Short Overview of BANGLADESH
6. Cox's Bazar is the longest sea beach in the world, and a popular Bangladeshi
tourist spot
7. Air quality in Bangladesh-state of knowledge
In recent years, Bangladesh has ranked among top air polluted countries around the
globe. Air quality in Bangladesh is measured on daily basis using national standards of
five pollutants— NO2, CO, Ozone (O3), SO2, and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10)
8. Main Sources of Air Pollution in Bangladesh
Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world is prone to
pollution where smoke generated from brick kilns, motor, and traffic run on fuel with
higher level of sulfur and dust produced from constructions are causing air pollution.
Mass industrialization, urbanization, and infrastructure construction cause massive air
pollution to skyrocket in winter season.
Agricultural field burning, Industrial emissions, vehicle emissions, and waste burning are
other major causes of air pollution.
Around 72% of national household use solid fuel, which contribute to air pollution,
according to State of Global Air 2019.

15. What is Bangladesh Doing To Combat Air Pollution?
Road Side Vehicle Testing Program: The project will take initiated a
simple Enforcement program. Vehicles will be tested at selected roadside checkpoints using
Caravan station where it will be seen whether vehicles are followed by emission standards or
not. Particularly the high polluters, there should be advance publicity at to what and why this
program is being carried out.
Vehicular Emission Standards: Revision of Vehicular Emission Standards is an on
going process. The current vehicle emission standards will be reviewed and for possible
revision of the standards for new and in-use vehicles.
Enforcement Mechanism: Vehicle emission regulations enforcement program is one
of the primary components of vehicle emission control strategy. Therefore, one of the
initiatives is to develop and strengthen DoE’s enforcement programs related to vehicular
emission control.
17. Brick Kilns in Bangladesh are a Major Source of Black Carbon and other Air Pollutants. The
National Action Plan Authority will Replace 100% of Traditional Brick Kilns With Improved
Brick Kilns By 2025. In this regard, project will implement several demonstration program of
energy efficiency brick technology including:
Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln (VSBK) will be demonstrated in seven divisions.
Zig-Zag will be demonstrated in seven divisions
Hybrid-Hofman Kiln (HHK) will be demonstrated in seven divisions.
Tunnel Kiln will also be demonstrated
