2. MMA On Point is a YouTube channel that reports on current
and past topics within the sport of mixed martial arts.
They use a style of narration over images and video clips of
what they are talking about. I enjoy this style as it keeps the
audiences attention throughout the video, they are also very
informative and good with detail with what they are
reporting/ talking about.
Since their channel is about MMA which is the subject I am
also going to be talking about, this will help as I will use some
of the information that they themselves have said as it is true
and helpful with the project I am doing.
Although their style is very basic, it is also effective as it does
not try to go above and beyond in presentation as this will
take the audiences attention away from the information
being presented. This is what I want my project to look like as
it is effective to the point where you, as the audience, learn
what you are being told and your visual attention is staying on
the video too.
3. Full Reptile is a podcast/ analyst channel of a former MMA
world title contender, Dan Hardy.
Dan Hardy has had a large career in the world of MMA and
made it to the UFC to challenge GSP for his welterweight
world championship. Dan Hardy is one of the main public
figures to make way for UK MMA.
After his retirement, he started his own YouTube channel and
got a job at the UFC as an announcer and analyst. With his
YouTube channel, he talks about upcoming fights and also
previous fights/ careers of fighters. He is very analytical in his
work and uses the same sort of style as MMA On Point by
talking about what is happening but instead of him narrating
over pictures and videos. He uses fight footage and dissects it
for the audience. This is more visual rather than audio
although, he does have a podcast version, it doesn'tāt work
as well due to their being a lack of visual representation.
I would like to be as analytic as Dan Hardy but for my project
it would not fit but the fact of visual representation being a
must in his work, helps me decided that I would also like to
use visual representations within my project as appose to it
just being a audio project.
4. Strong Opinion Sports is a podcast run by independently by Zac
Shomler who is a former college Quarter Back. Zac and his podcast is
mainly about the NFL and the happening within the league including
news and up and coming stars, he does a great segment in where he
analyses film from up and coming players from college to see how
they will fair within the NFL. He also covers other sports such as the
NBA, F1 and the NHL, although he primarily focusā on the NFL.
Zacās show is great at he has a YouTube channel which co- exists with
his podcast so he can upload specific segments from the podcast
straight to YouTube as a highlight and he records his podcast with
video and audio but for people who do not want to watch the
podcast they can go on other media sites such as SoundCloud to
listen to his show without having to watch it at the same time.
Zac for his show is very analytic and puts a lot of effort into the
research he does making sure he gets all the facts out there and gives
different perspectives to show the audience how others can see the
situation. For my documentary, I would like to put as much work and
research into it as Zac does for Strong Opinion Sports and show my
audience other peopleās perspectives rather than being biased and
only showing it how I would see it. This would help make my piece
more respectable as it wonāt be just me throwing my opinion out.
5. British Pathe is a YouTube channel who make small history
documentaries on more war based subjects. They use the
style of being basic by only using footage and photos whilst
narrating over the visuals.
As previously mentioned, this is the style I want to do for my
short factual piece.
They also make the narration a more serious tone compared
to my other research pieces which I leaning more towards
doing this style as I do not want to add a sense of comedy
into my piece and I think a more monotone narration would
help with the re- reading of the history which is something
more in common with the British Pathe.
6. Research summary:
To summarise my research, I have decided that I am going to be doing my project in a documentary style. I am doing this
as I am revising the history of a sport that it new to the world and I believe that the story and history behind the sport is
something that more people need to know about. I will be using photos and videos as my visual stimulation for the
audience, these videos and photoās will be of historical significance as they are etched into the history of the sport, I will
be getting these pictures and videoās off the internet as I do not have any myself but after looking at copyright laws, I can
use them under the fair use act as long as I credit the lawful owner, which is what I will do. I will also be using a
monotone voice for the narration to help show the audience the seriousness and importance of what I am saying which I
believe is necessary.
I will be taking most of my inspiration of the format in which I am doing this piece of work from the British Pathe as they
use this format more than the other companyās I have researched. Although, I will be taking inspiration from MMA On
Point as I have decided to use transitions to help layer and split up my product to make it easier to follow.
