National Breeding Center for Freshwater Aquaculture was established on 22 December 1976 as the Sub-Institute for Marine Fisheries No. 1 which mainly focused on marine fisheries research. It belongs to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) since 2007. RIA2 is a key organization for the research and development of aquaculture technologies and related fields of fisheries in southern Vietnam.
I am very grateful to the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Can Tho University for providing me this opportunity to participate in this internship program in the National breeding Center for Freshwater Aquaculture.

• Development, application and dissemination of new aquaculture
technologies
• Supply quality seeds
• Training and extension activities
• International collaboration
9. NURSING OF THE CHANNEL CATFISH
Preparation of nursery tanks
12/22/2020 9
• Clean the tank before supplying water
• Scrub the walls and bottom thoroughly
• Use 100ppm chlorine solution
• Rest it for 7-10 days for disinfection
• Dry for 1-2 days to achieve bactericidal effect and evaporate
all chlorine
• Cover the surface of tank to avoid dragonfly larvae with net

11. Preparing the nursery tank
12/22/2020 11
• pH, NH3, NO: guaranteed to be within
good growth limits for the fish
• Installed with bottom aeration system
• To ensure suitable oxygen content for fish
• To ensure uniform distribution of feed
throughout the tank
12. Preparation of supply water
12/22/2020
• Water is supplied into the setting tank
through a filter net
• Chlorine treatment: 30ppm
• Rest it for 3 days to reach a safe chlorine
concentration
• Supply it to the nursing tanks
12
• Settling tank: prepared continuously
• For changing the water during the whole process
14. Stocking density of fry

15. Care management
12/22/2020 15
• The fry are produced from a reputable facility
• Age of fry from 20-24hours
• 800 dehydrated fry in 1ml
16. Management
12/22/2020 16
• Siphoning of the tank: every
two days
• Purpose: to remove the
uneaten feed and organic
matter accumulated at the
bottom of the tank
• By using a farm made equipment
• One hour after feeding when the siphoning is needed
17. Sampling
Why sampling is necessary???
12/22/2020 17
• To check the external parasites and
• Fish sample: taken to the pathology lab
:observed under the microscope
• To monitor growth performance (weight and length)
• Each sampling: 30 fish selected randomly from the ponds
18. Water quality
12/22/2020 18
• Every two days
• Recorded in the notebook
• Ensured water quality while
stocking the fry
• Temperature: 26-30
• pH: 7-9
• DO: 4-6 mg/l
• NH3:0
• NO2:0
19. Feeding
Moina:
Artemia:
12/22/2020 19
• Prepared on advance: to ensure the right time and quality
for fry to be fed on same diet and day
• 1g of the cyst: around 200,000 artemia (hatching rate 85%)
• Feed intake: 9RFL (reference feeding level)
• Collected, washed thoroughly with clean water and soaked in
Virkon (1ppm/10minutes)
• Stocking into nursery tanks
20. Commercial feed
