3. This Week’s Objectives:
- Plate Scanner
- Hardware
- Add Finishing Touches to Grant Proposal
- Take Notes on Blue Origin Requirements
- Collect Wild Tardigrades
1.
4. Plate Scanner Updates
We completed rewiring it and have been testing the code to find that it
works. We are also going to be working on creating an AHK script to
autosave the arduino pictures into a folder with time stamps. Kai
decided to revise the the top plate belt because it would skip teeth
frequently. He is currently working on that. He is creating a new design
and we will have to buy/3D print new materials for it.
5. Blue Origin Notes
The previous members of MBTS received a document detailing
the requirements of the microgravity habitat. However, they say
that the document is confidential and was unable to share it with
the new team. We found a copy of the 2016 model but we still
need the newer updated document as we need to cross check it.
6. We spent several hours trying to find wild
tardigrades and analyzing the petri dishes. We
found several tardigrades in petris and will
continue to look for them. We will also separate
out the carnivorous tardigrades along with
cannibalistic tardigrades.
New Tardigrades
8. Round 1: Transition
1. Fix 3D printer ✓
a. Replace missing SD card ✓
b. Find a way to slice 3D designs ✓
2. Complete plate scanner ✖
a. Hardware: rewiring the breadboards and Arduinos ✖
b. Software: finish writing the code ✓
3. Start writing the research grant proposal ✓
9. Round 2:
1. Finish writing the research grant proposal ✓
2. Start building the Microgravity Habitat ✖ (however we began research)
3. Finish the entire plate scanner ✖ ( remake the plate scanner bcz bad design)
a. Rewiring the breadboards and Arduinos ✓
b. Make sure code works ✓
c. Attach fully assembled microscope ✖
d. Add a script to autosave the pictures from the plate scanner
with time and date stamps. ✖
4. Start using the plate scanner to find the ideal environment for
tardigrades and create a mosaic to print out and analyze. ✖
10. Round 4:
We will begin working on improving crowdfunding and the overall
complete the tasks required of us.
1. Refine the design for the microgravity habitat and begin plans
to create it and hopefully complete it by the end of this school
year.
2. Advance understanding of tardigrades and work on more
crowdfunding plans
12. 8
This week, the group didn’t all work on one specific thing. Kai worked on the
plate scanner while Daisy worked closely to understand the requirements of
the Blue Origin Payload. We all went tardigrade hunting and discovered
several types of tardigrades including but not limited to carnivorous
tardigrades. I think, while the group may be improving in terms of behavior
and dealing with each other, this was one of the slower weeks in terms of
completing stuff and making sure our agenda has been met. We will begin
ordering stuff for the next internship block over the break. We took far more
breaks than necessary and will shorten our breaks in the future..
Sean (Project Manager)
13. 7
Personally this week was kind of rough for me, so I think that bled
into my work ethic this week. I was able to lean on the group for
support a bit more as I started to get used to them/trust them
more.
There was a slight issue with the group, which slowed our work
minimally, but we were able to resolve it.
Eva (Lead for Additive & Marketing)
14. 8
This week went by ok. We found some tardigrades through the
microscope and collected multiple samples of moss and a
sample of lichen. Unfortunately, only one of the four samples had
tardigrades in them. We will continue analyzing the petri dishes
in search for tardigrades and will take care of them.

I felt like this week definitely could have gone better. This
week, I struggled the most in taking notes on the Blue
Origin Payload User's Guide. I was very frustrated that
some people were not on task or were writing very low
quality notes. In the end, I had to do their job. I also think
Sean needs to improve the way he manages the team. I
think he needs to be more responsible and do his job.
Daisy (Assistant Developer)
16. 8.5
This week was better because we were able to find lots of
tardigrades and I worked on redesigning the top belt. I had
multiple designs in mind but I have narrowed it down two. I think
our relationships have gotten better throughout this week and I
feel like I have a better relationship with all of my colleagues.
Kai (Lead Hardware Engineer)
Editor's Notes
finish weekly grant proposal, finish blue origin notes(explain what these are and why we need them) make sure you add to the slide if Dr. Casey can show us the newer document. tell him about the wild tardigrades and what we found ward science. tell him about the issues kai had w plate scanner. I'll do the reflections :)
