This week we continued to word remotely. Good progress was made on the summer program planning and the tardigrade microgravity habitat prototype is nearly finished. Stay healthy!
3. SUMMER PROGRAM
DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS
With our finalized courses and topics, we have created an updated flyer.
However, in order to complete the flyer, we need to iron out some more
details about the program (when, where, how much), which will be done
later.

In addition, we have done more extensive research on nonprofits (steps
to create one), insurance, and locations. We still need to decide what
kind of non-profit we will be and further look into what
paperwork/legalities are required.

4. BUSINESS CANVAS
This exercise helped us further envision what our program will look
like and what it will involve.

Over this week, we have worked on
filling out a business canvas for
our summer program. We went through
our key partners, key activities,
key resources, value proposition,
customer relationships, customer
segments, channels, cost structure,
and revenue streams.
5. PLATE SCANNER
SOFTWARE
Progress so far:
● UI Created
● Functionality for connecting to Arduino
● Basic framework for program
● Functionality for microscope pictures and video feed
● Testing scaling
What needs to be done next round:
● OpenCV algorithms for calibration, image stitching, counting, etc.
● Arduino-side code
● Packet inspection (might remove this feature because it’s not completely
necessary)

Main scanner interface with microscope picture. The only thing missing from
here which will be in the final interface is the nav box in the upper right. This
image was taken with the microscope camera in the plate scanner assembly.
New interface for controlling microscope settings. In the future there will be
more settings like how fast it moves. The resolutions in the resolution control
change depending on the microscope model. They are semi-hard-coded
because I assume we will only be using the MD200 camera.
Note that the
image becomes
unfocused in the
upper left. This is
because the
microscope is not
completely
perpendicular in
the plate
scanner. This
needs to be
fixed.
In the future I might add a script which auto-detects all
available resolution/fps settings for a camera through brute
force checking. Right now I rely on the specifications listed on
the camera’s website, which are not always accurate.
7. TARDIGRADE
MICROGRAVITY HABITAT
Progress so far:
● Acrylic piece has been cut and screwed in.
● Attached grow lights and covered top part of microgravity habitat in
aluminum foil.
What needs to be done next round:
● Glue carbon foam sheet.
● Test with petri dish.

8. HOW WE FEEL ABOUT
THIS WEEK...
Christina - 9: I think this week went pretty well. We got some work done for the
summer program. I also think that this week was a little smoother than last week
because we got more used to working/communicating remotely.
Holger - 8: Less productive than last week due to the stuff this week being
harder with more setbacks. I couldn’t make the plate scanner physically move
because we don’t have the right power supply and regulator for the motor shield.
Justin - 9.5: This week, I pivoted toward business planning, which was much
easier given that all our work in that field could be done online. Although
working on the business side of things was mostly new to me, I felt like I was
significantly more productive and had a better time overall.
Alex - 8: Didn’t really do a whole lot this week but completed the microgravity
habitat. I’m excited to test it.
Drew - 9: I think we got a good amount of work done with the business canvas and
SWOT analysis, I still wish the group was able to meet in person.
