( ) as a career woman. ( ) as a housewife and mother
( ) as a career woman and housewife at the same time. ( ) as a housewife only.
Women role in the past.
It isan undeniable factthata woman'splace wasonce inthe home.Inthe past, womenwere merelyrequiredto
fulfil the role of motherandhousewife.Today,thissituationhaschangedtremendously.If awomanpossessesthe
attributesandqualitiesof her male counterpart, she will definitelybe givenequalopportunitiesinthe careerworld
withoutmuchbias. Therefore, womenbegantomake the scene and, eventually, there wasasteadyflowof women
leavingtheirhomes.A certainvacuumoremptinesswasthuscreatedinthe households.Nomore couldthe husbands
turn to theirwivesafterahard day'swork.Societymarveledatthe abilityof women, butitalsosufferedatthe
realizationof the importantrole thatwomenplayintheirhomes.
Shouldwomenbe allowedtoworkaftermarriage then?The answerisundoubtedlypositive althoughthisissue
ishighlydebatable intermsof the nature of the professionsinvolved. If awomanpursueshercareerbut isat the same
time able tocare for herhome and children, one simplycannotfindanyreasonwhyshe shouldnotbe allowedtodoso.
A woman'sinfluence isgreatlyneededinthe home,onthe children.Whata childneedsmostishismother's
care because howthe childismoldeddependsgreatlyonher.Itisa real pitythatwomenwholeave theirhomessolely
insearch of a careerseldomgive athoughtto this.The children,beinghelplessanddependentcreatures,mayhave
nobodyto turnto at home, exceptservantsorrelatives.Withthe motherbackonlyafterahard day's toil, the children
surelydonot getmuch attention.
Whethera womanshouldcontinue toworkaftermarriage woulddependonthe nature of her profession.Itisa waste of
resourcesif women,afterseekinghighereducation,immediatelyabandontheircareersaftermatrimony.A woman's
effortcan alsocontribute tothe well-beinganddevelopmentof society.Inthe Malaysiancontext,ateacherisonly
requiredtoworka five-dayweekwithtermholidayseverynow andthen. Moreover, she isinschool foronlyhalf of the
day. The otherhalf of the daycan be devotedtoherhome.A teacher, besideseducatingthe society, canfulfil the roleof
bothmotherand housewife. There are manyothercareerslike those of nurses, clerksandtypistswhere womencan
fulfil the doublerole.
Nevertheless, there maybe professionswhichwouldnotbe advisable forwomentoindulge inaftermarriage.A
publicrelationsofficerspendsalmostthree-quartersof hertime inhercareer.She hasheavytasksto shoulderwhich
mightrequire hertoentertainotherstill oddhoursatnight.Womenwhoventure intothe businessworldshouldthink
twice before plungingintoit.Itwouldbe beyondtheirmeanstofulfil twodemandingrolesatthe same time.
As itis,a woman'smostimportantresponsibilitystill liesinherhome.Withoutheraroundinthe house,one just
cannot bearto thinkof the consequences.Unlessanduntil she can fulfil the basicrole of ahousewife andmother, she
shouldnotmake a career hersole responsibility.
2. A career woman is _________________________________________.
