The Misfits podcast.
For the Misfits podcast they use multiple camera
angles, a main one where you can see all members of
the podcast in one shot and then the camera angles
change depending on who is talking; a separate camera
is shown which is fixated on that single person as a way
of focusing on that person. This is good and looks very
professional and makes is more visually interesting for
the audience to watch. In post-production they add
some music and even sponsor ads that the podcast
gets. All members of the podcast are put together and
are in 1 room which makes it good as they can all
interact with eachother, which can be entertaining for
the audience. They use multiple box lights behind the
cameras and even have LED lights spelling the name of
the podcast to create a more eye- grabbing set. They
don’t have any specific costumes apart from all of
them wear the merch of the podcast. In this podcast
they speak about multiple topics in one sitting and this
can make it hard to listen to as they go through stories
very fast and don’t stick to one subject. This shows that
they have no script which could be seen as good as it
means they say what they want to say but also it
means that the podcast loses control and they just go
off into saying whatever they want, losing structure and
focus. They don’t use any props when they are recording
the podcast either. This is fine as I won’t be doing
anything like that in my project. Apart from the merch
that they wear as a way to promote their podcast, they
don’t push the audience to buy anything bar their
sponsors, this is good as some podcasts always push their
audience to buy things such as merch but the misfits
podcast don’t do that, they just wear it and say you can
get some yourself if you want to support them and the
podcast.

TMG Podcast.
For this podcast they use just one camera angle
which is head on and you can see both hosts in this
shot, this keeps it easy and simple for the audience
to watch and follow. They have a studio where they
record the podcast. In this podcast they have no
specific costumes and don’t use props within their
podcast. For the podcast they have some box lights
behind the camera and also use some natural
lighting from the window on the right of the
screenshot. They don’t use many bright colours in
their production but find all of their value in the
topics they are talking about. In this podcast they
have a script that they loosely follow, which is the
format that I want to use in my podcast, they go
onto a topic and talk about it then when they are
done with the topic there is no awkward silence as
they have more topics to talk about and even edit
parts where I am assuming there is an awkward
silence phase. Apart from this, they don’t do
anything in post- production as they do
sponsor ads in the live podcast and they
have no background music that they add
in either. They also have merch for the
podcast that can be found on their website
which they do plug at the beginning and
end of every podcast to remind the
audience that they can buy it to support
the podcast. Apart from their own merch
and the sponsors, they don’t promote
anything else or push to get their audience
to buy stuff.

Cold Ones.
For the cold ones podcast they have their own
studio that they own just to film and edit the
podcast. They have multiple camera angles such
as a main angle where you see all the members
of the podcast and then when one member or a
guest is speaking it can switch to a handheld
camera done by one of the two assistants
behind the cameras to focus only that person
who is speaking, this can lead to great post-
production edits, which makes the viewing
experience funnier and better for the audience.
For lighting the podcast uses maybe one or two
neutral lights but mostly, as you can see, bright
LED’s to cover the rest of the room, this makes
the set more eye grabbing to the audience. The
podcast doesn’t use music in post and do their
sponsor reads live and just before their guest
arrives onto the set. The hosts also wear their
sponsors T-shirts and read an ad for the shop
and also have the T-shirts dotted around the
set on the walls, as you can see. The podcast
sometimes heavily promotes the T-shirts to the
audience which can drive buys but also can be
off putting to the audience as it can sometimes
get annoying. They don't really use a script as
the podcast involves drinking, so they, at the
beginning, have questions to ask their guest
and then, through alcohol, this deteriorates
into just general chat and questions.

H3H3 Podcast.
For the H3H3 Podcast they have a studio that
they film in, in this studio they use lighting from
the normal light fixtures in the roof and don’t use
any special sort of lighting to help the set/ image.
For the camera angles, they use one main
camera angle where the audience can see all of
the members of the podcast in one shot and
when one person is talking the camera can
change to another camera that is looking directly
and solely on that person, this is helpful to the
audience and makes the audience focus on what
that person is saying more. In this podcast they
don’t have any specific costumes and don’t use
props often. They do promote their own clothing
brand which they also do sometimes wear during
the podcast and aswell as this and other
sponsors they do this live and not in post. They
don’t add music into the podcast but do add
sound clips that can be relevant to what is
happening but that is not in post but put in
live by their audio master who is behind the
camera with a sound board. They do follow,
heavily, a script based on questions that they
want to ask their guests or talk about certain
situations. This is good as it makes sure that
they stay on track and do not get lost in the
podcast but at the same time, does feel like
some subjects are rushed and forced which
is un-natural and can be, at times, off
putting.

The Joe Rogan Experience:
The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) is the most
listened to and financially successful podcast
in the world. For the JRE, they use a set that
has been designed to optimize sound quality
with the walls being covered in sound
proofing foam. In the podcast, a script is not
used but instead whatever is on the guest's or
Joe's mind is said or questioned. One camera
angle is used throughout the podcast, a shot
of the table, showing the whole table, in the
case of if there are more than one guest one,
to fit them in frame. Joe does do ad read's
live and does them at the start of the
podcast, end and will even plug his own
merch during the podcast. This can get
annoying and repetitive for audience
members. There is nothing done in the fact of
post- production apart from if a video clip is
being shown, they will edit that in for the
audience watching at home. Apart from this, the
video/ audio that is in question is shown to the
people in the studio via T.V. For lighting, they use
the natural lights in the studio rather than more
professional lighting, this has come under
scrutiny as the majority of the audience dislike
this look as say it is a majoy distraction for them
when watching.
Existing Product.
Strong Opinion Sports:
This is a podcast that is largley based around
information given for the NFL. The set is very
simple as it is just one room with soundproof foam
around it with one soft box light behind the
camera aswell as the normal lighting from the
room. There is one camera shot, it is just a head
on shot that is a close shot of the presentor. Post-
production editing is involved but very basic, only
pictures/ logos are added but does help with the
audience incase they are not fully following and
need help to understand what the host is talking
about. The podcast heavily follows a script, which
is very detailed. The podcast is broken up via these
subjects in the script. There is some promotion at
the start of some, not all, of the Strong Opinion
Sports podcasts, these can be sponsorships or
more recently, the merch of the podcast. This is
only done once and is at the very beginning so
it does not get in the way of the flow and
does not get to irritate the audience.
Heavily following the script does hinder
the podcast sometimes as the host has to
"stop himself" from getting off topic which
can sometimes distrupt the flow of the
podcsat but is usually well structured and
flows very well, this would be beneficial
for my podcast but I feel a more loosley
based podcast would fit the style more.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?:
• They all have one main camera angle which shows all of the members of the podcast in it, this helps
the audience see who is going to be participating in the podcast, in the case that guests are being
had on. They also all have some sort of neutral lighting put on the set where they are filming to
help the audience see better and not strain eyes. Also, the majority of the podcasts do their
sponsors or ad reads at the beginning of the podcast before they get into the detail and the ones
that do just plug sponsors/ merch relentlessly throughout the podcast, are usually seen as annoying
and received poorly, I will not be doing this and will focus on doing my ad read, if I choose to have
one, at the very beginning of the podcast to avoid it being distracting or annoying to the audience.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your own work?:
• I will include a made-up sponsor which I will do either live or put in post depending on how much
detail I decide I want to put into it. I am leaning more towards recording my ad read outside of the
podcast recording to make it less awkward and make sure I do not go off track or get distracted
when doing it, to seem more professional. I will not be doing a visual podcast but an audio only
podcast, meaning I will have to rely on music transitions and audio queues to determine what is
happening. I will also be making a script of bullet points that I am wanting me and the partners
to loosely follow as I want the podcast to flow more and seem more relaxed rather than being up
tight and not being able to say what we want without fearing going too far-off track, although, this
will be kept in check as that will be a waste of time and will have to be cut in post- production.
Subject Research

Riot Games
Riot games are the creators of the game, Leauge of
Legends, what my podcast will be based on. Riot games
release a load of information and updates relating to, the
game and its current and future state and sometimes the
community. I can partially trust Riot Games as they are
the direct source but sometimes have been known to do
somethings behind the scenes without detiailing it to the
public when they should have. Such as updates to the
game aswell as the community which can lead to
contraversy. They are the overall easiest place to get
information from and do research on as all of the
information is easy to get to and also the detials and
information is well layed out on their official website.
Community
For researching the community, it will be more difficult to do and find
information as the community for League of Legends is based around
the live streaming website, twitch. Luckily, there are YouTube channels
that I can use/ watch that make daily content, using clips from live
streams that help show what important people in the community are
saying and how they act. This can be reliable as it means I do not have
to watch an impossible amount of content to find something that
might not even be there. It also has the chance to not be reliable as
they only use clips from the live stream of varying lengths which
means I could lose context for the clips. This means I will have to find a
clip, go to the stream and hope the streamer kept the VOD so I can
watch the stream and make sure I can see what the context was of the
clip as a way to make sure I do not relay any misinformation to the
audience.
Reliable Sources
Finding reliable sources for League of Legends content is
hard to find as people who spout information online are
usually wrong. Although, there is one person who creates
and releases spread sheets of the upcoming patches to
the game, even before Riot Games do and goes into
extreme detail in the changes, more so than what Riot
Games release when they roll out the update. This person
is the lead gameplay designer for Leauge of Legends so
that is where he gets his information and releases it and
has not been wrong ever since uploading so I will use this
account on twitter as a way to see a more reliable way to
what is happening and with more detiaul that is usually
being released to the public and player base.

League of Legends Demographic
According to statista.com, the main demographic for League of
Legends is played by all agr groups but the majority is 25- to 34-year-
olds.
This is surprising as the target demographic for the game is roughly 12-
19, this is based off of the games rating of 12+ but also how they
advertise their product in a more cartoonish way.
This will help me and my presenters with the language that we can use
as the demographic is higher than expected and will not be
detrimental for us to have to watch what lenguage we use. Although,
we will not just be swearing and using profanity and still make an
effort to make it more suitable for younger generations as to not
alienate them or make them feel uncomfortable, it just means we can
be more us and not have to think as much to what we are saying and
whether it is appropriate or not.
Podcast Demographic
Finding out the demographic for podcasts can be difficult as
anyone can make one and for any sort of audience but they
are mainly seen as a more mature genre of media which is
beneficial to my project as the main demographic for Leauge
is more mature than what was expected but at the same time,
it is also detrimental towards my project as it has the
possibility to put off the younger demographic and make
them feel alienated. I can try and combat this by doing most
of my adversitment in a more childish or cartoony way but not
in a way that would put off the more mature demographic as
they are the main target audience and who I am wanting to be
my main audience for the podcast.
Audience Summary
The maindemographic from both League of Legends and
podcast listeners are roughly 20-34, this is large range.
This is beneficial though as with the media of a podcast, it
can be aimed to a large group of people due to its simple
nature. This means that I will have to do more of a
simpler marketing to attract more of the younger
audience but not too simple as to drive away the older
demographic as they are the main target. I am doing this
as to try not and alienate any sort of age group to get my
prodcut to appeal to the biggest amount of people and
get more listens and potential audience.
Targets
Oliver Ingham
Create a realistic product
I do not want to create a vision that is unatainable for me
to do. To help combat this, I will keep my ideas simple to
start with and then expand on them when I am in the
middle of making them, this will help me in seeing what I
am able to do and how I can incorporate my skills into my
work, rather than just stating what I want to do and not
being able to do that thing, putting me behind in my
work.
I must also be able to research all of the subjects I want
to discuss in my podcast, I will do this by writing down
points and subjects and quickly looking into them to see
how detailed I can be with my work to make sure I can
provide the audience with the most accurate information.
Questionnaire Analysis
Oliver Ingham
Questionnaire Questions.
• 1) Do you watch/ listen to podcasts?
• 1a) (If yes) What podcasts do you watch/ listen and how
often would you say you watched/ listened to them?
• 1b) (If no) Is there any specific reason as to why you don’t
watch/ listen to podcasts?
• 2) How have you heard of the podcast(s)?
• 3) In your opinion, what is the most effective way of
advertising?
• 4)Are you interested in any video games?
• 5) Have you heard of a game called “League Of Legends?”
• 5a) (If yes) Would you listen to a League Of Legends
podcast?
Audience research
• Observation: This person is into academic subjects so a podcast about video games,
which they are not all too interested in, would not be for them. They also have no
clue on what is the most efficient way to advertise towards them.
• What this says about my audience: This says I need to cater my project towards
people who are into video games at the least and who want more out of a podcast
bar from academic benefits.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product won’t appeal to this
member of the audience at all as they have no interest within in the specific game
and don’t have any interest in listening to the podcast.
Georgia:
1) Sometimes, usually just listen though.
1a)Academic podcasts when I need to do some research, so not very often.
2) General research.
3) No clue.
4) Somewhat.
5) Nope.
Audience research
• Observation: This person is into podcasts revolving around crime as it is the only one they
seem to listen to. They realise that the best way to promote a podcast is on social media, I
will take this into account as it seems to be the most effective method and promote my
podcast through social media.
• What this says about my audience: This says I need to cater my project towards people who
are into video games but also be more specific and into League Of Legends as even though
this person plays video games and have heard of League Of Legends, they won’t listen to the
podcast.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I don’t think my product will be able to
appeal to this person as even though they have heard of the game and play games
themselves, they have said they won’t listen to the podcast, there is a slight possibility that I
may be able to convince them to listen to it through advertising.
Jodie:
1) Yes.
1a) I listen to true crime garage about 1-2 times every 2 weeks.
2) Podcast app on my phone.
3) I think it works and the most effective is promoting it on social media.
4) Yes.
5) Yeah.
5a) No, not really.
Audience research
• Observation: This person would not be interested into my product at all due to the fact that
they have never heard of League Of Legends and don’t really play video games, they also
don’t like the idea of podcasts. They have mentioned that using social media and YouTube to
advertise is the most effective method so I will keep that in mind when figuring out how to
advertise my product.
• What this says about my audience: This shows that I need to promote my product towards
people who are at least interested in podcasts and are willing to listen to them as it will be a
waste to promote a product to someone who isn’t interested at all in the style of the
product.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product won’t appeal to this audience
member as they don’t listen to podcast and don’t find them interesting and also at the same
time don’t even know what League Of Legends is.
Elleicia:
1) No
1b) I’ve never found one that has interested me.
2) I’ve seen them on YouTube and social media ads.
3) I would say YouTube ads because you’re forced to watch them for at least 5 seconds.
4) Only very casually.
5) No.
Audience research
• Observation: This person is not interested in podcasts at all and do not even play or know
about games, it would be useless to promote my product towards this person. Although,
they have mentioned that they understand that promoting ads on social media and music
platforms such as Spotify are the most effective methods to promote our product.
• What this says about my audience: This says I need to cater my project towards people who
are into video games at the least and people who even watch/ listen to podcasts, otherwise,
it is a waste of time and possibly money.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product won’t appeal to this member of
the audience at all as they don’t listen to podcasts or find them interesting in any sort of way
and also they don’t play games never mind being more specific with League Of Legends.
Amy:
1) No.
1b) Never felt it necessary or been particularly interested.
2) My siblings talk about them regular and on ads from Spotify.
3) I think ads on social media and none skippable ones on YouTube and Spotify are the best.
4) No.
5) No.
Audience research
• Observation: This person has the possibility to be interested in my product, that is due to the
fact that this person likes a comical podcast which is what I am aiming my product to be
slightly, as well as informative. This person also said that they think promoting my product
on social media is the best idea to get people to come listen.
• What this says about my audience: This shows that I may be able to mix genres of my
podcast to be able to reach a wider audience, this would be very beneficial as having more
people listen to the podcast is the aim.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: This person may listen to the podcast as I am
wanting to make the podcast comical as well as informative, this will help the podcast reach
a wider audience and maybe bring in more people that just our main target audience.
Alysia:
1) I listen to them only sometimes.
1a) Some of the podcasts are just people chatting and overall funny ones and I listen to them
maybe once a month. Then others are more informative, ones like TED Talks and I listen to them
on the odd occasion when it’s something I am actually interested in.
2) Through people who do the podcast promoting them on social media.
3) I would say it worked and I think the best way of advertisement is through social media.
4) Not really.
5) Only once or twice.
5a) No.
Audience research
• Observation: My product won’t appeal to this person as they have heard of the game in
topic but are not interested in listening to a podcast about it. They did say that the best way
to advertise is to use social media, I will use this to promote my podcast.
• What this says about my audience: This says I need to cater my project towards people who
are into League Of Legends more specifically as people who have even heard of it will not
listen to the podcast, this shows that if it doesn’t link to something that they like and find
interesting then they won’t listen to it as they won’t find it interesting.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will not appeal to this member
of the audience as even though they have heard of League Of Legends they will not listen to
a podcast about it, this shows that they have no interest in the game.
Ben
1) Regularly.
1a) The true Geordie podcast and every time is releases.
2) Through different YouTubers.
3) I would say the advertising works due to the growth of the podcast and use of social media.
4) Yes.
5) I have heard of it, yeah.
5a) No.
Audience research
• Observation: This person will not want to listen to the podcast or
even try it as they do not like podcasts in general, they would
rather listen to things like music rather than listen to a podcast.
• What this says about my audience: This shows me that obviously I
need to promote my podcast to people who actually like and listen
to podcasts and games more specifically.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will not
appeal to this audience member at all.
Lucy
1) No.
1b) I don’t know to be honest, I don’t have an interest I would rather listen to music.
2) Spotify.
3) Advertising on social media is the best as it gets to a wider audience.
4) Not really, I don’t really play them.
5) No.
Sam
1) Yes.
1a) The True Geordie podcast and every time it is uploaded.
2) I was watching his normal content on YouTube and then his podcast came up so I gave it ago.
3) Social media is the best place to advertise.
4) Yes, I play games all the time.
5) Yes.
5a) No.
Audience research
• Observation: There is a big chance that this person is interested in the podcast and will at
least listen, this is because he listens to a comedy podcast which is hopefully what I am
wanting to have as well an informative podcast to do with the game. They also say that
putting audio clips of the content within the podcast in ads is a good idea as that is what is a
big draw for them.
• What this says about my audience: This shows that I can promote my podcast towards
people who know about the game and have a slight interest in it and also want a comical
podcast.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I think this product will appeal to this
member of the audience as they have a slight interest in the game and also like the idea of a
comical podcast, this is perfect and exactly the audience I need to promote to.
Rob
1) Only one really.
1a) Peter Crouch is my favourite.
2) Twitter.
3) Clips of the content in my opinion is the best way to advertise things.
4) Yes, I like video games.
5) Yes.
5a) Possibly.
Audience research
• Observation: This person is perfect as an audience member to promote to as they play the
game a lot and have a high interest in it. They also say that if they hear someone else online
talk about a podcast they are more probable to go listen to and to promote the podcast on
such social media as YouTube.
• What this says about my audience: This says that I need to focus on members of the
audience who have these views as they will be my main audience, I will not have to promote
the podcast heavily to them but can focus more on the content itself.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will appeal to this audience
member massively as they are automatically interested in the game itself and are what
seems to be excited in the idea of listening to a League Of Legends podcast.
Lofty
1) Only sometimes, not often.
1a) I don’t listen to any podcast in particular but ones that just seem to be interesting to me.
2) Usually it is from YouTube videos where the creator mentions it and if it seems interesting, I’ll
go listen to it.
3) I’m not really sure, I only really look at ones which I like some of the people in them, so, I
guess by having them promote it themselves on YouTube or something.
4) Yes, I play games a lot.
5) Yes, I play League a lot too.
5a) Yeah, that sounds good.
Interviews
Interview Questions.
• To start with, I am going to interview people who are into
video games and also who listen to podcasts as this will be
my first target audience.
• 1) Do you like video games?
• 2) Do you like podcasts?
• 3) What genre of podcast do you mostly listen to?
• 4) If there was a podcast with that genre in it but also about
video games, would you listen to it?
• 5) What would you like to hear during a podcast about
video games?
• 6) What are some things you hate about podcasts?
• 7) What are some things you love about podcasts?
Interview 1
• 1) Yes.
• 2) Yes.
• 3) Ones to do with video games and comedy.
• 4) *Answered in answer above.*
• 5) Any news about what's new and up and coming in the
industry or recommendations of new games.
• 6) When they're unstructured and the podcast guests don't
have a good flow or know where to go next, basically poor
planning.
• 7) How I can set it going and be entertained by it for a solid
hour and can get invested into it like a tv show (when I
know there's going to be one each week for example)
Keean.
Interview 1
• Observation: This shows that this is they type of person who I need
to aim my podcast towards and promote towards. Also they have
mentioned what they like and dislike in a podcast of this format and
also what else they would like to hear during the podcast. This
helps me as I can now structure my podcast around these people as
they are my main audience and I need to have these people
listening to the podcast.
• What this says about my audience: This says that my audience is
what I expected if they like video games and comedy, it shows I can
make what I wanted and have an audience who would be there to
listen to it.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My product will
appeal because of all the things they enjoy are to do with my
podcast and I am planning for it to be structured as well which is
something that this person said is a problem with podcasts that
aren’t.
Interview 2
• 1) Yes.
• 2) Yes.
• 3) Sport podcasts.
• 4) No.
• 5) Conflicting opinions and disputes.
• 6) I hate when podcasts have sponsors and promote it
every 20 seconds, it gets annoying and repetitive.
• 7) Input from different communities represented by
people from different backgrounds and ways of life.
Kieran.
Interview 2
• Observation: It will be difficult to promote my product to this
person as they are into sports and not into e-sports which is difficult
to promote towards as they don’t have an interest although they
are into video games and podcasts, so there is a chance that I may
be able to lure this person into listening to the podcast with the
right promotion. This person also mentioned how they didn’t like
excessive promotions on sponsorships so I will have to make sure I
do not do that during the podcast and also how they like the idea of
people from different backgrounds speaking on the matter.
• What this says about my audience: It says that there is a specific
audience I need to cater my product towards and not just towards
people who are casually into video games.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: It will be difficult to
appeal to this audience member as they don’t have much interest
in the proposal at hand.

Research.

  • 2. Existing Product The Misfits podcast. For the Misfits podcast they use multiple camera angles, a main one where you can see all members of the podcast in one shot and then the camera angles change depending on who is talking; a separate camera is shown which is fixated on that single person as a way of focusing on that person. This is good and looks very professional and makes is more visually interesting for the audience to watch. In post-production they add some music and even sponsor ads that the podcast gets. All members of the podcast are put together and are in 1 room which makes it good as they can all interact with eachother, which can be entertaining for the audience. They use multiple box lights behind the cameras and even have LED lights spelling the name of the podcast to create a more eye- grabbing set. They don’t have any specific costumes apart from all of them wear the merch of the podcast. In this podcast they speak about multiple topics in one sitting and this can make it hard to listen to as they go through stories very fast and don’t stick to one subject. This shows that they have no script which could be seen as good as it means they say what they want to say but also it means that the podcast loses control and they just go off into saying whatever they want, losing structure and focus. They don’t use any props when they are recording the podcast either. This is fine as I won’t be doing anything like that in my project. Apart from the merch that they wear as a way to promote their podcast, they don’t push the audience to buy anything bar their sponsors, this is good as some podcasts always push their audience to buy things such as merch but the misfits podcast don’t do that, they just wear it and say you can get some yourself if you want to support them and the podcast.
  • 3. Existing Product TMG Podcast. For this podcast they use just one camera angle which is head on and you can see both hosts in this shot, this keeps it easy and simple for the audience to watch and follow. They have a studio where they record the podcast. In this podcast they have no specific costumes and don’t use props within their podcast. For the podcast they have some box lights behind the camera and also use some natural lighting from the window on the right of the screenshot. They don’t use many bright colours in their production but find all of their value in the topics they are talking about. In this podcast they have a script that they loosely follow, which is the format that I want to use in my podcast, they go onto a topic and talk about it then when they are done with the topic there is no awkward silence as they have more topics to talk about and even edit parts where I am assuming there is an awkward silence phase. Apart from this, they don’t do anything in post- production as they do sponsor ads in the live podcast and they have no background music that they add in either. They also have merch for the podcast that can be found on their website which they do plug at the beginning and end of every podcast to remind the audience that they can buy it to support the podcast. Apart from their own merch and the sponsors, they don’t promote anything else or push to get their audience to buy stuff.
  • 4. Existing Product Cold Ones. For the cold ones podcast they have their own studio that they own just to film and edit the podcast. They have multiple camera angles such as a main angle where you see all the members of the podcast and then when one member or a guest is speaking it can switch to a handheld camera done by one of the two assistants behind the cameras to focus only that person who is speaking, this can lead to great post- production edits, which makes the viewing experience funnier and better for the audience. For lighting the podcast uses maybe one or two neutral lights but mostly, as you can see, bright LED’s to cover the rest of the room, this makes the set more eye grabbing to the audience. The podcast doesn’t use music in post and do their sponsor reads live and just before their guest arrives onto the set. The hosts also wear their sponsors T-shirts and read an ad for the shop and also have the T-shirts dotted around the set on the walls, as you can see. The podcast sometimes heavily promotes the T-shirts to the audience which can drive buys but also can be off putting to the audience as it can sometimes get annoying. They don't really use a script as the podcast involves drinking, so they, at the beginning, have questions to ask their guest and then, through alcohol, this deteriorates into just general chat and questions.
  • 5. Existing Product H3H3 Podcast. For the H3H3 Podcast they have a studio that they film in, in this studio they use lighting from the normal light fixtures in the roof and don’t use any special sort of lighting to help the set/ image. For the camera angles, they use one main camera angle where the audience can see all of the members of the podcast in one shot and when one person is talking the camera can change to another camera that is looking directly and solely on that person, this is helpful to the audience and makes the audience focus on what that person is saying more. In this podcast they don’t have any specific costumes and don’t use props often. They do promote their own clothing brand which they also do sometimes wear during the podcast and aswell as this and other sponsors they do this live and not in post. They don’t add music into the podcast but do add sound clips that can be relevant to what is happening but that is not in post but put in live by their audio master who is behind the camera with a sound board. They do follow, heavily, a script based on questions that they want to ask their guests or talk about certain situations. This is good as it makes sure that they stay on track and do not get lost in the podcast but at the same time, does feel like some subjects are rushed and forced which is un-natural and can be, at times, off putting.
  • 6. Existing Product The Joe Rogan Experience: The Joe Rogan Experience (JRE) is the most listened to and financially successful podcast in the world. For the JRE, they use a set that has been designed to optimize sound quality with the walls being covered in sound proofing foam. In the podcast, a script is not used but instead whatever is on the guest's or Joe's mind is said or questioned. One camera angle is used throughout the podcast, a shot of the table, showing the whole table, in the case of if there are more than one guest one, to fit them in frame. Joe does do ad read's live and does them at the start of the podcast, end and will even plug his own merch during the podcast. This can get annoying and repetitive for audience members. There is nothing done in the fact of post- production apart from if a video clip is being shown, they will edit that in for the audience watching at home. Apart from this, the video/ audio that is in question is shown to the people in the studio via T.V. For lighting, they use the natural lights in the studio rather than more professional lighting, this has come under scrutiny as the majority of the audience dislike this look as say it is a majoy distraction for them when watching.
  • 7. Existing Product. Strong Opinion Sports: This is a podcast that is largley based around information given for the NFL. The set is very simple as it is just one room with soundproof foam around it with one soft box light behind the camera aswell as the normal lighting from the room. There is one camera shot, it is just a head on shot that is a close shot of the presentor. Post- production editing is involved but very basic, only pictures/ logos are added but does help with the audience incase they are not fully following and need help to understand what the host is talking about. The podcast heavily follows a script, which is very detailed. The podcast is broken up via these subjects in the script. There is some promotion at the start of some, not all, of the Strong Opinion Sports podcasts, these can be sponsorships or more recently, the merch of the podcast. This is only done once and is at the very beginning so it does not get in the way of the flow and does not get to irritate the audience. Heavily following the script does hinder the podcast sometimes as the host has to "stop himself" from getting off topic which can sometimes distrupt the flow of the podcsat but is usually well structured and flows very well, this would be beneficial for my podcast but I feel a more loosley based podcast would fit the style more.
  • 8. Research Analysis • What common features do the researched products have?: • They all have one main camera angle which shows all of the members of the podcast in it, this helps the audience see who is going to be participating in the podcast, in the case that guests are being had on. They also all have some sort of neutral lighting put on the set where they are filming to help the audience see better and not strain eyes. Also, the majority of the podcasts do their sponsors or ad reads at the beginning of the podcast before they get into the detail and the ones that do just plug sponsors/ merch relentlessly throughout the podcast, are usually seen as annoying and received poorly, I will not be doing this and will focus on doing my ad read, if I choose to have one, at the very beginning of the podcast to avoid it being distracting or annoying to the audience. • What aspects of the research will you include within your own work?: • I will include a made-up sponsor which I will do either live or put in post depending on how much detail I decide I want to put into it. I am leaning more towards recording my ad read outside of the podcast recording to make it less awkward and make sure I do not go off track or get distracted when doing it, to seem more professional. I will not be doing a visual podcast but an audio only podcast, meaning I will have to rely on music transitions and audio queues to determine what is happening. I will also be making a script of bullet points that I am wanting me and the partners to loosely follow as I want the podcast to flow more and seem more relaxed rather than being up tight and not being able to say what we want without fearing going too far-off track, although, this will be kept in check as that will be a waste of time and will have to be cut in post- production.
  • 10. Riot Games Riot games are the creators of the game, Leauge of Legends, what my podcast will be based on. Riot games release a load of information and updates relating to, the game and its current and future state and sometimes the community. I can partially trust Riot Games as they are the direct source but sometimes have been known to do somethings behind the scenes without detiailing it to the public when they should have. Such as updates to the game aswell as the community which can lead to contraversy. They are the overall easiest place to get information from and do research on as all of the information is easy to get to and also the detials and information is well layed out on their official website.
  • 11. Community For researching the community, it will be more difficult to do and find information as the community for League of Legends is based around the live streaming website, twitch. Luckily, there are YouTube channels that I can use/ watch that make daily content, using clips from live streams that help show what important people in the community are saying and how they act. This can be reliable as it means I do not have to watch an impossible amount of content to find something that might not even be there. It also has the chance to not be reliable as they only use clips from the live stream of varying lengths which means I could lose context for the clips. This means I will have to find a clip, go to the stream and hope the streamer kept the VOD so I can watch the stream and make sure I can see what the context was of the clip as a way to make sure I do not relay any misinformation to the audience.
  • 12. Reliable Sources Finding reliable sources for League of Legends content is hard to find as people who spout information online are usually wrong. Although, there is one person who creates and releases spread sheets of the upcoming patches to the game, even before Riot Games do and goes into extreme detail in the changes, more so than what Riot Games release when they roll out the update. This person is the lead gameplay designer for Leauge of Legends so that is where he gets his information and releases it and has not been wrong ever since uploading so I will use this account on twitter as a way to see a more reliable way to what is happening and with more detiaul that is usually being released to the public and player base.
  • 14. League of Legends Demographic According to statista.com, the main demographic for League of Legends is played by all agr groups but the majority is 25- to 34-year- olds. This is surprising as the target demographic for the game is roughly 12- 19, this is based off of the games rating of 12+ but also how they advertise their product in a more cartoonish way. This will help me and my presenters with the language that we can use as the demographic is higher than expected and will not be detrimental for us to have to watch what lenguage we use. Although, we will not just be swearing and using profanity and still make an effort to make it more suitable for younger generations as to not alienate them or make them feel uncomfortable, it just means we can be more us and not have to think as much to what we are saying and whether it is appropriate or not.
  • 15. Podcast Demographic Finding out the demographic for podcasts can be difficult as anyone can make one and for any sort of audience but they are mainly seen as a more mature genre of media which is beneficial to my project as the main demographic for Leauge is more mature than what was expected but at the same time, it is also detrimental towards my project as it has the possibility to put off the younger demographic and make them feel alienated. I can try and combat this by doing most of my adversitment in a more childish or cartoony way but not in a way that would put off the more mature demographic as they are the main target audience and who I am wanting to be my main audience for the podcast.
  • 16. Audience Summary The maindemographic from both League of Legends and podcast listeners are roughly 20-34, this is large range. This is beneficial though as with the media of a podcast, it can be aimed to a large group of people due to its simple nature. This means that I will have to do more of a simpler marketing to attract more of the younger audience but not too simple as to drive away the older demographic as they are the main target. I am doing this as to try not and alienate any sort of age group to get my prodcut to appeal to the biggest amount of people and get more listens and potential audience.
  • 18. Create a realistic product I do not want to create a vision that is unatainable for me to do. To help combat this, I will keep my ideas simple to start with and then expand on them when I am in the middle of making them, this will help me in seeing what I am able to do and how I can incorporate my skills into my work, rather than just stating what I want to do and not being able to do that thing, putting me behind in my work. I must also be able to research all of the subjects I want to discuss in my podcast, I will do this by writing down points and subjects and quickly looking into them to see how detailed I can be with my work to make sure I can provide the audience with the most accurate information.
  • 20.
