembering my harmonies with my peers. We were
tasked to put together our practiced sing song and dance of ‘It’s All Happening’ from ‘Bring
It on the Musical’. At first attempt we as a collective found it difficult, a particular weakness
of mine was I struggled with my vocal entries for my parts of the song as I was too busy
remembering my sequence of dance, multitasking was becoming a major difficulty. It was
clear that I needed more rehearsal on the dance until the whole routine became muscle
memory that way I wouldn’t be having to remember what move came up next and miss my
entries. However despite this a primary strength I had in this workshop was maintaining a
positive and professional frame of mind and influencing that on my peers. I noticed
immediately when mistakes were being made that the built up confidence we had in the
separate workshops regarding the dance and singing was lost when trying to combine the
art forms, which ultimately brought down the energy meaning my peers and I lost our
characterisation too. Although I quickly snapped out of this slump and tried to keep
everyone up beat emphasising we have time and that this workshop is what we needed as
now we know what to improve on. Miss completely agreed with and began to break down
our routine showing when to inject breath into it so we didn’t struggle with the notes and
remembered to deliver them. This began to work but it was clear for us to nail the
harmonies as a company we simply needed more rehearsal, this was a very constructive
rehearsal as it highlighted what we really needed to focus on.
