METAL Organic FRAMEWORKS
DEFINITION
 MOFs are compounds consisting of metal ions or
clusters coordinated to organic ligands to form
one two or three dimensional structures they are
subclass of coordination polymers .
 These hybrid structures can be porous or non
porous and offer manifold functionalities.
SYNTHESIS OF MOFs
APPLICATIONS OF MOFs
 Gas storage (hydrogen , methane).
 Carbon Dioxide capture separation of CO2 from
flue gas.
 MOFs have adsorption properties and can
increase the performance of heat exchanging
systems i.e. in industrial cooling systems.
APPLICATIONS OF MOFs
 Selective gas adsorption .
 Useful gas separation
 Catalysis due to active metal sites.
 Used in the preparation of enantio pure
compound.
Inorganic Anion Sensing
 The cyanide ion (CN−) is another important
contaminant in water, as it is one of the most toxic
and lethal pollutants presently occurring in nature.
 The Ghosh group reported on a selective and
sensitive fluorescent senor for the aqueous-
phase detection of CN− using an MOF-based
system.
 In this study, a post-synthetic modification of ZIF-
90 with the specific recognition sites for CN− was
applied.
Heavy Metal Ion Sensing
 Heavy metal ions are one of the
nonbiodegradable pollutants in the water
environment.
 Therefore, many MOF-based sensors have been
reported for heavy metal ions detection in water.
 Reported on a highly sensitive and selective
fluorescent MOF-based probe for copper ion
(Cu2+) detection.
 Excellent selectivity for sensing Cu2+ ions was
encapsulated into a zeolitic imidazolate
Ion Sensing
 Lead ion (Pb2+) is one of the most toxic and
commonly found heavy metal ions in aquatic
ecosystems. The monitoring of Pb2+, especially
trace amounts of Pb2+ in the water environment,
is important to the public health.
 The He group designed a detection strategy to
detect Pb2+ using Pd–Pt alloy-modified Fe-MOFs
(Fe-MOFs/PdPt NPs) with hairpin DNA
immobilized on the surface as a signal tag . As
shown in Fig. a streptavidin-modified reduced
graphene oxide-tetraethylene pentamine-gold
nanoparticle (rGO-TEPA-Au) composite serves as
the sensor platform for DNAzyme immobilization.
