3. ANSWER PART (A):
1. Describe why finding solutions to environmental problems is so difficult. Do you think
it has always been as complicated?
Answer 1:
Finding solutions to environmental problems is so difficult because all the sections of
environment are involved with science, nature, health, employment, profits, politics,
ethics, and economics. Which, environment is classified in two categories: Natural
Environment and Social Environment. Moreover, most social and political decisions are
made with respect to political jurisdictions, but environmental problems do not
necessarily coincide with these artificial political boundaries. In addition, many problems
and solutions, but there aren't enough resources to perform them. I think it has always
been as complicated.
2. Describe what is meant by an ecosystem approach to environmental problem solving.
Is this the right approach?
Answer 2:
An ecosystem approach is very important to dealing with environmental problem
solving. Moreover, the task of an environmental scientist is to recognize and understand
the natural interactions that take place and to intergrate these with the uses humans must
make of the natural world. An ecosystem is a region in which the organisms and the
physical environment from an interacting unit. And, environmental science involves an
understanding that the natural world is organized into interrelated units called
ecosystems. Thus, ecosystem was involved taking into account all affected aspects of the
ecosystem, and finding a solution that does not negatively impact any individual aspect,
or at least has as little a negative effect as possible. So, this is right approach.
3. List two key environmental issues for each of the following regions: the wilderness
North, the agricultural middle, the forested West, the dry West, the Great Lakes and
industrial Northeast and the South. How are the issues changing?
Answer 3:
List two key environmental issues for each of the following regions:
4. • The Wilderness North:
- Resources exploitation involves significant trade-offs as these ecosystems are
sensitive to insults and take a long time to repair damage caused by exploitation.
- Many short-term political and economic decisions have failed to look at long-term
environment implications. Native peoples in these areas are sensitive to changes in
land use or government policy that would force changes in traditional ways of life. -
Increasingly sophisticated in negotiations.
• The Agricultural Middle:
- Middle of North America is dominated by intensive agriculture. Originally, natural
ecosystems have been replaced by managed agriculture.
- Tremendous economic value. Mostly private land- large economic risks, and major
non-point pollution source Soil erosion and groundwater contamination Fertilizer and
Pesticides.
5. • The Forested West:
- The policy change has become a major issue in the old-growth forests of the Pacific
Northwest, where timer interests maintain that they must have access to government-
owned forests in order to remain in business.
- Environmental organizations are concerned about the consequences logging would
have on organisms that require mature, old-growth forest for their survival.
• The Dry West:
- Characterized by areas where rainfall is inadequate for agriculture, but adequate
enough to allow livestock production.
- Because much of western U.S. is of low economic value, most is still controlled by
U.S government. Encourages use by providing cheap water for livestock and
irrigation, cheap grazing fees, and access for industrial development.
• The Great Lakes and industrial Northeast:
- Great Lakes and Northeast are dominated by large metropolitan complexes with large,
complex resource demands. Many older cities have declined, leaving behind
abandoned sites and environmental problems.
- One of the greatest problems is water contamination from toxic material.
Bioaccumulation in the food chain. Fish Advisories.
• The Diverse South:
- Extremely rapid population growth in some areas such as coastal regions.
- Pockets of extreme poverty.
ANSWER PART (B):
4. Define environment and ecosystem and provide examples of these terms from your
region.
Answer 4:
The environment can be defined as:
“Those things all the living and non living that surround us including the cultural
activity of human” (Concepts and Issues: A Focus on Cambodia). [Chapter 1, 3rd
Slide]. For example: Environment is classified in two categories: Natural
Environment and Social Environment.
Natural Resources Environment:
6. - Physical Resources: Air, Water and Land
- Biological Resources: Animals, Plants are living in water and on land.
Socio-Economic Resources: Population, Land Uses, Water Supply Infrastructure,
Community, and Culture (MoE, 2009).
The ecosystems can be defined as:
“natural or managed, and management can vary over a wide range of actions”. [Chapter 1,
19th
and 20th
Slide]. For example: The term ecosystem is applied to areas of all sizes, from
the smallest puddle of water to a large forest to the entire global biosphere.
5. Describe how environmental conflicts are resolved.
Answer 5:
Environmental issues are a lot of but people still have resolution to solve it. We are
going to talk about three solutions that we will discuss below this article. First, Recycle the
waste to conserve natural resources which mean that some trash that we threw away and
can be reuses it again. Second, the use of paper should be avoided. Because, the papers
was made from the trees so which mean people cut the to produce as the papers. In the
future when we lost much the tree, the earth will destroy such as flood or drought. Last,
Replace disposal items with reusable items which mean everything that should not be
throw away out, but we We will process it into something that can be used. Environmental
issues are still a warning of the upcoming disaster. If any problems are not controlled,
there will soon be no life on earth.
6. Select a local environmental issue and write a short essay presenting all sides of the
question. Is there a solution to this problem.
Answer 6:
In my local where I live in is has a lot of pollution from urbanization or other
industries. This issue is become a major problem that it affected to the living of people in
there. Those industries have polluted by such as air and water. Air pollutions mean like
dirty gases which could be harmful to people's health when they took the breath it and
7. water pollution on the other hand is contaminating our water source like lakes, ponds,
rivers. It is not only polluted by toxic gas, but also made some annoying one more level.
Thus, some issues still have the cause that cannot find any solutions.
But, we have afew solutions that we should to do it. First, they should decrease
producing any products for do not make increasing of pollution like air and water.
Second, we should keep our fresh water far away from the dirty water. And last, we
should plant more trees to reduce toxic fumes. In brief, we will have one environmental
that different from before.
