In orderto create a successful magazineIdecidedto create asurvey using‘SurveyMonkey’ asa primaryresearch
methodtoask a range of people aboutmusicandtheirchoice of magazine witha seriesof differentquestions.I
managedgatherinformationfrom6people usingasocial networkingsite –Facebook.Igatheredthisinformationto
worktowardsmy musicmagazine.
I sentmy surveyto6 people- 67% are female and
33% are male.I believethatthe type of music
chosenbymalesand femaleswill be biased–
femaleswill choose popanddance andmaleswill
chose rock/alternativerock/heavymetal.
I includedarange of agesto getwiderrange of
answersfroma range of target audiences(16-26and
27-37). A large proportion(90%) were from16-26 and
only10% being27-37.
Thiswill give me anideaof what targetaudience to
aimmy magazine at.Giventhe informationrecorded,
16-26 where mostprominentfromthissurvey,
therefore I’ll be takingthisintoaccountwithmy
magazine.

readNME, KERRANGand RollingStones.
Thistellsme that the more hard core

metal isfavouredoverthe other
suggestions.However,33.33% alsowent
for NME whichisa magazine thatcovers
all typesof music,indicatingthatsome
people preferanall-roundmagazine more
than a specificgenre of magazine.

Due to the fact thatsome people don’treadmusic

personansweredthattheywere “tooexpensive”
but twoothers saidthat they“can get the

I thenwentonto ask the questionof howmany
theyreadin a month.From the results100% of
the people askedread0-2 magazinesina
month,suggestingthatmagazinesare still a
popularsource of gatheringinformationrather
than usingweb2.0.
For thisquestion40% answeredartists,20%
answeredfreebies,20% answeredinterviewsand
another20% answeredevents.Thishasprovided
me withextremelyhelpfulinformationastowhat
to include inmymagazine,suchaspicking
carefullywhattype of artistto include andmaking
sure I add coverlinesforeventsandinterviews,
makingthemthe top priorityforthe magazine.
For example,forthe artistIwouldmake his/her
or the band’s name the maincoverline beingin
the middle of the frontcover.For the interviews
and eventIwouldmake sure that they are placed

I feltasthoughthis wasan importantquestionto
ask as itcouldinfluence the designandfocusof my

saidthat photographywasthe mainfeature that
attracts themto a magazine.However,16.67%
chose colour.I am goingto take the answers on
board byfocusingona powerful imagethatwill
catch an audience’sattention, butalsomakingsure
to follow acolourtheme inorderfor itto look
professional. However,usingtoomuchcolourcan
be overwhelmingandcouldempowerthe
photographyand alsothe main focusof the
magazine e.g.the artist.

that the photographyandcolourscheme of a magazine are importantasit iswhat attracts an audience,andalsoto
focuson a populargenre as there isa mainstreamaudience,orfocuson a magazine thatcoversall genres.Forthe
