Quantitative Data
Apisan
Aim of Survey
• The aim of the survey was to find out about what sort of
features people like to see in included in music magazines and
to see what people expect from music magazines. The sole
intention of this survey was to help me design a more
accomplished music magazine through the help of the public.
It was made so that I would know what sort of features to
include in my own music magazine.
Age
• After looking at this data,
I know that the people
that took part in my
survey were mainly aged
under 18. This is ideal as
my magazine is aimed at
a similar age group.
Gender
After looking at this data I
can see that most of the
survey participants would
like to see both female and
male artists on the front
cover of the magazine. This
would help dissuade bias
towards a certain gender
Colour
This shows me that most
of the participants of
the survey wanted to
see the magazine to be
black. This is
appropriate as black is a
common colour and it is
easy to differentiate
Content of front page
This data shows me that most
of the survey participants
would like to see the music
artists on the front cover,
although quite a few also
wanted the front page to
consist of pictures as well,
indicating most of the people
Reason for choosing what they did for
the contents of front page question
• Most of the survey participants gave good reasons for choosing
whatever they did choose. One person said: “More variety,
more aesthetically appealing.” Another person said: “It will
hook in a younger audience.” Lastly, this quote as crucial in
backing up why artists should be on the front cover of the
magazine: “Because when you see famous artists and some of
your favourites you are likely to be attracted to the
magazine.”
Preferred form of listening to music
Using this data I can identify
that most of the people that
took part in this survey access
music by streaming online or by
downloading it. This indicates
that my music magazine should
contain a website reference to
a place where people can
download music legally. Also I
Preferred social media platform
Using this data I can see that
most of the people that took
part in this survey use Twitter
and Facebook the most. This
tells me that my magazine
should have a link to its Twitter
and Facebook page in order to
engage with the buyers of the
magazine a bit more.
Most appealing magazine title and
reason
After looking at this data I can see that most
people that took part in the survey liked the
title ‘Vibe’ the most out of the options
given. One person said: “The other titles are
too bland and unrelated to style of
magazines. Also vibe sounds good and can
easily be pronounced remembered by
people.” Another person said Vibe sounded
“cool” and “trendy”. This tells me that I
Favourite artist
After looking at the results I
can see that people liked Chris
Brown, Rihanna and the
Weeknd the most out of the
options available. Also people
mentioned artists such as
Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber
in the ‘other’ section. This tells
me that what type of artists
Favourite animal
Using this data I can see that
people liked fish dogs the
most. This helps me to narrow
down the characteristics of the
participants. Also cats were
also reasonably close showing
that most of my participants
like the well known animals
that we can have as pets.
Research outcomes
• After this research, I have found out many valuable things. I
now know what colour my magazine should be (black), white
sort of features my magazine should include, what artists I
should mention in the magazine, how my target audience
access music, what social media platforms are most used,
what gender to include in the front page (both) and what type
of title I should have. All of this information will help me to
develop a magazine that satisfies the needs of my target
Audience Profile
My audience (16-19 year
olds) like to listen to
artists such as Chris
Brown and The Weeknd
the most, indicating they
like their type of hip hop
music. This also means
that I should include and
refer to these artists in
my magazine in order to
engage with my target
My audience (16-19
year olds) like to
access music via
download or by
streaming online. This
shows that I should
include a link to
websites that offer
these features.
My audience (16-19 year olds) like
to use social media platforms such
as Twitter and Facebook the most.
His shows that I should make
reference to these particular
social media platforms as a way
for the magazine buyers to
interact with the music magazine
company.
This title was the most preferred
choice out of the options given. I
would need to have a title similar to
this in order to please my target
Secondary data analysis (internet
consumption)
Using this data from the ‘Office for
National Statistics’ I can see that the
use of internet daily or almost every
day has increased dramatically from
2006 (16.2 million adults) to 2015
(39.3 million adults). This shows that
more and more people are using the
internet daily in their lives as they
have more accessibility.
Secondary data analysis (internet
consumption)
Using this data from the ‘Office
for National Statistics’ I can see
that the age group 16-24 uses the
internet the most on a day to day
basis. This shows that people part
of this age group are the most
popular users of the internet.
Secondary data analysis (internet
activities)
Using this data from the ‘Office
for National Statistics’ I can see
that the most popular internet
activity is sending/receiving e-
mails (76% in 2015). Reading news
and magazines is the third most
popular (62% in 2015) and using
social networking is the fourth
most popular (61% in 2015).
Secondary data analysis (internet
activities)
Using this data from the ‘Office
for National Statistics’ I can see
that the age group 25-34 and the
age group 35-44 use the internet
the most for various activities.
This is possibly due to the fact
they would be working and so
would do more important things
than 16-24 year olds.
Secondary data analysis (internet
access)
Using this data from the ‘Office
for National Statistics’ I can see
that the access to the internet
has gradually risen from a low 9%
in 1998 to a very high 8% in 2015.
This shows the growing
importance of technology over
the years and how easy it has
become today to access the
