1. Research findings
I started my research into film trailers so that it can help me understand more about film trailer
production so when I create my own film trailer, I understand the codes and conventions of a film
trailer. This research was beneficial and helpful because it helped me get a clearer understanding of
trailers and broadened my understanding of film and what goes into making a successful film trailer.
During my research I looked at other genres and looked at what they had similar and how different
the trailers are when they are not subgenre and only one genre. I uploaded all my research and
work on to the Haverstock media blog to show that I have done in depth research.
My main source of research I used was secondary information (internet) because I find it more
accurate and more useful when it comes to researching film. The internet is a quick way of getting
accurate information and it gives a variety of sources to choose from. I used YouTube as one of my
sites, YouTube was very useful because the videos are good quality, they have interviews based on
the trailer I am watching, they have feedback from fans who comment on the trailer and that way I
can predict whether the film is going be successful judging on how the fans are reacting. I didn’t use
books as one of my resources because they are not up to date with the information I need when it
comes to film trailers. Primary research wasn’t used as much as secondary research because I
haven’t collected original primary data myself however part of my research did include a
questionnaire on peoples thoughts on movie trailers.
I uploaded all my work on to the Haverstock media blog and we had to put the work into categories
for example Category Unit 1 Criteria 2 &3. This is a useful way of storing my work because I would
know exactly where my work is and what exactly I am looking for.
The way that I decided what relevant research was and what was not relevant research was by
seeing what information I really needed and by cutting information that was unnecessary. For
example one site I used frequently was IMDB, when reading about films on imdb they have
background information about the stars information, information like that is irrelevant to my
research on film trailers. I didn’t use sites where the information had been flagged up as an opinion
because I wanted my research to be based on factual and accurate information.
I learnt that in most action movie these days tend to be a subgenre so that it can reach out to a
different target audience. I also learnt that in the trailer there’s a constant reminder of the genre
during the trailer. Action movie trailers tend to involve explosions, car crashes, gun violence and
constant fighting, during action movie trailers the violence builds up and the dangerous scenes
escalate into life threatening scenarios. Most of the main characters in action movie are men; men
dominate in action movies because they are seen as more masculine then women.
I learnt that with action movies there are high expectations that go with the genre the audience
expect each movie to be better than the last one , each scene more dangers the next , extremes
stunts and unimaginable car scenes . In some accepts most audiences see the trailers misleading as
they feel the movie isn’t as good as they thought it would have been due to the trailer being on
point. Most people watch movie trailers because it has been recommended by a friends or family,
but they also tend to watch the movie trailer before going to see the film.
2. The feedback that I got from questionnaire was that many people watch film trailer because they are
frequently going to the cinemas and others said they watch trailers because it has been
recommended to them. One thing I would have changed was that I should have given it to wider
range of people because I received feedback from people my age range. This means that answers
would have been based on what their friends would have said (biased information).
To conclude I think all the research and blogging I have done will help me create an effective movie
trailer. I have learnt a lot about action film conventions and will implement them in my film trailer. I
have gathered information on what people look forward to watch in trailer and I know exactly how
to make movie trailer successful. Now that I have everything I need in front of me to create a film
trailer I am adamant my film trailer is going to be a success.
