2. Marine Products Export Development Authority
• After Independence, Seafood industry needed an
organization to lead the market promotion of Indian
seafood products abroad and utilize fishery potential.
• This need has led to the formation of the
Marine Products Export Promotion Council
( MPEPC ) by the Government of
India in September 1961.

3. • Promoting & developing export of marine products and
seafood export promotion has become the mission of
MPEPC.
• The port of Cochin, which handled about 60% of seafood
exports in those days made Cochin the ideal home for the
MPEPC to set up its base.
• But in 1972 MPEDA was constituted under the Marine
Products Export Development Authority Act 1972
(No. 13 of 1972) and replaced MPEPC.

• Functions under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India
• Acts as a coordinating agency with different Central and State
Government establishments engaged in fishery production and
allied activities.
• The functions of MPEDA are guided by an Authority and 3
Standing Committees of MPEDA.They are;

• It is the R & D arm of MPEDA
• The no profit no loss motto has made breakthroughs
not only in culture technologies of Shrimps but also in
diversified species such as Seabass, Groupers, Mud Crab etc.

15. Network for Fish Quality Management
and Sustainable Fishing (NETFISH)
• An extension arm of MPEDA
• The major objectives are to empower fisheries sector by
imparting knowledge to fishermen, processing workers, &
technicians on fish quality management, conservation of fish
resources and sustainable fishing.

16. National Centre for Sustainable
Aquaculture (NaCSA)
• An extension arm of MPEDA
• An outreach organization of MPEDA to provide technical
support to the primary aquaculture societies.
Main objectives of NaCSA
o Promote science-based management to improve aquaculture
sustainability.
o Empower and build capacity of small scale aquaculture farmers.
o Facilitate improved service provision to small scale aquaculture farmers.
o Connect farmers to markets to receive better prices for good quality
products.
o Facilitate interaction among stakeholders.

QC Laboratories
• Kochi , Bhimavaram, Nellore (A P) and in Bhubaneswar (Odisha)
• Approved by the National Accreditation Board forTesting
and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), a member of the
International Laboratory Accreditation Co-operation (ILAC)
• Equipped with high precision sophisticated equipment such as

• The Scheme may be called the Marine Products (Quality Marking)
Scheme, 2010.
• To qualify for the logo scheme, the products should have a standard
for its

oPesticide and metal residues
oUse of additives

19. ELISA laboratories
• To ensure antibiotic free raw material for export production
• Pre harvest screening of aqua cultured shrimps for banned
antibiotics like Chloramphenicol and Nitrofuran metabolites.
• 12 Elisa screening laboratories are operating in the country for
facilitating Pre HarvestTesting (PHT) of farmed shrimp.
