14. What is it?
Learning Activity 1: Graphic Organizer
Directions: complete the graphic organizer with the
necessary information. Give atleast 2 ideas/concept
about environment and environmental science. Study
and analyzed the paragraph below. Answer the guide
questions. Write your answer in your notebook.
17. • Based on the song, we are presently facing many environmental
issues and concerns, including problem on the destruction and
depletion of our natural resources. This issues, concerns and
problems are interrelated, coming together as one great threat to
human survival and environmental preservation.
• Environmental science- it is the study of the environment, the
processes it undergoes, and the problem that arise generally from the
intersections of humans with the environment. It is the study of
patterns and processes in the natural world and their modification by
human activity.
18. Guide Question no.1
•What environmental problems happens in
your community or locality?
•Is environmental science important?
19. • Is this science important? In environmental science,
environmental concerns such as global warming, air and
water pollution, hazardous waste proliferation, garbage
problems, and depletion of biodiversity and other natural
resources are studied. Renewable resources or those
resources that can be easily be replaced should be preserved
and those non- renewable resources or those that cannot be
easily renewed should be conserved. This science will
enlighten us about the importance of protection and
conservation, and our indiscriminate release of pollution into
the environment.
20. Guide question no. 2
•What are examples of renewable and non-
renewable resources in your area?
21. Three main goal of environmental science
To learn how the
natural world
functions
To understand
how we human
interact with the
environment and
also;
To determine
how we affect
the
environment
22. ENVIRONMENT
• Literally, environment means the
surrounding external conditions
influencing development or growth of
people or animal or plants, living or
working conditions.
• The environment consists of four major
components.
1. atmosphere- implies the protective
blanket of gases surrounding the
earth.
2. Hydrosphere-compose of all types of
water resources
23. 3. lithosphere- solid portion
of the earth composed of
rock and soil.
4. biosphere- indicates the realm of living
organisms and their interactions with the
other organisms living in the
atmosphere, hydrosphere and
lithosphere
24. Environment is constituted by the interacting
systems of physical, biological and cultural
elements inter-related in various ways,
individually as well as collectively. These
elements maybe explained as under.
• Physical elements- these are spaces, landforms, water beaches,
climate, soils, rocks and minerals. They determine the variable
character of the human habitat, its opportunities, as well as limitations.
• Biological elements- these are plants, animals, microorganisms and
men constitute the biosphere.
• Cultural element- such as economic, social, and political elements that
are essentially man-made features.
26. Environmentalist- an individual who
promotes environmental awareness
and advocates for the protection of
the environment.
Environmental scientist-
is a specialist who
studies, collects, and
analyses data pertaining
to environmental
conditions or problems.
27. For your information
Macli-ing Dulag a Filipino
Environmentalist. He
was a respected elder of
the Butbut tribe in the
mountain village of
Bughay in the Cordilleras
and known for his
opposition to the Chico
River Damn Project.
29. SCIENCE DEFINITION
1. Physics Deals with matter and energy and
the interactions between them.
2. Chemistry Deals with matter, its composition,
structure and properties and the
changes if undergoes.
3. Mineralogy Science that deals with the study
of minerals
4. Oceanography The study of the physical,
chemical and biological features of
the ocean
30. SCIENCE DEFINITION
5. Geology The study of the earth, rocks and
other geologic features
6. Geography The study of places and the
relationships between people and
their environments
7. Zoology Deals with the study of animals
8. Botany The study of plants
9. Limnology The study of inland
10. Ecology The study of the relationship between
the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic)
31. What’s More
Independent Activity 1
Directions: Environmental science is the study of the environment
and the processes it undergoes. Complete the concept map by
giving four words or concepts that show relationship associated to
environmental science and explain each. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.
33. Rubric for Concept Mapping
SCORE DESCRIPTIONS
20 Gives 3-4 concepts and clearly explain its relationship to Environmental Science
15 Gives 1-2 concepts and clearly explain its relationship to Environmental Science
10 Gives 3-4 concepts and somewhat explain its relationship to Environmental
Science
5 Gives 3-4 concepts and somewhat explain its relationship to Environmental
Science
2 No concept and explanation are given
34.
35. Independent assessment
Directions: Classify wether the description is a work of
Environmentalist or an Environmental Scientist. Write E if
it is an environmentalist and write ES if it is an
environmental scientist.
_______1. Supporters of the goals of the environmental
movement.

environment.
_______3. Protects to regulate, control and prevent
pollution.
36. _______ 4. Specialist who studies, collects, analyses data
pertaining to environmental problems.
_______ 5. Promotes environmental protections.
37. Independent Activity 2
Directions: Using the Venn Diagram. Give the similarities and differences
of environment from environmental science. In the circles that overlap,
write the similarities while those that do not overlap write the differences.
Environment Environmental science
38. Rubric for Venn Diagram
Score Description
5 The student clearly explains all the similarities and differences of environment and
environmental science
4 The student explains some of the similarities and differences of environment and
environmental science.
3 The student explains few of the similarities and differences of environment and
environmental science
2 The student explains little of the similarities and differences of environment and
environmental science
1 The student did not clearly explain the similarities and differences of environment
and environmental science
39. Independent Assessment 2
Directions: Essay. Briefly answer the following
questions in your paper. As a young Filipino student who
value and love not only his country but also his
environment.
1. Would you like to be an environmentalist or an
environmental scientist? Why?
2. What environmental concern will you give your
utmost attention? Why?
40. Assessment
Directions: Modified True or False. Write true if the statement is
correct, if the statement is false change the underline word(s) to
make it true.
1. Environmental science is the study of patterns and processes
in the natural world and their modification by human activity.
2. Collects and analyses data pertaining to environmental
conditions or problems is the work of an environmentalist.
